"I know Naga." Bolin patted the polarbear dog's shoulder blade sympathetically as she continued to run, "It's hard carrying four people. Just a little ways more." he reassured. They'd seen more than one air craft around this area, so the base had to be close by. But the closer they got, the more that they saw, and the more directions they saw them go in, so who knew if those things were going to or from their airfield?
"Stop," the general ordered, "we'll go from here on foot." Their mode of transportation seemed to be really happy to have the burden off her back, "Everyone spread out. Search two hundred yards in every direction.
"Or we could go simpler." Bolin rubbed his chin, "Hey Naga. Could you do me a favor? Dig through the snow. Come on, dig girl." Naga made a sound that could be considered a groan, but she dug through the snow until she reached solid earth, "Good girl, Naga."
"Right. Seismic sense." How could Iroh forget?
"Well, I'm seeing a storage shed and a lot of heavy metal things, so I'm betting this is it."
"How far?"
"Not too far, in that direction." He pointed to the east. When they came to the end of the tree line they looked down and saw the elesive air crafts...and mecha tanks, "I hate mecha tanks." Bolin groaned. What was the point of learning how to bend metal when they started making weapons out of the only known metal that even his grandmother couldn't budge?
"Looks like you found our secret airfield." Iroh congratulated him as they looked down at their target. "Bolin, once we get down there, I need you to tear up those runways, we can't let those things take off.
"Yes, Sir, General." Bolin threw up a salute for good measure. His teammates rolled their eyes, but said nothing as they moved out. Naga whined behind them, making him turn around, "Alright, you guys wait here until we get back." the animals took a step closer, testing to see if he'd cave in and let them come along, "Hey, no arguments. You stay. Stay." They both whimpered, but they laid down.
"I don't get it." He heard Mako say when he caught up to them, "This place isn't protected very well."
"Yeah, why would there be fence posts but no fence?" Asami pondered aloud. Bolin was just about to give his best guess...that they hadn't had the time to put the fence in yet...when he felt a surge of electricity go through his body.
Amon hadn't done much redecorating to the arena, but he still managed to put his mark on it. With huge, blood red banners with the equalist's symbol on the building's side, and the mecha tanks standing guard...it was hard to believe that this was the same arena were people used to go watch people bend. As expected, the three uniformed people managed to causally walk by the suits of armor and into the building.
"We'll split up." Lin told her team once they found a secluded place to speak, "I'll take the lower levels." If anybody was going to be caught in an easy-to-block off basement, it was going to be her. What was Among going to do, take her bending again? Maybe throw her in a cell? After being thrown in jail twice and being forced to hide underground she was getting used to be trapped inside a cage.
"I'll check the higher levels." Tenzin volunteered.
"I'll go to the rally and keep an eye on Amon." Korra said. One the one hand, it was a good idea. If neither Lin or Tenzin found the kids, Korra might be able to step in and get them out of there. On the other hand, this was Korra, and neither Lin or Tenzin trusted her not to go to the rally and cause trouble.
"Please be careful, Korra." Her teacher relented.
"That means don't draw any attention to yourself." Lin clarified with a glare that couldn't be seen, but was present none the less. The teenager huffed like a scolded child and headed off towards the stadium where Amon would surly be in just a little while. Tenzin, worried about his children and unable to tolerate anymore procrastination, left without another word. And Lin headed down the nearby staircase.
"What do you need?" A pair equalist guards came up to her as she entered the equipment storeroom,
"I'm just doing a sweep." She said in a semi-formal tone, making sure that they knew she meant business, but putting in a somewhat bored undertone.
"The Lieutenant send you?" The second on sneered, "Tell him, we got this."
"No one's gonna come in this way anyway." The first added.
"But it's the perfect place to stash an explosive." She growled. "Now either go tell the lieutenant to stop being such a tightass, or let me do my job so we can all get on with our lives."
"Okay, okay." The first relented. As much as he may want to find the lieutenant and do that very thing, he knew it wasn't the best of ideas, "Search the place. What's it gonna hurt?"
"But it's a waist of your time." The second added with the same boredom that she used.
"Tell me about it." But Lin would never forgive herself if she were wrong, and the airbender kids were in Amon's clutches. So she did a quick search, making sure to check under the tables to keep her from being detected.
