My name is Josiah Davis and I am the fastest man alive. Crazy to believe right. Aight for what I'm about to tell you I need you to believe in the impossible. I need you to gather everything that you think you know about the world and throw it out the window. Can you do that for me? Okay cool.
So for you to understand I need to take you back. Take you back to where it all started.
Detroit, Michigan. The Automotive Capital of the World. The Motor City. Tiger City. Murder City. All those names were names associated with Detroit. But for one man, Josiah Davis, he had another name associated with the city. He called it hell. He never liked the city to begin with. He hated coming back to Detroit whether it was to visit family when he was younger or older. And now he had to live here. Josiah hated everything about the city including their pizza. And the reason he hated it the most was because it wasn't Chicago.
Chicago was home to Josiah. He was raised in Chi-Town. There were so many memories attached to the city. Memories of his father teaching him how to ride a bike, teaching him how to talk to ladies, how to lace a pair of jordans. So many firsts were in Chicago. He left a lot in Chicago. Including his heart and some of his friends. And his father, Joel Davis.
Joel was Josiah's hero. Joel taught Josiah everything he knew about art, music and a lot of other aspects of culture. And it pained him to have to leave him in Chicago. Joel had gotten arrested on a grand theft auto charge which resulted in 10 years of prison time. The only reason he had gotten that many years was because of the fact that he had a shitty ass lawyer and the fact that this was his second time.
Once Joel went to prison, Josiah's mother, Francine Reese had struggled to pay some of the bills by herself. The family had gotten behind on a few months of rent and this forced the family to have to move to Detroit in his grandmother's 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home on Avery Street. So just a month ago, it was Josiah, Francine and his baby sister, Iris Davis.
And today would mark yet another day at Frank Murphy High.
And although he hated the city, he had to admit that it was a beautiful day in Detroit. The birds flying above in the sky were chirping. The skies were clear as the beautiful sun seemed to be rising up as its light shone over the city, eventually peeking into the window of one of its residents. His black silky smooth durag could be seen as his eyes were closed while he slept peacefully in his full size bed in the center of his bedroom with his emerald green sheets. His bedroom was his safe haven. The place where he could go to be alone when he needed to. His black wooden bed frame, which also happened to be a space compartment, held some of his most precious items. Above the bed were several trophies lined on his bed frame from when he was younger. Lined on the walls above his bed were some of the jerseys he wore whether they be AAU, Middle or Little Leagues. There were a few medals as well hanging up. He had green window curtains and on the wall he had a black wooden bookshelf lined with several books ranging from autobiographies of athletes to books having to do with art, music and engineering On some of the shelves were pictures of memories and people held most
important to him. Under the bookshelf was a black desk with green lights lined up under the bookshelf that went all across the desk.
Above the desk was a board where he had a few local newspaper articles that had him
featured in it. He had a black and green chair to go along with. His walls were painted a
pale green with the ceiling being a gigantic painting of a forest. On the wall beside the
bookshelf/desk was a closet that had a black curtain that covered it and beside this was
none other than his door with a signed poster from Derrick Rose from his Chicago Bulls days on the back of it.
"I want my dreams to rescue me…." His morning alarm sang out as it came from the red iPhone 8 as it sounded off on his black wooden nightstand making him groggily reach out his arm and quickly press down on the button making it stop. The song was "Apparently" by one of his favorite artists, J. Cole. He exhaled as he rose up out of bed. The boy stood up groaning as he stretched. He had toffee colored skin and dark brown eyes. He ripped the durag off of his head showing his low-cut fade with waves. On his face he had a bit of stubble on his face.
"Zay, are you up?" he heard his mom say from downstairs.
"Yes ma'am, I'm up," he replied as he walked over his closet to pick out his outfit for the day. He pulled up open the door looking at the shoe boxes that trailed around the bottom and top shelf of his walk-in closet. The young 16-year old stood at even 5 '10 and weighed in at 175 pounds of pure lean muscle. Those hours of working out during the summer had finally paid off.
"Another day. Another day." He muttered to himself as he looked around his closet trying to pick his kicks for the day.
After a near hour long experience in the bathroom, Zay walked down the stairs. His face had finally been shaved, giving his face a nice clean, smooth feel to it. Almost as smooth as a baby's bottom.
