For a few seconds, they all looked at each other.
"I'd do it." The hostess and Sky said finally.
"So would I." Biff and Sky said.
"And me." Val and Sky agreed.
"I think we should." Dee Dee and Sky added.
"What?" the Doctor and Sky demanded.
"I want her out." Dee Dee and Sky said.
"You can't say that!" the Doctor and Sky said.
"I'm sorry, but you said it yourself, Doctor." Dee Dee and Sky replied. "She is growing in strength."
"When the hell did he say that?" Luna and Sky asked.
"I want to go home." Dee Dee and Sky said. "I'm sorry. I want to be safe."
"You'll be safe, any minute now." The Doctor and Sky said. "The rescue truck is on its way."
"But what happens then, Doctor?" the hostess and Sky asked. "If it takes that thing back to the Leisure Palace, if that thing reaches civilization, what if it spreads?"
"Now, hang on." Hobbes and Sky said. "I think, perhaps we're all going a little bit too far."
"At last!" the Doctor and Sky said. "Thank you."
"Two people are dead!" the hostess and Sky said.
"But you're all happy to add another death to the total? Or are you so desperate to kill that creature that Sky is an acceptable loss?!" Luna and Sky yelled.
"Jethro." The Doctor and Sky called. "What d'you say?"
"I'm not killing anyone." Jethro and Sky said.
"Thank you." The Doctor and Sky replied.
"He's just a boy!" Val and Sky said.
"What, so I don't get a vote?" Jethro and Sky demanded.
"There isn't a vote, it's not happening!" the Doctor and Sky shouted.
"If you want her, you're all gonna have to get through me." Luna and Sky snarled.
Luna moved to stand in front of Sky, glaring at the rest of the passengers expectantly while the Doctor observed them all. If they so much as took one step towards his Looney, he wouldn't have a choice but to let them have Sky.
For a moment, the rest of them stared at her.
"Ok." The hostess and Sky said.
"Fine by me." Biff and Sky agreed.
"Who put you two in charge, anyway?" Val and Sky demanded.
"I'm sorry, but…" Hobbes and Sky said. "You're a Doctor of what, exactly?"
"They weren't even booked in." the hostess and Sky said. "Rest of you, tickets in advance. They just turned up out of the blue."
"Where from?" Val and Sky demanded.
"We're just…travelling." The Doctor and Sky said. "We're travelers, that's all."
"Like an immigrant?" Val and Sky asked.
"Who were you talking to?" the hostess and Sky demanded. "Before you got on board, you were talking to someone, who was that?"
"He called me!" Luna snapped. "He disturbed my sunbathing, doesn't the outfit make it obvious? Our friend, Donna, stayed back at the hotel."
"He hasn't even told us his name." Val and Sky pointed out.
"Thing is, Doctor, you've been loving this." Jethro and Sky said.
"Oh c'mon Jethro, not you too," Luna and Sky murmured softly.
"No, but ever since all the trouble started, you two have been loving it." He and Sky continued, turning on the young woman who had tried to befriend him.
"It has to be said." Hobbes and Sky said. "You do seem to have a certain…glee."
"I'm interested, yes, I can't help it." The Doctor and Sky said. "Cause whatever's inside her, it's brand new, and that's fascinating!"
"What, you wanted this to happen?" Val and Sky demaned.
"No!" the Doctor and Sky shouted.
"And you were talking to her, all on your own, while your girlfriend over there spoke to my son, before all the trouble." Biff and Sky said. "Right at the front, you were talking to that Sky woman, the two of you together, I saw you."
"We all did!" Val and Sky said.
"And you went into the cabin!" the hostess and Sky pointed out.
"What were you saying to her?" Biff and Sky demanded.
"I was just talking!" the Doctor and Sky said.
"You both called us humans like you're not one of us!" Jethro and Sky accused.
"They did!" Val and Sky agreed. "That's what they said!"
"And the wiring." The hostess and Sky said. "He went into that panel and opened up the wiring."
"That was after!" the Doctor and Sky protested.
"But how did you know what to do?" Biff and Sky demanded.
"Because I'm clever!" the Doctor and Sky shouted.
They were silent.
"I see." Hobbes and Sky said. "That makes things clear."
"And what are we, then?" Biff and Sky demanded. "Idiots?"
"Well, not wanting to be the judgemental one here," Luna and Sky began. "but you're the ones planning murder."
"That's not what I meant." The Doctor and Sky said, taking a step towards Luna.
"If you're clever then what are we?" Dee Dee and Sky demanded.
"You've been looking down on us from the moment we walked in." Val and Sky said.
"Even if she goes, she's practically volunteered." The hostess and Sky said.
"There's no way on this planet, or any other, I'm letting you lay a finger on her," The Doctor and Sky warned, his gaze turning dark as he glared at the hostess.
