Last Time...
Almost immediately after his comment the room seemed to shake briefly, knocking books down and clattering chairs. Before anyone could say anything else, Monk was heard shouting "Mai" as the girl once again slumped to the floor.
When Mai was finally able to pry her eyes open, she found herself in her dream-space. Gene was standing over her with a small smile.
"Hello again, Mai." He said. Mai groaned and accepted the hand he offered her, rising to her feet.
"Hey, Gene." She looked around and saw that the scenery changed to somewhere in the zoo. It looked to be near a management building of some sort, but the signs were blurry and Mai couldn't tell. She saw two people talking angrily at each other. One was the red haired woman from her first dream, and there was also the younger man from her last dream. The woman was flailing her arms as she shouted at the man.
Mai sent Gene a nervous look. He sent her a cheeky grin. "Go ahead, Mai. They can't see you." She nodded and slowly made her way closer so she could hear what was being said.
"You have no right!" The woman screamed at the man. He scowled at her in return, clenching his fists.
"No right? You're the one cheating on your husband! How can you expect me to just keep something like that to myself?" He said through gritted teeth. He was struggling to regain his composure.
"What happens in my marriage is none of your concern, Kei!" The woman fixed him with a vicious glare, running a hand through her disheveled hair. The man snorted and shook his head.
"It doesn't matter Yoshiko." He looked up at her with a menacing stare. "Either you tell him, or I will." With that, he turned and walked away from the now fuming woman. She threw her arms in the air and let out a frustrated scream.
The scene flashed and she saw the woman, Yoshiko scolding one of the workers for something. Her tone and posture gave her an air of superiority. Familiarity poked in Mai's mind at the behavior. She cocked her head as she took in the now rapidly changing scene. More instances of the woman's behavior flashed, finally painting a picture that brought recognition to Mai.
"Ayako!" Gene lifted a curious brow at her sudden statement. Mai blushed in embarrassment. "She reminds me of Ayako. I wonder if that's why Ayako is getting tormented so badly." She brought a hand to her chin thoughtfully. "But why would it start just now, and not when we got here?" She started getting a headache from trying to solve the mystery when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She started, looking up at the amused eyes of Gene.
"Think on it later, Sherlock. For now, you need to wake up. Your friends are getting worried." Gene sent her a last smile before Mai started to feel the familiar tug of consciousness.
When Mai woke up, she found herself lying in a chair, propped up somewhat uncomfortably. John was the first to see that she was awake.
"Mai! Are you alright?" His concerned voice chimed as he rushed up to her, resting a hand gently on her shoulder. This brought her to the attention of the rest of the group, causing everyone but Naru and Lin to rush over.
After quieting the chorus of 'Mai's' and 'Are you alright?'s, Mai finally told them about her dream.
"The woman in my dream...that was fighting with Kei? She reminded me so much of Ayako, it was scary." She looked up and winced at the glare the priestess was giving her. "Sorry!"
Ayako rolled her eyes and sighed. "It's alright. I suppose if it's true, it's true." Monk and Yasu snorted, trying and failing to hold back their laughter. Naru chose this moment to cut in.
"Alright. Monk, Ayako, I want you to walk the grounds. Get a feel for what areas are being influenced." The pair sent him incredulous looks.
"Wait." Ayako interrupted. "You want me to provoke the spirit on purpose?" Naru sent her a blank stare.
"Yes."
She let out a groan and slumped into a nearby chair.
"John and Mai, temperatures." Both nodded, gathering their necessary equipment and waited for Naru to finish.
"Yasu, you will escort Miss Hara around the grounds. Miss Hara, see what kind of spirits you can detect and if it is indeed just Kei's spirit or if we have more on our hands." Masako nodded her head and stepped next to Yasu. "Alright. Everyone has their assignments. Get moving."
"Ugh. I'm sick of provoking this stupid spirit." Ayako grumbled as she rubbed the sore spot on her head. She had already been the victim of multiple hair pullings and small, subtle shoves. Monk chuckled.
"I don't blame you. Definitely don't envy your position in this case." Ayako fixed him with a glare.
"Stupid Monk! This is all your fault! If you weren't so damn annoying-" Ayako froze. Her eyes glazed over as she turned to look in the direction of the aquarium. Monk had plugged his ears to her nagging, walking forward. She was almost at the entrance before Monk turned around and saw where she was heading.
"Ayako? Wait! Where are you going?" He called after her. When she didn't respond, he took off at a jog. She walked through the doors and disappeared from his sight. "Dammit." He grumbled.
He took out his phone, dialing a number before running through the aquarium, grabbing at door handles, trying to find where Ayako had disappeared to. He heard the emotionless voice on the other end of the phone.
"What is it, Monk?" Naru asked. Monk had finally found a door he could open. He mentally scolded himself when he saw that it was the door right next to the main entrance. He ran up some stairs, finding himself behind the scenes of the various tanks of the aquarium.
"Ayako was yelling at me and suddenly she just walked away. She's somewhere in the aquarium but I haven't been able to-" His eyes widened when he saw her. She was ahead of him, standing on a small platform that stretched slightly over the top of an aquarium labeled 'Piranha'. Monk's face paled as he watched her step forward. He dropped the phone.
"AYAKO!"
Splash.
Monk didn't hesitate to dive into the water after her. Ayako seemed to snap out of her daze after hitting the water. She looked around, gasping suddenly at the lack of oxygen. A stream of bubbles flew from her mouth. She began to panic as she saw a large shark swim past her.
She saw the blurry form of Monk approaching and she stretched out her hand to him as she felt the panic begin to overwhelm her. Monk swam up to her, grabbing her around the waist and dragging her back up. The broke the surface with a gasp, Ayako flailing slightly as hysteria sunk in.
"Ayako! Calm down! I can't help if you don't calm down!" His voice was uncharacteristically stern, and it helped calm Ayako down. Instead of flailing, she wrapped her arms around his neck as he slowly swam through the water, keeping an arm securely tightened around her waist.
Just as the pair was beginning to calm their frayed nerves, two slender gray fins broke the surface, swimming circles around them. Their stomachs sank with fear as the fins drew closer and closer.
