SandieBrody who gave a prompt about Greg getting hit by a car.

Summary – Nick and Sara are worried when Greg doesn't turn up for work, and then a hit and run is reported with the victim fitting Greg's description…

Broken

Greg was in a foul mood; a very unusual mood for him. His car had broken down as he was leaving for work, so now he'd had to walk and was nearly half an hour late. Grissom said he was going to let Greg into the felid tonight, making the young man very excited, but now he may have missed the opportunity due to the delay.

He was just over halfway when his phone started ringing. Greg sighed as he pulled out the device and saw it was Nick. Great, I'm in trouble the young man thought as he answered.

"So, exactly how pissed off is Grissom?" Greg asked.

"Very" Nick replied. Greg pinched the bridge of his nose in despair "He offered you the chance to go into the field which you've been desperately begging for, and you haven't even shown up yet!"

"It's not my fault!" Greg snapped back; he seriously wasn't in the mood for a lecture "My car broke down…"

"Whatever" Nick said, not prepared to deal with the younger man's attitude "Just get here, or else Grissom will probably never ask you again" and with that, the older CSI hung up.

Greg growled in frustration and angrily shoved the phone back into his pocket. The lab tech had not realised that whilst he'd been talking, he'd stepped out into the middle of the road. Greg was so pent up with frustration and cursing under his breath, he didn't even realise where he was.

That was until the screeching sound took Greg by surprise. The young man whipped around, immediately shielding his eyes from the oncoming lights. The car beeped for him to get out the way, but Greg was frozen to the spot he was so scared. And then it happened.

Greg felt his feet leave the ground as the car ploughed into him, and the young man flew through the air, before smacking into the road, hard. Whoever hit him didn't even stop to make sure Greg was alright. The tyres just continued to screech as the car tore around the corner, leaving Greg broken and vulnerable in the middle of the road.

The young CSI was breathing heavily as he tried push himself off the ground, but he just ended up screaming in pain. It was late at night in the dodgy neighbourhood, so there was no one there to help him. Greg reached for his phone, but found it had been smashed to pieces during the fall. Tears of fear and pain started to fall from the young man's eyes.

Greg's head was bleeding from hitting the ground, and he could feel cuts and bruises starting to form over all over his body. But none of that stuff mattered to him now, they were just minor setbacks compared to the other problem. Greg couldn't feel his legs.

Knowing he couldn't stay in the middle of the road in case another car came along – and probably run him over again in a neighbourhood like this – Greg slowly and painfully started to drag himself to the side of the street. The young man gritted his teeth and tried to bite back the pain which was radiating all over his body as he used his elbows and arms to shuffle over to the sidewalk, but every so often the pain would get too much, and Greg would let a cry elicit from his dry lips.

After what seemed like an eternity, Greg managed to pull himself into a side alley, and slowly prop himself so he was sat with his back against the wall of a building. The young man sat with his eyes squeezed shut, taking heavy breaths to get through the pain. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't feel his legs…paralyzed…he could be paralyzed….Greg could do nothing other than sit and continue to cry to himself helplessly as he prayed someone would find him.

Nick and Sara had ended up going to the crime scene after Grissom told them not to wait around for Greg anymore. Nick had been extremely annoyed at the young man for snapping at him earlier, and Sara seemed silently concerned; even if Greg did have to walk to work, surely he wouldn't be this late…

Once they'd reached the crime scene and done their initial processing Sara tried to call Greg, but it wouldn't even ring. She then called the lab, and was told Greg still hadn't showed up. Putting her phone back, the female CSI bit her bottom lip nervously.

"Would you stop worrying about him?" Nick said as he noticed Sara was distracted again "I'm sure he's just off sulking somewhere…"

"Does that really sound like Greg to you?" Sara asked with a raised eyebrow. Nick didn't respond, and Sara took this as a sign that he was secretly worried too. "What if something bad has happened to him, Nick?"

"It hasn't" Nick said sternly "You can't think like that" he was deeply concerned, and chose denial as his tactic to deal with the emotion. If Greg was in trouble, and the last thing Nick had done was argue with him…

"Look, If he hasn't turned up by the end of the night, then I wanna put out a missing person's" Sara said firmly, and Nick just nodded not wanting to argue with her.

The two CSIs continued to work as best as they could, but both of their minds were dominated by the thought of Greg scared and alone somewhere, even thought there was lack of evidence to prove that as yet. Soon, Brass came over to talk to Nick and Sara, and he looked deeply concerned, and if Brass looked that way, then it had to be bad news.

"Do either of you know if Greg has turned up yet?" Brass asked.

"No, he hasn't as far as we know" replied Nick.

Brass sighed, any sign of hoping leaving him. Nick and Sara shared a look of worry before giving the police captain their immediate attention.

