Thanks for your lovely comments. This is the twenty first chapter. Hope you'll enjoy it :)
"I will check on you later," Cristina said, smiling, and then left her patient's room. Being her first day back in Grey Sloan Memorial, it'd been a pretty good one. She had one of the best cases as her first one and everyone was pleased to have a two time Harper Avery winner as their head of Cardio. Everything was good and fine and it almost felt like she'd never been away. As if she'd ever spend any five years in Paris and had always stayed there. The atmosphere was just as homely for her as it always had been. She took a breath in, letting it out smiling. She was so happy she got the plane ticket for Seattle. She was home again and as it's always been said that nowhere else can be home. She felt safe again. She did know there was going to be a lot of complications coming her way, regarding the relationship she used to have in that city five years ago, but for that very moment she just wanted to breathe in Seattle's rainy scent and smile, feeling at home, feeling safe.
"Why're you smiling?" Cristina heard a familiar voice say and opened her closed eyes. "Just happy to be back."
Owen smiled, signing the bottom of a paper and handing it to the nurse and looking back at her. "Everyone's happy that you're back."
She smiled even more. "Yeah…" she nodded. Then, she looked down at her watch and back up at him. "By the way, I'm going to go to the daycare to check on Evan in a few. Still want to join me?"
"Yes, yeah, of course," he nodded and got his weight off of the counter of the nurses' station.
"Let's go then," she said and turned on her heels, walking towards the elevators, accompanied by Owen.
Stepping into the daycare center of the hospital, Cristina started scanning the room in search of a head of blond. Most American kids were blonde, but Evan was always easy to spot for Cristina for he was a special kind of blonde in her opinion, strawberry blonde. And even if strawberry blond was still quite common among American kids, it was still a special kind of it. "There," she said, a smile lighting up her face as she saw Evan in a corner playing with Legos.
The four-year-old looked up at the familiar sound of his mother and smiled as well, getting up and running towards her to launch herself into her embrace. He had missed her even though they'd been away for only a few hours. But given he was new in this environment, he'd miss her sooner than usual.
After kissing each of his chubby cheeks, Cristina looked into her son's blue eyes, smiling. "So how did you enjoy your first day here?"
Evan shrugged. "Okkay… but every one has a friend and I'm loney…" he said, looking down sadly.
Cristina sighed, stroking his blond hair. "It's only your first day. You will soon find friends. You're such a handsome, heartbreaker boy. I'm sure all the girls will want to be your friend. Plus, I'll introduce you to one Bailey Shepherd soon. I'm sure he'll love to be your friend," she kissed his head once more. "Oh and there's also Crissa… she's one adorable girl."
Evan nodded his head. He had no clue who his mom was talking about, but figured he would know once he'd meet them. He looked up casually, but then, he saw a familiar pair of blue eyes staring at him, those blue eyes that looked so much like his own. He smiled shyly at Owen and Owen smiled back.
When Cristina saw his smile, turned around and noticed Owen at the doorway. "Remember Owen?" she asked Evan. He nodded.
Having been given a cue, Owen stepped forward and knelt down, smiling at the mini him. "Hey, Evan," he said softly.
Arms still wrapped around Cristina's neck, Evan leaned his head on her shoulder and smiled shyly. "Hey," he said back. They'd become good friend through their video calls, but as it was the first time they were meeting in person, Evan was still a bit shy.
Both Cristina and Owen had huge smiles as they exited the daycare. "He's such a sweet boy," Owen said.
"Isn't he," Cristina said, smiling as she looked up at him. "As much as I love my work I sometimes don't want to be away from him for a second."
As much as I love my work I sometimes don't want to be away from him for a second. How ironic, though. In her opinion a kid had always meant losing opportunities to thrive at work, and now… Owen sighed shaking his head. "It's endearing… to see you together…" It'd always been in his dream to see this endearing scene, but it just hadn't been meant to happen, at least not with his kid.
Cristina's smiled faded away as she looked up at him again, gulping. "Y-… yeah…" She sighed inwardly. She knew complications were to come, awkward situations, and it was only the start of it. So, she decided to change the subject somehow. "So… so are you and Crissa. I cannot wait to see her again in person. I miss that mini me," she said, plastering a smile on her lips.
