Summary – When Greg makes a shocking discovery at a crime scene, he and Morgan realise some things about themselves…

Bundles of Joy

Greg and Morgan arrived at the crime scene, located in an apartment on the west side of Vegas. A woman of about 20 years old was found dead in her bathtub. There were track marks going up and down her arms to suggest she was a frequent drug abuser, along with her pale skin, sunken eyes and gaunt figure. It didn't take a coroner to figure out why she died. Morgan lost the game of rock, paper, scissors and ended up processing the body in the reeking bathroom; there were piles of vomit everywhere.

Greg, meanwhile, searched the rest of the dark and dank apartment. He wondered how the young girl had possibly ended up this way when she had her whole future ahead of her, it was quite sad really. The apartment was extremely unclean and when Greg entered the bedroom, he found the bed sheets so stained he didn't want to even begin to imagine what had go on in there.

The CSI found an empty syringe under the mattress, when he thought he heard some muffled cries coming from down the hall. It wasn't Morgan…or any adult for that matter. The sobs were high pitched and frequent, like that of a young child, an extremely young child. Greg wore a confused frown as he followed the noise to another bedroom. And there, in a small drawer in the corner of the room, was a baby wrapped in a blanket.

Greg quickly went over to the little boy who was squirming around crying his little lungs out; he was 4 months old at the most. The CSI had never considered himself to have a paternal instinct. Originally the youngest of the team, Greg was always use to being the one looked after, but something stirred within him when he saw the helpless baby so ill-treated and abandoned.

"Hey little fella" the CSI cooed as he picked the little boy up into his arms and rocked him gently "Ssh, it's okay now, we'll take care of you" Greg said, because to him it was pretty clear the baby's mother didn't give a damn about him, she'd cared more about the drugs.

"Greg!" Morgan called from down the hall "Is it just me or can you hear…" the female CSI stopped as she entered the room and stared at Greg in amazement. "Is that like, a real baby?" she asked incredulously.

"Erm, yeah" Greg said with a light laugh, before turning back to the little boy who had notably calmed since the CSI started rocking him.

Morgan couldn't help but smile a little at the sight of Greg with the young child. Greg just looked so…natural, with the baby, like he'd been doing it his own life, like he'd always been a dad. Recently, Morgan had found herself contemplating what a future with Greg would be like, and now she felt she was experiencing first-hand what Greg would be like with their own children.

But early to be thinking about children Brody, Morgan thought to herself with a sad feeling you're not even dating yet.

"I think we should get him to the hospital to have him checked over. God knows how long he's just been left there" Greg said with the utmost worry in his voice. It warmed Morgan's heart to see the reminder of just how caring Greg was.

"Sure. We're not that far, I'll drive us down" Morgan said as they headed out the door "It's best you hold him anyway, I'd just drop him" she said gingerly.

"No you wouldn't" Greg said reassuringly. "You're very caring and considerate Morgan, it's not possible for you to hurt him, or any baby. That's why you're going to make an awesome mom someday" he said with a smile. Morgan smiled back; her heart felt like it was doing somersaults.

"What about you?" Morgan asked once they had settled themselves in the car. Greg sat holding the little boy protectively against his chest, and once again Morgan struggled to believe the child wasn't actually his own. "You ever think about being a dad?"

"Sometimes" Greg said as he looked at the baby in his arms "I'd like to think I'd be a good dad, you know…but then sometimes I wonder if I'm still a big kid myself"

"Well, by what Sara and Nick have told me, you've sure grown up a lot" Morgan said with a laugh and Greg rolled his eyes. "And you would be a great dad, you're so loving towards all your friends and…well you already seem a natural with this little guy!" she said indicating to the baby who was now gurgling in his sleep.

"I guess I do just love the thought of being a father" Greg said smiling at the little boy, but then he let out a sad sigh "I just don't feel like it's going to happen anytime soon and…I guess I'm afraid I'm going to run out of time"

"Hey, don't talk like that" Morgan said sternly "You've got loads of time, and when that time comes you're going to be great. You're going to find that perfect girl who you want to mother your children, you deserve it"

"Yeah" Greg said with a small, yet somewhat sad smile towards Morgan which she didn't seem to notice. "Yeah, the mother of my children"

They soon arrived at the hospital, and after Greg quickly explained to nurse the condition in which he'd found the baby, she immediately found a doctor for the little boy to get checked over. Morgan could tell as they sat and waited, that Greg was nervous for the state of the baby, so was she.

"I wonder where his dad is" Morgan said ponderously "Or if he has any other relatives"

"Well we can get some of his DNA and run it though the databases, see if we find anything" Greg replied, although it was clear that wasn't what he was thinking about right now.

"Hey, stop worrying, okay" Morgan said entwining her fingers with Greg's so their hands were clasped together "He seems fine to me. I believe you found him in time and you're his hero" she said with a proud smile.