"Someone called a few minutes ago to confess to a hit and run….the guy he hit…it fit Greg's description." Brass said regrettably, and both Nick and Sara's heart sank as their eyes grew wide "But there's no way of knowing for sure it's Greg" the officer added, trying to stay optimistic.

"Well we have to check; we have to go see him!" Sara exclaimed, the fear imminent in his voice.

"Where'd it happen?" Nick asked impatiently.

Brass gave the CSIs the name of the road, and realising it was literally a few blocks away, Nick and Sara dashed to the car to leave, but not before Sara told Brass to make sure an ambulance was on the way. There was a scared silence as Nick hastily drove them through the rundown streets. Neither CSI wanted to believe the man who'd been ploughed down was Greg, their friend, but it all seemed so coincidental.

Nick had barely stopped the car before Sara was jumping out of it. She paused in the middle of the street as she saw the pool of and the shattered remains of a phone…Greg's phone. Sara clasped a shaky hand over her mouth, she felt sick; where the hell was Greg? Nick ran up behind her and felt his heart beating even more furiously against his chest as he saw the evidence – this couldn't be happening.

"Greg!" The Texan called as Sara was still in shock. "Greg, where are you!?"

"N-Nick?" a weak voice responded not too far away "N-Nick, help me…" the voice trailed off, and Nick and Sara ran over to the alley to find the heart wrenching sight.

There, sat battered and broken, was Greg.

Greg was about to lose all hope, he was about to let the pain come and take him away, but then he'd heard Nick's voice calling for him and he'd thought it was a dream, a dream that his friend had come to save him. But he'd called back, just to make sure, and then Sara and Nick had appeared; they were real and Greg could have cried with joy if it weren't for the tears of pain already in his eye.

"Nick…Sara" the young man said sounding so lost and vulnerable, before he burst out into sobs.

Sara immediately dropped to his side, her hands cautiously hovering over Greg's body as she didn't want to hurt him anymore, but then the young man wrapped his arms around Sara's waist and buried his head in her shoulder.

"Ssh, you're going to be okay, I promise" the female CSI soothed as she stroked the back of Greg's hair. "The ambulance is on its way"

"I-I can't…" Greg trembled "I can't feel my legs" he finally whispered and then started to cry harder.

"Hey, you need to calm down, Greggo" Nick joined them now after overcoming the initial shock of seeing his friend like this. "Everything's going to be alright, the doctors will fix you up" he was trying reassure himself too, because he knew if Greg wouldn't be able to walk again, it would ruin the young man's life.

"Ni-Nick, I'm s-sorry I snapped a-at you e-earlier" Greg said as he turned his head on Sara's shoulder to look at the older man.

"Don't worry about that now, dude" Nick said with a small smile "I'm sorry I snapped too. Let's just call it quits" Greg nodded, and then buried his face back into Sara's shoulder.

Not long after, the ambulance arrived. Nick and Sara were reluctantly pushed to the side and told which hospital Greg was going to so they could follow. Greg was given some morphine to deal with the pain, and the young CSI soon found it hard to fight his eyes fluttering closed. So, Greg just let the sea of calm wash over him, but he was scared what he'd be told when he woke up.

When Greg started to come around again, he found that he was no longer in pain, but he still couldn't feel his legs either. Rather regrettably, the young man slowly allowed his eyes to flicker open and he found himself in the familiar white place.

"Nick, he's waking up" Greg heard Sara say excitedly, and then felt a light squeeze to his hand.

"C'mon, G" Nick encouraged as he sat by Greg's other side.

"Wh-What…" Greg started, but then coughed from the dryness in his throat. Nick helped him sit up and Sara gave him some water "Thanks" Greg smiled and then drank some of the precious liquid.

"Doc said you're going to be okay" Nick said with a small smile "Paralysis in your legs is only temporary"

"Really?" Greg asked in disbelief; if that was true, he was one lucky guy.

"Yep" Sara said running a hand down his arm "It'll take a few months of hard physical therapy, but we know you've got it in you to make it" she smiled.

"Thanks, you guys" Greg said "For finding me, and I know I can do it with your support"

"Anytime, G" Nick said "Still no luck tracking down the bastard who did this to you though. They made the call at a payphone." He seemed angry all of a sudden; he wanted to bring Greg justice, but they couldn't.

"It's okay, It was my fault anyway" Greg said "I didn't watch where I was going"

"He still drove off and left you though, Greg" Sara said sadly; she didn't want the younger man blaming himself.

"Oh well…you think I could use the sympathy card with Grissom to let me out on the field when I can walk again?" Greg asked with a cheeky grin. Nick and Sara just laughed.

"I dunno" Sara said.

"It's nice to see you're already scheming away again" Nick smiled and Greg smiled back.

He knew he'd be okay.
