Hi everyone!
I think we've established that I am HORRIBLE at keeping New Year's Resolutions, haven't we? I'm so sorry to you all, and I hope you haven't given up on me just yet.
To thank you all for being so patient with me, here is a nice little chapter that confirms all of your suspicions. I was going to save it for later on in the story, but I couldn't keep it in any longer. Read on to find out!
I will try to upload more frequently, I promise.
Haymitch
I woke up after a dreamless sleep to find that it was the middle of the night. Effie was asleep next to me, her natural face soft and sweet in the light of the moon outside of the train.
A sudden headache hits me, and I know what will help. I get out of bed, grab my dressing gown, and walk out into the living area. However, I soon find that I'm not alone. The kids are sitting on the sofa, watching a tape on the TV. My tape, I realise with a jolt. I see a much younger me, with my insides hanging out, kneeling on the edge of that cliff as the girl from One throws her axe. It's weird seeing myself from an outsider's point of view; I looked super banged up. Not surprising really.
The axe misses me by an inch, and then comes flying back from the force field, landing in the girl's skull with a horrible thud. I don't wince, because I've seen it before.
The kids sit there in silence, and then start to talk about my victory. I am about to go back to my room, not wanting to talk to the kids about my Games, when Katniss says something that stops me.
"Bet that's why I don't remember seeing it on television. It's almost as bad as us and the berries!" She laughs manically.
I step into the room behind them, and then announce myself. "Almost, but not quite."
The kids whirl around, startled, and I can see them bracing themselves for a lecture about watching my tape. It doesn't come, though, as I grab a bottle of wine and take a long swig of it. That gets me a disapproving look from Peeta, and I smirk at him. I'm allowed to drink now, I'm not the one going into the Games again.
"Get some sleep." I say, with more force than I intended, and then leave, going back to Effie and my bed.
Effie
Once we get to the Capitol, everything happens so fast that Haymitch and I get no real time alone. There's all the preparations to do for the opening ceremonies and the Games themselves that I'm rushed off my feet.
The opening ceremony for the Quarter Quell is better than ever before, with all of the designers stepping up their game to make their tributes look the best. Katniss and Peeta win best outfit, with their flaming clothes that make them look sinister and dark.
Once the ceremony is over, I catch Haymitch talking with Chaff and Seeder. I catch his eye, and he excuses himself.
We pretend to argue and be annoyed with each other until we step into the elevator. Haymitch quickly presses the close-door button, meaning that we'd have the lift all to ourselves. He pulls me close and kisses me roughly. I wind my arms around him and pull him against me, running my fingers through his tangled hair. Something inside me wants to take all of his clothes off right here, but the more proper side of me knows that that wouldn't be a wise idea.
"I've missed you." Haymitch growls into my lips as he breaks the kiss.
"I've missed you too. Once this all dies down, we can have more time together." I whisper, tracing my fingers down his nose and along his jawline as we draw further apart. The lift comes to a stop on our floor, and we exit. I give Haymitch a little glance, smiling, but then stop short as his face hardens at something he can see in front of us. Katniss has noticed it too, stopping in front of us. I look over to where they're looking, and notice the Avoxes. There's the girl from last year, but the male is a new addition. Something inside of me twinges, telling me that I know that face from somewhere.
They both have red hair, so I say brightly, "Looks light they've got you a matched set this year."
Haymitch grabs Katniss' wrist, as if to stop her from going towards the Avoxes. She snatches her hand away and storms into her room. Peeta goes too, obviously stunned by the new Avox.
I look at the Avox, so convinced that I know his face. Haymitch obviously knows him, and Katniss does too, so he must be connected to Twelve. I follow Haymitch for a moment, and then whisper to him to tell me who he is.
"Darius, Twelve's ex-Head Peacekeeper." He doesn't say anything else, just walks into his room, leaving me stunned in the hallway.
I return to the living room and look at the Avox. He was the Head Peacekeeper? He must have done something serious to have ended up here. It was obvious why he was serving Twelve, though. Katniss knew him, and this was Snow's idea of keeping her in check.
I set about working until dinner was ready, and then summoned the kids.
The rest of the evening was quiet, what with Haymitch and Katniss still reeling about Darius' punishment. Haymitch didn't come to my room that night, and I didn't bother to go to his.
Instead, I rang my mother. I needed to talk to her.
"Hi Mother!" I chirped breezily when she picked up.
"Hello Effie, how are you? Your tributes looked incredible tonight in the ceremony, you must be so proud!" Mother was excited, as usual. In the background, I heard a baby-like babble.
"Yes Mother, very proud. Is that Percy I can hear?" I asked, feeling warmth spread through me.
I needed to hear and talk to my daughter, after all that had happened over the last few weeks.
"Yes, she's decided to be a little madam and not go to sleep. She's definitely your daughter." Mother chastised.
As far as Mother knew, Percy, or Persephone, was my daughter, and Seneca Crane was her father. She knew that Seneca and I had had a relationship, so it was easier to tell her that my baby was his, rather than reveal her true father.
She had been conceived on the morning of the reaping last year, when I had given in to the pent-up need for my childhood crush, and we had slept together. When I found out I was pregnant, I was seriously shocked. It was after the Games had finished, after I found out that Seneca was dead. I knew the baby was Haymitch's, but I knew the stigma that revealing her true parentage would bring onto me, so I lied. Seneca was dead, and couldn't refute her. I almost felt bad, but it would keep Persephone safe, because who knows what might happen to her if anyone found out that she was Haymitch Abernathy's daughter?
Haymitch didn't know. I wanted to tell him, so much, but I knew he'd be so stunned, and once he knew, other people might find out too. So I kept it to myself, my secret, mine alone to bear.
"Hello Percy!" I cooed into the phone, and heard her babble back. She was only three months old, having been born just before the Victory Tour started. It killed me to leave her, but duty called. I saw her at every available moment, but I knew it wasn't enough. I wanted to hold her all the time, to look into those gorgeous grey eyes that were so obviously Haymitch's.
"How has she been?" I asked, and launched into a half-an-hour long conversation about Percy and her behaviour. Once I had hung up, I reached into my bag and pulled out the picture that I had taken of my baby girl before I left for Twelve a week ago. She had the sweetest little face, with chubby cheeks and a bright smile. She had tiny tufts of light hair on her head, which told me that she would be blonde, like me. Her eyes were grey and sparkling, which made her look so much like her father. She would be the perfect mix of the both of us, and yet she'd probably never know who her father really is. As long as the Capitol stood, she would have to be kept a secret from him.
I fell asleep once I had taken off all my finery, with the picture of my daughter tucked next to me. In my dreams, I was with her, and we were in a better world, where she knew her father, and she wouldn't have to be scared. Haymitch and I would raise her to be a perfect young woman, ladylike but strong, the perfect mix of the two of us.
Well well well, the plot thickens!
Yes, Haymitch and Effie have a baby, who I have named Persephone, or Percy for short. It's a very Capitol-like name, so I figured it suited a Capitol baby.
I hope you enjoyed, and I hope you stick around for more.
