A/N: Hello my amazing readers! Thank you so much for the reviews :) This story is for who suggested that Greg and Morgan have their first fight. Morganders is on the rocks here guys! So expect some angst along the way. I hope you enjoy!
Summary – When Greg asked Morgan to marry him, he never expected this. He never expected that they'd fight, he'd never expected she would say no.
Wrecked Engagement
"Morgan Brody, will you marry me?"
It had been simple enough. Greg and Morgan had been dating for a year, and they were head over heels in love. So, on the anniversary of their first date, Greg decided he could no longer wait to pop the question.
He'd enlisted Finn's help picking out the perfect diamond ring, and Greg prepared a three course meal from scratch at home – Morgan would like the simplicity of it, she was never into making a fuss. When Morgan arrived at Greg's apartment with a shining dress on, hair all in waves, and smile as bright as ever, Greg knew that was the girl he wanted to marry.
So, after they'd finished the meal and Greg brought in some champagne – ring tactically placed at the bottom of Morgan's glass – he suddenly felt a lot less nervous about the whole thing, in fact he was excited, and couldn't wait to put the ring on his future bride's finger.
Morgan's eyes widened in shock when she saw the ring, and when she looked up Greg was down on one knee smiling at her, and that's when he'd asked the question. There was a moment of silence and Greg could feel his heart pounding against his chest. He frowned; why was Morgan taking so long to answer? The reply came like a sharp knife to the gut, a bullet to the heart, as Morgan just looked into her boyfriend's eyes and said the worst thing she possible could've.
"No" It was so quiet that at first Greg thought he'd misheard; he must have, there was no way…Morgan shook her head "No, I'm sorry, Greg, I can't" she said with tears in her eyes.
"What!?" Greg asked in shock, probably more loudly than he should have "How could…I thought this is what you wanted!"
"Don't shout at me!" Morgan exclaimed as she stood up "I'm sorry, I'm not ready!"
"Why? Don't you love me?" Greg asked, sounding more upset than angry this time.
"Of course I do" Morgan replied honestly.
"Well, clearly not enough" Greg mumbled.
Morgan rolled her eyes "You haven't even given me chance to explain!" she snapped "I told you I'm not ready, don't try and push me…"
"No, it's okay, I get it" Greg said with a snide smirk "Clearly I'm just more into this relationship than you are. I love you more than you love me…"
"How dare you!" Morgan cried "Do you really think that I'm that heartless?!"
"No!" Greg yelled back "Which is why if you didn't want to be with me, I thought you'd at least tell me sooner!"
"I do want to be with you" Morgan stressed, although she still sounded frustrated "but I can't…I can't marry you right now…it's…it's hard to explain why"
"Is there someone else?" Greg accused.
"What!? No!" Morgan cried, offended he would even suggest such a thing "Stop trying to push me, Greg! I'm just. Not. Ready. We've only been together a year!"
"Why does that matter? I know that I love you more than anything, and I thought that you loved me!" Greg retorted.
Morgan scoffed and placed her head in her hands "You're not listening to me" she said in a low voice.
"I'm trying, but you have to understand this is not what I was expecting!" Greg countered. He turned away and let out a deep sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Can you just tell me, please? Why are you not ready for this, what did I do so wrong?" he asked calmly.
Morgan looked at him with narrowed eyes "This isn't all about you!" she argued back.
Greg just looked at her in shock. "You think I did all this for me?" he asked in disbelief "I did all of this for you! Because I love you and I thought you'd like it!"
Morgan sighed and waved her hands "You know what, no, I can't do this right now" she said picking up her jacket and going to leave.
"Okay, fine you just walk away, don't even try and fix this!" Greg called after her.
"Stop it! You don't get to decide when I'm ready!" Morgan retorted. "We need…we need some time apart"
"No, no we have to sort this now" Greg said firmly "And if you leave through that door right now, then we are over" he gave the ultimatum with tears in his eyes; tonight should have ended so differently.
"Well, then I'm sorry to disappoint you. Goodbye, Greg" Morgan replied coldly as she left the apartment, slamming the door behind her.
Greg cried out in frustration and kicked the coffee table over; how could this happen? He punched the door repeatedly until his knuckles bled. He was never one to get angry, but the woman he loved more than anything in the world had just left, and she wasn't coming back. Eventually, Greg just fell down onto his sofa and buried his head in his hands as he cried; when had everything gone so wrong?
Meanwhile, Morgan was sat in her car in the parking lot looking up at Greg's apartment with tears streaming down her face. How could Greg accuse her of not really loving him? She loved him more than anything…she always would, even if they couldn't be fixed. She couldn't tell him the real reason she said no, it was too painful and brought up too many memories; so instead, Morgan eventually just had to drive away.
Neither Greg nor Morgan would sleep that night.
Morgan was at the lab the next evening trying but failing to get some work done. She couldn't stop thinking about Greg and how she must have hurt him, but he hurt her too. So far, she and Greg had managed to avoid each other, but still it wasn't easy.
