A/N: Wow! I'm so happy that you guys still love these stories, thanks for the feedback! Another awesome hurt Greg prompt from McGeeklover, this time suggesting Nick save Greg from drowning. So, here ya go!
Summary – A crime scene at Lake Mead leaves Greg fighting for his life, when a stranger drags him into the water.
Drowning
Nick and Greg arrived at their crime scene upon a hill, across from Lake Mead. It was a frosty winter night -too cold for the usual young lovers to be out for some late night swimming- leaving the area quite deserted expect for the two CSI's and a cop sent to watch them.
Greg was in an extremely eager mood. This was the first crime scene he'd been sent to in a while, and although Nick appreciated the young man's enthusiasm, he hoped this wouldn't affect Greg's performance, and slow them down. It was late, freezing cold, and all Nick wanted to do was get this over with so he could go home to his warm bed.
Greg, in his eagerness, didn't consider just how cold it might be, and therefore wasn't wearing a thick coat like Nick was, just a tee-shirt and jumper under his CSI vest, leaving the young man shivering relentlessly. Nick contemplated the fact he could scold Greg for this - just like at the bus crash scene – but decided to let the younger man suffer in silence, since he clearly hadn't learnt his lesson.
Nick had started to take pictures of the dead teenager and Greg was scouring the ground with his torch in hope of sighting the murder weapon. By the looks of the stab wounds in the young female's torso, he was looking for some kind of knife. The cop they were with – whom Nick immediately deemed incompetent – was sat in his car listening to the radio.
"Greg, you should be over here watching me do this" Nick pointed out as he looked at the younger man, who just seemed to be walking around in circles.
"I know how the take pictures, Nick" Greg replied stubbornly and Nick raised any eyebrow at him.
"Greg, when we're at a crime scene you do as I say" the Texan replied sternly. He'd never asked to be a teacher, and he wasn't particularly happy about it. Grissom owes me for this.
"But I'm looking for the murder weapon!" Greg protested sulkily "I am actually doing something productive, you know"
"Fine, do whatever you want!" Nick said throwing his hand up in exasperation "But don't come crawling to me for help when you screw up! I am not taking the wrap for you!" with that he turned back around with a huff and continued to take pictures.
Greg stood in shock for a moment with sad eyes as he contemplated apologising, he knew Nick was only trying to help him, but the Texan needed some time to cool down. Maybe if I do find the weapon, then he'll be happy with me! Greg thought, putting his eager smile back on as he continued to walk around.
Eventually, he found himself straying away from Nick; the Texan was still knelt down processing and had his back to Greg. The young trainee was stood on the edge of the hill now, looking down at the lake. It was quite beautiful really, how the moon light shimmered off the calm waters.
It was whilst he was admiring the view, that Greg spotted an object glinting in the moonlight, just by the edge of the lake. The young man smiled ecstatically and went to get it, when he remembered he should probably tell Nick where he was going. Greg turned back, but saw that Nick still seemed deep in his work. Not wanting to disturb him, Greg started to make his way down the side of the hill to get the object.
The closer Greg got the lake, the colder it seemed to get. The young man folded his arms tightly across his chest as he ran over to the silver item. Greg couldn't help but give himself a little fist pump in triumph, as he discovered the strange object was indeed a knife, and there was still traces of blood on it. Greg took a few pictures, before placing his camera down so he could bag the knife, and then put it in his vest pocket.
Suddenly, a hand appeared over Greg's mouth and then an arm was wrapped strongly across his chest. Greg tried to cry out for help but it just came out a muffled, and the figure squeezed him tighter to make him shut up.
"Give me the knife, kid" the stranger demanded in a gruff voice; he appeared to be a similar age and build to Nick. Greg looked at him with frightened eyes, but shook his head. He couldn't betray a case like that, and he couldn't make Nick madder at him. "I ain't playing games with you kid, give it to me now!" he commanded. Greg started shivering even worse as the cold mixed in with his fear. "Fine" the man snarled "If that's how you want to do it"
With that, the man started to drag Greg into the water. The young CSI tried screaming again as he kicked and splashed about, hoping to make enough noise to attract attention. However, the man was strong, and no matter how hard Greg fought, he soon found himself so far out in the lake that his feet couldn't touch the bottom anymore.
"Are you going to give me the knife now?" the man asked sharply as he finally removed his hand from Greg's mouth.
"Go to hell" Greg retorted with as much venom in his tone as he could muster, but he soon regretted it, as the man simply grabbed the young CSI's hair and pushed Greg's head under the water.
Greg had to remind himself not to scream unless he wanted his lungs to fill with water. The young man was terrified as he tried to fight his way back to the surface, hitting and scratching at the man, but it was no use. Greg couldn't see anything under the pitch black water, and he was convinced he was going to die.
