A/N: Hey guys! Thanks so much for reviews :) If I could get over 600 reviews this time round I would be freakin' ecstatic XD This story is for elenp3 who asked for Greg protecting Morgan from being shot. A bit o' drama mixed with a bit o' fluff, enjoy!
Summary – Greg and Morgan were worried about working a crime scene in a burnt down house, but really it was the man in the wardrobe they should have be worried about…
You Owe Me
The floorboards of the rickety old house creaked as Morgan and Greg delicately walked across. The CSIs were there to investigate an arson attack, and although the building had been deemed safe despite being practically nothing but a frame, Morgan and Greg still had their doubts.
"So, you wanna take upstairs or down?" Morgan asked as they scanned what use to be the lounge, nothing but ash and scorched furniture remained.
"Mmm…I'll take down" Greg told her "Most of the damage is here, and I still owe you one, right?" he said with a small smile.
"Of course" Morgan smiled back "and I was just going to suggest the same thing!" she grinned mischievously, and Greg rolled his eyes with a smirk. "Have fun!" Morgan said brightly before heading over to the stairs.
"I'm sure I will" Greg called over sarcastically and Morgan laughed.
Morgan didn't at all like the groaning noise the staircase made beneath her feet, but she would soon find that a collapsing building would be the least of her worries.
After stepping onto the landing, the CSI headed to the first door on the left, not daring to go much further. The room contained the frame of what Morgan assumed used to be a bed, as well as charred curtains and a stale smouldering smell. The only thing which appeared to have remained intact was a wardrobe next to the door. Morgan walked inside and placed her kit on the ground before heading over the window.
There was a sudden creak behind Morgan, but she put it down to the unstable house just making noises of its own. However, only moments later the floorboards let out a low whine and Morgan whipped around, startled.
The CSI's eyes widened in horror as she was met by the barrel of a gun being pointed in her face; the man must have been hiding in the wardrobe.
"Put your hands above your head" the man spoke in a gruff voice "don't move, don't call for help, or else I'll kill you right here, right now" there was not even a single waver in the stranger's voice to suggest he wasn't being serious.
Morgan couldn't think what to do other than follow the man's commands and raised her shaking hands above her head. She could only hope to somehow warn Greg, or for him to get help.
Greg coughed once more as the speckles of debris still tickled at the back of his throat – the sooner they got out of there the better. Having not heard from Morgan for a while, and knowing the building still wasn't a hundred per cent safe, Greg started to get a little concerned and so decided to head upstairs and go check on the female CSI.
Greg was about to call Morgan's name, but when he came to the doorframe he was both terrified and enraged by the scene, as a terrified looking Morgan was held at gunpoint by a burly looking man. Morgan's eyes flicked over to look at Greg for a second, but he placed a finger to his lips to tell her to be quiet. Morgan discreetly blinked her left eye to show she had understood and went back to looking at the man.
"What do you want?" she asked with a shaky voice, trying to buy Greg some time.
"What I want is for you damn CSIs to stop meddling in my business!" the man replied angrily "and that ain't going to happen unless I stop you myself"
By this point, Greg was only a few feet behind the man – today of all days had to be the one where he didn't have a gun of his own. Suddenly, the CSI took one last step forward, and the floorboard beneath him let out a familiar groan.
The gunman turned round, and highly disconcerted by Greg's sudden appearance, Greg managed to gain the upper hand as he jumped on the stranger and pushed him to the floor.
"Morgan, get out of here!" Greg said as the man struggled beneath him – he still had the gun.
Morgan didn't move though, firstly she was still in shock, but secondly there was no way she wanted to leave Greg with this psychopath. The man kicked Greg in the chest and the CSI fell back with a hiss of pain.
"C'mere, Blondie" the gunman said reaching to grab Morgan's ankle and then pulling her to the ground.
Morgan screamed as she tried to kick the man away, but Greg soon grabbed hold of the gunman and pulled him off Morgan, spinning him around. What happened next, the CSIs weren't aware if it was because the man was startled or because of malicious intent. There was a sickening crack as a gunshot rang through the room, and Greg fell back to the floor with a cry of pain.
"Greg!" Morgan cried as she scrambled to her feet.
The CSI was on his back and moaning with agony as he placed his hands over the bullet wound in his upper thigh. Morgan grew angry now, how dare this bastard hurt Greg, Greg who had only been trying to save her.
Blinded by hate for the gunman, Morgan swiftly kicked him square in the chest, causing the man to recoil in pain and Morgan took the opportunity to take the gun, and used the butt to hit the man on the side of the head – he was knocked out cold.
Morgan didn't even take the time to acknowledge what she'd done as she immediately hurried to Greg's side.
"You know when I said that I owed you, this isn't exactly what I had in mind" Greg tried to joke, but then cringed in pain and clutched his bleeding leg.
Morgan smiled a little sadly; it always amazed her how Greg could find a sense of humour in this type of situation.
"Me either" she replied as she studied Greg's wound "I don't think you've got a nicked artery, but we need to get you to the hospital" she said much to Greg's dismay.
