Becoming

Six months later

Elenora walked up to the police station.

All I feel

In my stomach is butterflies

The beautiful kind

Making up for lost time, taking flight

Making me feel right

All I know is you held the door

You'll be mine and I'll be yours

All I know since yesterday is

Everything has changed

"Find out more about the professor, will you?"

"What will you do, sir?" Hathaway asked his governor.

"I'll take a closer look at these" Lewis said, waving the bundle of papers in his hand.

Both men sat down at their desk. They had just returned from interviewing a possible witness in the murder they were currently investigating. Focused on their work they didn't notice the woman standing in the doorway until she spoke.

"Hi, there."

Lewis and Hathaway turned their heads and both started smiling. Elenora smiled back at them.

"Hi" Hathaway greeted.

He was about to stand up to greet her more properly but she gestured that he should remain seated. Lewis looked at his sergeant, the smile on his face, the sparkle in his eyes, the happiness it showed. The past months he'd got happier than Lewis had ever seen him before. And the reason for that now walked up to his sergeant's desk, her happiness matching his.

"I need to tell you something."

Although it didn't sound alarming, Lewis thought it might be best if he left them alone for a minute.

"Should I leave?" he pointed to the door.

"No, please stay" Elenora responded, turning towards him. "You might as well hear it from me."

Not missing a beat she turned back to Hathaway.

"I went to my GP this morning."

Hathaway's face clouded and even Lewis became slightly worried now. But Elenora's face still beamed. Lewis got the feeling there was more to it.

"About the nausea and the vomiting, was it?" Hathaway asked cautiously.

Elenora nodded. But before he could ask what the GP had said, she continued

"She says we're ignorant of the symptoms, of what they mean."

Lewis had understood as soon as he'd heard the symptoms and a smile crept up his face. But his sergeant... How could he be so smart and miss this? He decided to let him figure it out by himself though and kept quiet.

"What is it?" Hathaway asked, a concerned look in his eyes. She noticed.

"It's not terribly bad" she said realizing he hadn't made the connection just yet. One quick glance at Lewis told her he had. But then again, he had two.

"What then? Terribly good?!"

Hathaway got just a little annoyed by the non-information Elenora gave him. She seemed to have no trouble torturing him. Even now she said nothing. She only placed her hand delicately on her belly, tracing the motion with her eyes before looking back at him.

All of a sudden there was a spark in his brain. Reasoning should have brought him to this point but it hadn't. She had. His eyes grew big.

"Are you... are we...?" he stammered.

"Yes, James, I am pregnant. We're expecting a baby."

Hathaway jumped out of his chair.

"Are you sure?"

"I checked" she answered, her voice going up in joy.

He pulled her close, lifted her up and twirled her around. When he put her back on the ground he leaned in to kiss her. She gratefully welcomed his loving caress. The whole thing felt strange to Lewis. He had never expected his sergeant to be capable of such exuberance.

Though, to prevent them from losing sight of the fact that he was still around Lewis coughed lightly. Hathaway slowly withdrew his lips from Elenora's and turned towards Lewis, holding Elenora by the waist. Both of their faces were beaming now, as was Lewis'.

"Congratulations."