His outfit of the day was a simple pair of black skinny jeans with the knees of his jeans ripped with a black Essentials hoodie with a pair of "Royal Toe" Jordan 1s and a black Chicago White Sox fitted. He had a simple gold cuban chain around his neck and the diamond stud earrings he had gotten from his dad.
"Josiah, finally you're out. I almost feel like I had another daughter in the house," his mom said as she brought out a bowl of cereal from the kitchen and placed it in front of him as his sister Iris sat beside him chowing down on her food. He turned to look at her watching as her cheeks were filled with the sugary goodness of the popular breakfast item.
That's cause he's gotta get ready to impress the ladies," he heard coming from his uncle's deep voice as his uncle, Eddie Davis walked into the room. Eddie was a rather tall bald individual with chocolate brown skin and dark brown eyes sporting a steel gray suit.
"You better not be getting nasty with these girls. I don't wanna be a grandma yet."
"She does have a point nephew, because if you mess up, plan B will be your new best friend," Eddie said as Josiah nearly choked on his cereal.
"Yeah, that's a no on that. I don't need a kid."
"Good now, tonight you're gonna need to be at ATLAS Labs at 8, I have a presentation and I need you all to be there," his mother said as she looked around the room as everyone looked at her intrigued with her message.
"I'll be there mommy!" Iris said with excitement as Francine simply smiled and walked over to her babygirl, leaning down to give her a kiss on the forehead. Josiah looked at his mother and his sister with a small smile before going back to his cereal.
After a near 15-minute drive, Josiah pulled into the parking lot of the school. Josiah pulled up in his father's all-black 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. After he had gotten locked up, Joel left the car to Josiah just so that he would always have something to remember him by. Josiah looked out the front windshield at the school that had become his personal hell and took a deep breath.
He grabbed his backpack and his headphones from the passenger side of the vehicle and stepped out of the vehicle. He placed the headphones over his ears blasting his music as he tried his best to tune out the voices of the teenage kids.
Josiah walked through the hallways with his music blasting through his headphones listening to his favorite, J. Cole. To say that he preferred hip-hop over everything else would be a bit of an understatement. He really preferred some of the old school hip hop but he still listened to the new school mostly J. Cole because of his lyrical ability.
Zay maneuvered through the hallways ignoring any and everyone that wasn't a teacher. He wasn't there to make friends, he was simply there to get his diploma and dip and get as far away from this city as possible.
Finally, Zay arrived at his locker. He had a few extra minutes before he had to get to his next class. He placed his hand on his locker, twisting it to his combination to grab his books.
"Hey Josiah," Zay heard, making him turn his head to see a short, ginger-haired girl with blue eyes standing next to him in her uniform. Her name was Amber. Amber Anderson, since Josiah had arrived at the school, she had been trying to get at him for sometimes. It was something above marking her territory in a way.
"Amber."
"I texted you last night, did you not get my text?"
"No, sorry I was busy with school stuff."
"Oh, well-" she started to talk as Josiah tuned her out. Out of the corner of his eye he could see who he presumed to be one of the star's top athletes, Caleb Peters, judging by his letter man and the way he carried himself. He looked on as he saw Petes leaning up against the lockers talking to a girl who looked to be annoyed by his presence. Caleb was a tanned caucasian male with dark brown hair and blue eyes. The girl he was talking to wasn't recognizable by Zay.
She had clear honey beige skin with long curly milk chocolate brown hair. She had a beauty mark under her left eye with eyebrows above her eyes matching her hair color. And a body that most would dream of with hips, thighs and a backside that drew attention from members of the opposite sex. Her dark blue skinny jeans didn't really do much to hide it either with her white crop top and white Air Force 1 lows.
"I'm gonna go to class now." She said in a soft, angelict one as she began to walk away but Caleb grabbed her by the arm yanking her back.
"I'm not finished talking to you."
"Hey are you listening to me?" Amber said, snapping her fingers in Josiah's face.
"No," he bluntly said as he walked away from her and walked towards Caleb and the girl he was talking to.
"Well, the lady is done talking to you." Josiah said as he rushed over to Caleb and the girl and grabbed at Caleb's wrist.
"Let her go." Josiah said with a frown on his face. Out of the corner of his eyes, he could see the girl looking at him with a hint of hope in her eyes. Caleb reluctantly let his grip go allowing the girl to yank her wrist away. Josiah let Caleb's wrist go as Caleb and the two had a brief stare down.
