Jace POV:
I never thought that the Clave could have gotten their heads further up their asses, but then again, you learn new things every day.
For some reason, they needed the shadowhunters of New York to come in and 'help' with a new law (complete bullshit if you ask me. I think it was more of an opportunity to boss us around and mess with us while they had us). I had been looking forward to leaving Idris to go back and see Clary. Even though we had been separated for just over 48 hours, it felt like years since I had last seen her; the spark in her emerald green eyes, the fiery cascade of her hair, the petite but irresistible figure of her body.
My daydreams were cut short by Alec as he shook one of my shoulders to gain my attention. "You're going through the portal after mom and dad, okay?"
I gave a short nod, trying not to show how annoyed I was. As soon as I saw Robert's figure step through the colourful swirls of the portal, I counted to 3 and stepped in after him. I found I was immensely glad I had waited before going through because as soon as I saw the other side of the portal, the first thing I realized was that Robert was just getting up. I tried to roll off to the side as I fell to the ground, and successfully managed to not land on my adopted father.
Gracefully getting up, I looked around for my girlfriend but got worried when I saw only those who had come before me. I scanned the institute lawn again but I only got a feeling of dread seeping into my blood and bones as I realized she wasn't here. Clary had promised that she would be waiting for me as I came back. I checked my phone: 3:54. I got even more worried. We were originally supposed to portal back at around 1:00pm, but Clary would have waited.
Mentally slapping myself, I told myself that she must be inside getting something to eat. Running up the steps, I slammed and repeatedly jabbed the button for the elevator, which just couldn't get down fast enough. Once I was inside and moving up, I couldn't keep still. I kept tapping my foot, wringing my hands, dying of anticipation.
The doors hadn't even completely opened before I pelted out and towards the kitchen. "Clary! I'm back!" I couldn't help the grin growing on my face as the carpet nearly caught flame. Between one second and the next, I was standing in the middle of the kitchen. I turned around in a circle only to realize Clary wasn't here either. I was starting to get desperate as I bolted towards her room. Again, I found it empty. I knocked on her washroom door and I got no response. I thought for a second, then stood ramrod straight.
"The greenhouse!" The realization slipped out of my mouth, but I didn't care. Of course she would be there; Clary loved to sketch the views and the flowers from there. Running towards the roof, I could only picture Clary's face, her response to my arrival. I would be sweeping her into my arms, kissing her furiously as I apologised for being late. I would spin her around in circles, and set her down and hold her close, the way I had wanted to since I had left her. The gap in my heart would mend itself, and I would have her in my arms, safe and sound.
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't realize I was in the greenhouse until I slammed into one of the concrete barriers around the plants. I landed with my face in the dirt but scrambled to stand up straight. Clary wouldn't let me forget that for weeks to come but my stomach kept doing flips and turns, as if it felt that something was wrong. I looked around, but my ears figured it out before my eyes could: I couldn't hear Clary's laughter.
She wasn't here either, and after a few more torturous moments, I found out that Clary wasn't in any of the other rooms of the institute.
God dammit, where was she?
The others, especially Alec, were looking at me like I was some sort of possessed mad man. He didn't understand. If his sparkly man candy were to have mysteriously vanished-wait! That's it! I need to find his sparkly man candy, and by that I mean none other than the famous Magnus Bane. Luckily, he was here to make sure his Aly-poo made it through the portal with nothing more than a grass mark.
I took him by the elbow just as he was about to check to make Alec's lips were ok and dragged him off to the library.
"The Hell Wayland! I was making sure Alec was alright!" He wrenched his elbow out of my grasp and glared at me with those eerie cat eyes as he angrily crossed his arms across his chest, puffing it out with annoyance. To complete the effect, he then promptly turned his head to the side, and proceeded to be the most mature man I knew as I began to talk.
"Magnus, I need your help! I need to find Clar-"
"LA LA LA LA LA! I can't hear you!" Great move Magnus, great move. If Alec knew…
I rolled my eyes and adopted a very Isabelle pose. Displacing my feet by a minor amount, I cocked my hip to the side while putting my hands on both my hips, and tilted my head while giving my very best really? look. If he wanted to be a girl about it, so would I. (A/N: not that I'm trying to be rude to girls, I am one myself and hate it when people downplay girls….Ugh, just-lets get back to the story, shall we?) But being the nervous wreck I was, I was the first to snap.
"MAGNUS! I need you to listen. This is serious." He still wouldn't look. Ugh, I didn't want it to get to this. Damn I would do anything for that girl, but she was worth it, every second of it. "Please?"
Magnus seemed to be shocked that I resorted to saying please, an extreme rarity for anyone that wasn't a redhead, and turned to face me. "What is it?"
"I can't find Clary anywhere! She said she would stay and wait for me if I were late, and she isn't here! Can you track her?" Desperation slipped into my voice as I attempted to appeal to Magnus about my situation. Magnus huffed, then silently stuck out his hand, beckoning me closer. As I took a step closer and waited, he gave an extremely exaggerated huff of indignance and told me that he needed something of Clary's in order to track her…right. Forgot about that.
I took out the Morgenstern ring that was on it's chain, having rested on my person for the entire trip. Clary had given it to me so that I could think of her when I took it out. I shook my head at her when she gave it to me; I already thought about her in every moment I had, whether it was in my conscious thoughts, my daydreams or my actual dreams.
