A/N: What Uuuuuuuup! *said like Adam Ross*. Hey guys! Thank you so much for the reviews on the last story, I can't believe I'm nearly half way there XD I better get a move on with these since I'm moving to University next year!
Anyway, this story is for McGeeklover who as always gave me an awesome Hurt!Greg prompt - Greg taking a bullet meant for Nick. I hope you enjoy!
Summary – Greg makes the ultimate sacrifice when he comes across a man aiming a gun at Nick…Angsty/Bromantic/no character death!
Sacrifice
The CSI's had been hot on the trail of a gang of serial killers for 3 days now. A bunch of disgusting old men going around and killing innocent women on the streets, like modern day Jack the Rippers. Just when the CSI's had thought they'd seen it all, they discovered a bunch of people who actually enjoyed doing things like that, just to get their sick thrills.
It was an all hands on deck case because the CSI's were already 2 people down. Sara was gone, and Warrick's murder had taken place only a month ago, so it was still pretty fresh in all their minds, but even more so in their hearts. The team were about to leave the lab to raid the gang members hideout, but Nick and Greg had been arguing for the past 5 minutes.
"Nick, I really don't get what the bid deal is!" Greg exclaimed for what felt like the 1000th time. "I know how to use a gun, I wouldn't be allowed out in the field if I didn't!"
"I just want to protect you, Greg" Nick said calmly.
"Well you know what; I don't need you to anymore!" Greg yelled angrily "I'm not that crazy kid anymore…In fact, I wasn't even a kid when I met you, so I have no idea where you got this feeling that you have to look after me like my friggin baby sitter!"
"You've never been in this kind of situation before, Greg" Nick retorted. "I don't want to be having to worry about you so much that these guys escape!"
"Oh, so that's it" Greg said folding his arms tightly "You think I'd just screw up?"
"I don't know…maybe!" Nick finally gave in. He was only saying this because quite frankly, he found the real reason he didn't want Greg to come quite embarrassing.
"Thanks Nick, thanks a lot for your support" Greg replied sarcastically "All these years and I thought you were really proud of me"
Nick sighed "Greg, that's not what I…" he started, but the younger man interrupted him.
"Then what is it Nick, huh?" Greg said folding his arms and looking at him expectantly. "Why is it so damn hard for you to…"
"Because I can't lose you!" Nick finally shouted, grabbing Greg's shoulders and shaking him a little in frustration "I've already lost Sara and Warrick I will not lose you too!"
Greg's face immediately softened and he regretted everything he'd just said. "Nick, I'm so sorry" he said quietly, he felt so guilty "I..I didn't…"
"You know what Greg, forget it" Nick said raising his hands and walking away. "You clearly don't want me to care anymore, so I'm not going to" and with that he turned and left to join the others, leaving Greg in shock.
40 minutes later and the CSIs arrived at the gang's hideout, an old warehouse on the outskirts of town. Unaware of the fight they had just had, Grissom sent Nick and Greg to take the back entrance with some other officers, whilst he and Catherine took the front with Brass. Nick just provided Greg a cold look and gave a slight indication with his head for the younger man to follow him; Greg obediently did so.
The youngest CSI was at the back of the line, pulling his gun out and praying he wouldn't have to use it. Greg hated the heavy weight of the weapon in his hands, it was like a burden to him and didn't at all make him feel any safer.
Nick watched Greg out the corner of his eye for a moment, seeing the younger man's shaking hands as he clutched the weapon. Greg seemed to fumble with the gun for a bit, and Nick contemplated asking to take a look at it, just to double check it would work.
No, you don't care, remember. Greg can take care of himself he thought a little bitterly before turning back around.
"Alright, let's go" the cop at the front indicated for the others to follow him in.
The two officers the CSI's were with went to the right, but Nick went to the left. Greg was always taught to stick with the cops, but he didn't feel Nick should be going off alone, even if he did have more experience and was mad at Greg right now. So, the youngest CSI followed Nick, but the Texan himself was unaware of this.
The CSI's went through another doorway, so they were now well and truly alone. There was nothing in the room except a few shelves stacked high with empty barrels. Nick cautiously walked to the middle of the room whilst Greg stayed guard near the entrance.
Suddenly, a shadow emerged from behind one of the shelves, creeping up on Nick who had his back turned. His eyes widening in fear, Greg instinctively raised his gun and pulled the trigger, but a sickening silence followed; no bullet had come out.
"Shit" Greg hissed as he threw the gun aside and ran at the stranger instead "Nick, look out!" he yelled in warning.
Nick quickly spun round with a confused frown, unaware Greg was even with him, but he was met by the barrel of a gun being pointed at him just a few feet away. The man gave a twisted smile and Nick froze up from the fear as he kept his eyes on the weapon.
The man pulled the trigger.
The next thing Nick knew, he was looking down at the man who had been pushed to the floor by Greg. The kid had come out of nowhere and somehow managed to knock the guy out in the process. Nick sighed in relief realising the man must have missed him with the bullet, there was no burst of pain in his body.