"That's okay, she wasn't all that anyway." Caleb said as his glare had turned over to the girl he was talking to before he walked away.
"Punk ass," Josiah said referring to Caleb as he walked away, he turned towards her looking on, "you aight?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She said looking down at the ground, only glancing up once to look in the eyes.
"Alright, my name's Josiah," He said as he held his hand out for a handshake. She shook his hand and once more glanced up to look him in the eyes.
"Rosalyn. This is my third day here," She said.
"Well, welcome. Please don't let Caleb ruin your opinion on the students here. I heard from a few girls that Caleb has a tendency to act like his penis size," Josiah joked, getting a giggle from her, making him smile.
"And she smiles. That's great. Well, if you need anything just let me know."
"Alright, thank you." She glanced up to look him in the eyes once. Zay walked away from her with a smirk on his face while receiving a bit of side eye from Amber. He wasn't looking to make friends but a woman like that, he had to have her in his life.
Francine stood in her lab currently typing on her laptop getting some information on the newest innovation being created by ATLAS Labs. It was supposed to be their way of exploring various sources of energy to lower the uses of non-renewable energy sources. But it could only do that if they could actually make it work.
"Damnit," Francine cursed as she looked at the information on her computer. Just as she started to say every curse word in her vocabulary, her partner Devon Hall walked into the lab. Devon Hall was an African American male with caramel colored skin and a black goatee. He had dark brown eyes and wore his lab coat with a blue button-down and black slacks with black dress shoes.
"Hey Francine, calm down, it's just one failed experiment. We have till 8 to reveal the final product."
"I don't know if it's smart to reveal this thing just yet, we haven't had any official tests or anything."
"Yeah well whatever Dr. Haywood says, goes. He wants to reveal now. And as the Head of the Applied Science's division and Vice President of this company, I guess we have to listen to the guy even if we don't like it."
"It sucks having a boss." Francine joked making Devon chuckle as well before he walked over to the computer and took a look at her work.
"Ah, I see what happened. You forgot to put in the right sequencing equation for the power core." Devon said, making Francine sigh.
"For someone so smart, I forgot something so simple." Francine said. Devon chuckled before he started to type on the computer.
"My son and I bought these tickets this morning to see that new Zombie movie."
"Planet Z? Josiah was talking nonstop about going to see that movie a few weeks ago." Francine said as she took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes.
"Really, He should come with us tonight, I can buy his ticket." Devon said as he kept his eyes on the screen.
"Tonight he's actually coming here with my daughter, I could use the support for the reveal tonight," Devon chuckled as he turned his head and looked at his lab partner.
"Well, I think that's good. He'll come here to get some exposure to the future that we're creating."
"Yeah well, that is the goal. Besides, I promised him a few months ago on his birthday that I would take him. And who knows he might actually let that nerd free and stop trying to play Mr. Cool Guy for one second."
Teenagers. Gotta love 'em and hate 'em."
"Got that right partner."
After his long day at school, Zay stood in the driveway of his home with the hood up on his Plymouth. He was working on the engine trying to add something to make his car move much faster. That's what he needed. He just needed to be faster. Driving that car was something special to him. Driving that car. Going fast. It allowed him to take his mind off the serious shit of life.
One thing that was on his mind after the day was the whole altercation earlier involving Caleb and Rosalyn. Word around the school was that Caleb was a known douchebag who had a history of cheating on his girlfriend Molly but he had her wrapped around his finger so much that he could cheat or do whatever and she would still go running back to him. But the fact that he attempted to talk to Rosalyn and basically tried to force her to pay him attention. He could've tried that with any other girl but the new girl, Rosalyn. That was a mistake, a mistake that Zay wasn't gonna forget for a while, a mistake that he would pay for if Zay had it his way.
There was something about Rosalyn that just captured Zay's attention. Maybe it was the vibe he picked up from her or something else. Innocence. There was a sense of innocence he got from her. And apparently, she had her eyes on him for a while since she had been there but Zay never noticed her. Perhaps that was the reason, she couldn't look him directly in the eyes whenever she was talking to him or perhaps it was a social anxiety thing. But she could look Caleb in the eyes with no problem. Maybe he was thinking about too much. Maybe it wasn't that deep. Or maybe it was but who knows? The only thing he needed to worry about right now was the event he had to go to later tonight.
