A/N: Hey guys! Thanks so much for the awesome reviews, and you have no idea how happy it makes me to know some of you are fellow Sherlock fans XD I actually have an idea for another Sherlock inspired story for this collection ;) But in the meantime, we are back with McGeeklover and her love for Hurt!Greg stories, and this time poor Greg is having an Asthma Attack , oh dear ;) I hope you enjoy!
Summary – Greg helps out in the chase of a suspect despite the fact he has asthma, and he certainly suffers the consequences.
Asthma Attack
"Now remember, when we get in there…"
"Let you do all the talking, yeah, yeah" Greg said sulkily and he folded his arms.
The younger CSI and Nick were on their way to an auto shop where a potential suspect was working. Greg was very new to handling the suspects, so Nick had been lecturing him the whole journey how the trainee CSI should just stand and observe and not try to get involved. Greg personally failed to see how that would help his learning, but decided there was no point arguing with his stubborn friend – besides, Nick had to report back to Grissom about how Greg had done.
They arrived at the garage and Nick inquired for Raymond Kelsey at the reception desk – Kelsey was the prime suspect in their serial carjacking case. The receptionist pointed the CSIs towards Raymond's station.
"Raymond Kelsey" Nick said as they approached the man. He stood up and wiped his hands on a rag.
"Depends, who wants to know?" Raymond asked.
"Well, I'm Nick Stokes and this is Greg Sanders, we're with the Las Vegas crime lab" The CSI stated; professional and formal as always.
"Oh yeah" Raymond said as he raised an eyebrow. "And what can I do for you two gentlemen?"
"We have some questions about some stolen motor vehicles" Greg said, and Nick shot him a look. Greg just smirked a little; he wasn't one to keep quiet at all, even if it was told to.
"Is that so" Raymond said as he threw the rag down on the bench. "And exactly what evidence do you have in order to ask me these questions?"
"Well, for a start all the cars went missing within a week of you servicing them" Nick said. "Five of them, a bit coincidental, don't you think?"
Raymond shrugged. "Like you said, coincidence" he smirked.
"Mind if I search your station?" Greg asked.
"No, I ain't got anything to hide" Raymond said, although something about his cool façade was starting to slip.
As Greg searched around, Nick continued to question Raymond on his whereabouts over the past few days. Greg would look up every once in a while to see Raymond nervously watching him out the corner of his eye – this indicated to the CSI he may be close to discovering something.
Eventually, Greg moved over to a pile of papers where he came across something interesting.
"Nick…" he said as he sifted through the files. The older CSI looked at Greg expectantly but still appeared annoyed at the younger CSI for doing his own thing. Greg held up some forms "These are receipts for the sales of the stolen cars…"
Nick looked back to Raymond, and for a moment the man looked shocked. Suddenly, the mechanic grabbed one of his wrenches and flung it at Nick before turning and fleeing the scene.
"Nick!" Greg called with fear, but the older CSI had managed to duck out of the way.
"Stay there!" Nick ordered as he started to chase after Raymond.
"But…" Greg started.
"Stay there!" Nick repeated a little more aggressively before running after the escaping suspect in quick pursuit.
Greg sighed and rolled his eyes. "As if I'd do that" he muttered to himself before running back to the front of the garage, and startling the receptionist with his abruptness "No one leaves this place okay, not until we say" he said firmly to the woman, who just looked at him wide eyed and nodded.
After that, Greg started running around the opposite side of the yard to where Nick and Raymond were going, hoping he could cut the suspect off. Greg was so determined to prove to Nick he wasn't just a waste at this job that he paid little attention to the familiar sensation of his chest beginning to tighten.
Greg's mother had been overprotective of him as a child, not letting him take part in sports, but she really did have good reason to be. Greg suffered very strongly from asthma, but nobody on the team – not even Grissom – knew about it.
As Greg continued running, the tightness in his chest only become more constricted, and his breathing was coming out in harsh wheezes. He knew he should stop, or at least take a puff of his inhaler, but at that moment Raymond ran out in front of Greg and Nick appeared to be nowhere in sight; this only made Greg more determined to carry on with his pursuit.
The CSI chased Raymond all through the yard, dodging barrels, various tools, and bits of scrap metal. Finally, Greg's opportunity arose when Raymond chanced a look back at the CSI, but failed to avoid the metal beam in his way, and so tripped over. Greg was really struggling to breathe by that point, but he knew he had to put an end to this.
Just as Raymond had managed to scramble back to his feet, Greg came flying at the man's back and tackled the mechanic back down to the ground. Raymond must have hit his head in the process, as when Greg looked down the suspect was unconscious but was breathing normally, unlike Greg.
The CSI cuffed the man and then frantically searched through his own pockets for his inhaler. Greg's breaths now sounded like those of someone trying to gasp for air after nearly drowning. His chest felt so tight he could barely move, and it scared him that he couldn't find his inhaler anywhere. He looked around, determining he must have lost his inhaler when he tackled Raymond to the ground, but still it could not be found.
Greg knew he was running out of time, and he still didn't know where Nick was either – just something extra for him to worry about.
