What does it mean to be foolish? It's to act like an idiot or appear like one. What are dreams? The things you envision while asleep. What are foolish dreams? The idiotic dreams of a person.
There have been many fools in history, but one showed the possibilities of these foolish dreams. Argonaut, the clown, the fool, and the first hero of the age of heroes. This 'foolish' man ignited an era of hope and union between people. So why aren't there more of him?
Foolish dreams are that of completing the impossible. A hero is foolish for the same reason you need to save the world, but nobody can. The age of heroes only achieved freedom from the dungeon, but never peace worldwide. The Black Dragon was the only thing stopping the world from an age of peace. It slayed countless heroes and ended countless civilizations. It was the epitome of evil in everyone's eyes.
And so, these foolish dreams were seen as even more idiotic. Nobody had the will to slay the Black Dragon, and therefore it roamed free until the gods descended. The gods had a blessing which gave children of the lower world an opportunity to slay the impossible. The age of the gods allowed many heroes to be birthed and soon enough control the dungeon. The only problem was that the Black Dragon was still stronger. The most powerful Familias of the gods at the time, only injured it's belly before being obliterated by it.
As this failure to slay the epitome of evil was shown to the world, the Black Dragon once again fell into a slumber to heal. The failed heroes were banished and killed for greedy reasons and brought the current generation of heroes. These current generation of heroes were worse than the failed heroes as their weakness formed an evil group called Evilus. Evil gods joined the group in order to have there wishes of chaos granted. Fortunately, the new heroes were able to fight back before the city of Orario fell to their might.
This brings us to the rise of a young hero. A young boy who took after Argonaut and his foolish dreams, but this time, the young boy's foolish dreams were far stronger and purer than the ancient hero.
Bell Cranel would show the gods a hero who used foolish dreams once again to fight the dungeon.
The young hero resided in a town far from Orario. His grandpa took care of him, who was secretly Zeus. The two enjoyed the stories of heroes and the knowledge of the world. The two were practically obsessed with knowledge and heroism.
As Bell turned 13, Zeus decided to teach him some things about becoming a hero. Zeus first talked about ROOOOOOMMMMMMAAANNNCCCEEEE, and then about the beliefs of heroes. Bell listened carefully, though his plan for women would come after becoming a hero (duh). Thirdly, Zeus taught the boy swordsmanship in order to slay the great evils of the world.
Years went by as Bell learned the way of the sword and desired to become a hero even more. Zeus was proud of the boy, before they were attacked by the Black Dragon.
It burned the entire town to ashes as it roared in dominance. Zeus and Bell had escaped as soon as possible before it's impossibly hot breath burned them into ashes.
"Bell, you must know one thing before I go and distract it for you to escape." said Zeus, to the traumatized Bell who cried in fear.
"The ancient ruins of Laikros holds a weapon of unimaginable power. It's called the Ascalon Sword due to it being able to wound the Black Dragon. The sword is very durable and sharp and can even cut through the strongest material, Durandal. Retrieve the weapon and hopefully your heroic tale will begin." explained Zeus, giving Bell the map to Lakrios, the ancient city that fell to the Black Dragon's rampage.
"O-ok, I-I'll go." the young boy said, leaving Zeus as the Black Dragon raged on.
Zeus already knew of the Black Dragon's whereabouts, but he didn't expect it to attack the village they were at. Zeus knew of the Ascalon sword but only discovered it when traveling to the village. Laikros held many special artifacts of the past which were used by ancient heroes and crafted by legendary blacksmiths. Zeus only gave him this information because for years the old god had attempted to find a child worthy of the sword. The Ascalon Sword was meant to be given to a future hero who would slay the Black Dragon.
As Bell ran and ran, he saw as the black fire of the Black Dragon raged on across the village which once held his childhood. The young hero looked at the map of Laikros before beginning his journey to becoming a hero.
Bell traveled for a couple months before reaching the ancient ruins of Laikros. It was mostly covered by rocks and trees, but the stains of time couldn't hide it completely. Bell searched for the great weapon as he witnessed the damage caused by that damn dragon. He hated it with everything in his being for killing his only family. That dragon slayed everyone in the hero stories and now killed someone personal to him.
