Chapter 14: Night of Colors

Sapphire's POV

I ran out of the gym in pursuit of Ruby's father and saw that the number of people walking around increased. I figured as the day came closer to an end, the more things became busier. I made my way, passing through the growing crowd while bobbing my head up and down to find Norman. My eyes managed to catch a glimpse of a Staraptor's signature red-tipped crest. That became my guide in locating Ruby's father whom I soon found ready to mount Ruvi and fly off.

"Mr. Norman!" I called out.

The tall raven-haired man turned to me and waited till I stood in front of him. "I've done what I set out to do. I'm heading back to Goldenrod City. By tomorrow, I'll be in Kanto to take a ship back to Hoenn." Norman said to me.

That was a long way to travel in a very short span of time. Auntie was right when she said he was pushing himself, but I could understand. He wanted to find Ruby as much as I do, perhaps even more. I recalled how he walked out of the gym a few minutes ago. Though he didn't show it, I could only imagine how disappointed he felt. He came all the way here and in the end it was all in vain.

I wanted him to stay for a while and take it easy so I tried to persuade him. "Ya don't have ta rush. I hear the Ho-oh Festival's tom—"

"—I know what you're trying to do, Sapphire. But I still have to get back to the Petalburg Gym." Norman interrupted before I could say anything more. Then he placed a hand on my head and I looked up at his face. "I appreciate what you're trying to do. But rest assured I know my limits. And I haven't given up hope…"

I saw the strength of his resolve flash through his dark black eyes. Ruby's father was not only strong in pokemon battles, but also strong in heart. It was very admirable and somehow envious. If only I was like that.

"You should enjoy the festival with your friends," Norman added.

"My seniors and the other dexholders are arriving tomorrow. And…" I trailed off when I remembered Lapis.

"And?"

"Mr. Norman …do ya know anyone by the name of Lapis?" I asked, though I predicted that it was useless.

"I don't recall anyone by that name," Norman replied after he pondered a bit on the thought.

"I see…" I wanted to tell him but I had to be certain. Otherwise, it could be another dead end. I didn't want to bring his hopes up for nothing. But one way or another, I'll find out for sure.

Shortly we bid our farewells and I wandered through the city. Everywhere, Pokemon and people alike were helping each other in preparation for the famous festival. Multi-colored lanterns started being hung along the streets and the stalls that Lapis talked about were steadily being set up.

Speaking of him, I wondered where he was now. It took us a couple of hours to travel by air. How long would it take for him to travel on his Sawsbuck? I sighed heavily. Yet again, I forgot to ask for his pokegear number.

I directed my attention towards the late afternoon sky. Streams of yellow-lined clouds adorned the amber ceiling as its radiant sphere slowly set in the horizon. It was a tranquil sight. The cool autumn wind smelled of dried leaves and freshly fried food.

*grumble*

I facepalmed myself. Damn my hunger. I decided to get an early dinner as well as spend the night at the pokemon center. Camping out didn't seem like a good idea, with people arriving every now and then. It would only be a hassle to both me and them.

That night, Lapis didn't arrive. I don't get what he was thinking. It would have been a lot easier if he just introduced himself to Norman and hitched a ride here. Then again, if he really was Ruby and his father saw him, I had no doubt that Norman would recognize him right away. Arceus! Why didn't I think of that before?

I stayed in my room and tossed around on my bed, thinking about it. I wanted to confirm it so badly, but I had to wait till after tomorrow to consult Morty. Ruby, if that's really you, then why do you need to hide it? That was the most critical question that persistently echoed in my mind before I fell asleep.

September 8

Morning came. The saffron sky in the east was tinted with a soft pink glow that contrasted the fading remainder of the deep blue night. Silhouettes of birds flew out of the the tawny woodland and soared through the air.

I woke up early as did most of the people who were finalizing their things needed for the festival. As I looked out the window, I barely recognized the city I arrived yesterday. The streets were lined with colorful stalls and above streamed an array of unlit lanterns that I predicted will give out a spectrum-like glow, tonight.