His thoughts distracted him, allowing him to cut his finger on a sharp edge.
"Shit," he cursed as he put pressure on the wound. He wiped away the blood and reached into his pocket grabbing his phone as he took a look on the screen seeing the time. The time was 4:05 which left him with a little bit of time to take a nap.
Josiah's eyes slowly blinked open as he laid on the ground. It was a much different setting than what he went to sleep in. He groaned as he sat up looking around at his setting. He was in downtown Chicago but the city was different. It was empty. Destroyed as if it had seen a war. There was no one walking, no cars on the roads, no sounds or any fumes. Nothing but buildings.
Zay looked down at his body noticing that he was still in his outfit from earlier making him frown. He stood up to his feet, locking around with a bit of fear. "What the hell?" Zay said as he looked. He noticed that the skies were red and a planet that looked like the literal embodiment of hell was in the sky. The odd thing about the planet was it seemed as if it were coming straight towards him.
"No!" Zay said as he turned around and started running but no matter what it seemed like he couldn't get away from the planet. He peeked over his shoulder seeing it get closer. Zay closed his eyes as everything faded to black
"Shit!" Zay said as he bolted up in a bit of panic and fear from the nightmare he just had. He panted for his breath as he closed his eyes and tried to process what just happened in his dream. What was that planet he just saw? It couldn't have been something from Earth. It had to be something alien. Something dangerous. Something that could destroy everything that he ever loved. It could destroy the city.
He looked over on his nightstand seeing his phone. He tapped on the screen seeing that it was now 6:32. So he had about an hour to get to ATLAS Labs in Downtown Detroit.
"Alright, let's get this thing started." He groaned as he rose up out of the bed and walked on over to his closet.
The time was now 7:30 PM and the presentation was supposed to start at 8 and neither Zay, Iris or Eddier were there yet which started to worry Francine. They all promised they would be there to support her for her presentation. She was so nervous about it. She had been working on the project for a year and a half now and it was something that could make or break her career. Having them there was gonna be the motivation and the support she needed to calm her nerves especially since her boss was gonna be there.
A black Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of the ATLAS Labs facility making Francine let out a nervous sigh. A driver in a black uniform stepped out and walked around to the door opening it as a caucasian male with a head full of salt-and-pepper hair stepped out. He wore an expensive all-black suit. Francine recognized him as Dr. Jefferson Haywood, the Vice President and Head of Applied Sciences in Horizon Labs.
"Dr. Mac. It's a pleasure for you to join us." Francine said as she walked down the steps of the facility stairs to greet Dr. Mac in a black sleeveless dress with black heels.
"The pleasure is all mine. I'm excited to see this new creation, I've heard it could be a breakthrough in the way we look at life itself." Dr. Haywood responded as he shook hands with the young woman while his car door closed behind himself.
"Well, that's a bit of overselling but that's a good way to look at it."
Well, let's get on with the presentation. Shall we?" Dr. Haywood said as he pointed up the steps at the facility. Francine exhaled as she and Dr. Haywood began to walk up the steps.
"Sorry mom, we got stuck in traffic," Francine stopped in her tracks and smiled as he and Dr. Haywood turned around to see Zay standing there in his "Shadow" Jordan 1s with black tailored slacks with a white button-up with a gray vest with a black tie underneath. Iris wore a red dress that fit her little 4-year old body with a pair of white patent leather like dress shoes and white stockings with a white sweater. Detective Eddier wore his same suit from earlier, he unfortunately didn't have time to get home to change.
"Dr. Haywood, I would like for you to meet my family. This is my daughter, Iris, my son, Josiah and my brother in law, Eddie," Francine said with the biggest smile possible as she pointed at her family.
"Nice to meet you, Dr. Haywood," Eddie said as he shook hands with Dr. Haywood. Josiah shook hands with Dr. Haywood noticing the way that Haywood seemed to look at him, judging him by his appearance.
"Here at the facility, my partner and I have been…" Francine was talking as she went through giving a tour of the facility to Dr. Haywood, Josiah, Iris and Eddie. Francine had taken Zay to the facility a few times and had shown him some of the things that they had been working on. No matter how much Zay tried to hide it or act all cool as if he didn't care, the technological advancements made by ATLAS Labs had captured his attention.