Bell walked around, spotting many incredible materials and weapons until he saw a sword that shone in purity and was as tall as him. It was the Ascalon Sword, which only the pure and heroic may wield. Bell was entranced by it before dropping his own sword and gripping the handle of the ancient sword. The sword shined even brighter before becoming normal once again. The sword had found it's one and only user through many generations of chaos and death.
When retrieving the weapon, Bell had seen other items within the ruins of Laikros. There were 2 golden arm pieces of armor and red cape. He took them as a means to remember his dreams and also to have some extra armor where his old one broke.
With all these 4 items acquired, Bell turned 17 as he traversed the regions of the continent. He stood before a tall mountain where he witnessed the dungeon city before him. The tower was almost taller than the mountain he stood on and the city itself was larger than entire lakes. It was the city of Orario, the city which held the dungeon and had the most power. It was the center of the world and held many gods and adventurers alike. Many were there for the riches and glory, but Bell was there to become a hero that wielded the sword of purity.
His 4 year journey had took so long for the same reason he had to go through the Dragon Valley. He wanted to go around, but knew he didn't have enough resources to do so. The region was very scarce as well, so he had to go through the unknown region without question. This took him over 3 years because of the countless dragons that attacked him as well as the region not being friendly for trespassers. The young hero fought these ferocious dragons with his sword that cut them all in a simple swoop. His sword was so sharp and durable to the point it could cut fire and entire dragons in half. Bell had trained as well within the Dragon Valley, so his swordsmanship got even better overtime. He only trained with the air and the dragons he had to kill.
It was a tedious journey for Bell, as his body had to become lean and defined in the process. The rest of the journey was easy as his time in the Dragon Valley didn't compare to the regions in front of him. It still took a year due to the distance of his destination. Bell had cleaned his armor and weapons on the way, and had begun approaching Orario's walls.
People watched him as he casually walked to the entrance without worry. His golden armor and cape shined in their faces as his sword was on his back, glowing white.
"Hello." greeted the young hero, speaking to the guard before him. Bell's voice was surprisingly deep since he hadn't spoke in over 5 years at this point.
"Name?" requested the guard.
"Bell Cranel."
"Business?"
"To become an adventurer."
"Alright, the cost is 1.500 valis."
The guard looked at him oddly before Bell gave him the valis. His attire was very odd for the current times as he had armor which only heroes seem to wear. His sword was also especially strange as it was sharper and purer than any sword created from the looks of it.
Our young hero walked on as the scene of the city revealed itself. There were buildings that were all either 2 or 4 stories high. In front of said buildings were people selling stuff to those walking from one of the many entrances from Orario. They stood in their stalls, speaking out to potential consumers. Since Bell had lived in such harsh conditions, he had grown taller than most adventurers and had easily towered over many. He was 190 centimeters tall and could easily lift a heavy greatsword if he wished.
"Nice sword kid." suddenly said a smaller figure, looking at his sword.
"Thanks."
"Where'd you get it? I'm Tsubaki by the way." greeted Tsubaki, having left her forge for a bit.
"I got it from some ruins I found along the way. It's called the Ascalon sword according to my father." answered Bell, bringing out the sword for Tsubaki to see.
"The Ascalon sword? It's said to be lost to time and possibly never existed. I don't know if this is the one, but the ancient blacksmith said the purest of heroes would wield it in order to slay the Black Dragon. It's a tale most blacksmiths of heard of."
"Is that so? I've simply seen it glow at my touch, but it never really brings to light anything. My father said it could cut through Durandal, but I've never tried that."
"We could try and see if it's the actual Ascalon sword. I have free time anyways. What's your name though?" asked Tsubaki, having been curious at the sight of such a sword.
"I'm Bell Cranel."
The sword was beautiful to many blacksmiths. It shined in purity and seemed to be a sword that could last through time. Fellow blacksmiths heard of such swords, but they never knew if one could exist. Tsubaki is simply answering to her curiousity of the weapon, and it's wielder.
"Alright, here's some of my failed weapons that I made with Durandal. As you know, it's the most indestructible material, so hopefully the sword won't cut through it and prove me wrong."
As the failed weapon, a greatsword, was put onto a stand, Bell readied his weapon. Zeus had said it was capable of cutting through Durandal because of it's sharpness, but wouldn't that be too much for a sword that is very durable at the same time?
The Ascalon sword went straight through the greatsword. It was as if a knife went through butter at that moment.