Greg smiled back "Thanks, Morgs"

"Morgs?" the female CSI said with a light laugh.

Greg blushed "Sorry, don't you like it?"

"Coming from you? Yeah, I like it" Morgan said with a small smile before resting her head on Greg's shoulder.

It felt so right, so comfortable. Greg shifted to rest his head on top of Morgan's and they remained in worried silence, yet content with each other. Twenty minutes later and the doctor returned to tell the CSI's the baby boy was completely fine and he was sleeping in one of the cots after they gave him some milk. Both Greg and Morgan sighed in relief.

"I'm happy to keep the baby in our care until a legal guardian or a social worker can sort something" Doctor Miller explained.

"Thank you" Greg said "Can we see the baby; we need to take a DNA sample so hopefully we can track down the father"

"Yes of course" the doctor said and lead the CSI's to the baby's crib; he seemed to be sleeping soundly.

Greg wore a sad frown; he couldn't believe something so sweet and innocent could be treated so badly. Doctor Miller left and Morgan managed to take a swab without disturbing the little boy.

"Would you mind going back to the lab by yourself?" Greg asked "I don't want to leave Johnny alone"

"Johnny?" Morgan asked confused, but she still smiled at the thought.

Greg blushed again "Well it just seems silly he doesn't have a name and… I guess technically he's a John Doe so…baby Johnny"

"Okay" Morgan said with a soft smile. She could see that Greg was willing to put all his care and protection into the small being. "But…maybe you should try and not get too attached, okay?" she said delicately, she didn't want Greg to end up being hurt.

"Yeah, yeah I know" Greg said absentmindedly as he looked at the baby. Morgan sighed and gave Greg a quick hug in comfort before leaving the room. Greg went over to the newly named Johnny and stroked the little boy's cheek softly with his finger. "I promise everything will be okay…and until then…I'll take care of you"

Suddenly the little boy moved his tiny hands to rub his eyes before blinking and looking up at the man above him. 'Johnny' seemed to smile.

"Hey, buddy" Greg smiled. "You know that lady who was just here? Well I love her, and I want to tell her but…well it's complicated. You're a baby, right? You think she'd make a good mommy, huh? You think she'd take good care of you?" The little boy smiled and gurgled a little as he clapped his hands. Greg laughed "Yeah, I think she would too"

After that 'Johnny' went back to sleep and Greg stayed by his side the whole time. When the baby stirred a little later on, Greg started to sing a little nursery rhyme to him in Norwegian in hope of making him settle. It was a song Greg's mother use to sing to him when he was little.

"Wow" a voice said from behind Greg and he turned to see Morgan watching him. "I didn't realise you spoke the language so beautifully" she complimented.

The lulling tone of his voice had comforted the female CSI also and she could have happily stood and listened to him all day. It was one of the sweetest things she'd ever seen, and she could just imagine Greg stood over the crib of their own baby someday, with the perfect house and family.

"Erm, thanks" Greg said pretty taken aback "I erm… I like how you speak French" he said with a lopsided smile.

"Oh, Merci" Morgan said raising her eyebrow with a seductive pout and Greg laughed. The female CSI came forward and stood by the cot with Greg.

"So what did you find?" the male CSI asked.

"Well Johnny wasn't in the system but both of his parents are; we found he had half alleles in common with each. His mother, Lisa Frank, was in CODIS for - surprise, surprise - selling and dealing drugs. His father, Jordan Higgs was put in jail 5 months ago for armed robbery; he's got a 10 year sentence. They were both only 20 years old"

"Well then they were just stupid kids!" Greg said angrily "What the hell were they thinking!?Bringing a life into this world they knew they couldn't handle, Johnny doesn't deserve this"

"Hey I know, just calm down, okay" Morgan said rubbing his back in a circular motion, although she was impressed with Greg's passion and fight for the small child. "Lisa's sister, Mindy Frank, heard about her sister's death on the news, she's coming to take Johnny to stay with her and her husband. I talked to her, she was worried, but she seemed very nice and they already have two kids so Johnny won't be alone"

"Okay, okay that's good" Greg said, noticeably a lot more calmer. "Ya know I was actually considering, maybe if there was no one to take care of him I should… adopt him or something" he seemed a little embarrassed at the idea.

"Greg, I'm sorry" Morgan said. She could see he had obviously formed a strong bond with the little boy. She hated seeing Greg hurt, but his kindness would never fail to amaze her. "Just wait, like I said, someday you'll find the woman you want to marry, carry your children, and grow old with"

"I think I've already found her" Greg said quietly, as he looked down at Morgan's hand and clasped it in his.

Morgan smiled up at him "And I think she wants the same thing"

I really have no idea what possessed me to think of this plotline, I just guess I can imagine Greg and Morgan being great parental figure sometime in the future ;)
