"What's the problem?" Said a cold voice behind Sam.
Her boss had obviously been watching her pace around the medical bay on the cleverly hidden camera she had noticed a couple of days ago. Ever since she had felt as though she had been followed a couple of nights ago her suspicions had been continually aroused. She had first noticed a small hole in the wall outside her room, and upon closer inspection saw a small lens within it, one of five hidden cameras she had found on her way to the medical bay.
Though she couldn't confirm whether or not they were deliberately spying on her or whether there were hidden cameras all over the compound, the guard outside her door when none of the other places other soldiers worked by what she could see on her route to get to work had guards told her a lot. There was at least something suspicious going on here, but Sam knew better than to let on that she knew this.
"I don't have one." Sam replied calmly, turning to face her boss.
"Hm." Was her reply as he slowly walked around the perimeter of the room.
"Hm?" Sam prompted, impatient for him to leave.
"If you had no issue, then why have you spent most of the morning staring at filing cabinet?" He asked coolly, standing next to the offending cabinet.
"I haven't." Sam replied as calmly as she could muster when her insides were doing somersaults.
"Don't lie. The guard told me. Care to explain?" He asked, tapping the cabinet with his right hand.
Sam's stomach lurched. She was right. She was being spied on, for the guard couldn't see either her or the cabinet from where she was standing, there was no way for him to have known and so the only way her boss could have was through that camera. Sam thought very carefully about what her reply should be. It was clear her boss wasn't to be trusted.
"I'm bored." Sam replied with heavy sigh, attempting to cast the illusion that this as the truth.
"Bored?" He repeated, somewhat surprised, "I though you enjoyed your job."
"Oh, I do, when I'm actually doing it. I've been on shift for nearly six hours and I haven't seen a single patient." Sam stated, placing her hands on her hips and nodding towards the empty gurneys for effect.
"You have a point. Your talents are being somewhat wasted down here, aren't they?" He said, casting his eyes around the room.
"Yes, they are. That and I'm barely allowed out of this room." Sam added, hoping to prompt an answer as to why.
"Sam the rest of this compound is extremely dangerous, and you are not trained." He said rather quickly.
"I have military experience. You told me that yourself." Sam replied.
"Yes, but for one thing your memory is vague and for another you may have some amount of experience in the field but you are a doctor, and the only doctor we have at that. We can't afford for you to get injured." He said smoothly.
"You're right," Sam replied, pretending to concede defeat, "I just wish I had something to do in here when I wasn't treating patients!"
"I'm apologize for the lack of entertainment. I'll try and figure something out but as I'm sure you'll understand it is not a priority."
"Of course."
"I'll take my leave, then."
Following a curt nod towards Sam and then another towards the guard outside her door he then set off down the corridor and out of sight, tailcoat whipping around the corner behind him.
Sam released a breath she didn't realise she had been holding and walked over he the filing cabinet. She had about a minute or so by her own estimation before her boss was back in front of those cameras, assuming that they were in his office. She gave the top cabinet drawer, the one with the small hole in it which Sam had assumed was the camera, a sharp tug. It would not budge.
She quickly pulled the small penlight she uses for examining eye injuries out and looked around the edge of the drawer, in the gap between the framework and the drawer itself and discovered that there was no drawer, it was simply a sheet of metal with grooves etched in to make it look as though there was a drawer there and a handle had been screwed on. Sam sighed and stepped away. Her minute was up and there was no way to tamper with the camera.
But Sam felt far from defeated. His visit had confirmed everything she needed to know. She was being spied on, and it appeared as though she was being kept an eye on for a reason.
Suddenly the sound of a fist hitting flesh could be heard outside of the medical bay door. Sam rushed over and came face with a man in a soldier's uniform punching the guard that was outside the door, before turning and wildly lashing out at her. Sam moved her arms up to defend but the man suddenly stopped and turned a very pale white.
"Sam?" He said tentatively, walking towards her.
Sam backed away slowly.
"Sam! Oh my god you're alive!" He yelled, rushing forwards and pulling her into a hug.
"Who the hell are you?!" Sam yelled, shoving him to the floor.
"Sam! Don't you recognise me? It's Archer!" Archer shouted, a look of glee on his face, "We all thought you were dead! Tom's going to be ecstatic when he finds out!"
