Without further delay here is the second to last chapter of Broken promise!

I waited. I gave him just enough time to get some distance between us. I went to the hatch and quietly lifted it. I peered inside the dark space. I was ready. I knew the moment I shut the hatch behind me that there would be no turning back. For all I knew I could be too late. But there was something inside me that told me otherwise. I stepped inside and let the darkness consume me. It was just like all those times I passed out. Images of the horrible nightmare I had flashed through my head.

Her screams of agony. Her cold lifeless body in my arms. Her pale features stained with crimson.

I shook the horrible thoughts from my mind. I wouldn't break my promise. I wouldn't fail her again.

I let my eyes adjust and I could barely make out a light in the distance. I stepped lightly with confidence. As I got closer to the light I could hear voices. Taichi's cold teasing tone, was enough to make me want to rip his throat out.

"I have grown bored of you my pet. And you are far more trouble than you're worth. Although….." He paused as if to strategically plan his next words.

I peered around the corner and saw him standing over Mai. His smile was devilish and almost frightening.

"You did lead a very intoxicatingly strong person to me."

Mai's eyes went wide at his words.

"Did you really think I didn't know who he was? Oh my sweet Mai, you lead me right to him. The second I grabbed you I could sense him on you. This started out with me just wanting a new snack, and I figured you would make a great one. You are extremely talented, but nothing compared to him. I knew he would come looking for you but he did surprise me. I never imagined he would be so easy to lure here."

"Leave him alone!" Mai tried to scream but was too weak to get louder than a whisper.

"After getting a taste of him, I did debate not messing with him. He could potentially be too much for me to handle. But how can I resist when he came so willingly into my domain?"

He turned and looked over at where I was standing. My heart stopped. I had fallen right into his trap.

"Come on out you little brat."

I stepped out. There was no way I was showing weakness to him.

I grinned and clapped as I spoke.

"Very good Taichi. I never would have thought someone of your kind would have the brains to come up with such an elaborate plan." I let the smirk fall from my face. "But I'm tired of playing. We both know why I'm here."

I looked at Mai. The look she gave me made my chest hurt. She was so tired and hurt, yet she looked at me like she wanted to get up and protect me.

"It wasn't supposed to come to this!" Her voice invaded my mind.

I gave her a reassuring look.

"Enough of this!" Taichi grabbed Mai up by her hair and put a hand tightly on her throat.

I had no idea how I was supposed to fight him without making him stronger but I had to try.

I let my body be engulfed in a blaze of blue.

"Noll you can do it!" Gene appeared beside me. He seemed to be flickering. It finally dawned on me why he hadn't been around. Taichi was using too much energy and Gene didn't have enough. With him by my side, I was more than ready

"If you want me, come and get me." On the outside I smirked, but on the inside I knew that only one of us would make it out of here alive. And that someone was going to be Mai.

He threw Mai aside and lunged at me. The closer he got the weaker I felt, but I continued to give it all I had. He grabbed me by the throat and pinned me to the wall. I punched him as hard as I could across the face, sending him stumbling backwards. But before I knew it he was back on top of me. Things were beginning to fade. I had given too much too quickly.

"Naru!" Mai yelled out as she jumped on his back.

He quickly flung her off sending her head into the wall with a loud crack. My heart sank as I saw her bloody and broken on the floor just like my nightmare. Her blood started to pool around her. Gene went to her side but couldn't do anything. I pushed Taichi away and went to her side and took her in my arms. She wasn't breathing and I couldn't find a pulse.

Taichi jerked me away from her and I felt something sharp stab into my side. I stepped back from him and pulled out the small dagger he had plunged into me. I didn't even care. It was over.

I remembered the promise I made to Gene.

"I'm sorry Gene." I basically whispered it.

He jerked his head up to look at me.

"Noll don't!" he screamed at me as I tackled Taichi to the ground.

I let out every ounce of energy I had left. I thought maybe if I let him have it all it would be too much for him to take.

"Noll you promised!" I could hardly hear Gene in the background.

I was fading quickly now. I felt like I was on fire but at the same time I was freezing. This isn't what I imagined dying to feel like. It hurt so much more than I thought it would.

"Two broken promises in one day." I muttered more to myself than to anyone in particular.

I looked at the horror on Taichi's face as I screamed and gave out one last jolt of energy.

Everything was blindingly bright, then icy blue gave way to black.

"Wait for me Mai."