Suddenly, the man pulled Greg back up again and the young man started spluttering and coughing violently as he greedily gulped in some air.
"Are you convinced yet?" the man asked with a twisted smile, enjoying the pain he was causing.
Greg just looked at him with wide eyes and listened to his own laboured breathing for a moment before crying out. "Nick!" he yelled as loud as he could, before he found himself being plunged into the icy water once more.
Nick had finally finished processing the body, when he realised just how quiet Greg was being. He knew this was a bad sign. "Greg!" he called, turning around and scanning the area, but he couldn't see the younger man anywhere. "God damn it" he seethed. Nick was highly annoyed but couldn't help the niggling feeling of worry which was stirring within him. "Greg!" he called again. Silence followed.
The feeling of worry within Nick was growing stronger. It was then the CSI heard a disturbance in the water below. Making his way over to the edge of the hill, Nick looked down into the lake. He couldn't make out much because it was so dark, but the CSI could have sworn he saw a figure in their splashing about. Suddenly, another figure appeared, and Nick realised the first figure had been holding them under the water.
"Nick!" the person who'd been held under called. Nick felt his heart sink and his eyes go wide in fear.
"Greg" he breathed and watched in horror as the stranger pushed his best friend back under the water. "Hey, call for back up and some medics!" Nick called to the lazy officer in his car before running down to the lake.
Nick could feel the fear building within him as he watched Greg helplessly flailing around. He could also feel the rage growing at the man who seemed to be laughing in pleasure as he forced Greg to be drowning. Without warning, Nick pulled out his gun and pulled the trigger, hitting the man in his back. The man let out a cry of pain and feel forward in the water. In doing so he let go of Greg, but Nick worried as to why the young man was not resurfacing.
Nick immediately dived in and swam over to where his friend was. He saw Greg floating just below the surface. It scared Nick, the young man looked like a ghost, eyes closed and face pale. He pulled Greg up, and Nick's heart nearly stopped when he realised Greg wasn't gasping for air. Instead, his head just hung limply across Nick's shoulder, and his blue lips were slightly parted.
Nick quickly made his way back to the water's edge, reluctantly bringing the other man with him. As soon as they were back on land, Nick sat with Greg pulled closely to his chest, the young man was so cold he was like a Popsicle…but then why wasn't Greg shaking? With trembling fingers Nick searched for a pulse on Greg's neck. His eyes grew wide. There wasn't one.
"No, no come on, G" Nick pleaded with tears in his eyes as he ran a thumb across Greg's cheek "You c-can't do this t-to me" he begged as he placed his forehead on Greg's and let the tears begin to slip "Please Gr-Greggo, I'm so s-sorry"
Just then, the medics arrived and Nick found himself being pushed to the side and watched helplessly as they worked on his friends still form. They managed to get Greg's pulse back with some CPR, but it was weak.
"Sir, come on" A medic said coming up behind Nick and placing a hand on his shoulder "We need to check you over"
"No, you need to focus on Greg" Nick protested, he didn't realise how hard he was shaking himself.
"Come on, you can ride in the ambulance with your friend" the female medic said gently as she lead the way.
Greg was currently sleeping after he'd been through a procedure to get the water out of his lungs. Both he and Nick were told they'd be fine. Nick was sat by his friend's bedside waiting for Greg to wake up. When the young man eventually he did, he looked at Nick with scared eyes and he was still noticeably shaking.
"Hey Greggo, you gave me a really bad scare back there" Nick said with a sad smile. He enveloped Greg's hands within his in hope of giving him some warmth.
"To be honest, I didn't think you'd come" Greg said with a raspy voice, his voice still sore from all the coughing. "Not after I was such a brat to you. I know you were only trying to help me Nick, and I'm sorry"
"Hey, I'm the one who should be saying sorry" Nick said running a gentle hand through Greg's hair "I shouldn't have been so short tempered with you"
"Let's just say we both said things we're not proud of and forget about it" Greg suggested with a small smile, which Nick returned as he nodded in agreement. "Did you find the knife?" Greg asked. Nick just looked at him confused. "I found the murder weapon, that's why the guy tried to drown me; I wouldn't give it to him. It's in my vest pocket, you should –"
"Hey, that doesn't matter now" Nick told him. "I'm proud of you Greg, but you should have given him the knife, it wasn't worth nearly losing your life for"
"I didn't want to disappoint you" Greg said sadly "You were so mad at me…"
"That doesn't matter Greg, sometimes you have to put yourself first in a job like this" Nick stated. He felt guilty that Greg thought he had to do that, just for him.
Greg gave him a small smile "Thanks for saving me" he whispered.
"Anytime, bro" Nick replied with a smile "Anytime"