"Will you just listen to yourselves, please?" Luna and Sky asked, taking hold of the Doctor's hand in an attempt to calm him down.
"What d'you mean-we throw her out as well?" Biff and Sky asked.
"If we have to." The hostess and Sky agreed.
"Look, just…" the Doctor and Sky said. "Right, sorry, yes, hold on, just…I know, you're scared, and so am I, look at me, I am. I'm terrified, but we have all got to calm down and cool off and think."
"Perhaps you could tell us your name." Hobbes and Sky said.
"What does it matter?" The Doctor and Sky demanded.
"Then tell us." The hostess and Sky said.
"John Smith." The Doctor and Sky answered.
"Your real name." Hobbes and Sky said.
"He's lying, look at them." Biff and Sky said. "Look at his face."
"His eyes are the same as hers." Val and Sky said.
"Why won't you tell us?" Jethro and Sky demanded.
"He's been lying to us, right from the start!" Val and Sky said. "They both have."
"No one's called John Smith!" Biff and Sky said. "Come off it!"
They all started talking at once again.
"Now listen to me." The Doctor and Sky said. "Listen to me right now! Because you need us, all of you, if we're gonna get out of this, then you need us."
"So you keep saying!" Hobbes said. "You've been repeating yourself more than her."
"If anyone's in charge, it should be the Professor." Val said. "He's the expert!"
"Mum, stop, just look…"Jethro said.
"You keep out of this, Jethro." Biff said.
"Look at her!" he insisted.
"She's stopped…" Dee Dee said.
They all turned to look at Sky, who was sitting motionless.
"When did she…?" Luna and Sky said. "No, she hasn't, she's still doing it."
"She looks the same to me…" Val said. "No, she's stopped! Look, I'm talking, and she's not!"
"What about me, is she…?" Biff asked. "Look! Look at that! She's not doing me, she's let me go!"
"Mrs. Silvestry?" the hostess said. "Nor me! Nothing!"
"Sky?" Luna and Sky asked. "What are you doing?"
"She's still doing her!" Dee Dee said.
"Doctor, it's her." Hobbes said. "She's only copying her."
"Why Luna?" the Doctor asked. "Why are you doing this?"
"She won't leave her alone!" Dee Dee said.
"D'you see?" Val said. "I said so, she's with them."
"They're all together!" Biff said.
"How d'you explain it, Doctor?" Hobbes demanded. "If you're so clever."
"I don't know how to explain it." The Doctor said, answering Hobbes question, his eyes glued to Luna. "Sky, stop it. I said stop it. Just stop it!"
He walked closer to Sky.
"Look at the two of them!" Val said.
As the others argued, Luna crouched down; she couldn't help but stare into the older woman's eyes, it was as though they were drawing her in.
"Mrs. Silvestry." The Doctor said. "I'm trying to understand. You've captured her speech, what for? What d'you need? You need her voice in particular. One of the cleverest voice in the room. You could have gone for me. You could have gone for the cleverest, but you chose Luna's. Why? Cause she's the only one who can help?"
" Her eyes, they're saying something else," Luna and Sky murmured, her voice taking on a dream like quality as she fell deeper into the icy pools.
"Whatever you want, if it's life, or form, or consciousness, or voice, you don't have to steal it. You can find it without hurting anyone. And I'll help you. That's a promise. So. What d'you think?"
"Do we have a deal?" Sky asked.
"Do we have a deal?" Luna repeated.
The rest stood in shock, realizing what had just happened.
"Hold on, did she…?" Dee Dee asked.
"She spoke first." Jethro said.
"She can't have." Val said.
"She did!" Hobbes said.
"She spoke first!" Jethro said.
"Oh, look at that, I'm ahead of you." Sky said.
"Oh, look at that, I'm ahead of you." Luna repeated.
"Sky, let her go!" The Doctor shouted as terror slowly began to eat him up from the inside.
"I don't know what you mean." Sky said.
"I don't know what you mean."
"It's moved." Sky said.
"It's moved."
"It's letting me go." She continued.
"It's letting me go."
The Doctor launched forward and dropped to his knees so he could hold Luna's face in his hands; her porcelain skin was cool to the touch. When he stared into her eyes, he had to force himself to search beneath the glossy surface, to try and find any signs of his Luna still being there.
"Mrs. Silvestry?" Hobbes asked. "Is that you?"
"Yes, yes, it's me." She replied.
"Yes, yes, it's me."
"I'm coming back, listen." She told them.
"I'm coming back…" Luna repeated.
"It's me!" she said.
"…listen. It's me!"
"It's passed into Luna ." Jethro said. "It's transferred. Whatever it is, it's gone inside her."
"No, that's not what happened." Dee Dee protested.