Yes, it did kind of worked as a smile formed Owen's lips when he heard his daughter's name. "She will be over the moon when she finds out you're here… forever. Well I'm not gonna tell her tonight. I want her to find out herself."
Owen, then, stopped walking. Cristina stopped as well looking at Owen questioningly. "Why'd you stop?"
"What about tomorrow…" Owen started hesitantly, "Would you eat dinner at my place tomorrow night? This way both you and Evan can see Crissa. She will be so happy. I can cook, also. Lasagna, especially for you."
Cristina smiled softly. "Lasagna… you know I never ate a lasagna as perfect as yours… nowhere…" she then looked down and looked back up at him. "Well that sounds like a very appealing dinner… and I'd love to… but… I'll give you certain answer tomorrow, how does that sound?" she said.
Owen nodded. "Okay," he said, nodding again, "Sounds good."
Drained, but a good a kind of it, Cristina flopped on the couch that was in the attendings' lounge. It'd been a long day, yet a good one. Only after 10 minutes of staring at the opposite wall did she bother to get up to get dressed in her street clothes. Just then, though, the door opened, making Cristina turn to look who it was.
Meredith looked at Cristina and smiled rather politely then walked inside and closed the door behind her. "Going home?" she inquired.
"Yeah," Cristina said nodding. "Alex's in fact." She picked up her clothes and went to change into them. She then came back and saw Meredith had sat down on the couch. "Sit, please," Meredith said looking up at her and Cristina nodded, doing so. "You said you wanted to talk?"
Meredith nodded. "So..." she started "…You have a son?"
Cristina looked up sharply, her eyes rather wide. "H-how do you know?" she asked, frowning. Had Owen told her? Or Alex? She was more than ready at that very moment to kill Alex. Meredith, and especially Meredith, wasn't someone Cristina would prefer to let know of Evan. After all the fights they had had and after all the times that Cristina had said Meredith's babies had slowed her down on her way towards success, she didn't want her to know that she had changed her mind and had had a kid herself. Not that she was ashamed she had changed her mind or anything. She just didn't want Meredith to know she had realized she had been wrong. She, though, still did believe Meredith hadn't been as good as she could've been without kids at that time, but she had also understood that kids wouldn't always a be an obstacle on the way of success. Evan, at least, hadn't been for Cristina.
Meredith nodded. "So you do do," she said. She just wanted to hear it from herself. She was so curious to know what had had the power to change Cristina Yang's mind about this very thing and she was planning to find out soon. "I just overheard you when you were talking to Alex about him once… Evan right?"
Cristina frowned more. She'd never talked to Alex about Evan when she knew Alex was in the hospital. "Right…" she said, still frowning.
"I think he was… Evan… choking on ice cream or something and you were freaked out and were asking Alex to reserve a flight for you… Anyways, I asked Alex to tell me everything…" she paused and looked at Cristina, noticing her blood was boiling. "Well don't ever think Alex did tell me easily. He's such a loyal friend and you're lucky to have him. He didn't want to say… I just used my Meduca powers… I made him tell me."
Cristina's knitted eyebrows softened slightly, not completely though. "Why would you even… care to know?" Even though she was back to make everything right again, she couldn't hold the bitterness from her tongue. Yes, she did leave and she did say goodbye to Meredith like she said to everyone, equaling Meredith with everyone. But there wasn't a day that she didn't expect her to call her. No one called her actually, except Alex. But she didn't expect anyone to do so anywans, not even Owen. He was better off without her and she didn't want to be in his life anymore and just wanted him to forget her and be happy with Emma or anyone he'd choose.
But Meredith was different. She was her person, her sister. Even though they both ruined whatever they used to have together for seven years in half a year, she still did use to be someone very special. She expected one simple call. And that never happened. She didn't even know why exactly she expected a call though, she just did because it was Meredith.
Meredith looked at her for a long moment. Of course… she thought. "I…" she started. She was still too proud to answer her honestly though. "I… just wanted to know if Owen was the father…"
"He's not…"
"I know…"
"So that's all you wanted to know?"
