A/N: Hey guys! Thanks so much for the reviews, and to Foxfire832001 who has being going reviews crazy on my stories lately XD You're awesome! This is a prompt from olorensl1289. I adjusted it a little to make it more manageable, but I hope you still like it :)

Summary – Nick, Sara and Greg are in a car crash, and one of them is in danger of not surviving.

Collision

Nick, Sara and Greg were on a long and dusty road to Arizona in order to attend a convention Grissom had sent them to. It was dark, with no lights out on the completely bare road. Nick was driving, with Sara in the passenger seat and Greg sulky sat in the back. He was less than happy about the whole situation.

"Remind me again why we have to go to this stupid convention?" Greg asked with a very unenthusiastic tone.

"Because if you wanna be a CSI, you gotta learn from other people's experiences" Nick explained.

Greg groaned and rolled his eyes before flopping back in the seat. "Surely I'd learn more from actually getting out in the felid" he pointed out.

"Oh come on, it'll be fun" Sara teased.

Greg raised an eyebrow at her and gave an unimpressed look. "Sara, I think we've safely established what I class as fun and what you class as fun are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum"

"God, you're bitchy when you're unhappy" Nick jibed "Now I'm glad you stay bouncy most of the time"

"I'm sorry if I want to spend my weekend in a club with some chick I'm never going to see again, over sitting in a lecture hall with a bunch of old men, telling me stuff I basically know!" Greg complained.

"Greg, we just want you to have a really good idea of what you're going into as a CSI" Sara told him seriously "We want you to be as prepared as possible, because believe it or not when you take your final proficiency, we want you to pass"

This softened Greg a little "I know" he said with a small smile "It means a lot how much you guys have supported me through this, and I won't let you down. I want more than anything to be a CSI, so I'm going to work hard…even if that means attending these conventions."

"Atta boy" Nick said with a proud smile. "Don't sweat it ya know, you're gunna be an awesome CSI"

"Only because I've got awesome mentors" Greg replied with a smile. "I probably wouldn't have made it this far if you guys hadn't been looking out for me"

"We'll always look out for you, Greg" Sara reassured the young man.

After that, Nick and Sara turned to idle chit-chat about a case they had just worked. Greg looked out the window and thought about how amazing it would be to finally say he had made it, he was officially a CSI level 1. He could help people fight for justice, and finally feel free from the four walled lab which had confined him. He had to grow up a lot to achieve his dream, but it was worth it in the end.

What happened next was a blur. One moment, Greg had been lost in his own thoughts, and the next he was being thrown sideways at such a force, he felt all the wind being knocked out of him. He felt a sharp sensation as the seatbelt cut his skin, but it snapped under the pressure and he collapsed across the seats. He heard Nick and Sara cry out in shock and pain. Greg wanted to ask if they were alright, but when he opened his mouth all he could muster was a small groan.

He'd heard the shattering of glass, as it began to fly around the space of the car like delicate crystals. Except, there was nothing delicate about the way it penetrated Greg's skin, causing the young man's blood to start oozing out and eliciting a cry of pain from his lips. Greg felt his breath grow heavier as he struggled to breath and his vision began to blur. The last thing he heard was Sara's muffled pleas for him to stay awake, before everything went black.

Nick and Sara hadn't seen it coming either. Nick had been perfectly focused on the road ahead as he drove, but it wasn't that particular direction he should have been worried about. Out of nowhere, a brute force suddenly hit the Denali from the side, right where Greg had been sitting. It was enough to provoke a shout of terror from Sara as Nick tried to overcome the shock to get the car back under control.

Nick finally hit the brakes and looked at Sara with terrified eyes. Both of them had sustained a few cuts and bruises from being thrown about and the window's shattering, but it was Greg who they truly had to be worried about. They both turned in panic to see the young man had been flung sideways, now sprawled across the back seat. Whatever had made impact with them had obviously hit Greg too, because the side of the car where he had been sitting was now crushed inwards.

Nick and Sara could see Greg's eyes flickering in pain and confusion as he desperately tried to stay awake, but his head was bleeding and his arm was hanging at a funny angle, not the mention all the shards of glass which were littered over him.

"Greg!" Sara called, quickly turning from her seat and leaning into the back "Greg stay awake for me, okay? You have to stay awake" she was practically begging, but it was no use, the young man's eyes soon fluttered shut.

"Hang on buddy" Nick said as he flung the door open and went to the back. Sara followed him, calling for the cops and an ambulance as she did so.

Nick ripped the door open and leaned inside, gently lifting Greg into his arms and sitting down on the floor with him, Nick's back rest against the side of the car.

"He still has a pulse" The Texan informed Sara as she got off the phone "What the hell happened?" he demanded to know, wanting to beat the crap out of whoever had done this to Greg.