"But look at her!" Val said.
"Look at me." Sky said. "I can move…"
"Look at me…" Luna repeated while the Doctor stared on in horror. Both of his hearts were racing wildly, pounding painfully against his chest and making it difficult to breathe.
He couldn't lose her.
Not again.
"I can feel again…" Sky continued.
"I can move…" Luna repeated. "I can feel again…"
"I'm coming back to life…" Sky said.
"I'm coming back to life…"
"And look at her, she can't move." Sky said.
"And look at her, she can't move."
"Help me." Sky said.
"Help me." Luna begged, her eyes flickering slightly to meet the Doctor's gaze. Tears slowly began to build in her eyes before rolling down her cheeks.
They quickly moved Sky back to the galley as the Doctor scooped Luna up, cradling her in his arms as though she was just a large piece of glass.
"Oh, thank you." Sky said.
"Oh, thank you."
"They've completely separated." Jethro said.
"It's in her, d'you see?" Biff said. "I said it was her all the time."
"She's free!" Val said. "She's been saved!"
"Oh, it was so cold." Sky said.
"Oh, it was so cold."
"I couldn't breathe." Sky continued.
"I couldn't breathe."
"I'm sorry." Sky told them.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't worry Luna, I've got you," The Doctor murmured softly, rocking the Gideon backwards and forwards slowly while he spoke. "I'll fix this… I'll make sure no one hurts you."
"I must've scared you so much." Sky said.
"I must've scared you so much." Luna repeated.
"No, no, it's all right." Val said, going to hug her. "I've got you, oh, there you are my love, it's gone, everything's all right now."
"I wouldn't touch her." Dee Dee said.
"But it's gone." Biff said. "She's clean, it passed into her."
"That's not what happened." Dee Dee protested.
"Thank you for your opinion, Dee, but clearly, Mrs. Silvestry has been released." Hobbes said dismissively.
"No…" Dee Dee said.
"Just leave her alone!" Val yelled. "She's safe, isn't she? Jethro? It's let her go, hasn't it?"
"Think so, yeah." Jethro replied. "Looks like it. Professor?"
"I'd say, from observation…" Hobbes agreed. "That girl can't move, and when she was possessed, she couldn't move, so…"
"Well, there we are then!" Biff said. "Now the only problem we've got is this girl."
"I'm not letting you have her!" The Doctor shouted, holding her closer to his body.
"It's inside her head." Sky said.
"It's inside her head."
"It killed the driver." She told them.
"It killed the driver."
"And the mechanic."
"And the mechanic." Luna repeated.
"And now it wants us." She continued.
"And now it wants us."
"I said so!" Val exclaimed.
"He's waited so long." Sky told them.
"He's waited so long."
"In the dark. And the cold."
"In the dark. And the cold."
"And the diamonds."
"And the diamonds."
"Until you came."
"Until you came."
"Bodies so hot."
"Bodies so hot."
"With blood."
"With blood."
"And pain."
"And pain."
"Stop, oh my god, make her stop!" Val said. "Someone make her stop!"
"But she's saying it!" Dee Dee protested.
"And you can shut up!" Val shouted at her.
"But it's not Luna." She continued. "It's her, she's just repeating!"
"But that's what the thing does, it repeats!" Biff said.
"Just let her talk!" the hostess said.
"What do you know?" Biff demanded. "Fat lot of good you've been!"
"Just let her explain." The hostess insisted.
"I think…I mean, from what I've see…" Dee Dee said. "It repeats, then it synchronizes, then it goes on to the next stage and that's exactly what the Doctor said would happen!"
"What, and you're on his side?" Biff demanded.
"No!" she replied.
"The voice is the thing!" Jethro said.
"And she's the voice!" Dee Dee shot back. "She stole it! Look at her! It's not possessing her, it's draining her!"
"She's got her voice…" the hostess agreed.
"But that's not true, cause it can't." Val said. "Because I saw it pass into her. I saw it with my own eyes!"
"So did I!" Biff agreed.
"You didn't!" Dee Dee said.
"I went from her, to her." Val said stubbornly, pointing to Luna who was still being cradled. The time lord continued to rock and murmur softly her, ignoring the other passengers in the room. "You saw it, didn't you?"
"I don't know." Jethro said.
"Oh, don't be stupid, Jethro, of course you did!" she told him.
"I suppose…" he said. "She was right next to her."
"Everyone saw it, everyone!" Biff said.
"You didn't." Dee Dee told them. "You're just making it up! I know what I saw, and I saw her stealing her voice."
"She's as bad as him." Val said. "Someone shut her up!"
"I think you should be quiet, Dee." Hobbes said.
"Well, I'm only saying…" Dee Dee said.
