A/N: Bonjour! Thank you so much for the reviews on the last story! This prompt comes from olorensl1289. I just want to say I'm sorry it's so late, I totally missed out the prompt and only found it recently after going back through my reviews, so sorry about that! The request was for a shooting at Warrick's funeral. Gotta be totally honest, I haven't seen many episodes surrounding Warrick's death (*Gasp* bad CSI fan!) so I'm sorry if details are off, but this is obviously AU anyway XD
Summary – The CSI's go to say goodbye to Warrick. Emotions were already running high, but then Greg spotted the man with the gun…AU of 'For Warrick'.
Delayed Goodbye
The atmosphere was tense and morose as the crowd of people began to line the benches; the CSI night shift took up the first row. Catherine and Nick sat together clasping each other's shaking hand, tear streaks tarnishing both of their complexions. Sara sat staring at the podium, tears glistening in her eyes as she watched her husband try to speak and fight tears of his own. Greg was sat on the end, trying to listen to Grissom's heartfelt words as he spoke about Warrick, but the youngest CSI found in hard to concentrate against the overwhelming grief.
Greg sighed as he lowered his head and looked at the floor, he still couldn't believe this was happening. His friend, he mentor, his big brother was gone… and he didn't think he could even begin to feel any worse.
Someone in the bench next to Greg made a sudden movement, catching the young CSI's attention. Greg didn't recognise the man, and assumed him to be an outside work friend of Warrick's, or perhaps somehow linked to Tina. Greg watched with a confused frown as the man reached into his pocket and began to draw something cautiously into view. The young CSI's eyes widened in horror as he recognised a handle of a gun.
Sara noticed that something seemed to have grabbed her younger friend's attention, and placed a hand on his shoulder in question. Greg slowly turned round to face her, and Sara was confused to see the fear in his eyes, she'd expected sadness, but not fear. She gave him an inquiring look.
"Get…down" Greg whispered ever so quietly, Sara wasn't sure she'd heard him correctly.
Greg suddenly turned back around, launching himself across the aisle and started struggling to get the man on the ground. There were cries of horror and anger at the service being interrupted. Nick jumped up to ask Greg what the hell he thought he was doing, but the rage was soon turned to shock when a gunshot rang out around the church.
People started screaming all over again, as gunshots suddenly started to go off in all directions. There were at least 5 people in the room with guns spread out over the place, and it was just typical luck that they would make a hit on a room full of Law Enforcement, when none of them were carrying guns.
Guests started ducking under the seats, some managing to make an escape through the exit, other's trying to make a run for it but not being so lucky, as cries of pain were soon bouncing around the walls. Grissom ran back over to his team and grabbed Sara, using his body to shield her. Nick did the same with Catherine and there were a few people along with Greg who decided to try and apprehend the shooters. It was utter chaos.
"Greg!" Nick called; wanting to make sure his friend was alright.
From his position on the floor, Nick could see his young friend scuffling with the shooter he had tackled. He watched as Greg managed to punch the guy twice across his face, before lunging for the gun, but the man recovered quickly and kicked Greg in his chest, sending the young man flying across the floor.
Two of the other men had managed to be disarmed from other members of the service, including Brass. That just left the man Greg was detaining and two others. One was stood in the doorway threatening to shoot anyone else who tried to leave – some cops were trying to talk him down. The other was firing random shots now and again, the look of glee on his face suggesting he hoped he would hit someone. There were people many injured, some more serious than others, but they could only hope the escaped people had called for help.
By this point, Greg and the man had picked themselves up on the floor and were facing each other like a standoff – this was personal now. The man raised his gun to Greg, but the CSI ducked and managed to slide tackle the intruder to the ground, causing the man to hit his head. Greg went to take the gun once more, but the man grabbed onto his arm and pulled the CSI to the ground, pinning Greg down by his shoulder an pointing the gun at his head.
"Grissom, we have to help him!" Sara said frantically, watching Greg struggle.
"You and Cath stay here, Nick and I will go" Grissom said firmly. Sara didn't argue, she knew Grissom just wanted to protect them because he couldn't risk losing them too, and he knew Nick would go help his little brother whether he was told to stay or not.
Nick immediately ran up behind the bastard and pulled him off Greg, flinging the shooter up against the wall and getting some punches in himself.
"Are you okay?" Grissom asked Greg concernedly. The young man's head was bleeding along with his nose and a split lip, as well as a black eye he was developing.
"Yeah I'm fine" Greg breathed, although he was still shaking from fear, adrenaline, and rage.
Suddenly, another gunshot rung out and Greg and Grissom snapped their heads around to find Nick staggering back in pain, clutching at his shoulder where a red patch of blood was blossoming.
"Get Nick out of here!" Greg exclaimed to Grissom as he scrambled to his feet and started to scuffle with the shooter once more.
Grissom immediately lead Nick back over to Sara and Catherine so that he was out of harm's way. Catherine started to put pressure on the wound as Nick tried to breathe through the pain.
