It was a blistering hot summer day in Magnolia and Lucy Heartfilia was sitting at the water's edge, fishing with Natsu. Happy had been there but he wanted to go convince Carla to come out with him so he left an half hour ago. Since It was scorching out that day, Lucy wore a simple white tank with short shorts and sandals. She didn't care that much today about looking her best. It was just too damn hot. She even dipped her feet into the water to attempt to fight the heat a little.
"Natsu, have you caught me any fish yet?" Happy asked as he flew over his friend's head, returning alone.
"Not yet, I think Lucy's feet is scary them away." Natsu replied while eying the water.
Happy laughed and agreed with Natsu.
"It's not because of my feet!" Lucy spat at him. But she took her feet out of the water anyway, taking what they said to heart. She didn't know anything about fishing and for all she did, her feet could possibly keep the water creatures away.
"Hey Luce, get me another worm, will ya?" Natsu asked while looking at her with his signature grin.
Now there was very little she could say no to when he used that smile on her but touching slimy, gross worms was way out of the question. She could just feel her skin crawl with just the thought of touching one of the bugs.
"N-no way!" She stuttered while backing away from the bait box.
"Why not Lucy?" Happy taunted and picked up a worm himself. Using his wings, he flew over to Lucy and offered her the insect.
The blonde mage squealed and crawled backwards as fast as she could but the damned feline continued to fly closer. Lucy was beginning to believe Happy thought of this like a game. She stood up and dashed behind a tree, hoping the flying cat would stay on the other side of the tree.
"Natsu, tell him to stop!" Lucy cried. The only thing she received was a roar of laughter from the boy. "This isn't funny!"
"Sorry, Luce. Happy, be nice." Natsu said, his voice still filled with humor.
Lucy heard the cat fly away from the tree and sit in the grass beside Natsu. She came out from behind the tree slowly, first making sure there was no icky worm near her. After confirming it was safe, she approached her original seat on the other side of Natsu.
But before she could sit down, she felt a drop of water drip down her nose. She touched the water droplet then looked towards the sky. The sky was no longer the crystal blue it had been ten minutes earlier. Instead it was covered in fluffy gray clouds waiting to pour its contents on the ground.
"Uh, Natsu, I think we should go inside now." Lucy suggested without looking away from the clouds.
"Why?" Natsu asked, confused. Why would she suggesting going inside while fishing?
Before Lucy could answer her teammate, the clouds opened up and rain dropped on them. As soon as the water down poured, Happy yelped and flew home leaving the two young adults alone. Lucy heard sizzling noises beside her and figured the water was evaporating on Natsu's skin. The laughter that bubbles up her throat burst out before she understood it. But she wouldn't deny that the boy was hot enough to accomplish such a thing. And that made it so much more funnier.
"What's so funny?" Natsu asked.
"The water is evaporating off of your skin!" Lucy giggled.
Natsu chuckled with Lucy though he didn't understand why it was so funny.
"Let's just get indoors." Lucy said.
She started to walk to the trees toward town so she could get dry again but was cut short when Natsu grabbed her arm. Lucy turned to stare out him, wondering what he was doing.
"Why go inside when it's fun to stay outside and splash in puddles?" Natsu grinned.
Lucy couldn't help it. That grin told her it would be great and to trust him. How could this grin fool her now? She couldn't think of anything bad about running in the rain with Natsu.
"Sure!" She smiled back and the two took off.
They ran through the trees and jumping into any puddle that had accumulated in their path. Lucy felt like a child again and let her giggles fill the air. The rain caused their hair and clothes to cling to their skin. This was the best part of Natsu. He made her forget her age and problems, and showed her how to have fun in any moment. Together they reached the end of the forest and charged down the hill towards town. But the grass on the incline was slick with water and Lucy's sandals couldn't get a grip causing her to trip and roll down the hill. Her body tripped Natsu who was ahead of her and he slid down the hill.
At the bottom, Natsu laid beside Lucy who was covered head to toe in grass and mud. Her shirt was forever ruined with the mixture of stains. Natsu was lucky enough not the roll so only his pants were coated in mud.
"Oh my gosh! I'm sorry!" Lucy blushed, embarrassed that she tripped him.
Natsu leaned over the blonde beside him and picked a piece of grass out of her hair. "It was fun! Let's do it again!" His eyes met the chocolate brown ones beneath him and he saw the pure happiness of the moment glaze them over.
"O-okay." Lucy whispered, feeling a little uneasy with how close she and Natsu was. Being this close made her think of how she truly felt for him. But she couldn't let him know because she just knew he didn't feel the same. She looked away from him and sat up to walk back up the hill. "Come on!"
