"Mommy where are we going?" The little boy asked as his mother carried him through docks.
"We're going where the bad people can't get us Kotal." His mother looked behind her to make sure they weren't followed as she carried him into a cargo ship. She walked through many cargo boxes until she felt safe enough to set down her son and speak to him.
"Mommy why are we here, I wanna go home..."
"I know you don't understand what's going on but, I tried to help do the right thing but the bad people caught me. They know who we are and where our home is. I had to protect you so we're going somewhere safe, where we can start over."
"But mommy..." His mother put her hand on his cheek.
"I know baby... but it's ok we just have to fight through it. It will always turn out ok, I promise." The boys mother turned her head after hearing the voices of several people close by, she recognized the voices and realized they were followed. She once more picked up her child and went hid further back behind several cargo boxes.
"There here somewhere, find them." The child's mother looked around for a place to hide as she turned her head towards a nearly opened wooden cargo box. She put her child and tried to quietly open the box as she set the lid to the side.
"Kota quick in here." The little boy entered the box as her mother picked up the lid.
"Mommy what are you doing?"
"No matter what you hear or see, do not make a sound and stay hidden. I love my little Kota." His mother made one last goodbye as she kissed her child's forehead, closing the box. She knew the triads wouldn't leave until they find her, they wanted her but if they found her child she could never forgive herself. She had no choice but to let fate decide her child's future. She held onto her golden necklace she had around her neck, praying in her mind.
'Spirits, please protect my child.'
"She's here!"
She looked to her side to see one of the gang members running at her and shoot a ball of fire. She jumped to the side, as she frantically got up and ran away from her hidden child, the farther they were from him the better. She pulled a cargo box behind her, blocking her trail from her pursuers as she made another turn only to be met by a slab of earth to the stomach. She fell to her knees as she held her stomach, nearly puking as she was dragged away by two gang members. She was brought to an open space inside the boat where she was met by a man in a dark grey trench coat with a grey and white hat.
"You should've stayed out of our business." The man looked down at the injured woman who looked up at the man smiling.
"I did... what was right... you people are cruel, who pick on people who are beneath you... I have no regrets." The man crouched down, looking at the golden necklace that the woman wore and admired it. He grabbed the necklace and removed it from her neck.
"But look where it got you, your on the run and lost everything. All except this lovely necklace and your kid."
"Please... don't hurt him... my little boy... please."
"Not so tough now are you, look at you, your begging on your knees for mercy... Too bad it will all be in vain." The man reached in his trench coat with his arm as the woman looked up, now knowing her fate.
"I'm gonna enjoy this..."
All Kota could hear was the pain his mother experienced as she cried out. He couldn't take it anymore, he wanted to stop the bad people but he remembered what his mother told him. He covered his ears as his eyes dropped tear after tear. He heard the noise finally stop, hearing the bad people began to walk away before the ship sailed off. He opened the lid of the box, seeing his mother lying on the floor, and blood coming from her beaten wounds. He slowly walked up to his fallen mother, calling out to her but his mother remained quiet.
"Mommy... please... wake up... m-mommy..." Kota was all alone, he sat beside his dead mother. Trying to wake her up as he began to cry once more. It felt like an eternity being on that boat, but it wasn't long until the boat made it to its destination.
"How's your kid doing Tonraq?"
"Korra is doing good, she acts like she can run into any danger now." Tonraq and one of his neighbors arrived at the harbor to help as a cargo ship recently arrived.
"Haha still the same Korra, been a while since I seen her, ever since the White Lotus found her she's been watched alot."
"She's only a child though, I want her to have a normal life but after seeing that she's the next Avatar, I guess that's history." The two water benders began to enter the cargo ship as they inspected the inside.
"I'm sure she will be... alright..." The two turned to see a woman lying on the floor, and beside her was a child lying on her chest. Both weren't moving but seemed to wear city based clothing, which meant they came from where the ship left, Republic City. The two rushed and inspected the two, the woman wasn't breathing but realized she died from wounds of a bender. The child was asleep but cold, Tonraq felt relief but still felt terrible for the child's mother.
"We need to get these two out of here."
"Right." Tonraq carried the boy out while the other water bender wrapped the woman in clothes so they can bury the woman.
A few hours later
"How is he Katara?" Tonraq asked the elderly healer as she exited the room the boy was resting.
"He will be alright, he just needs some food and rest after such a long trip. But he will need some comfort, I fear that woman you spoke of was his mother." Tonraq nodded as him and his wife said goodbye to Katara before she left. Tonraq took the boy home earlier so he can rest, luckily Katara came on time to check on the boy shortly after. Senna got some food ready after having Korra go sleep while Tonraq watched the boy in case he woke up. He needed to be there to help the boy understand what happened. Tonraq heard the boy move around in the bed as his little eyes opened.
"Your awake, thank goodness." Tonraq felt relief to see the boy alright.
"Mister, where am I?"
"Your at the South Pole."
"I thought I was in a boat." Tonraq gave out a small smile as he explained.
"You were, we found you and the woman you were with." The child realized something as he looked up to the man.
"Where's my mommy?" Tonraq's smile disappeared, leaving him no choice but to tell the big the truth.
"I'm sorry... she's gone." The boy looked down and began to tear up. It was tragic for a child this young to lose everything, Tonraq places his hand on the boys head gently.
"Im so sorry... no child like you should go through this... but she will always be with you, that's a promise." The boy remembered something his mother told him when the man said those words.
"It will always turn out okay, that's a promise." Kota missed his mother so much, he wished he could see her again.
"I know it will take some time for you, but what is your name?"
"My mom calls me Kota." Tonraq smiled, admiring the name.
"That's a good name Kota, my names Tonraq. Now let's get you something to eat, I'm sure your hungry after such a long trip. Tomorrow I'll have you meet the family and give you tour." Kota nodded as he got out of bed and was walked out the bedroom. His new life would take some time to adjust but his life would soon be full of surprises.
