Hello!
Apologies for the delay between chapters. Recently, I've started to write for my second fic, A Pair of Queens, more than this one. I'm going to try my hardest to update both fics weekly from now on. If I'm a bit late uploading... It's likely because I've been working on my second fic. Anyway, moving on... This chapter is still set in the 2 year break- there's probably going to be a few of these. Suggest what you want to see in these oneshots in a review! Remember to fave and follow if you like my fic enough. But I've rambled for too long now.
Onwards!
Chapter 20
Ylisstol was blazing with colour and celebration yet again. Streets still littered with the debris of the previous celebration flared back into life with the news of the royal wedding.
Chrom and Kit sat in the palace gardens, the prince looking out of place in his resplendent tunic. Kit looked down at his own formal wear, which looked no less bizarre on him.
"What's on your mind, Chrom?" Kit asked, partially to distract himself from the formal wear that he still felt uncomfortable in. "You've said nothing for the past ten minutes."
Chrom continued to stare into the distance. "It's just... Today, of all days... I can't help but think of Emm- Emmeryn." His voice cracked a little at the mention of her name. "I- I know how happy she would be, and..."
Kit was silent for a moment. "I see. But..." He started hesitantly. "Today is a day for focusing on the future. You and Sumia have a whole life ahead of you. I know how much it must have hurt when Emmeryn..." He didn't finish the sentence. "But maybe... Just for today, just for Sumia, you should try and be happy."
Chrom smiled slightly. "You're right. No use beating myself up about the past."
"Exactly. It's your wedding! Enjoy yourself."
Kit stood at Chrom's side as his best man- not that Chrom really noticed. Both Sumia and him were caught in the moment, too infatuated to notice anyone else. Behind Sumia, a line of brisesmaids stood- Lissa, Maribelle, Cordelia- each looking resplendent with their own dresses and bouquets.
Once Libra had finished the ceremony, and the vows were said, the Exalt pulled his wife close and kissed her, to much cheering from the crowd that had assembled.
Kit stepped onto the palace balcony, taking a long, deep breath of the cold, crisp evening air. He was happy for Chrom, but the party was beginning to give him a headache. He felt the twist of sharp pain at the back of his head slowly lessen into a dull ache now that the glaring light and constant noise of the party was behind him. Another long breath filled his lungs with the pure, chilled air.
The palace gardens stretched out before him, the maze of twisting hedges and paths given a cheerful glow by lanterns that defied the gloom of the night sky. Kit saw some of the Shepherds wandering the gardens, some arm in arm, some chatting excitedly and laughing. Lon'qu was obviously uncomfortable with Cordelia's arm around his, and the fact she was so close to him, but- was it Kit's imagination?- he seemed to be smiling as well. Gaius seemed to be managing to get even the stoic Panne to smile, and Ricken was laughing along with Nowi, who was stood next to him.
Kit turned slowly at the sound of footsteps behind him. He saw Lissa walking towards him, and his jaw dropped. He hadn't really been able to see her during the wedding, because of the bouquet she was carrying obscuring most of her. She was dressed in a sleeveless gold dress, in a similar style to her usual cleric outfit, but more ornamented, without the metal support in the lower half. Her face was subtly polished with makeup and rouge, but enough to notice. Kit thought she looked incredible.
She stepped closer to him, leaning her head on his shoulder so that they were both looking out across the garden.
"You looked pretty lonely, just out here by yourself." She murmured, loud enough for just Kit to hear. He leaned his own head over onto hers. Her hair was silky against his cheek, and she was warm when he wrapped his arm around her.
"Thanks for coming out here." Kit replied, in a voice as quiet as hers.
They stood overlooking the gardens for a while, holding each other. Without making a sound, Lissa turned to face him, standing in front of him. They still had their arms wrapped around each other. She raised her hand, sliding it across his collarbone, up his neck, and rested it on his cheek.
"I... I love you." She whispered, so only Kit could hear. Kit stared into her perfect, sapphire eyes.
"I love you too." He responded simply. She gently pulled his face down and pressed her lips to his. They held each other close, neither wanting to let go or break apart.
Blushing, Lissa pulled her lips away and settled into Kit's arms, resting her head against his chest. Gently, Kit wrapped his arms around the cleric's shoulders.
Out of the corner of her eye, Cordelia spotted Kit and Lissa holding each other on the balcony. She smiled at the pair, knowing that no-one would notice them, with all the attention Chrom and Sumia were getting. A chill suddenly passed over her. Even Lon'qu, sat next to her, noticed it. Slowly, he pointed to where Tharja was sat. The dark mage was glaring at Lissa, a tome in hand. A short laugh escaped Cordelia's lips.
"Poor Kit." She said quietly. "Tharja's going to chase him to the ends of the earth."
Even the stoic Lon'qu smiled a little. "I do feel sorry for our tactician."
"Although..." Cordelia started, with a strange look in her eyes. Lon'qu couldn't help but squirm slightly under her stare. "Maybe we should stop focusing on other people's love lives." Before the swordsman could interrupt, Cordelia gently kissed his cheek.
He blushed furiously.