…
Tenzin's second stop was the gym and it, like the main office, was empty save for the equipment. He sighed before turning to leave and coming face-to-face with a 'fellow' equalist.
"What are you doing in here?" the woman asked sharply. The 'just transferred' excuse wouldn't work well in this instance, so Tenzin went for another, more over-used, one.
"I am afraid I lost my way." He replied politely.
"Where were you headed?" She asked a bit more softly. Tenzin saw an opportunity here. If he played the tiles right, this woman could lead him to his family.
"I was sent to guard the airbenders." Was his answer.
"Hmm, this way." With a gesture that meant for him to follow, the woman left. He trailed behind her, keeping an eye out for every exit along the way. They walked to the lower levels, to the maintenance workshop. If he were in a calm state of mind and/or had been trained to be in this type of situation, he may have noticed that in this massive room filled with lockers, tools and other equipment, there were also the chains and padlocks that were commonly used to prevent theft. And he would've thought that this would be the perfect place to ambush an airbender. But by the time he realized this, it was too late. He was chi-blocked less than a second later. They pulled off his hood to reveal his arrow, and began to bind his arms and gag his mouth.
"He wouldn't come alone." A man, who was out of Tenzin's sight, said, "Search for the others!"
…...
Amon was retelling the story of the firebender that took his entire family. Again. He seemed to tell that story every time he made a public appearance and Korra couldn't stand it any longer. She'd got into the stadium without mumbling a word, she'd stood still and as straight as any henchman for the better part of an hour, but she couldn't just sit idly by and let Amon lie to all these people. She sucked in a breath so her words would bellow out of her mouth,
"What is your name?" She heard a person ask behind her. All confidence left her in a millisecond. Turning around with an attempt to look innocent, she asked the famous question,
"Who me?" 'Stupid, Korra. Really stupid'. It was obvious the man's defenses went up immediately.
"Yes, you."
"My name is- Aga." The pause was barely existent, but 'barely' was good enough.
"Take off your mask."
"But I'm an equalist." She defended herself, however poorly, "And and equalist never takes off her mask." And that laid all the rest of the equalist's doubts to rest. He took a stance and shouted,
"On the referee platform!" Reinforcements came rushing in, weapons at the ready, and bringing the side glances from the entire audience with them. Korra ignited fire in her hands and got ready to fight her way out.
"Stand down." Amon called to his men from the platform. They gave her a little space, but didn't release their hold on their weapons, "I knew you would come here today, Avatar Korra."
"Yes." With no more use hiding who she was, Korra took off the mask, "It's me." The crowd gasped and started to panic.
…...
Lin heard a collective gasp from above her as she climbed the steps to the high levels. At a rally, one would expect to hear mindless cheering. So what was with the negative emotions? Ten-to-one odds said that the avatar couldn't follow one simple instruction and got herself into trouble. So now she was left with a decision, keep looking for the kids, or go make sure that the dumb teenager didn't get herself killed. It was a difficult call, but she'd already completed her check on the low levels with no sign of the children. Odds were that they weren't even in the building and if they were, they might be in front of Amon...with or without Korra. It turned out to not be much of a choice at all.
…...
"Everyone calm down." The equalist leader said as if he didn't have a care in the world, "We have nothing to fear from the avatar. She has just come here in an attempt to capture me, but as you can clearly see, my people were ready for her."
"I came here to save the airbending kids that you kidnapped, Amon! Or should I call you 'Noatak'?" She challenged proudly.
"'Noatak' was the name my water tribe mother bestowed on me the day I was born. I chose a new name to accompany my new life, you may call me by that one." He said as if she'd simply called him by the wrong name," As for the kidnapping which I have supposedly committed, I can assure you that there are no airbender children here, as the rest of your team has already discovered.
"This really was all a trap." And they'd walked right into it...knowing that they were walking right into it!
"That is correct." He agreed with monotone pride, "It is only a matter of time before your friends are discovered." Now would be a great time for the avatar to leave, so she balled up her fist and slowly took a step towards the people blocking her path, "I wouldn't leave yet, Avatar, you'll miss the main event."
"What?..." The platform behind Amon raised to reveal Tenzin chained to a post. He struggled against them, but was unable to find any weak points in the metal.
"I said I have no airbender children here. But perhaps you would settle for an Airbending Master?"
"No."
