"It was Vlad!" Danny blurted as soon he had managed to catch up with his friends. He felt the students around him giving him strange stares, but ignored them.
"What?" Sam asked.
"It was Vlad," Danny said again, but this time much slower and quieter. "Vlad was the one who made the plane crash!"
"I feel like we should have seen this coming..." Tucker mumbled.
Ignoring Tucker, Danny said, "It's all my fault."
Sam rolled her eyes, "No it isn't."
"Yes it is," he sighed. "The fruitloop even put his DALV logo right on the plane! It's not like he was trying to hide the fact he was up to something," Danny said glumly.
Sam was hit with a realization. "Of course! Vlad was the anonymous donor Mr. Lancer said paid for our trip!" The two boys in front of Sam looked confused. "You guys really should pay attention in class more," she told them with an eye roll. "Mr. Lancer said there was a donor who paid for our trip, but only enough for one class, our class!"
The trio sat down on the sand once they reached the sleeping area. "I feel so stupid!" Danny said as he ran his hand through his hair.
"Don't be so down on yourself, man," Tucker said. "Me and Sam didn't think anything was fishy either."
"Manson, I believe you belong on the girls' side of the sleeping area," a voice said from behind the trio, making all three jump in surprise.
"Yes, Mr. Lancer," she mumbled. She started to walk over to where the girls were beginning to settle down for the night. She turned back to Tucker and Danny, "We'll talk more about...'DALV' tomorrow."
Under the simmering afternoon sun, Mr. Lancer's English class lounged around the beach.
Lancer appeared to have no plans for teaching or exploring for the day. Instead, he sat on a rock with a thick book in his hands. Although his mind seemed to be somewhere else since he had not turned a page for almost fifteen minutes. As some students laid in the sun, others were enjoying themselves in the water. Tucker, Sam, and Danny sat in the shade, away from any eavesdroppers.
"Vlad's a dead man," Danny growled.
"I'm gonna give him a taste of my mind, too! I don't even remember the last time I ate!" grumbled Tucker. "Those plants are actually looking tasty right now..." the boy gazed hungrily at some nearby vegetation then fell back to the sand in frustration.
"Okay, so we all want our revenge on Vlad," Sam said. "Can we just get to the part where we plan how to kick his butt?"
Danny dragged his fingers through his hair. "We don't even know if he's here. I bet he's at his mansion laughing at our misery." A look a disgust flashed across Danny's face. "Or worse, he's in Amity trying to flirt with my mom."
Tucker prompt himself up on his elbows. "I don't know. If Vlad is going through all this effort to make you miserable, I think he'd wanna watch the whole show," Tucker said. Danny and Sam looked at him to continue. "He's either here or at the very least has cameras watching us," Tucker shrugged.
His friends nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that does sound like him," Danny said.
"That still doesn't help us figure out what to do though. Or tell us what his plan is," Sam sighed.
"I'll do what I always do," Danny said. "Talk to the ghosts til the tell us exactly what their plans are," he shrugged.
Tucker nodded. "We need to get your ghost weapons back so we can actually help you fight."
"Good thinking," the halfa said. "I think they're still over at the other camp. I'll be right back." After a glance around the beach, Danny disappeared.
Not a minute after Danny had vanished, Lancer stood up and began calling the class over. The students reluctantly walked over to their teacher.
The teacher cleared his throat. "After a lot of thinking, I've decided that I'm going to go search for Valerie and anybody who wishes to help may come. Anybody who would like to wait here will stay with the others." His eyes roamed from face to face. "Would anyone like to come with me?"
There was a long stretch of silence as people glanced warily at their friends.
"We will," Sam said as she raised her hand.
Tucker groaned and unenthusiastically raised his as well.
Lancer looked in confusion at Sam and Tucker. "Where's Fenton?"
"Bathroom. He'll come too," Tucker said nonchalantly.
The teacher didn't question it and looked back to the others.
"Oh, we will too!" Paulina said as she quickly brought her hand up. She threw a glare at her friends. "Raise your hands!" she snapped. "The ghost boy's out there."
"Yeah, and other ghosts that are probably evil and crazy!" Dash countered.
The Latina continued to scowl. Dash begrudgingly gave in and raised his hand in defeat. Kwan, Star, and several other A-listers raised their hands in suit.