After that, Morgan called for backup to take care of the gunman and an ambulance for Greg.
"Thanks for saving me" Morgan said to Greg once she got off the phone and was applying pressure to his wound.
"Don't mention it, you saved me too" Greg replied, and tried to smile, but the pain was still overbearing.
Back up and the ambulance soon arrived, and much to Greg and Morgan's relief they were told that Greg was going to be fine – a minor surgery and a few stiches was all that would be needed, however walking around for too long may be painful for a while.
Therefore, when they suggested Greg should stay with someone when he left the hospital, Morgan happily agreed – it was the least she could do for the brave and caring man who had risked his life just for her.
Greg was very annoyed at the fact he'd been ordered to stay in a wheel chair on his first day out of hospital. He didn't like to be a burden on anybody, and consequently insisted that there was no need for Morgan to stay with him – Greg didn't want her to see him as weak or put her out of her way. After voicing this concern, Morgan insisted there was no need for him to be so paranoid, and that she was happy to help.
"It's the least I can do" she said as she pushed Greg's wheel chair into his apartment "You saved my life…so I guess that makes us uneven, so I owe you, besides, I think It'll be great spending extra time with you" she said with a sweet smile.
"Well…okay" Greg said still feeling a little hesitant "But if you want to leave at any time…"
"I won't" Morgan assured him as she stopped the wheelchair beside Greg's sofa "your couch is pretty comfy for sleeping on" she teased as she flopped down onto it.
"How about my bed?" Greg suggested before he'd thought it through, and Morgan raised an eyebrow with a smirk "Oh no! I mean, I'll sleep on the sofa, you can have my bed" Greg quickly explained himself with a blush, and Morgan started giggling.
"No, I couldn't do that" she insisted "You need some proper rest, no distractions" she added with a wink, and Greg had to look away to stop himself blushing even worse. "You need help moving onto the sofa?" Morgan asked.
"Oh, no I got it" Greg said.
"Greg you don't have to…" Morgan started; concerned Greg's pride was going to get the better of him.
"I'm fine, really" Greg said, trying to give her a reassuring smile.
Morgan gave him a slightly cautious look before picking up the remote and flicking on the TV hoping to make Greg feel less pressured if he wasn't being watched.
Greg steadied himself by placing both his hands on the arm rest of the chair and then pushing himself up, then all he had to do was slide onto the sofa, but his leg took the worst moment possible to seize up, and just as Greg was halfway across, he let out a cry of pain and fell to the floor.
"Greg!" Morgan exclaimed in shock as she immediately got down to help him. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
"Yeah, 'm fine" Greg said as tried to pull himself up using the sofa and ignoring Morgan's help "Leg just seized up" he breathed.
"Greg, stop trying to be macho man" Morgan lightly scolded him "You told me it's okay to need help sometimes, remember?"
"I knew those words would come back to bite me in the ass" Greg grumbled and Morgan laughed. "Fine, Morgan, I request your assistance, please"
"Pass" Morgan said flatly and went to sit up again; Greg looked at her incredulously "What? I'm just kidding!" she laughed and hooking her arms under Greg's shoulders, she helped him up onto the sofa "how could you ever think I'd be so heartless?" she asked innocently.
"I couldn't" Greg replied with a soft smile which Morgan returned.
"You want something to eat?" Morgan asked.
Greg scoffed "Good luck finding something in my cupboards; I still eat like a poor student"
Morgan rolled her eyes "You say that like I was thinking of cooking, I meant moving as far as the phone and ordering pizza"
Greg laughed "Sure, pizza sounds good"
Morgan smiled "Okay let's see if I remember, you like… Hawaiian, classic ham and pineapple, because it reminds you of the beaches and going surfing" she recalled proudly.
"Yeah" Greg said with a lopsided smile "I can't believe you remembered that"
"I do listen, you know" Morgan smirked before reaching for the phone.
After that, the CSIs sat watching movies together and eating pizza for the rest of the night. Eventually, Greg yawned as the medication he'd been pumped up on started to get to him. The male CSI subconsciously started to slump to his left, until his head ended up resting on Morgan's shoulder as he fell into a deep sleep.
Morgan smiled warmly at him – there was almost an innocent quality to Greg when he slept. Not having the heart to move him, Morgan turned off the TV and leaned back on the sofa, encircling her arms around Greg's back and bringing him to rest gently against her. With a sigh of content, Morgan herself soon fell asleep.
"Hey, how are you feeling this morning?" Morgan asked as Greg woke the next day. Neither CSI commented on the situation – they found nothing awkward about waking up in each other's arms.
"A lot better, actually" Greg replied "Thanks for staying and taking care of me" he smiled.
Morgan smiled back "My pleasure"
"Do you think…maybe you could stay today too, just to be sure I'm okay?" Greg asked sheepishly.
Morgan laughed lightly "I'm sure one more day won't hurt…maybe two"
I already did a story were Greg saves Morgan from being shot (see 'Shot Down') so I made this one different by cutting out the usual hospital scene and putting in some home made love ^_^ I hope this style worked!