I rushed downstairs to get out and have a better view. But as I exited through the double door sof the pokemon center, my pokegear rang. Not caring to check who it was, I pressed the answer button and raised it against my ear. "Hello?"

"Good day to you, Sapphire." A formal feminine voice came through the other line. It was more than obvious as to who it was.

My mouth curved into a grin as I spoke up to reply. "Hiya Platina. What time are ya comin' over?"

"Is that Sapphy?" I heard a different female voice in the background. It was more enthusiastic and a bit giddy. "Let me talk to her!" It gradually became louder, mixing in a few giggles. "How's my sweet Hoenn junior doing?"

"Hey Senior Blue. I'm doing okay." I was glad to hear her voice but at the same time, I wondered why she and Platina were together. But before I could inquire, more voices resonated in the background.

"Dia, don't eat all the snacks. Leave some for the rest of us!"

"Bhhut I'mhhh hnngwryyy…."

"Leave him be Pearl. There's still plenty of food."

"Yellow's right. She made more than enough. And they're pretty good too."

"R-really?"

"Oooh. Are you blushing, Yellow?" Blue teased.

I heard a faint muffled squeal followed a variety of laughter that also made me giggle. Everybody's all accounted for, excluding the local trio who's already here in Johto and of course, Ruby. The thought didn't dampen my mood, though. Hearing the happy voices of my friends were more than enough to keep me smiling.

"So what time are ya guys arriving?" I inquired.

"Actually, Sapphy…" Blue trailed off, leaving an uneasy silence.

*glomp*

Suddenly, I felt someone pounce on me from behind. I stumbled on my feet but quickly regained my footing. Then I turned my head and saw Senior Blue's cheerful grin. "SURPRISE!"

My eyes grew big and my heart continued pounding. I totally didn't expect them to be here, now. Blue got off me and I shifted my attention to the others who were standing in the back. Everyone was here; Blue, Red, Yellow, Pearl, Diamond, Platina and even Gold, Silver and Crystal. I could hardly take in what was happening.

"You're all here, now?!"

"Well, Sinnoh is adjacent to the Johto region so we, three, scaled a mountain and shortly we arrived at the Ruins of Alph near Violet City." Platina explained with a radiant smile.

Pearl elbowed his manzai partner. "It was no problem, thanks to Dia—I mean Diamond's Torterra, Wig."

"The rest of us in Kanto met up at Saffron City to take the magnet train. We arrived at Goldenrod where Gold and the others waited for us. " Red continued.

"And Presto! Then it was just a matter of time for all of us to rendezvous at Route 36 which is conveniently located between Violet City, Goldenrod and of course, Ecruteak." Blue finished.

"You guys could have told me! And it's still early. Isn't the festival tonight?" I pointed out.

"You're right about that." Blue wrapped her arms around me and looked at me cunningly. "But we, gals, still have a lot to do to. We have to do your hair and pick out a suitable yukata."

"Also, I have to follow up our reservations at the Inn," Platina added.

"Then while you're doing that. Pearl and I will start exploring the stalls," Dia said.

The blonde boy eyed his friend's intentions. "Don't you mean raiding the stalls?"

We burst into laughter that was soon parted ways. The boys headed to the main streets where some of the booths were already open and serving food, while we headed to the inn to check the rooms and the Japanese robes that we were going to wear.

Much to my surprise, our quarters were actually just one large room with several futons spread out on the floor. According to senior Blue, it was more fun to sleep in the same room and she had something fun planned later on. Somehow, I didn't like the sound of it. Not one bit.

Some of our pokemon made themselves comfortable while we took our time, putting our bags and picking out the various garbs that Platina and senior Blue brought. There was wide array of pokemon theme clothing that made it hard to choose. Some had pokemon prints while others just mimicked the coloration and pattern of a pokemon like a Goldeen or an Azumarill. I just stared blankly at my fellow dexholders as they carefully evaluated their possible choices. I, on the other hand, had absolutely no clue. I never had an interest in this sort of things. How would I know which one was good? If Ruby was here, he would have picked out the best in ten seconds flat. And if none were to his liking, he would have made one himself.