Natsu stood beside her. Rather then letting Lucy walk up the hill herself, Natsu scooped her up in his arms and ran to the top.
"Natsu! Put me down!" Lucy squealed while laughing.
"NO!" Natsu whooped and continued running, fighting against the cold droplets of rain. However, at the top he put her down on her own to feet but kept his arm around her waist. "Ready?"
"Yeah." Lucy answered though she wasn't paying much attention to him. She was distracted from the warmth of having his arm around her waist. The touch was electric and she hoped he couldn't hear her heartbeat like she could.
Natsu fell forward, dragging Lucy down on him. When they fell towards the ground, he placed his other hand on the back of her head to effectively tuck her body into his. They tumbled down the steep hill together and Lucy shrieked in delight. It was an odd thing to roll down the hill in Natsu's arms but she couldn't think of anything else she rather do. It was just great. For a second, Lucy's back was on the slippery ground and then the next it was pelted with heavy water. She wondered if Natsu liked the mixture of touches as much as she did.
Lucy realized they reached the bottom sooner than she wanted too. She didn't want this feeling to end. The feeling of her hand flat against Natsu's chest where she could feel his racing heart. The feeling on her face tucked into his shoulder where his heat warmed her face instead of her blush. The feeling of his hot breath tickling her neck and ears. The pressure of his body firmly pressed on top of hers and the sensation of their legs being tangled together from the fall. She was currently clinging to him like the rain was. It felt as if the rain was trying to glue them into this position.
He was her Heaven on Earth even if he didn't ever share the feeling.
She looked up at his face and saw he was staring at her. "What?"
"You have a piece of grass right here." Natsu said as he brought a finger to her bottom lip.
His finger lingered there for a few unnecessary seconds and it fogged her mind. But when they pulled away, she couldn't make out the green blade.
Did she actually have grass there or did her make that up?
Why would he make it up if that was the case?
None of it made sense to her. Not until after the next minute.
Natsu had leaned his head down and took her plump lips with his. The kiss was, in Lucy's mind, perfect and everything she ever imagined. Gentle and sweet yet unsure of if it was a good idea. Lucy moved with confidence and placed both hands around his neck and into his damp hair to deepen the touch of their lips. Natsu's hands stayed on her hips but his fingers danced in circles on the delicate skin that was exposed during the tumbling. Even the rain celebrated with them as it fell on every inch of the couple with an unusual giddiness. Or maybe that's Lucy's feelings washing into the rain.
After the kiss broke apart, Lucy couldn't help but to smile. That smile that had long ago captured Natsu's heart. She was a bit breathless but that was from the excitement that Natsu had kissed her. He kissed her! She could even still feel his fingers trailing over her skin.
"What was that for?" Lucy asked when she suddenly had to know why he did that. Was it because it just felt right at the moment or was it because he felt the same about her that she felt about him?
"I, uh, wanted to do.. that for about a year now and decided what the hell." Natsu said, his cheeks coloring past the mud. " Um, I really like you, Luce. Just being with you is.. different than anyone else."
The words echoed in her mind. Everything around her paused, even the rain. Natsu had just told her he Like liked her.
This had to be a dream. She had to be laying in her bed and destined to wake up any minute.
But it all felt to vivid to be a dream.
"Natsu?" Lucy whispered.
"Yeah?"
"Is this a dream?"
"No, it's real princess."
See? Doesn't that confirm that this is real?
No. a dream wants you to be happy and will even fool you into thinking that for a momentarily relief.
"Prove it." Lucy whispered.
Natsu lightly pinched her hip and kissed her check.
This is real!
Lucy tightened her grip around Natsu's neck and smiled. The rain began to fall again.
"I love you, Natsu." She whispered, figuring that now he deserved to know.
"I love you too." He breathed against her neck.
…
Later when it had stopped raining, the two walked to the guild hand in hand. They knew what they were getting into but Lucy could hide this from her friends. The doors opened with ease and Lucy walked in first, still refusing to let go of Natsu's hand.
"Lucy, why are you so dir..?" Mira started to ask but trailed off when she saw Lucy's hand conjoined with someone else's. Then she noticed Natsu. Then she squealed. "Is this what I think it is?!"
"Yes." Lucy muttered suddenly feeling all eyes on her. She had forgot that they had rolled down a hill together and got covered in mud.
She had done to unbelievable things when walking into the guild today. One, arriving filthy and two holding hands with Natsu.
Mira moved from behind the bar and gathered the couple into a hug. All around them, she heard things like 'About time' and 'Finally!'
And from that day out, Rainy days were her favorite.