"Woah! That sword really is the Ascalon sword! Lemme try and wield it too!" exclaimed Tsubaki, honestly excited to see such a wonderous sword.
When she attempted to grab it, it immediately shocked her with electricity. The sword also glowed in blue as this happened.
"Ow! Why did the sword not like me? Did you put some enchantment on it?" wondered Tsubaki, letting go of the sword as smoke came out of her hand.
"That's a first. When I wield it, it glows in white. I guess after the first person to wield it, it'll reject others."
"That makes no sense though. That sword has been known in history to be wielded by heroes, but they all seem to either die after having it or have to acquire some special item. It doesn't make sense why you can wield it without much trouble." argued Tsubaki, having heard the legend of the sword throughout history.
"I don't know either. It doesn't hurt me and actually helps me at times. It's strange because my father knew where it was but never told me anything about it."
"If that's so, consider yourself special, young hero. It literally can wound the Black Dragon supposedly, and people who wielded it were all heroes. You might as well be the only person to wield it without consequence!"
"Thanks, but how will I repair my armor? The sword can somehow survive a lot, but my armor rusts after a bit." asked Bell, to the famous blacksmith, Tsubaki.
"Just let me do it! You showed me a legendary sword, so see it as a treat! I really like to see epic swords, but this is on another level." offered Tsubaki, having enjoyed being in the presence of such a sword.
With this interaction, Bell had found a blacksmith who's enthusiastic as hell for his sword and yet also knows a lot about it. He would take some time off to visit Tsubaki again, but he had to find a god/goddess right now. Zeus said that a blessing from the gods would help a lot in fighting the Black Dragon, so Bell being Bell, knew what to do when arriving at Orario. He tried to find a god who would take him in as a member.
Bell visited the guild where he only requested for a map of Orario. The receptionist was kind of intimidated at the sight of him, but he said he wouldn't do anything. The young hero continued on his jolly way before seeing the options before him.
Freya Familia
Loki Familia
Ganesha Familia
Hermes Familia
Hephaestus Familia
Miach Familia
Apollo Familia
Soma Familia
Takemikazuchi Familia
Demeter Familia
Goibniu Familia
Ogma Familia
Modi Familia
Mogni Familia
Aphrodite Familia ...
These options made Bell have headache. Freya was definitely a no go but Loki Familia was something worth trying. The rest were also good, besides the Aphrodite Familia or the Goibniu Familia. Bell decided to go to the Loki Familia where he'll try and become a member. If this fails, Bell will turn to the other Familias.
Since Bell traveled from the guild, it took a bit to reach the Twilight Manor. It was a home that held many towers and seemed to represent a flame. They recently put out in the guild that there accepting members, so Bell decided to take a chance. The entrance was wide open where many adventurers stood in line. Yet again, Bell had to wait like always.
In front of the line of potential members stood Finn and Loki. They had agreed to find new members and therefore wanted to find ones with a level 2 status or ones that show experience. Newcomers weren't exactly within the demographic.
"I'm so done with this Finn. There aren't any pretty girls and these guys are all weak and unexperienced. We only got 9 people to join. Let's just make the last ones fight and see who's standing afterwards." complained Loki, having been tired of reviewing the adventurers.
"That's a decent idea, but should we really? I mean, some of them are probably level 2 and have an advantage."
"I don't care Finn. I just want to get some new members that are strong and probably pretty too."
"If you say so. Hey guys! Our goddess said you'll all fight against each other and the last one standing gets to become a new member! So please go to the training grounds and prepare yourselves." ordered Finn, also having been tired of the same continuous process.
"What? I mean it does better for me." said a random adventurer.
"Well than, you'll all be dead if I got to do that." joined in another adventurer.
In his mind, Bell knew they wouldn't stand a chance. He had trained for years and swung so many times that his sword simply became too fast. He would only really mess around before actually doing something special for the fun of it. I mean, a young hero needs his entertainment once in a while.
There were approximately 20 adventurers competing. Most seemed to be level 1 while 8 of them seemed to be level 2. Most were without armor and some had slight pieces of armor like Bell. There weapons were as basic as ever in comparison to Bell's sword that shined in their faces.
"Let us begin!" exclaimed Loki, readying herself for the battle of mortals.