Nathan also raised his hand. Mikey and their friend, Todd, gave him bewildered looks. "It's for Valerie," he said with his chest puffed.
Mikey made an annoyed face but lifted his hand in the air, as did Todd. Nathan smiled in glee.
"Okay, everyone else can grab their stuff and go over with the others," Lancer instructed.
The people staying gathered up their things while the others stood around for further orders from their teacher. During this time Danny emerged from the woods and walked over to Tucker and Sam.
"I put everything in my duffel bag," he said.
"Perfect. We're gonna need it," Tucker replied.
Danny looked around in confusion. "What's going on?"
"We're going out in a search party to look for Valerie," Sam said.
"Oh great. The fruit loop's no doubt gonna make this fun," Danny said sarcastically. A look of realization crossed his face. "Vlad must have Valerie!"
"If he does then she's probably better off than us. After all, isn't she his favorite puppet?" Sam asked.
Danny shook his head. "No, well yeah," he corrected. "But Valerie found out that he's half ghost," he explained.
"What?" his friends shouted, earning a few questionable looks.
"Yeah, forgot to mention that," Danny said with a weak smile. "I don't know how she figured it out. But that's gotta be why she's missing."
"Well, I doubt he took her off the island," Tucker said. "We'll just have to find where he'd be able to keep her."
"Alright people! Last call for anyone who wants to stay," Lancer said to the small group of students. When everybody remained in place he continued. "Okay, let's find Miss Gray."
The trio exchanged worried looks, but followed their teacher back into the woods.
"Maybe we should call for Phantom," Mikey timidly suggested after about an hour of walking in relative silence. "We know he's here."
"I think we should too!" Paulina called from the back as she rapidly tried to comb her hair with her fingers.
"Please don't," Danny mumbled.
Lancer cautiously looked up into the sky. "I don't-"
"He hasn't helped us yet, why would he now?" Billy asked Paulina.
Danny blushed and ducked his head while Sam and Tucker gave him sympathetic looks.
Paulina looked furious. "He's probably busy," she said.
"Busy doing what?" Billy stretched out his arms, gesturing to the woods around them. "Why's he even here in the first place? Clearly not to help us."
"Maybe he went back to Amity to get help," Kwan suggested.
"My dad always says that Phantom's actually an evil ghost," Christie said, receiving several glares from her friends. She shyly continued on. "He says that Phantom just acts like the good guy and someday he's gonna turn on all of us. Maybe he's helping the other ghosts that keep attacking us."
Paulina openly gaped at her friend. "How could you think that? He risks his life for us everyday!"
"He's dead, Paulina," Billy reminded her. Paulina crossed her arms in response.
"Phantom's a cool dude," Dash said. "I think I know him the best since he and I got shrunk down for a whole day," he bragged, to the eyeroll of many who had heard the story countless times before. "He's not evil."
"Nonetheless," Lancer broke in. "I'm not sure if calling Mr. Phantom would be wise. We don't want to attract any unwanted attention," he told his students. "Although, I would like to know why all of you weren't this engaged in our debate about Romeo and Juliet," he added. He examined his students, who looked bored at the mere mention at the topic. "Perhaps our next debate can be about Phantom? Just so you can practice."
Immediately he received smiles and nods in approval, until they turned to looks of horror. "What?" he asked. Lester pointed behind him. The teacher turned to see an oversized, glowing wolf just a short distance away. It faced away from them, busy trying to get something in the shrubbery.
Lancer turned back to his students. He motioned them to be silent and waved them to move in the opposite direction. The teens instantly turned and ran for their lives. The cracking of sticks and leaves caught the wolf's attention. With a sharp bark the ghost was in front of them.
With terrified screams the class bolted in a separate direction, but a bear stood on his hindquarters with four arms outstretched stopped the class in their tracks. In another direction a rabid looking, two-headed beaver restricted the students and teacher from moving.
"Phantom!" Paulina screamed. She received a couple glares. "What? The ghosts already found us," she said as she gestured to the animals. "Phantom! Help!" She was joined by a few others.
When the ghosts started to get closer and there was still no sign of the ghost boy, Dash grabbed Danny by the arm. "Fenton, you know how to fight ghosts!" he frantically said.
"What? No, Dash I-" Danny tried to say, but he was cut off when he was shoved in front of the wolf ghost.