"And this is the latest innovation, we call it the Detron Collider," Francine spoke, getting Zay's attention, making him look up to see a large room with a device he recognized. A device that was only in theory. A device that he thought could only be theorized. In theory, the Arc Reactor could be a new way of exploring energy. Unlimited energy with unlimited potential.
"That's a dumb ass name." He muttered under his breath getting a jab in the ribs by his Uncle Eddie.
Now in the words of my partner with this one, I'm not gonna let my words show off this bad boy. I think a demonstration would be best." Francine said as Dr. Haywood looked on with a smirk on his face while Iris and Eddie followed them. Zay just continued to look forward in amazement looking as the source of energy glowed.
"Wow." Zay said as he stepped into the room slowly walking towards the big metal ball of technology glowing with energy. He kept walking until he stood right in front of it with its light starting to reflect on his face. He lifted his hand and placed it onto the ball getting a feel before he quickly extracted his hand feeling the heat of the energy on his hand.
"Damn, that's hot." Zay said, taking his hand off quickly. He quickly backed out of the room but turned to give it one final peek before he ran towards his family and the suits. Francine stood at a panel taping on its screen as the doors of the room with the Detron Collider began to close. The ball began to glow brighter than before as it began to give off a hum.
"That's incredible." Dr. Haywood said as he smiled while Iris and Eddie looked on in amazement. Zay smiled as he looked on but his smile turned into a frown as he saw the ball begin to glow brighter to the point that it was almost blinding. Zay shielded his eyes from the light just like everyone else.
"What's happening?" Dr. Haywood asked while shielding his eyes.
"I don't know. Could be a malfunction."
"A malfunction?!"
Everyone in the room gasped as they felt the ground begin to rumble at their feet. The glass panels in the building all began to break falling apart causing everyone to take cover and duck. However Zay was the slowest to react causing a piece of glass to strike him in his right eyebrow causing him to hiss in pain as he placed a hand on his eyebrow feeling the blood seep from his wound.
Zay looked up with a frown and watched as a lightning bolt of energy came from the Detron Collider and seemed to be coming directly for Iris. Zay instinctively jumped in front of Iris and shield her from the bolt, letting it hit him directly in the back! He screamed out in pain and agony as he felt as if his skin was being melted off his body but it wasn't. He felt hot.
"Zay! Iris" Francine cried out looking at her nephew with fear in her voice as Iris got out of Zay's grip, crying as she ran towards her mother and wrapped her arms around her. Francine held a hand out as if he were trying to touch but Eddie pulled her back while she looked on with tears streaming down her face.
The collider stopped glowing as sparks began to fly out of the machine's circuitry while Josiah dropped down to his knees and fell backwards onto his back as he groaned out in pain while the eyelids over his eyes closed. Eddie couldn't hold Francine away anymore as tears began to seep from both of their eyes as they both ran over to Zay and kneeled down to him.
"No! No! No!" Francine cried out as she held him in her arms hugging him while Eddie called an ambulance to get him some medical attention. Iris looked on with sadness in her eyes as she cried fearing for her brother's life. Dr. Haywood looked on in panic as he watched the family hold their boy.
One thing was now true, Josiah's life would never be the same. Out of all the people in the room right now, none of their lives would be the same. And Detroit was never gonna be the same. The entire world was never gonna be the same again.
So that was crazy enough but trust me it's only gonna just begun and it's going to get a lot crazier than that. And I'm talking bat-shit crazy.
Notes from the Author: What's popping dudes and dudettes. So this is my first attempt at doing a story. I've seen people do it over the years but I've never had the balls to actually do one myself until now. With that Flash movie coming up I got inspired to do my own speedster. So this is Earth 62, on Earth 62 my OC, Josiah Davis is the only hero. He does exist in the DC Multiverse so he can travel to other worlds when he learns how to travel through the multiverse and how to vibrate at their frequency. I got the idea of this thanks to the Arrowverse and how they had Supergirl on a different Earth until crisis.
And I also wanted to wait until the end to announce this. I am interested in taking a few OCs for this fic. I would like mostly villains but I might make a few exceptions depending on the OC. If you're interested, hmu and we can talk business.
But for now, Ciao