Immediately, Bell was hit by another adventurer to his side. Funnily enough, their sword went straight through his as it split in half. The sword was literally cut in half without Bell even moving his sword. The adventurer gave up at the humiliating sight and left. Tiona saw this and was utterly baffled how a sword would cut another with ease. Bell continued onward as the adventurers around him fought. There were only 11 people left at this point, and things had gotten far more difficult.
"Since you guys are the last ones standing, We're going to put in a level 3 member into the bunch. Hopefully some of you won't get instantly knocked out or something." suddenly declared Loki, spicing up the makeshift arena.
The level 3 member was Liza, a woman who wielded a spear. She had gotten into this mess after Tiona asked her to fight Bell, who for some reason sliced a sword with his own. She didn't exactly believe it, but hadn't fought in a bit so she wanted to see what this was about.
"Come on man, I was having fun until this point. Hopefully I won't cut your spear in half." whined Bell, noticing the spearswoman approaching him.
"What do you mean? My spear is made of Durandal, there's nothing to worry about there." retorted Liza, getting ready to fight the young hero.
"That's exactly why. Hopefully your will won't fall after losing your weapon."
The two engaged in combat as Bell simply swing his sword and easily broke through her defenses. Her armor was cut off with her spear which surprised her. This sword was simply too sharp. An unblessed man had defeated a level 3 adventurer with a sword of unimaginable sharpness.
"See? It's quite disappointing to know that nobody can defeat me with such a sharp sword. It's even worse that my swordsmanship is actually good."
"Huh, well if your swordsmanship is really that good, fight Ais Wallenstein. The level 6 executive of our Familia."
"I'm quite confident, but to make it fair, I'll use any other sword but the sword I wield." agreed Bell, wishing to put a show.
Finn and Loki saw there level 3 member fall to a sword of clear unfairness. It was surprising to all who witnessed it, because Durandal is meant to be unbreakable. Even worse, it wasn't even destroyed by some acid, but rather a sword.
"What happened Liza? That boy's sword just cut straight through you!" asked a worried Tiona, about to take all the blame for what happened.
"The boy agreed to duel Ais Wallenstein without his sword because supposedly his swordsmanship was decent. I don't believe it, but I'm really angry after that." explained Liza, holding her broken spear in her hands.
"Really? I'll ask her than. That boy seems to be troublesome and strong."
Only 4 people remained. Bell had let the other 3 fight it out as he stood there, admiring his Ascalon sword. The last 3 were possibly level 2 and even level 3 if 10 other adventurers didn't gang up on said adventurer. Bell's presence was scary to say the least, he sliced through a level 3 with ease, so why would they fight him? The unfortunate soul that did have to fight him would never stand a chance with his sword.
"Ais, that's the boy. He cut through poor Liza with just his sword, but he said he'll use another one to make it fair. He's pretty cocky, so show him a real swordman Ais!" said Tiona, pointing to the nonchalant boy, who was watching the others fight.
"Are you sure? He doesn't seem that special besides his sword." asked Ais, still weary of the situation.
"Ask Loki and Finn, they'll say if you can or not."
The arena had been left with 2 people. Bell and an unknown level 2.
"Hey kid, your unlucky to have fought me." spoke the level 2, mocking the "weakling" before him.
"Aren't you the one whose unlucky? I can cut every part of your being with ease." retorted Bell, about the slice the adventurers greatsword in half.
"Hey guys! Sorry to interrupt, but Ais Wallenstein wants to fight one of you. I'm looking at you, bunny boy." revealed Loki, as Ais jumped in.
"What? Why you, you weakling?"
The adventurer's sword was cut in half with his armor right behind. Bell got rid of him before walking straight to Ais with no fear.
"You have another sword for me?" he asked.
"Yes." she nonchalantly responded.
The sword was as average as can be, but since it had to be a fair match, they gave Bell a sword made of Durandal to match Ais' rapier.
"Let's start than, Ais."
Everyone's eyes were on the foolish man who challenged there level 6 executive. He didn't even seem that powerful, but the fate of the duel will reveal his worth. The two opponents clashed as Bell immediately shook at the pressure released. Ever since his travels of finding the artifacts of Laikros, he had gained the strength of a level 5 and had practically been able to master the sword as well. The one level difference was still huge though, as Bell couldn't handle the amount of force ejected from Ais' swings.