"Take him!" another jock yelled. Danny glared at the football players who had pushed him towards his possible death.
He slowly turned back to examine the wolf and the other two ghosts who were creeping up towards him. "Good doggy...and friends," Danny said with a strained smile as he put his hands out in a nonthreatening manner. He instantly recognized them as a few of the mutated animals that Vlad had used against his mom and himself in Colorado.
The ferocious ghost animals growled and snarled. Lancer stepped up to be with Danny as the rest of the class took a couple steps back. The teacher placed a shaky hand on Danny's shoulder and stepped in front of the teen to protect him. Lancer put up two trembling fists, ready to fight. Danny almost laughed, Lancer wouldn't stand a chance against these ghosts.
"It's okay, my parents taught me how to fight ghosts," he said to reassure his teacher. Sam and Tucker ran up next to Danny with Fenton weapons in their hands. Tucker passed Danny one.
"We got your back, dude," he said, giving his best friend a smile.
The oversized wolf pounced first. Sam expertly shot it square in the chest. "I'm normally against shooting animals, but I'll make an exception this time," she said. The wolf fell backwards to the ground with a yelp.
The two-headed beaver went after Mr. Lancer. It dove towards one of his legs and started biting and scratching it. The teacher cried out in pain, Tucker immediately shot it with his gun. Unfortunately, that just made the beavers angry at Tucker. It charged at the boy, with all four of its angry, red eyes shining. Before it reached him, it was caught in the Fenton thermos's vortex by Danny.
"Manson, behind you!" Lancer shouted to the girl.
Danny saw it before she had a chance to turn around. He attempted to shoot the ghost in back of her, but due to his lack of experience with a gun he missed. The shots went zooming passed the wolf's head.
Sam turned just in time to have the wolf lunge on top of her and pin her down by the shoulders. The class gasped in horror, even Paulina. Tucker made an attempt to shoot it, but the ghost bear slashed the gun out of his hands. It stood up on its hind legs and grabbed Tucker. "Tuck!" Danny called.
"Get Sam, I got this!" Tucker shouted reassuringly. He reached into his pocket and grabbed the Fenton lipstick. Danny nodded and ran over to Sam.
"Hey Fido!" Danny yelled to the wolf. The wolf was still inches from Sam's face when it looked at Danny and growled. "Down boy! You don't wanna eat that. It's a vegetarian!" he quipped and took a shot at it. The teen yelped in surprise when the ghost was suddenly in front of him. The wolf seized his gun and shook it like a chew toy. When it had finished the animal looked at Danny and licked its lips. "Uh...bad dog?" he said sheepishly.
The animal lunged at Danny. Danny prepared for the worse, until he remembered that the class already knew he could go intangible. The wolf sailed through the boy. The class gasped. "Seriously? It's not like they didn't know," Danny mumbled in irritation. The wolf looked confused, but recovered quickly. It snarled at Danny and pinned him to the ground. The halfa grimaced as the wolf's claws dug into his skin.
"Alright, time to really show off," Danny said under his breath as he glanced at his classmates nervously. He turned intangible and sank into the ground. He heard gasps of shock again, only this time louder. He appeared behind the wolf, who was still looking at his paws in bewilderment.
Danny glanced in the direction of two friends, he saw Tucker slip out of the bear's grip, and Sam finish off the job by sucking it up in the thermos. Lancer was gripping his leg in pain, and was looking from Tucker and Sam to Danny with his mouth hanging open. "Daniel, watch out!" the teacher cried out and pointed to the wolf.
Danny turned in time to see the wolf clamp harshly onto his arm. It shook with just as much force as it used on the gun. The boy screamed in agony. As a reaction, he reached his arm back and created an ectoplasmic ball. Danny shot it at the ghost, and the animal gave a whine and backed down. Sam, who still had the thermos in hand, sucked the ghost up quickly. Danny grabbed his arm and hissed in pain at the fresh, bleeding wound. He looked up at Sam to mumble thanks, but stopped short when she saw a shocked expression mixed with worry on her face.
Danny's face paled as he remembered the stunt he had just pulled. Not only did he basically prove that he had perfect control of his intangibility, he had also created an ectoblast. Which made him that much more less human and more of a freak. He nervously turned to look at the faces of his shocked classmates.
