A soft sigh echoed from the detectives lips, alerting his partner to his distress. "You alright Danny?"
Danny looked up to meet Jackie's concerned gaze, "Yeah, it's just complicated."
Jackie raised her eyebrow, "Come on, you need to tell me what going on. You haven't stopped sighing since you got in today."
Danny's shoulders slumped in defeat as he thought about the night before, about Jamie's words. "I found my little brother."
In any other situation, the pure confusion on his partner's face would have been laughable, "Since when was Joe missing?"
Danny shook his head, "Not Joe, Jamie."
It was Jackie's turn to sigh, "Danny, you don't have a brother named Jamie."
Danny laughed, short and harsh, "I do actually. We thought he was gone. He was kidnapped as a kid. We never talked about him, to anyone. It was always to painful."
Jackie looked shocked, "Wow, but you said you found him, so why the long face."
Danny shook his head, "I don't know, it's like... well we kinda suspect the people who he calls his adoptive parents weren't the best kinda parents if you catch my drift." At Jackie's nod of understanding, Danny continued, "Well, we tried to get him to talk about it and what he said kinda posed more questions then it answered."
Jackie leaned back in her chair, "What did he say?"
Danny breathed deeply before answering, "That his father was a bad person, that he did things... and I have a feeling the kid meant two things. The way he said it, well, it sounds like the man was a criminal and severely abusive. I don't know what to do."
Jackie placed her hand on the edge of her desk, "Well, you've handled abuse cases before, treat it the same."
Danny frantically shook his head, "I can't. This is my baby brother. How can I hear what those people did to him and know I couldn't save him. That I failed him by leaving him there, by not finding him sooner."
Jackie took a moment to walk around the desks to her partner, "What would you say to the family of any kidnap victim? IT wasn't your fault, you did all you could."
Danny sighed loudly this time, "That's just it, I didn't. I'm a cop Jackie. I could have done any number of things over the years to try and find him, but I didn't. Heck, I only found him because he became a cop."
A Hand on his shoulder brought him out of his rant, "Look, I may not know the kid, but he's a Reagan. I doubt he holds it against you, if anything he's probably more afraid of scaring you all away with the details of his past. It sounds like he's been through a lot and what he needs right now is for you to be his brother. For you to let him know that you missed him and love him no matter what. Once he feels safe, then he will open up."
Danny hung his head, "Yeah, I know you are right. It's just hard."
Jackie smiled, "Yeah, well, it will give you something to do other than sticking perps heads in toilets. Now, you said he's a cop... what precinct is he out of, and when can I meet the newest Reagan?"
Danny returned the smile, "He just graduated the academy, got placed in the 12th, Tony Renzulli is his TO actually."
Jackie's eyes widened, "You're kidding me right? Both you and Joe started in the 12th, and if I remember correctly, Joe had the same TO."
Danny shrugged, "What can you do, must be a Reagan thing."
"Yeah, yeah. When can I meet the kid. I need to make sure you don't corrupt him with your macho he-man cop attitude." Jackie smirked as she talked, glad to see a smile back on her partner's face as he exclaimed in mock indignance.