"I guess being unblessed has it's limits." commented Bell, before making Ais stop for a bit.
"Your not blessed? Than how on earth are you surviving my attacks?" she asked, fearing the worse of her weakness.
"Through my foolish dreams of course. If you want to become a hero, you must challenge the impossible, and it looks stupid at first until said hero conquers that challenge. I've trained countless years for this day, Ais. To challenge the impossible." explained Bell, putting Ais into a state of confusion.
This man came out of nowhere and spoke of heroes. The more she looked at him, the more he did actually seem to be a hero with all his armor and cape. That sword he wielded also shined in purity and heroism as it revealed itself under his red cape. Could this man really be the next hero? And possibly even hers? Only time will tell.
"You won't win. The path of a hero is cruel, and a guy like you should never experience that." replied Ais, charging once again at Bell.
"If you reject my wishes, than I'll fight and show you just how much I want to become a hero!"
The will of Bell grew as Ais witnessed his incredible desires rise. The young hero's wishes being rejected had only made him want it more. As much as this seemed impossible and foolish to those watching on, Bell had slowly chipped at Ais's armor even when he's bleeding out with the sheer force of her attacks. Ais was being pushed back as the others watched in amazement of his desire to win.
"Why do you go this far? You can't become a hero if the Black Dragon killed those far more powerful before you! Why!?" she asked frantically, as Bell seemed to push beyond his limits at this point.
"I don't care if those before me were stronger or if the Black Dragon killed my family. I care about becoming a hero who slayed that damn thing with sheer will and desires. You must understand Ais, a young hero can't stop wishing to complete the impossible if it puts despair into everybody. I do this because I want to put smiles onto everyone just as those old heroes did." explained Bell, slowly passing out from the blood loss.
Bell had finally got a fight of the impossible. As an aspiring hero, he always desired this type of fight. It filled a hero with an incredible feeling of strength and glory. It was where a hero shined so brightly that even the gods can't ignore it.
The fight ended with Bell putting his sword near Ais' nose. He passed out soon after from all the blood loss he experienced from Ais' powerful clashes with her sword. Ais questioned the boy in her head constantly. Why do you go so far to simply become a hero, and why do you want to kill the Black Dragon? Putting smiles onto everybody's faces is such a foolish dream that nobody could wish to do it. So why?
Orario had many gods. Those gods had abilities which can either charm a child of the lower world or see their souls. The most powerful ability is a gods divine will, which only the heroes defied.
Freya held the ability of charming and seeing souls. Every god had a divine will which sometimes influenced the events of Orario. Freya never used hers for the same reason she had different goals than any other god. She wanted to find a lover, her 'Odr'.
As a goddess of love, she ironically never experienced true love. Every god and goddess fell to her charms expect for the 3 virgin goddesses of Olympus. She wanted true love, not a man or woman who only loved her through the means of charms. She had tried so many times to find the right one in the heavens, but she couldn't. She resided to continuing her search in the lower world where she formed her Familia on the way. She became the strongest for the wrongest of reasons and soon just accepted it.
Her travels in the lower world led to nothing but souls which were only beautiful but not loving to her. This changed when she saw a pure white soul with hints of gold form from the guild. She watched on as the soul entered the Loki Familia for some reason. The souls around this person were put to shame as his soul overpowered their brightness. When the duels took place, it blinded Freya as his soul slowly turned to a golden color. When the person seemed to be fighting, his soul shined even brighter to the point it almost was comparable to the sun. Freya had finally found a soul as pure as a baby and as heroic as those in the past. She was in love and wanted to know more about this unknown person.
She hoped this person would be the one for her. The one and only 'Odr' she had waited for all these millions of years.
Author's Note:
It's a strange concept to say the least. I made Bell actually have a reason to fight the Black Dragon and become a hero for this exact reason. Bell's motive is to simply create an age of peace and get revenge/honor all those that have died to the Black Dragon.
The armor and weapon I gave to Bell was to only make the story a bit more interesting. They'll have some other properties later on, but just compare most of the armor to Argonaut's and the sword to a pure white sword with a golden handle.
Hopefully this story won't end up like the old ones I wrote. I either made Bell too overpowered or straight up went off track of the main plot.
Foolish Dreams is meant to be the main drive and idea of this story. Completing the impossible which is seen as foolish to others.