Meanwhile, Greg had once again managed to get the shooter to the floor. Slamming his elbow into the man's chest so that the wind was knocked out of him, Greg finally managed to prise the gun from the bastard's hand, and stood over him, finger on the trigger.
"Stay the hell down!" Greg commanded as the man just looked up at him in shock.
By this time, some more cops and a swat team had arrived outside of the church. After making the attackers realise they were severely outnumbered and that the majority of their own were now injured, the men finally surrendered, although they didn't at all seem fazed by the prospect, clearly happy that they had caused enough pain.
Officers came to take the men away, and paramedics started to take the injured people away. Grissom went over to Brass to discuss what their next move should be, whilst Catherine went with Nick to get him patched up. Sara went over to a shaking Greg who had still not yet lowered the gun as he turned to look at his friend's coffin.
"I'm so sorry, Warrick" the young man whispered "I'm so, so sorry" and with that, the young man began to sob from so much pent up emotion over the past few days. Sara came over and pulled him into a tight hug, letting Greg cry relentlessly into her shoulder.
An hour later and Nick was sat on an examination table in A&E as he waited for the Doctor to come back with a prescription for some pain medication. The bullet in his shoulder was a simple flesh wound and was easily removed and stitched up without the need for surgery. Whilst he was sat waiting, Greg snuck into the room after having been stitched up himself.
"Hey, how are you doing?" the young CSI asked his depressed looking friend.
"I just… I can't believe this happened" Nick said running a hand down his face "This was supposed to be a day were we got to say goodbye… be honourable of Warrick's memory…what kind of sick bastards just start a shootout at a funeral?"
"The kind who must have known that making a hit on a room full of cops would mean they'd end up in jail" Greg said as he sat beside his friend and put a comforting hand on his back. "I'm sorry you got shot"
"Yeah, but I got to walk away. Warrick didn't" Nick pointed out as he lowered his head in sadness "Even in death, people won't let him be in peace."
"Hey, Warrick would have wanted you to walk away" Greg told him firmly "He wouldn't have wanted you killed, at his funeral of all places…maybe it was just his presence that helped see us through…"
"Yeah, and you" Nick said giving the younger man a small smile "You kicked ass today, G. I'm serious!" he added when the young man just laughed "How the hell did you learn to fight like that?"
"I got two older brothers…" he said giving Nick's unwounded shoulder a slight nudge. "They taught me to become independent… and to be strong…plus they liked to rip on me sometimes so I had to learn to fight against them" he said with a smile.
"You know…after I got beat up, I told Warrick that I wanted to bulk up a little so that I wouldn't feel like such a pushover anymore. He offered to take me down to the gym a few times a month, and he trained me a little…on the punching bags and stuff" Greg repeated the memory with a smile "I knew that Warrick had been tough all his life, and I wanted to be like him. I'd never felt so close to him than when I was just…punching stuff with him" he said and both CSI's laughed.
"Yeah, Warrick was just…one of the guys" Nick said with a fond smile. He realised he didn't know much about Greg and Warrick's relationship outside of work, and would love to hear more stories. "He was proud of you, G, you know that?" The Texan asked. Greg nodded. "And with those awesome moves, he would definitely have been proud today" he added with a smile.
"I hope so…" Greg said with a sheepish look. "I felt kind of…guilty. I reacted first; I feel like I ruined his send-off …he didn't deserve that"
"No, he didn't" Nick agreed "But it wasn't your fault either and don't you ever think that"
Greg gave him a small smile "I just lost control, you know? Just the thought of what these bastards were doing…they knew what they were doing…God, it made me so angry."
"Same here" Nick said "That and…watching that guy kick my little brother to ground made my blood boil, man"
"Well, thanks for coming to the rescue, or else I'd have never disarmed that guy" Greg replied.
"You're welcome. You did the right thing today" Nick assured him.
The door opened again and Grissom, Catherine and Sara entered the room. The girls took it in turns hugging Nick and Greg, and Grissom looked perplexed.
"The shooters were hired by Mckeen before he was arrested" Grissom informed them "Apparently killing Warrick wasn't a big enough message."
"I hope that guy rots in hell" Catherine spoke up with tears in her eyes and the other's nodded.
"We can rearrange everything, right?" Greg asked hopefully. "And still say goodbye to Warrick"
"Of course we can" Sara said, rubbing his arm.
"Warrick is a part of this family, and he will always be a part of it" Nick said. "So he deserves the best send-off we can give."
"Agreed" Greg said "Now, as soon as Nick gets the all-clear, what do you say we get out of here and reminisce, about the good times we had with Warrick."
"Sounds like a plan" Nick said with a smile.
This is a little bit nuts in some aspects, but I do like writing about badass Greg sometimes XD and I kinda made it focus around him because I don't think the friendship that he and Warrick had was expressed enough, but, I hope you liked!
I would love more prompts and reviews if possible :) xx
