Summary – Greg is anxious when he and Morgan arrive at their crime scene, and he has every right to be so when he ends up being attacked… Morganders!

Alley Woes

Greg and Morgan were heading out to their crime scene; a suspected homicide in a back alley out in the dodgy side of town.

The night had started off as normal, with Morgan teasing Greg about his slow driving, and Greg saying Morgan's driving would run them off the road sooner or later. Greg loved joking with Morgan and seeing the bright smile which lit up her face, and made the mischievous glint appear in her crystal eyes. Greg could easily get lost in those big blue orbs, and would take great pleasure in waking up to them every day.

Morgan loved being with Greg too. There was something safe about him which made the female CSI want to be constantly held in his arms, and he was always so professionally engaged in his work that Morgan could have sworn he'd been a CSI longer than 7 years. Greg was an inspiration for Morgan, and she aspired to become the only one for him.

When the CSI's finally reached the scene, Morgan noticed the sudden change in Greg's character. He stopped talking as soon as Morgan pulled over at the top of the alley, and the smile soon vanished from his face. Morgan frowned; was it something I said?

Without another word, Greg got out of the car and headed to the trunk to get their cases. Morgan followed silently, deciding not to push Greg if he didn't want to talk anymore. As they walked down the alley towards the body, Morgan noticed how Greg seemed to grow tense, and he was gripping the handle of his kit so hard his knuckles had turned white.

"Greg, are you okay?" Morgan asked, no longer being able to take seeing her friend that way.

"Huh?" Greg replied as if he didn't know what Morgan was talking about "Yeah I'm fine, why wouldn't I be?" he plastered on a very forced smile.

Morgan stopped walking, grabbing Greg's arm lightly and turning him to face her "What's bothering you, Greg?" she asked with a gentle tone "C'mon, talk to me, please"

Greg sighed, Morgan seemed genuinely concerned, and he didn't like the thought that he was making her upset "It's just…remember how I told you about the whole beating thing?" he said sheepishly. Morgan nodded. "Well, it happened in an alley just like this, not that far away in fact and ever since…well, being somewhere like this brings back memories and…I guess I just don't feel safe, and I'm a little paranoid" he looked down at his feet feeling weak and ashamed.

Morgan put her hand on his shoulder and Greg looked up at her with sad eyes. "Greg, you have nothing to worry about, I promise. How you feel is totally understandable, you shouldn't feel bad, it's okay to need support sometimes."

"I…I just feel so pathetic" Greg shuddered.

"Well you're not" Morgan told him firmly "C'mere" she said with a soft smile, pulling Greg into a hug. "I'm here with you, and we're both armed. I've got your back, don't ever forget that" she told him seriously.

"Thank you" Greg said quietly as he buried his head in Morgan's sweet smelling hair. "That means a lot to me" He had been pining for the younger woman to be in his arms, and it felt completely right.

"You're welcome" Morgan replied with a smile. She liked that Greg could be open about his feelings, and she would happily sit and listen to him talk all day. "Now, let's get to work" she said pulling away, but still keeping a loose hold of Greg's had "Together" she added, and the familiar genuine smile reappeared on Greg's face. It made Morgan's heart flutter.

The CSIs had been working at the scene for nearly an hour. The cop who was with them had to take another call out nearby, making Greg even more nervous at being left in the alley, but Morgan had reassured him everything was going to be fine, and that they would be done soon anyway.

The scene was extremely messy, with blood splattered all over the place. Eventually, Morgan had taken so many pictures that her camera started beeping to tell her the memory card was full. Realising she'd left her spare back in the truck, Morgan bit her bottom lip and looked at Greg.

"Hey, I just need to go back to the car quickly and get a new card for my camera" she said, Greg hadn't brought his as he was assigned the job of taking samples and bagging evidence.

"Okay" Greg said with a small smile, but Morgan didn't move, looking concerned. "I'll be okay on my own for a few minutes, Morgan." He reassured her. It made him feel good that she cared so much.

"Well, if you're sure" Morgan said, still sounding uncertain herself "I'll be really quick I promise" and with that, she began to practically jog from the alley.

Greg chuckled to himself "You're so adorable" and he would tell Morgan that someday.

The male CSI watched as Morgan rounded the corner, and then he turned back to his work. Greg wasn't going to pretend he was feeling completely fine, and those all but too familiar memoires were creeping up on him, and he noticed his hands beginning to shake. Greg cursed under his breath, that's the last thing he wanted, as if admitting to Morgan that he felt a little scared wasn't embarrassing enough. She'd never respect him if she thought he was a coward, and that was the last thing Greg wanted from the woman he secretly cherished.

Greg was trying so hard to concentrate on his work that he didn't notice the shadow begin to move behind him. The male figure stepped forward from the wall, deciding to make a move from where he'd previously been lurking. He may have been a murderer, but he was a gentleman, and he'd never hurt a lady, so the scrawny man before him would have to do.