"Let's ask him" Sara snarled, as she noticed the wreck of the other car which had hit them.

She stormed over to find a man slumped face down in the airbag. She ripped the door open with a bout of aggression and shook the man's shoulder. When he didn't respond, Sara checked his pulse, he still had one. She went back over to Nick and Greg.

"Out cold" Sara said bitterly "But his car reeks of alcohol"

"Mother…" Nick started, he mumbled the rest. He looked down sadly at the young man in his arms and protectively held him a little bit closer to his chest "Come on Greggo" he pleaded "Please, just open your eyes"

As if on command, a slight whimper escaped Greg's lips and his glassy brown eyes soon met Nick's frantic ones. "Wh-What?" he stuttered, but then coughed as blood started dripping from his mouth.

"Ssh don't talk, Greg" Sara coaxed as she ran a comforting hand through his hair. "We were in a car crash, but don't worry help's on the way."

"You guys…okay?" the young man asked quietly. His selflessness would never fail to amaze Nick and Sara.

"Yeah, we're fine buddy" Nick reassured him.

"N-Nick?"

"Yeah Greggo?"

"Any ch-chance you could p-pull th-this out?"

With that, Greg let out a cry of pain as he tried to move his broken arm, to reveal a big piece of jagged glass embedded in his lower abdomen. Blood was pouring from the wound.

"Oh my God" Sara breathed, silently berating herself for not noticing before.

Greg's body contracted from the pain and he cried out again "Nick please, get it out!" he begged as tears of agony began to stream down his face.

"I – I can't buddy" Nick said, near tears himself. It hurt him so much to say no and see his younger brother that way. "If I just pull it out it might hurt you worse"

Greg whimpered and nodded in understanding before closing his eyes once more. "I was gunna be a good CSI" he mumbled "I was gunna make you proud…"

"Don't talk like that" Sara said firmly as she squeezed Greg's hand "You're still going to be a good CSI, and we are proud of you"

"I'm sorry" Greg whispered, barely loud enough for them to hear "I'm sorry…I can't…" He went limp.

"Greg!" Nick cried shaking the young man a little in hope of a response, but there was none.

Then, the sound of sirens came.

A coma. Greg was in a coma, and he had been for 3 days now. Throughout that time, if it wasn't both of them, either Sara or Nick would be sat by his bedside, holding his hand or just talking to him, not willing to leave Greg alone.

Greg had died once in the ambulance, a sobbing Sara had grabbed onto Nick for support and the Texan sat trembling with wide eyes as the medics tried to get Greg back. There was a spilt second he thought his friend was gone, but he should have known Greg Sanders would never give up.

Sara and Nick couldn't believe how lucky they were to escape with a few bruises, and cuts which needed stitches at the most. But either of them would trade places with Greg in a heartbeat if it meant he was going to be alright. Now oblivious to the world, it was unclear whether Greg would wake up with brain damage due to his banged head, or if the penetration wound from the glass was infected. It was unclear whether he'd wake up at all.

Brass had arrested the man who'd hit them. He'd woken up a day ago and explained he was depressed about his wife leaving him, so he'd taken a couple of bottles of Whiskey out to the desert to clear his head. Brass pointed out the man would now have plenty of time to 'clear his head' in jail.

Day four, and Sara was sat by Greg's bedside holding his hand, Nick stood leaned back against the wall looking at the young man with sad eyes.

I want more than anything to be a CSI. Nick thought back to what Greg had said before they were hit, the young man had worked so hard, and it was his dream to be out in the field. Nick regretted nothing more than calling Greg a CSI wannabe, because the kid had the smarts and the personality to see it through. And he would see it through.

We'll always look out for you, Greg. That was the promise Sara had made to the young man before they were hit. She had lied, because neither she nor Nick protected Greg from this. She felt guilty beyond belief and so helpless.

"Come on Greggo" she whispered running a thumb across the back of his hand.

"We can't lose you" Nick whispered, nervously biting his thumb. "I won't lose you"

"Sara…"

"Yeah?" she said looking at Nick.

"I didn't say…" Nick stuttered. They shared a confused look for a moment before looking at Greg.

"Greg?" Sara said, giving his hand a squeeze.

"Sara…" the young man repeated quietly before rolling his head and slowly opening his eyes. Nick and Sara could both have cried with joy, 4 days of nothing and Greg was finally coming around.

Nick came closer and stood behind Sara; Greg gave them a lucid smile. "Hey" he croaked.

"Hey yourself" Nick said with a hint of relief "You've been out four days man, you scared us"

"Sorry" Greg said with a small smile.

Sara handed him some water. "I'll go get the doctor" she said. "the sooner he gives you the all clear, the sooner you get to go out and be CSI" she said with a smile.

"Yeah" Greg smiled "I guess now, the dream can live on…"
