A/N: Hello folks! Thank you so much for the reviews, I never thought I would get this many XD The CSI hiatus carries on in the UK, so I am watching older episodes to console myself. Anyway, this story is for a Guest who asked that Greg gets suspicious of Nick and Morgan hanging out together. I hope you enjoy!
Summary – When Nick and Morgan start hanging out together, Greg finds it hard to control his jealously. Will he let his friends know how he feels?
My Best Friends
"Hey, Greg!" Nick called excitedly as he headed into the break room flourishing two pieces of card around in his hand "It's the big game tomorrow, I can't wait!"
Greg winced with embarrassment and turned to give his friend a guilty look complete with his best puppy dog eyes. Nick looked at him dejectedly and sighed; he knew where this was going.
"I'm so sorry" Greg said "but I have this triple homicide going on so I'm going to have to work tomorrow morning too"
Nick sadly looked at the tickets in his hand and then back at Greg "It's okay" he said with a meek smile "It's not your fault"
It was supposed to be a day for just the two of them to hang out; they hadn't done much outside of work together since Warrick died, and Nick was still trying his best to rekindle their brotherhood after he threatened to leave the lab not so long ago.
"I feel really bad" Greg said, knowing how much Nick had been looking forward to this; he had too. "but we'll do something next weekend, I promise" he said making the sign for 'scouts honour' with his fingers.
Nick gave him lopsided smile "Sure"
"No, way!" Morgan exclaimed in disbelief as she bounded into the room and practically snatched the tickets off Nick, studying them like they were some kind of map to opulent treasures. "How the hell did you get tickets for this game? I've been trying for months!"
"My brother knows someone" Nick shrugged "I didn't know you were into football" and then he had a thought "Do you wanna come with me?" he asked Morgan with a smile.
"Er, yeah!" Morgan yelped with excitement and hugged Nick "This is so awesome, I can't wait!"
"Me either" Nick laughed at her eagerness.
Greg meanwhile was looking slightly taken aback: Did Nick just ask Morgan on a date? No, Nick only saw Morgan like a little sister, surely… And Morgan, would she date Nick? Then Greg remembered the time Morgan asked him if he knew if Nick was single…she'd been kidding, right?
"This'll be fun, we don't get to hang out much just the two of us" Morgan remarked.
"Yeah I know, maybe we can get to know each other better" Nick smiled.
"Definitely" Morgan beamed back. "I have to go, but I'll call you later to finalize details, yeah?"
"Uh, huh" Nick nodded and the female CSI left the room with eagerness in her step.
"Hello to you too, Morgan!" Greg called after her quite sarcastically, feeling ignored by the female CSI.
Nick chuckled "Don't take it personally bro, she's just excited"
Greg looked at him a little dubiously "Yeah, now she's got a hot date" he mumbled.
Nick scoffed "This is not a date" he said waving his hand "Morgan is like my sister, and she's too young for me"
"Mmm" was Greg's cold response "Well, have a good time" he said before stalking out the room.
Nick looked after him in disbelief: what the hell is his problem?!
The next morning and Greg was sat at his desk tapping his pen up and down on the half-finished report in front of him. He looked at the clock, knowing that the game would be well underway now and Nick and Morgan would be there…together…with no one else.
Greg sighed, frustrated with himself for being so bothered about this. Nick and Morgan should be able to hang out together with no strings attached, and he was thinking like a jealous child.
"Hey, Mister Grumpy" Finlay teased as she entered the room, but her mockery soon subsided when she saw Greg looking genuinely troubled by something. "What's up?" she asked, taking a seat in front of Greg's desk.
"It's nothing" Greg said waving a hand of dismissal, but Finn just raised an eyebrow at him. "Okay" he conceded "I know it sounds petty but…Nick and Morgan are out together and I keep wondering what would happen if it turned into something more" he looked down at the pen twizzling around in his hand "because I really…I really like Morgan" he confessed.
Finn just smiled "I know" she shrugged, and Greg looked at her surprised. "We all know" she smirked "Including Nick. He's your best friend, and he knows you like Morgan, which is why he wouldn't try anything" Finn tried to reassure the younger man.
"Yeah, I guess" Greg said with a wobbly smile "But Morgan doesn't know I like her, so what if she falls for Nick or something?"
Finn bit her lip thoughtfully; she remembered asking Morgan is she was seeing anyone, and when she asked if it was Nick, the way Morgan had said no was somewhat wistful and distant – maybe there was a little concern for Greg.
"Well, if Morgan confided in you that she liked Nick, then what would you say?" Finn countered.
"Then I'd probably tell her to ask him out" Greg said, if not a little reluctantly "If Nick would make her happy, then that's what she should do"
Finn smiled "Then you truly are their best friend" she declared "and best friends don't hurt each other" Greg was about to question further exactly what she meant by that, but suddenly Finn's phone beeped "Sorry, I gotta go" she said looking at her phone "But I'll be here later if you need to talk" she smiled.
"Thanks" Greg smiled back, and after Finn left he went back to his report; I'm just being stupid.
Later on in the evening Greg was finally able to go home, and just as he was leaving the lab he bumped into Nick and Morgan coming in for their shift. The pair were laughing about something as Morgan shoved Nick's shoulder in a playful way. Greg felt the sudden pang of jealousy return to his stomach, but he pushed it aside and smiled the best he could.