Morgan sniffed and wiped her eyes just as Finn entered the room. The older woman frowned with concern and went to place a gentle hand of comfort on Morgan's back.
"Honey, what's up?" she asked.
Morgan took a shaky breath. "Greg and I broke up last night" she said in a fragmented voice.
Finn was utterly shocked. "What?!" she asked in disbelief.
"Greg asked me to marry him last night, and I said no. We had a massive fight and now we're not together anymore" Morgan explained, but then the dam broke again and she started crying once more.
"Oh honey, come here" Finn said pulling the younger woman into a tight hug.
Eventually Morgan calmed down enough and pulled away, trying to compose herself "Sorry" she sniffed.
"It's okay" Finn assured her. "I've been there, but, if you don't mind me asking, why did you say no?"
Morgan sighed; she had to get it off her chest to someone. "Greg is not the first guy to propose to me" she confessed, Finn nodded but stayed silent, so Morgan went on "I was so young and naive, twenty two, my high school boyfriend proposed to me and I said yes. We only wanted a small ceremony, close family only. Anyway it came to the day of the wedding and he didn't show up, he left me there alone at the alter in front of all my family. I'd never been so humiliated and heartbroken."
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry" Finn said; how could someone be so cruel?
"I guess when Greg proposed to me I feared… I feared he'd get bored of me too and just leave without saying a word. I've found it hard to trust guys since" Morgan said "I must have done something to drive the first one off, I didn't want to drive Greg away too" she laughed humourlessly "Look how that turned out"
Finn placed her hands on Morgan's arms "Morgan, you are one of the kindest, funniest, bad ass chicks I've ever met" the older woman said sincerely and Morgan smiled "that first guy obviously had problems; there's no way it could have been you. But you know what? Greg loves you with all his heart, that's obvious. Do you really believe he could ever hurt you like that?"
Morgan shook her head. "No, no I don't."
Greg was so different to anyone she'd dated before. Morgan's high school boyfriend had been a jock who just wanted to get the pretty girl, but Greg; he loved everything about Morgan, her personality, her intellect, her humour. They'd never fought before, and to be honest, Morgan couldn't see her future without Greg in it.
"Well then, go find him" Finn encouraged with a small smile.
Morgan nodded once and then ran from the room.
"You broke up!?" Nick said incredulously.
He'd arrived at work to find Greg crying quietly in the break room, and the younger man had explained everything – Nick didn't remember the last time he'd seen Greg this upset.
"Yep, I proposed, she said no" Greg repeated so simply, yet so filled with complex hurt.
"Did Morgan at least say why?" Nick asked. He didn't understand; Greg and Morgan had been so in love, Nick was jealous of what they had, how did it all fall apart?
"No" Greg said quietly "But I guess I should have been expecting it, she's not the first one to turn me down after all"
Nick frowned "What do you mean?"
Greg sighed "You remember perfect toe girl with the impossible green eyes?" Nick nodded. "Well we went out a while, I asked her to marry me with ring and all, and then she decides to tell me she'd been cheating on me with a friend of mine for the last three months."
"I'm so sorry, why didn't you say anything?" Nick asked looking at his friend sadly; how had Greg kept that hidden for so long?
Greg shrugged "I just didn't want to talk about it, I was devastated. And I guess when Morgan said no again last night…I felt insecure and that pain of rejection just came flooding back. The first girl said I drove her away, that I was too clingy…it's my fault Morgan left too"
"No, of course not" Nick assured him "You guys just need to talk, I'm sure Morgan had reasons for saying no, you can't just jump to conclusions and put yourself down like that. You're a good guy, Greg, and that last chick was crazy, no, she was a bitch!" Greg gave him a small appreciative smile. "You have to find Morgan" Nick encouraged him "You can fix this, I know you can"
"Yeah, yeah you're right" Greg said as he stood up "I need Morgan in my life" he proclaimed and ran from the room.
Greg and Morgan literally bumped into each other outside of the lab. There was moment of silence as they looked into each other's eyes, and then the blurting of 'I'm sorry!' in unison.
"The reason I said no is because I've been ditched at the alter before and that hurt and made me feel really insecure" Morgan confessed in a rush.
"I reacted the way I did because the last girl I proposed said no because she cheated on me for three months, I was really hurt an insecure too" Greg blurted.
"I'm sorry I left" Morgan said "I should have explained. I know I must have hurt you, and I do want to fix us. I love you Greg, I love you so much"
"I'm sorry that I tried to push you" Greg replied "I was insensitive, and I shouldn't have said we couldn't be together if you left. I love you more than anything, and I want us to get back together too"
And with that, the couple passionately kissed, like they'd been apart for years. The truth was, just one day apart had been torturous enough, and it was something neither Greg or Morgan wanted to experience again.
So, after they talked things through, and Greg proposed again two months later, Morgan said yes, and it was the happiest night of their lives.
Obviously, I found this one quite hard to write because I would never expect Greg and Morgan to have a huge fight, but I hope you found it dramatic and gripping enough! ;) And I hope nothing too OOC.
Keep the prompts coming!
