Fiyero was Glinda's boyfriend.

Elphaba was Glinda's best friend.

She was the Wicked Witch of the West.

He was Captain of the Guard.

He was a prince.

She was a criminal.

They were not supposed to be kissing at all.

But neither of them pulled away.

It was so wrong, but it felt so right. Elphaba knew she would regret this later—but that little nagging voice in the back of her mind was hushed as Fiyero pulled her close, returning the kiss with much more fervor. Elphaba saw it as a challenge—and she quickly played along.

Moments turned into seconds, which turned into minutes—but whatever clock counting the time their lips were connected wasn't important.

All they focused on what the kiss.

Finally, Elphaba tuned back into reality and wrenched away, eyes wide in fear. She just kissed Fiyero. She felt fragile, like a tiny doll made of thin glass—and right now she just gave herself up to Fiyero to drop if he chose.

But instead he seemed to hold it as close as he could.

"Elphaba…," he whispered, almost startled. He had come to the conclusion a while ago that he had an attraction to the green witch—but he never thought she'd return his feelings. He figured she'd be so extremely loyal to her best friend that even if she did like him, she'd shove him away so no harm would be done.

He was wrong—and for once he was glad for it.

"Oh Oz… what have I done!?"

Elphaba tugged on her ebony tresses, screwing her eyes shut as if it was a bad dream. She just betrayed Glinda—she had kissed her boyfriend. And he kissed her back.

That had to have meant something—it had to at least imply he might have feelings for her. But that just made it worse. That meant it was a mutually backstabbing kiss. Did that count as cheating?

She convinced herself it did—in an attempt to feel the guilt and the pain of her actions.

… But she didn't.

In fact, she felt butterflies in her stomach when she recalled his lips on hers. His kiss tasted of honey and for a moment she wondered what he thought of her part.

Fiyero enjoyed it more than he should have. The first time—when she kissed in him confusion of the resuscitation—he felt guilt. But now she was kissing him on purpose— kissing him because she wanted to and because she felt something for him— and it felt so absolutely perfect.

His mind wandered to his girlfriend back in the Emerald City—he wanted to feel remorse for this—for kissing Elphaba like he should be kissing Glinda, but… that was the problem. Kissing Elphaba wasn't like kissing Glinda. With Glinda it felt like a good deed—kissing her made her happy, so that made him happy too. But this kiss with Elphaba… it was different. When their lips collided it felt like he found something he had lost for years—it was something inside him that craved to keep the kiss going for just a little longer.

With Elphaba… it was love.

"Fae… it's okay," he whispered, "I… I feel the same."

"That's the problem!"

"No, it's not. I can leave Glinda-,"

"No!"

He was taken back by her shouting, his hands flying up in a pacifying motion. Elphaba was freaking out—she couldn't believe herself. She couldn't believe she just went behind her best friend—her only friend's back—and did that. She couldn't believe he went along with it.

She couldn't believe how she didn't feel the guilt!

"Elphaba… I love you. I mean, yeah, it's kind of soon to think that—but I… this wasn't even what it was like with Glinda!" he protested, "this felt right! With Glinda it feels like… lying."

"What do you mean?"

"I… I don't think I ever really felt the same for her. I mean I do care for her, and I guess I just figured that we'd work out well. I told myself that was right. But this, Elphaba, this feels right," Fiyero whispered, staring into those beautiful brown eyes. "And if I'm not in love with her, and we're still in a relationship, isn't that lying? And isn't it almost like preventing her for being with someone who can return the love? Is that fair?"

Elphaba's eyes narrowed—he was using her morals against her. Clever.

She mumbled softly, but loud enough for them both to hear, "Fiyero… you two deserve each other. You should be with her—,"

"I'm not good at doing what I should, Elphaba."

"But—,"

"Fae," he started, "I love you. Not her. She'll find someone else, someone who loves her to same way she loves them. But that person isn't me. And I don't care if you won't accept it—it's my choice. Even if I don't end up with you, it's better than leading her on."

Elphaba's head was screaming at her to convince him not to do it—but her heart seemed to create the words that left her lips as she said, "Promise me you'll be nice when you do it?"

"I swear to you, Fae."

"Will you be back?"

Carefully, Fiyero cupped her cheek and leaned in, their lips were close—"How could I stay away?"

Any sarcastic and self-insulting comment seemed to flee from her mind. She merely closed the miniscule gap between their mouths for another kiss.

She ended that one sooner, though—knowing the more she kissed him while Glinda still thought they were together, the more it counted as cheating. Fiyero had his arms around her again, but she didn't want to pull away. He didn't want to let go, either.

"I love you, Fae."

And for a moment, she threw caution to the wind as she hummed, "I love you too, Yero my hero."