"Hey!" Nick greeted him.
"You finally heading home?" Morgan asked.
"Yup" Greg nodded "Did you guys have a good time today?" he asked.
"It was awesome" Nick grinned and Morgan nodded in agreement "The team we wanted to win did, beer was flowing, and we got chance to finally just talk. Oh, and Morgan can eat a lot for a skinny chick" he teased.
"It's a skill I'm proud of" Morgan said innocently.
Greg feigned a laugh "Well I'm glad for you guys" he said "did you want to go and have drinks tomorrow or something?" he asked.
"Actually… we're going out for dinner tomorrow" Nick said with the same guilty look Greg had given him earlier.
Greg felt his heart plummet a bit.
"Yeah, I got two coupons for this new Thai place and I wanted to take Nick to say thanks for today" Morgan explained. "Rain check, though" she added as she observed Greg's disheartened look.
"Sure, rain check" Greg said with a weak smile before brushing past them.
Nick and Morgan shared a slight look of confusion and concern before heading into the lab.
Dinner…Greg mused as he went into work on Monday evening, the night after Nick and Morgan went out together for the second time. Dinner just screams date… intimate, wine, talk, dressed up, going back to the apartment; he shook his head at the thought.
"Greg?" the CSI turned from his locker to find Nick looking a little worried "I need to talk to you" the Texan claimed.
"Sure" Greg mumbled as he shut his locker and perched himself on the bench; Nick sat beside him.
"Do you have a problem with me and Morgan hanging out together?" the older CSI asked outright.
"No" Greg said, but it was so steely Nick could tell he was lying; this made the Texan a little annoyed.
"You are so immature!" Nick suddenly snapped and Greg scowled at him "Just because I'm a guy and Morgan's a girl it doesn't mean we can't hang out and just be friends!"
"I know that!" Greg retorted sounding just as annoyed.
Nick sighed to calm himself "Look, Morgan is a really sweet girl, she's caring and funny and a great friend…but she's just a friend." He stated "and we should be able to hang out just the two of us, we barely talk outside work and that sucks. Think about it, when was the last time you and Finn hung out alone?" he asked.
Greg frowned in thought "I don't think we ever have. I don't know that much about her" he mused.
"Well, isn't that a little sad?" Nick asked seriously and Greg nodded, thinking back to how Finn had helped him earlier. "Morgan and I aren't trying to hurt you; we just enjoy each other's company as brother and sister" Nick clarified.
Greg nodded again, but then frowned "What do you mean you're not trying to hurt me?" he asked.
Nick smiled softly "Because I know that you like Morgan, and I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize your chances with her. In fact, when we were at dinner Morgan said she felt guilty for not being able to invite you too so she's planning this surprise meal for you next weekend, so act flabbergasted" he added with wink.
Greg was a little taken aback by this, but he supposed he should have known all along Nick would have his back, and of course he was glad Nick and Morgan were getting on so well. They were his best friends in the world, and Greg was glad they all had each other.
"Thanks" Greg said with a small smile "I'm sorry for acting so crazy jealous"
"Don't mention it" Nick smiled back "but you should probably talk to Morgan too"
"Yeah" Greg nodded "I will"
"Hey, Greg" Morgan said still with a guilty look on her face as Greg entered the AV lab where she was working.
"Hey" he returned the greeting "Listen, I wanted to apologise for earlier"
Morgan frowned "But you have nothing to apologise for"
Greg sighed "Yeah, I do. The way I acted when you and Nick said you had a good time wasn't right, and the truth is the reason I acted that way is because…" he paused and looked at Morgan open mouthed, trying to carefully plan what he was going to say next.
"Yes?" Morgan encouraged him somewhat nervously.
"Because… I like you, Morgan" Greg simply confessed "And I guess the thought of you and Nick alone together made me jealous, and I realise how petty that is now and I'm sorry. I apologised to Nick too"
Morgan smiled "Nick and I are just friends, he's like my big brother" she declared. "And the time I asked if he was single? I was just teasing you…maybe trying to make you a little jealous actually…because I wanted you to ask me out" she shrugged sheepishly. "These times weren't to create jealousy though, I really liked getting to know Nick more but…he's not my type" she said with a lopsided smile.
Greg was stunned by this revelation for a few moments, before returning to what he hoped was a cooler composure.
"I think it's great you're hanging out with Nick, really, I've known him since I was sorta young and he has a lot to teach you" Greg said with a smile "He's my best friend, and so are you"
Morgan smiled at him "About that… I was planning this dinner for just the two of us and I was hoping…that maybe we could be more than friends" she confessed.
"Really?" Greg asked, unable to hide the joy in his voice. Morgan nodded sheepishly. "I...I would like that" Greg told her with a smile.
Morgan smiled confidently again "Good… I can't wait for us to hang out more, as a couple" she winked.
Greg smiled "Yeah, me too"
So! Judging by the new prompts I received and the positive feedback, I take it you guys would like me to carry on with these stories, and that's completely fine by me!
This means therefore, prompts are back open! I'm looking for none Morganders ones in particular (as I still have a few Morganders stories to do) but any idea is welcome really, for any character! I can't wait to hear what you come up with!
Please Review :) xx