Meredith looked back at her from the ground and nodded. "Yeah."
"Good," she nodded. "Okay, Meredith, I don't know what we are now. Enemies, friends or nothings… but I still want our kids to be friend, especially since Evan's so lonely at the daycare. I'm going to introduce him to Bailey tomorrow. Hope you're okay with that."
Meredith sighed. "Of course, of course. I would really like to meet Evan too. It's more than fine." Then, both of them got up from the couch, but before Cristina could exit the room, Meredith stood on her way. "We never were enemies, never will be. Nor will we be nothings for each other, ever. We're just… what we have is just complicated to explain."
Cristina wanted to agree. She wanted to smile and nod and say she hoped it soon would get simple to explain. She was there to make it right, but she was just back. She couldn't just jump back in Meredith's bed and have her head on her shoulder and he arms wrapped around hers and talk dark and twisty on her first day. She was just back and she was not completely over some issues. "We, actually, were nothings for five years, Mer. I don't know about now," she said, again unable to hold the bitterness and walked out of the room.
The next morning found Cristina on the couch in front of TV at Alex's living room, eating chocolate chip cookies.
"I'd bought them for Evan," Alex said, walking in.
"They're unhealthy for him," she said, putting another one in her mouth.
"They're not," Alex said flopping on the couch next to her.
"Whatever," she said and before she knew it the box was out of her hand and Alex was eating from it. "Thought it was for Evan."
"There's another box…" he said, but then paused, looking at Cristina's sparkling eyes. "There's not another box…"
"Whatever," Cristina said again and focused back on what the TV was showing, or not because then she turned back to look at him. "Um… do you know where Owen lives?"
Alex looked at her for a moment, frowning. "And why would you wanna know?"
"He invited me for dinner and I said I'll think about it… well I thought maybe I'd show up at his door and…"
"… surprise him?" Alex continued for her.
"Yeah…"
Alex smirked. "That's beyond cheesy of you."
Cristina rolled her eyes. "Didn't ask for advice. Will you tell me where he lives or should I find it out?"
Alex sighed and got a piece of paper and a pen from the side table beside the couch and wrote down something. "Here," he said handing her the paper.
She read what he'd written, a grin forming her lips. "Thank you," she said leaning forward and kissing the side of his head and went upstairs. "I know I made the right choice when I chose you," she shouted while going up the stairs. Alex just smirked, shaking his head, then he saw the box of cookies and happily ate all the remaining.
At night, after Cristina finished her shift and was on way toward the lounge, Owen stopped her on her way. "So did you make a decision?" he asked hopefully.
Cristina didn't want to see him disappointed by saying no, even though she would go. "Uh, let me just go home and then… I'll call you to tell you," she said.
"Uh… okay. Well I'll start the lasagna anyways," he said, a little hopeless that could not come actually.
"Okay," she said and then left for the lounge, changed into her street clothes and headed to the daycare to pick up Evan. Once at home, she took the quickest shower and then changed into some casual, yet pretty clothes, dried and brushed out her hair and put one some perfume and light make up. Once all ready, she helped Evan into his clothes as well. And finally, they were both in the car and she was starting the engine after putting Owen's address into the GPS device.
"Lasagna?" Crissa asked as she saw his dad preparing her favorite food.
"Yeah. I thought maybe you'd like some after getting better," he answered smiling.
"I love it," she said, smiling hugely and flopped on a chair at the kitchen table, watching his dad intently. After some minutes, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it," Crissa said, jumping off the chair and running towards the door. She opened the door and… she could've had a heart attack and the person at the door would've had to operate on her. God forbid. "C-c-c-c-c-cristina?" she asked, a bit more than loudly, at least enough for Owen to hear. He definitely did hear and ran to the door. "Cristina?" he said, smiling hugely. "I thought you were gonna let me know if you were coming."
"I thought I'd surprise you too, as well as her," she said looking down at Crissa.
"… you're back…?" Crissa asked not believing any of it at all.
"I'm back."
"Forever?"
"Forever," Cristina replied, smiling hugely at her childhood who smiled back just as hugely.