Nick had stumbled over an empty barrel Raymond hand thrown at him when they were running, and the fall had left the CSI leaving dazed for a few moments, but Nick knew he had to brush it off and so he continued running. However, a lot of it was guess work as Raymond was now out of sight – the CSI just hoped he hadn't gone back to Greg.
A sudden clatter caught Nick's attention, and he immediately headed towards the noise. The CSI was more than shocked when he arrived to find Raymond unconscious and Greg laying on his side as he desperately gasped for air. Swiftly, CSI Stokes was gone, and big brother Nick stepped in.
"G, what happened?" he asked as he helped Greg sit up, although he knew the young man was in no state to talk. "Did he hurt you? Try to give some indication of what's wrong, what can I do?" Nick said desperately.
Greg started making a motion with his hand which looked like he was spraying something and then pointed to his mouth. Nick looked confused for a moment but the message soon clicked.
"Inhaler!" he said and Greg nodded drowsily; his lips were turning blue and Nick knew he had to act fast. "Where is it?" Nick asked, and the look of fear in Greg's eyes when he inquired this told him the younger man didn't know.
"Dropped…it…" Greg managed to say, but it was very strained and the pauses between words seemed infinite "Round…here…somewhere…"
"Okay, okay I got it" Nick assured him "Just keep breathing, alright, deep steady breaths." Greg nodded and then Nick went on a hurried search of the area to find the missing inhaler.
Fortunately, it didn't take long. Nick found the device in between some more scraps of metal. He picked it up and hurried over the Greg. The younger man's breaths had become worryingly quiet now and he looked like he was struggling to fight consciousness.
Nick propped Greg up and leant him against his chest, using the inhaler to puff some air into Greg's lungs. There wasn't much of a reaction, so Nick desperately tried again, praying he wasn't too late and wouldn't have to call an ambulance. However, the second time, Greg responded well to the air and he started coughing and his eyes grew wide as his lungs started to fill once more.
"Thanks…." Greg managed to breathe as he sat himself up, resting his elbows on his knees and hanging his head as he continued to hungrily take in the air.
"Don't mention it" Nick said as he handed the younger man the inhaler. He looked down at Raymond "You managed to knock him out, scrawny little you?" he asked teasingly but impressed. Greg just nodded; he didn't have the energy to retort right then.
Eventually, Greg was stable enough to leave, so Nick had some officers come and take care of Raymond- who had woken up- and the two CSIs headed back to the lab.
"You do know I'm going to have to tell Grissom about this" Nick warned as they drove away. "Why didn't you tell us you had asthma?"
"For this exact reason" Greg mumbled as he looked out the window "What good is a CSI who can't even chase after a suspect without almost killing himself"
"Greg, chasing suspects is not part of a CSI's job description" Nick reminded him. "It's just…an occupational hazard. Having asthma wouldn't have stopped you from becoming a CSI, but now you're probably gunna get in trouble for keeping it secret. Not only do you jeopardize yourself but possibly others"
"Oh yeah, and where were you when I took Raymond down?" Greg asked accusingly as he shot Nick a rather annoyed look.
"The guy tripped me, I think I hit my head or something" Nick explained calmly.
"Oh…sorry" Greg immediately eased off his assault. "Are you alright?" he asked.
Nick smirked lightly "Yeah, I'm fine. G, I know you think you did the right thing, but it was really not worth endangering your life for."
"I know" Greg said as he looked down at his still trembling hands. "I just…I thought you were being so harsh on me telling me not to talk or not to chase after Raymond with you…I guess I just wanted to prove that I wasn't as worthless as you made me feel"
Nick sighed sadly and glanced at his friend. "Greg, that was not my intention" he said sternly. "I didn't want you to get hurt, that's why I told you to stay behind" he confessed "I just wanted to make sure you were safe. And you're still learning, you have to remember that, you should do what I say because I only want what's best for you"
Greg smiled lightly at this; he hadn't thought it that way, Nick just being the big protective brother. The young CSI guessed he should have known Nick only had the best intentions at heart, and this had definitely been a learning curve for him.
"Yeah, but think of it this way. If I'd have listened to you and stayed then Raymond would have probably got away" Greg smirked.
Nick rolled his eyes. "I told you, I fell"
"Whatever, I just think you're getting slow, old man" Greg teased, and Nick shoved his shoulder in offense, but Greg just laughed.
"I could totally have caught him" Nick insisted. "But also if you had stayed, then you wouldn't have almost died on me" Nick sadly reminded him. "And like I said, your life is more important than catching any damn suspect."
Greg smiled at him appreciatively. "Thanks again man, you really did save me back there"
"Yeah, and I don't want to have to do it again" Nick said firmly "You scared the hell out of me"
"Sorry" Greg shrugged sheepishly "I guess I'm just lucky you have a keen eye and found my inhaler in time"
Nick laughed lightly "Nah, you're lucky I'm so good at charades" he joked.
I hope you are still liking these stories, because I still have an insane amount of Hurt!Greg stories to come XD But, I love writing them, so no worries ;)
