Chapter 45

EPOV

I kicked at a loose stone at the bottom of the tree and sighed heavily.

God what a mess I'd gotten myself into this time. If I was to go by the look of anger on James' face, I'd say he pretty much wasn't happy about the fact that Bella knew about the little scene in the club.

Well wasn't this just poetic justice?

I snorted to myself as I put my head back against the trunk of the tree.

I was falling in love with this tree, I'd be sad when I left.

Here I was falling for a guy, who not only thought I was a man-whore, but he just happened to be in a relationship.

Just my fucking luck.

The leaves above me played together as the wind blew softly through them and I closed my eyes. In a few months Bella would have her baby, and I'd start looking for my own place. There was no way I was gonna sponge off of the McCarty's anymore. I had already started looking for apartments, but I didn't mention it to Bella because I knew she would kick up a storm.

Maybe I should just focus on that aspect of my life and not try to get romantically involved with anyone at this present moment.

Amazingly I'd never thought about having an actual relationship with someone until James.

Alec was just a fling, even though he had wanted it to be so much more. I wasn't ready for the responsibility of having to look out for someone else other than myself and let's be real, Alec was as clingy as a fucking baby monkey. Don't get me wrong, he was nice enough, a sweet kid, but that was just it. He was a kid. Barely had his foot in the door of college, there was no way he was ready for a honest to God 'serious' relationship.

I sighed again as the cool breeze blew over me, and the little bit of sunlight we were having today warmed my face. I must have dozed off because the next time I opened my eyes, I was staring into James' beautiful pair.

He cleared his throat, "Hey."

I must've been sleeping longer than I thought, because when I replied my voice was heavy with sleep. "Hey."

Did he just shiver?

Dear God.

Sex on a fucking stick.

That's what his voice sounded like when he replied to my greeting.

It should be illegal for someone to be so gosh damned sexy. His hair, the infamous bed hair, looked perfectly tousled and his face was pink from the cool winds blowing. His eyes were heavy with sleep and had that come hither look going on.

Was it wrong I wanted to jump him right there and then?

Probably. I did kinda sorta had a boyfriend.

That made me think, I had to have a serious talk with Al.

The past few weeks and the culmination at the club made me realize something; I was not ready to be in a monogamous relationship with anyone.

Well at least if he wasn't Edward Masen.

Seriously.

My brain needed to stop throwing thoughts like that at me.

"Are you ok?" I asked breaking the silence.

"Are you?" he asked, his voice returning to its normal timber.

I grinned, "Didn't your mama ever teach you not to answer a question with another one?"

"I believe she said that at some point in my upbringing," he replied, giving me that crooked grin that I was sure made many a heart skip a beat, male and female alike.

"I'm sorry about Bella," he said with a groan, rubbing his hand over his face.

I chuckled, "I don't think we can ever apologize for Bella."

He laughed, "You're right."

"So..." I said trailing off, not really knowing how to breach the subject of the elephant in the room.

"I just needed to tell someone about...and well Bella's my bestfriend so she seemed like the perfect candidate to tell," he said quietly lowering his gaze.

I smiled and sat beside him, our shoulders brushing as I leaned back against the tree, "It's ok. I understand, I told Emmett."

"The two of them are a pair aren't they?" he asked with another laugh.

I nodded, "What happened at the club..." I started.

"You don't have to explain, it was the heat of the moment," he said interrupted me.

Typical. He didn't want to deal with it. That made me angry.

"Would you shut the fuck up for once?" I snapped.

His head snapped around to face me and his eyes were wide with surprise.

Yeah, bucko, I'm in charge here.

"What happened was strange as hell," I said. "But it made me think."

He leaned back, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed, "Please don't say it."

"Say what?" I asked looking down at our bent knees.

"You know what you're going to say," he said turning his head letting his eyes bore into mine.

I think I fucking shivered again.

Traitorous body.

He was right though, I wouldn't say it aloud. I wouldn't give voice to my rambling thoughts.

"So what are we going to do?" I asked softly.

"We're going to wing it," he said a smile crossing his features.

That sounded like a good plan actually, "Okay."

And then I began to sink further into the ocean that was him; we sat there and talked for what seemed like hours.

Talked about what?

Everything.

I really had to talk to Al.

Sooner rather than later.