"And that's an order!" Hobbes interrupted. "You're making a fool of yourself! Pretending you're an expert in mechanics and hydraulic, when I can tell you, you are nothing more than average, at best! Now shut up!"
"All of you, be quiet," The Doctor began from his place on the floor. "The human race… So many times I've saved you without once receiving any acknowledgement but I never minded because you were so spectacular. I've watched as you spread across the galaxies like an infection and marvelled at your perseverance to reach the stars."
"Now you see here-" Biff said.
His head shot up to reveal tears creeping down his cheeks before falling into Luna's crimson locks.
"I never once thought that I'd have to choose between humans and her," he murmured, looking down at the woman he'd fallen in love with. "and you have no idea how much I scare myself but believe me,if the choice I face is between all of you and Luna… I will choose her every time."
"That's how he does it." Sky said.
"That's how he does it," Luna repeated.
"He makes you fight."
"He makes you fight."
"Creeps into your head."
"Creeps into your head."
"And whispers."
"And whispers."
"Just listen."
"Just listen."
"That's him."
"That's him."
"Inside."
"Inside."
"Throw her out!" Biff cried, not wanting to listen to Luna's dead voice anymore.
"Get her out of my head!" Val shouted.
"Yeah, we should throw her out."
"Don't just talk about it… You're useless. Do something!" Val cried to his husband, pointing at Luna whose eyes widened a fraction.
"I will. You watch me. I'm going to throw her out!" Biff yelled, approaching the alien couple on the floor though when he got within a few feet, the Doctor jumped to his feet.
"You're not touching her," he growled, pointing his sonic screwdriver at him.
"Yes." Sky said.
"Yes." Luna repeated.
"Throw her out."
"Throw her out."
"Get rid of her."
"Get rid of her."
"Now."
"Now." Luna repeated, unknowingly spurring Biff on.
Without a moment's hesitation, the older man swung for the Time lord, effectively knocking him into one of the shuttle seats. The Doctor's head hit the metal frame with enough force that he fell to the floor, unconscious, leaving Luna to the mercy of the terrified humans.
Bending down, Biff picked up Luna and tossed her over his shoulder.
"Don't!" Dee Dee cried out, reaching for them.
"It'll be you next." Val warned.
"I don't think we should do this." The hostess said, looking down at the alien who was in a crumpled heap on the floor.
"It was your idea!"
"Throw her out! Just do it. Throw her out!" Val yelled.
"Cast her out!" Sky said.
"Cast her out!" Luna repeated.
"Into the sun."
"Into the sun."
"And the night."
"And the night."
"Get her out!" Val shouted again, glaring at her husband.
"Do it!"
"Do it!"
"Do it now!"
"Do it now!"
"Faster!"
"Faster!"
"That's the way!" Sky congratulated.
"That's the way!" Luna repeated.
"You can do it!"
"You can do it!"
"Vous n'avez qu'une seule vie!"
"Ger her out!" Val cried, narrowing her eyes as she saw Biff hesitate slightly.
"Vous n'avez qu'une seule vie!" Luna repeated.
"You only live once," Jethro murmured, staring at the woman slumped over his dad's shoulder. "That's her voice!" He yelled.
"The starlight awaits." Sky said.
"She's taken her voice!" Jethro tried again.
"The starlight waits." Luna repeated.
"The emptiness. The midnight sky."
"The emptiness. The midnight sky."
"It's her!" The hostess cried, realising what Jethro had realised moments earlier. "She's taken her voice!" She shouted, launching herself forward to grab Sky before pushing her towards the entrance. Wrapping her arms around the older woman, the hostess slammed her hand down onto the button, causing everyone to scream at the bright light that flooded the cabin.
"One…two…three…four…five…six." She counted.
The pressure wall collapsed, sucking both the hostess and Sky out.
The door slams closed behind them.
The loud noise startled Biff, causing him to drop a panting Luna onto the floor. Gasping, she clawed the carpet, pulling herself away from him and towards the stirring Doctor who gazed up at her.
"It's gone," she murmured to him, resting her head against his chest so she could feel his racing heart against her cheek. "It's gone. It's gone. It's gone. It's gone."
"I said it was her," Val said.
-
Twenty Minutes later….
Everyone is sitting around the cabin in complete silence.
The Doctor, after fully returning to consciousness, refused to let Luna leave his sight which resulted in her being held in his lap. Despite knowing that the danger was gone, he couldn't bring himself to trust the humans who were so willing to throw her out of the shuttle.
"Repeat. Crusader Fifty rescue vehicle coming alongside in three minutes. Door seals set to automatic. Prepare for boarding. Repeat. Prepare for boarding."
"The hostess, what was her name?" Luna murmured softly, directing the question to the others in the room though she was only met with apologetic gazes.
"I don't know," Professor Hobbes answered.