"Mincci-Minccino!" Momo called out excitedly.

I shifted my attention to where she was and saw a large box beneath her feet. Blue's Wiggly, Platina's Cherrim, Yellow's Chuchu and Crystal's Chumee stared at the cardboard cube with wide interest. It wasn't there before, if I recall correctly. Neither Blue, Platina nor Crystal noticed it until my pokemon gestured to it. Since it was by the door, did someone leave it there on purpose?

Curiously, we opened it up and were surprised to find more yukatas. But this time, it was different somehow. I couldn't really put it into words. For one, there was one for each of us. Strange. And they had a matching hair ornaments to go with the finely designed robes.

Blue instantly fell in love with a dark blue garb with wavy pale cyan designs. It had a matching butterfly-like bow for the obi and a flowing scarf for the hair. Judging from its looks, Platina said that it looked as if it was inspired by a Lumineon.

Crystal didn't like fashion almost as much as me, but she couldn't avert her eyes away from a plain sky-blue yukata with white diamond-shaped markings. It was simple but we soon found out that it was accompanied by long stream-like ribbons for the hair and a purple obi with twin snowy streaks. By the looks of it, I figured it was based on Suicune. In my opinion, it really suited her.

Platina's Cherrim took an interest in a white robe with a cherry blossom motif. The top collar area looked almost like the Cherrim's body in sunshine form and it had a pink floral pin for a hair accessory that complimented the theme. Platina gladly chose that and showed it to her pokemon who smiled in delight.

Seeing them swiftly take a liking to the yukatas in the box, I decided to have a look for myself. There were two left; one for me and one for senior Yellow. I took deep breath and peered into the remaining contents.

Anything but pink, I wished silently.

The first one that caught my eye was of course the extremely pinkish one. Ignore. I went for the garb with a radiant sky-blue hue and patterns that reflect the scales of a Milotic. There was some pink to it, but it was better than having it all dyed in that cursed girly color. The cloth was soft and the scales seem to gleam in the light. It was not too flashy too. Thank Arceus. I rather liked it that way.

It was rare for me to like feminine clothes. I guess it goes growing up around the forest. How would Ruby put it? I have a wild girl's taste in fashion? Still, it's not like I don't want to try and be girly. I am a girl, after all.

Now there was just one left. Yellow pulled out the last yukata. It was a dominant pink adorned with intricate shaded wing patterns of a pokemon that I didn't recognize. The white obi that went with it had a red and blue pattern had a long pink flowing sash. Blue seemed keen on seeing her wear it. She said that it would make Red absolutely speechless. It was eye-catching, for one.

Platina noticed that we still lacked our respective accessories. We looked again at the contents and found that the box was nearly empty except for the butterfly hair pin. We assumed that it was for senior Yellow. Hmmm… Didn't mine have one?

I wasn't disappointed. Really. I was just sort of confused as to why mine didn't have an accessory.

The next few hours were busy. We tried on the yukatas that surprisingly were a perfect fit. It was as if someone had carefully planned it. Then we had lunch, well brunch for me since I skipped breakfast. We waited for the boys to come back, but they didn't. But we got a call from them telling us that they'll meet up in front of the gym before sundown. It was hours away but Blue had plans for us before that time.

In preparation for the festival tonight, we had to style our hair and put on make-up. Arceus! I had no choice in that matter, none at all. Blue and Platina had the most experience those lines so they started doing their jobs with Yellow and Crystal because I was the one who was least keen on having those things smothered all over my face. Momo also helped out and did my hair. Most of my pigtails were tied back into a ponytail, leaving only a few locks to frame my face. The others somewhat retained their hairstyle, excluding Platina who tied her hair up and pinned it with the Cherrim-like clip.

Finally, the afternoon was ending. We dressed up in our respective yukatas and headed out towards the gym. Senior Yellow, Platina and I were the only ones to bring along our pokemon, outside their pokeballs. They were the same three that we brought out in our room. But out of the trio, my Minncino was the only one with a pink and blue bow around her neck.