I dropped the chain with the ring into Magnus's palm, the slightly warm metal leaving my fingers and pooling around the ring. Magnus closed his eyes and a slightly blue aura glowed around his closed fist as he mumbled a spell under his breath. When he opened his eyes, they flickered to me with a worried expression before he smoothed it out and dropped the ring back in my outstreached hand. As soon as the metal left his fingers, I stuffed it back into my pocket with haste, not wanting to loose it.
"Well? Where is she? Did you see her at all?" Questions flew out of my mouth, and Magnus was kind enough to wait until I had finished before he started speaking.
"I saw her, but you can't interrupt me." Well spoken, because I was just about to. "You may not like what you have to do to get her back. And I am willing to be that you wont like what you find out either. You still want me to tell you, because I can go get her myself and save you the pain. It would only take a day, no longer than that."
I was reeling. She was taken!? When? How; by who? I knew I shouldn't have left her alone, I knew it. I should have taken her with me to Idris, so that I could protect her myself. But steeling myself back to Magnus's questions, I knew that I had no choice, not if it was Clary. I would go save her and get her back. I would pay any price heaven or hell would give me in a heartbeat.
"I'm going; it doesn't matter to me what it will take. Where is she?"
"Long Island Sound, near the south western side of the island. (please tell me if I'm wrong, I haven't read the PJ&O in a while, so I'm forgetting stuff…) It would only take an hour or so to get there by car."
"Can you portal me? I need to get there now."
He looked me dead in the eye.
"I can't."
I nearly jumped him at that sentence. "What! Why not? If this were Alec, you would do it! If this were some sort of save-the-world picnic trip, you would do it! Why not to save Clary? Tell me right now before I-" And suddenly, my voice was cut off. I couldn't speak. The most noise I could manage was a heavy breath. I glared at an unflinching and slightly pissed off Magnus.
"I can't because of the magic surrounding the entire Island. I can barely see Clary, much less hold a connection with the spell. I wouldn't be able to, even if I wanted. Whatever surrounds the island is much older than you could ever imagine Jace. The closest I can get you is about 30 miles walking distance."
I went into warrior mode as I spoke my next words. "Then get a portal ready, I'm leaving in 10 minutes."
Magnus went without a fight to the back of the institute as I turned my back on him and headed towards the weapons room as well as my own to get what I needed to get Clary back. I would need to get enough weapons to fight off demons and whoever was guarding Clary.
Next I knew, I was about to step into the portal when Magnus grabbed my arm, pulling me back for a quick word before I left.
"Jace. I need you to listen. You don't know everything that's out there. Trust Clary, and listen to her first. Do you understand? Listen to her first, before you do anything. Anything." I nodded curtly, his words only half registering in my head.
Soon, I found myself at the edge of a forest. There was a strip of a 2 lane deserted road I could see a little over to my right, along with the sun that had started to make its descent from the sky. Knowing I had a bit of a hike to come, I started off at a brisk speed. I walked past the same scenery for what seemed to be hours. I had forgotten my watch back in my room and the only source of time I had was the sun, which had now nearly dipped all the way down, below the horizon. The sky seemed to be brighter here; surprisingly bright for how close it was to Manhattan. I longed to be laying under the stars with Clary in Idris, showing her the constellations I had learned about as she nuzzled into my side. I kept walking and walking, my pace never slowing. Soon, it became night and I was navigating myself with a night vision rune along with whatever moonlight was spilling onto my path.
I wonder how much longer I'll have to go until I reach where she- Ooof.
I fell onto my ass ungracefully as I was literally pushed back by air. I got up feeling tingly and more than a little confused. I gingerly started walking towards the spot where I got pushed back, all while I kept my hand out in front of me, making sure to only inch forward in case I were to hit whatever mysterious force had hit me. I was beginning to think that it was just some sort of random or seldom occurring event until my hand hit an invisible barrier. It felt similar to what I imagined a thousand mini fans blowing towards you would feel like.
If Magnus said that he couldn't portal me because of the magic surrounding this place, then this must be where Clary would be; I mean, this had to be the magic he was talking about, right?
I pushed though, trying to get through the wall of wind. It was worse then the day when I couldn't even get out of the institute's door and that was one hell of a windy day. After many struggles, I finally managed to get one of my fingers past, followed by another, then another, until I had a whole hand through. Soon, I found myself with a very windswept look as I wondered who the hell invented that spell, but hey, at least I was through.
Looking ahead, I realized that I was standing on the top of a hill that was overlooking something that might have resembled a valley. In the moonlight, I could only see so many things: what looked like a field of some sorts, where I assumed some fruit grew; a ring of small houses, cabins maybe; and lots of what I could vaguely identify as Greek architecture.
Sketching on another night vision ruin, I saw that I was mostly right. There was a pavilion and a small canoe lake, and lots of those little cabin houses in mainly one area, with the exception of one large white house, which was closer to the field of fruit than the other houses.
I scanned the horizon more carefully, and much to my pleasure, I saw the North Star. Looking in the opposite direction (because Magnus said she was on the South side), I started my trek down to what looked like a beach.
Now hush little ones, as I explain what i have realized: I'm not too great at this "write-chapters-and-be-consistent" thing...
I was finally satisfied with this chapter though, and let me tell you, I tried to write it about 6 or 7 times from scratch. Anyways, to you guys reading this, Thank you so much, and if you could just press that sexy little review button, it would make my day :)
See you soon! (PS: I was better at updates and stuff for my other stories too during the school year, lets pray that wasnt just a fluke)