He lunged forward, wrapped the piece of rope he was carrying around the CSI's neck, and pulled.

Greg was too shocked to even scream. He felt the rough and scratchy material of the rope being placed against his throat, but before he could even react, his attacker started pulling, cutting off the CSI's airway. Greg began to choke. He grappled with the rope around his neck, but the attacker just chuckled and began to pull harder. He obviously liked to watch his victims suffer.

"I hate guys like you" the attacker seethed "Thinking you can take all the pretty girls, just like him" he was referring to the body of the attractive young man "Leaving us less fortunate looking people out in the cold"

That's it!? Greg thought in panic I'm going to die because this psycho has a problem with men he thinks are better looking than him talking to pretty girls!? It was a stupid reason to die, but as Greg's breathing became extremely laboured and he began to turn blue, he knew he was probably going to die anyway, no matter how pointless the cause.

No, he couldn't do that to Morgan, he couldn't give up. Greg managed to loosen the impact of the rope ever so slightly, and rammed his shoulders into the man's chest, pushing the attacker up against the wall. The man let out a huff of pain, but he was determined not to relinquish his grip.

In his last bout of adrenaline Greg tried to struggle more, but he could feel his body going weak. This was it. I'm so sorry, Morgan he thought with despair I'm so, so sorry.

Morgan reached the truck and grabbed her spare memory card. She was eager to get back to Greg, feeling guilty for leaving him, but she was side-tracked when a car pulled over and asked for some directions. After helping the lost woman, Morgan jogged back to the alley, and then steadied into a walk just before she rounded the corner, she didn't want Greg to know just how keen she was.

What Morgan was met by though when she re-entered the alley filled her with fear and anger. She could make out Greg struggling with a dark figure, who appeared to have something around Greg's throat. Morgan wasn't sure whether it was terror or anger which was making her shake the most, as she pulled out her gun and started running to Greg's aid.

"LVPD! let him go now!" Morgan yelled assertively as got nearer "Let him go or I shoot!" but the man was not listening to her, he was taking too much pleasure in watching Greg die, and that just made Morgan madder.

"You don't want him Blondie!" the man laughed "give me a go!"

"Not a chance in hell" Morgan snarled, and she pulled the trigger. She hit the man right in the side of his head.

The attacker didn't even scream, he just fell, dead on impact, bringing the rope with him. Greg stumbled forward, and then much to Morgan's horror, he fell too.

"Greg!" Morgan exclaimed as she hurried over to her friend…no, he was more than that.

"I…I'm…f-fine" Greg finally managed to get out through heavy breaths. His throat still felt restricted and he was already beginning to develop a nasty bruise. He coughed harshly and winced.

Morgan looked at him with sad eyes "C'mon, I'm taking you to the hospital" she said, helping the male CSI to his feet. She called for backup to take care of the scene, and then led Greg over to the truck "That's it, just breathe" she said soothingly, rubbing his back.

"I-it…hurts" Greg said with tears in his eyes. He sounded like a lost boy and it broke Morgan's heart.

"I know, but don't worry, the doctors will help you" she said, helping Greg into the car, and then setting off.

Greg rest his head back against the seat "Thank…you." he breathed "Saved…me"

"No problem, like I said, I got your back" Morgan said with a small smile, but then she felt guilty "I'm so sorry I left you, or didn't get there sooner…"

"Not…your…fault" Greg replied, and looked at her with a small smile. He then decided to make the bold move of placing a hand on her knee, and was pleased when Morgan just gave him a smile.

And then Greg realised something. Twice he had he almost died in an alley at night, twice he had believed it was the end. But tonight, Morgan had saved him, she was his guardian angel, and after yet another near death experience at the hands of those lurking in an alley, Greg realised he had to live in the moment and tell Morgan how he truly felt.

"Morgan…I…I was wondering…you'd…date…with me" Greg managed to splutter out. "Liked you…ever since…laid eyes on you…coward for not…saying earlier"

"Ssh, sweetie save your breath" Morgan encouraged as she saw the pain talking was causing Greg, but she was awfully flattered it was just so he could tell her how he felt. "But yes, I would love to go on a date with you" she said with a smile.

Greg smiled back. The relief he'd felt after the rope left his neck felt good, but the relief of receiving that answer felt even better.

"So, you were nearly killed because you were too good looking?" Morgan said with a smirk.

"Why so…surprised?" Greg joked and Morgan laughed. She loved how he still had a sense of humour given the situation.

"Did I say I was?" Morgan said with pout, and then Greg tried to laugh but coughed instead. "Just relax sweetie, we're almost there"

Greg smiled at her tiredly, he loved how caring Morgan was, and he couldn't wait to be with her for what he hoped would be the rest of his life.