The sky looked as if it was on fire, burning the east with a fiery red and a vivid yellow. But those flames began to fade into the western cool deep blue of the coming night.

I shifted my eyes downward and saw the city streets lit up with vibrant spectrum, literally. It took my breath away in an instant. The lanterns were alit with various colors as they lined up above the festival booths. Many people were wearing yukatas like us, but for some reason, we were getting a lot of stares and murmurs. Blue led the way, feeling all giddy because of the attention. The rest of us followed suit together.

Normal POV

"Hey!"

As they approach the gym, Gold and the others greeted them. Much to their surprise, the boys were also wearing yukatas but less elaborate than the female dexholders. Any headwear they wore before was now gone. Red had a crimson one with white pokeball oultines. Gold had the same design but it was dominantly orange in color. Diamond and Pearl had the inverse theme of Red and Gold respectively. They had white yukatas with either red or orange colored pokeball outlines. Senior Silver was the one who didn't go by those colors. He wore a dark violet, almost to the point of it being mistaken as black, but it still retained the white pattern that the others have.

"Whoa. You all look great! -Hmmm…." Gold grinned widely at them, but only gave a half-smile to Crystal. With a focused gaze, he came closer to her and eyed the Suicune-motif outfit from top to bottom.

"What are you staring at?" Crystal raised a brow at the boy's suspicious look.

Gold sighed and turned around, shrugging unhappily. "Aw… It's not as cute as the others."

"Well, I'm sorry if you don't think it's cute. I, for one, have no problems with it." Crystal crossed her arms and sulked.

Gold glanced back at her and smirked. Then he turned about and softly held one of her deep blue locks that were tied with a criss-crossed white ribbon, drawing the blunette's attention.

Crystal looked at him, still feeling a bit upset. "What now?"

"Silly, I said that it was not as cute …but I didn't say that it wasn't." Gold corrected with a short chuckle. His words flushed a pinkish color across Crystal's face and at the same time, made her speechless.

Pearl and Diamond laughed under their breath and walked over to Platina and her blossom pokemon who was in its Overcoat form.

"Wow, Missy! It really suits you!" Pearl exclaimed as he awed at the elegant aura that emitted from the Berlitz heiress.

"Pearl's right. You look really… pretty," Diamond complimented with some bashful stammering at the last word.

Platina smiled radiantly and giggled. "Thank you both."

Blue grinned at the reaction the boys were giving to her female juniors. Then she shot a short glance as Silver whom she caught staring ever since they arrived. She inched closer to his side and waited with anticipation to what he would say.

Silver noticed the expression Blue was giving him. He knew all too well what it meant. With eyes not meeting hers, he spoke up in a calm voice "…It looks good."

Blue was not satisfied with the compliment, but hearing it from Silver was enough to nestle a warm feeling in her heart; that and the fact that they wore dark-themed yukatas, making them a matching couple.

But there was also another pair with almost the same shade of yukatas.

"Everyone is really dressed up, huh?" Red watched his fellow dexholders as he stood beside Yellow who nodded in response. The blonde lass fidgeted fingers, unable to say a single word. Her mind swirled with thoughts and emotions that left her completely and utterly silent.

Blue couldn't handle another second of the tensed air that Yellow was giving off. She quietly walked nearer to her and muttered inaudibly, "Just get on with it already" as she pushed the blonde towards Red who caught her safely in his arms.

"Yellow, you okay?" Red asked worriedly.

The Healer nodded her head rapidly but hid her face that was now the same shade as their clothes. Red held her shoulders as he tried to see if indeed she was fine, but Yellow gripped his clothes and buried her head, refusing to show the kind of expression and color she had at that moment.

Yellow could no longer move in that situation. If she did, Red would see her flushed face and she really didn't want that. No matter how dense the dexholder leader was, he would know what it meant. Every passing moment was suffocating. Her mind was in utter chaos.

