"What do you mean they weren't there?!" He yelled, throwing a nearby mug of coffee at the wall of what he had designated his office.
"Their bodies were g-gone sir." Stammered one of the men.
"First that imbecile Archer escapes and gets us plastered all over the news and now you tell me that Sam Nicholls isn't really dead?" He yelled.
"What?! N-no sir! They were most definitely dead!" Exclaimed another of the men, "I shot her!"
"Then how do you explain," began their superior as he placed a hand around the man's throat, "Their bodies not being there?"
"Maybe t-they sunk into the sand?" Offered the third man nervously as his friend struggled to take in air.
"If they sunk into the sand how were you able to bring back vehicles? Wouldn't they have sunk into the sand as well?" He snapped, releasing the man's throat and leaving him spluttering on the ground. "Tell me the truth before I take you down where you stand."
"S-sir y-you have to u-under stand that t-the man.. he c-came out of nowhere a-and…"
"Get on with you blithering idiot!" He yelled, rounding on the man and slamming him into a wall.
"The other man ambushed us! We managed to shoot him but he... He overpowered us and we…"
"You ran straight back here and left them with a van load of supplies. Where did you shoot him?" Their boss asked in a deadly whisper.
"In the shoulder. The r-right shoulder!"
"Idiots!" He yelled before whipping his gun out and shooting all three men in the head, "If you're going to shoot at least aim for the head or heart!"
If their boss had waited not thirty seconds longer he would have received a piece of information that could have potentially saved his life, as the three men cut their search for the bodies short because of the platoon of British soldiers they saw headed their way. If he had waited, he would have had more than a mere couple of minutes to prepare for a battle that would have dire consequences for him and for Sam.
…
When Tom awoke two things became immediately clear to him. For one thing he felt a lot better which probably meant that his fever had passed. The second thing was Sam had lied to him.
He had fell asleep holding Sam's hand and now instead of her warm fingers in his grasp there was a neatly folded note with his name on. He didn't need to open it to know what it said. She had gone back to that base to finish what they started. She wanted to be the one to kill her brother's murderer.
In spite of already knowing roughly what it said he unfolded the note and began to read:
Tom,
I know you're probably furious with me right now for breaking that promise I made you but I had no choice. One way or another I need to end this. Maybe when I had all of my memories I found some solace despite the fact that my brother's killer was still at large, or maybe leaving the army and going to work at Holby ED helped me get over it, but I don't have those memories. All I have is a gaping hole in my heart where my brother used to be. I know this may fall on deaf ears but please do not come after me. It's dangerous enough as it is without both of us getting killed.
In light of the fact I may never see you again I think it's time I was honest with you, even though I would love to be bale to say these words to your face. I love you. I know we're barely back together and I still don't remember everything about us before we broke up and I don't really have any serious romantic feelings to compare this to but what I do know is that I hate talking and thinking about how I feel, and maybe that's why I couldn't say this sooner. We've been so distracted by everything that's happened around us we haven't really had time to focus on what our relationship means, and I hope that if I live through this I'll be able to talk to you about it in person.
Sam.
Tom stared at the piece of paper for a long while, tracing the words 'I love you' with his little finger. He had to act. He had to stop her from getting herself killed.
He couldn't lose her.
…
Sorry it's a little shorter than normal but I promise something BIG is going to happen (That you're all probably going to hate me for)…
I'm still planning on giving this story a happy ending… maybe…