"Nick" Greg said in a terrified whisper as he rolled off the man.
"No" Nick breathed as he saw the crimson red patch beginning to blossom on Greg's stomach. Now he knew where the bullet was. "No!" he cried in alarm before running to Greg and brining him into his arms. "No Greggo, no, no, no"
"Nick" Greg said again looking up at the Texan with tear filled eyes. "Nick…it h-hurts" he cried out in pain as Nick placed his hands over the wound to keep pressure on it.
"Ssh, I know buddy just hold on" Nick said running a comforting hand through the younger mans hair. "Help!" he yelled "Someone please help!" One of the officers arrived, and seeing the state Greg was in immediately left to call an ambulance.
"It r-really h-hurts…and I'm s-so t-tired…" Greg whispered. His eyes were beginning to droop closed and he was becoming pale and clammy.
"Why did you do that, Greg?" Nick asked trying to fight the emotions which were beginning to overwhelm him. "Why did you do this to yourself? You should have let him shoot me"
"I couldn't do that" Greg replied as he lightly took hold of Nick's wrist "You said earlier all you ever wanted to do was protect me…so I had to return the favour"
"But I said…I said that horrible thing, Greg" Nick said, finally letting a tear escape "I said I didn't care anymore, but I do, I do care. I care so much Greggo, please don't give up on me, please"
"And I care about you too, that's why I had to do this" Greg said. "You're my big brother, Nick. You always will be, I hope you know that even when I'm acting like an annoying brat."
"Yeah, but you're my annoying brat. My kid brother" Nick said with a sad smile. "Oh God Greg please hold on, I can't lose you, I can't!"
"This is my own fault Nick, I chose to do this for you." Greg said his head lolling a little to the side. "Don't feel guilty…don't…" he stopped talking. His eyes closed and his body went limp.
"Oh my God, Greg!" Nick exclaimed shaking him a little "Greg, please wake up…please" he begged, but there was no response and all Nick could do was hold the young man protectively tighter in his arms and cry.
Suddenly, paramedics were storming into the room along with Grissom, Catherine and Brass. All three of them froze in shock at the sight of Greg. It was like a horrific sense of déjà vu…like Warrick all over again. Nick was reluctantly made to leave the younger mans side despite his protests.
Catherine ran to the Texan and let him cry into her shoulder as they watched the medics take Greg away.
"This is all my fault" Nick whispered into Catherine's shoulder "This is all my God damn fault!"
Greg was in a critical condition. The doctors had already had to resuscitate him twice and now the youngest CSI had slipped into a coma; he'd been out for 2 days now. Nick refused to leave Greg's side, despite Catherine telling the Texan he needed rest.
Nick was still adamant on blaming himself despite what Greg said. He should never had told the young man he didn't care… because the truth was he was never going to stop protecting Greg, whether the kid liked it or not, because that's just what big brothers do. This didn't seem right, Greg was the younger brother, and he shouldn't have to do this, should he? Yet he still wanted to protect Nick, even after the older man had been such an ass to him.
Nick leant forward in his chair and took Greg's hand in his. "Come on kiddo" he encouraged "I need you man…you're the only sibling I have left in Vegas and I need you"
Suddenly, Greg let out a small whimper and his head started to roll around on the pillow. Growing excited, Nick squeezed the younger man's hand in encouragement and Greg soon turned to look at him with glassy eyes.
"Nick" Greg said quietly as he was still coming to his senses "Thank God… I was so scared"
"So was I buddy" Nick said, running a hand through the younger man's hair "I thought I was going to lose you…but you don't have to be scared anymore"
"You were right though" Greg said and Nick frowned at him in confusion "I did screw up…my stupid gun didn't fire…"
"I should have checked it for you" Nick said "I know you don't know a lot about that kind of stuff, and I should have checked it for you before we went in, I'm sorry"
"Hey, it's not your fault" Greg reassured him "It's mine, and you almost got killed because of it"
"I'm not the one lying in the hospital bed, G" Nick reminded him with a sad smile.
"Well…would you take a bullet for me?" Greg asked seriously.
"Yes of course I would" Nick replied "Without a second of a doubt"
"Then that's all I need to know" Greg said with a small smile "I just hope you don't have to put it into practise anytime soon"
"Yeah, me too" Nick said with a slight laugh "I can't thank you enough, Greg. You saved my life"
"Hey, you've put your protection into me for all these years. It was time for me to give something back" Greg said with a small smile, which Nick returned.
"I'm so proud of you" the older CSI said.
Greg smiled "Thanks. I'm proud of me too"
And with that, Nick swore to himself to keep a better eye on Greg next time, because the thought of losing the young man forever was unbearable. Greg was always going to be like a little brother to Nick, no matter how old they were.
Aww I love writing stories like this ^_^
So, I've had LOADS of requests and prompts for Morganders, which I am of course totally happy with! :D But, I would like some different stuff thrown into the mix. So, if you have any different ideas too, that would be great! :)