Red was feeling the tension grow, but for the reason, it was still vague to him. Merely following his instincts, he placed a hand on the girl's head and patted gently. Yellow felt the tender gesture of his hand and calmed down a bit.

The atmosphere was getting lighter, but something else drew Red's attention. He noticed how soft her golden locks were and how warm she felt against him. He held the girl's hands, loosening her grip on his clothes until finally, Yellow released Red, but he didn't release her. His hands still held on to hers. The softness and warmth didn't make him let go.

The other dexholders stood back and feigned obliviousness to what was happening in front of them. Not that Red and Yellow remembered they were there because their minds seemed elsewhere.

Yellow gazed at their hands as a gentle smile curved on her face. Red's hands were firm and rough but warm in a way that kept her heart beating fast. She wished that the moment and feeling wouldn't end, but she knew it wouldn't last. "S-so uhm… should we head over to the main square now?"

Red snapped out of his daze and freed the blonde's hand, but still keeping a hold on the other, much to Yellow's surprise. "Oh, yeah. I almost forgot our reason for coming here for a sec." He chuckled in embarrassment.

"Well, let's get going!" Gold chimed from a few feet behind them, turning the duo's heads. Blue and the others walked back to them with satisfied looks. Yellow averted eye contact with everyone and just stared at her hand that remained in the boy's grip.

Blue giggled at part one of their operation hook-up. But then her mood dampened when she glimpsed at Sapphire who was standing by herself. It was obvious that Ruby was still missing in the picture to make the night truly memorable. Everyone else was paired up with someone. That included the inseparable Sinnoh trio who also noticed the empty presence around the girl.

Pearl thought of an idea and approached her. "Hey Sapphire! Want me to accompany you to the festival?"

Sapphire was about to speak when a familiar voice interrupted her.

"That isn't necessary."

Momo cheered happily and wagged her tail to welcome the approaching person. "Mincci!"

The dexholders turned their heads and saw a raven-haired boy with a Kirlia at his side, coming towards them. Gold and Sapphire recognized that it was Lapis. The Hoenn teen felt a beat skip her heart when she recalled her suspicions that he was Ruby.

"Sorry, I'm late." Lapis smiled as he made his way to her.

Sapphire remained quiet as she envisioned Ruby's image overlap with the boy standing in front of him. The height and build was the same. The only difference was the eyes that were strangely now in a light-blue color in comparison to the deep shade he had.

Sapphire looked at him puzzlingly. "Are ya wearing-?"

"-Contacts?" Lapis finished the question for her. "Yup. I say it suits me, doesn't it?"

He referred to the Celebi mask that covered the upper half of his head since he wasn't wearing his precious green headband. His yukata was green with ring-like patterns similar to his usual clothes. Azura was wearing the white ribbons in her hair that Momo gave, but it was accompanied by a silver obi around her waist with the long ends hanging down, almost touching the ground.

"So you did come, Flower boy." Gold eyed him with a piercing stare.

"Gold, do you know him?" Crystal inquired, feeling confused and left out like the remaining dexholders who haven't been introduced to Lapis.

"This here's Flower/stalker boy." Gold gestured to the masked teen.

"I'm not a stalker! And quit the flower boy nickname. My name is Lapis!"

"Is that so?" Gold leaned towards him and got a whiff of the aromatic scent of flora. "You're still Flower boy to me. And as for the stalker name, what does wild gal think?"

Everyone's attention turned to Sapphire and awaited her response. The Hoenn dexholder looked at her friends and then shifted her eyes in Lapis's direction. "H-He's a friend."

Gold was taken aback by the change in opinion of her junior. Growing even more suspicious of Lapis' intentions, he narrowed his eyes and glared at him. "I'm watching you, Flower boy!"

"I know." Lapis responded the breeder's glare with a wide unflinching smile, irritating the breeder further.

The next few minutes, Lapis got acquainted with the rest of the dexholders. They learned that he grew up in Goldenrod City, Johto with Ruby, and that now he and Sapphire were travelling together. And because of the mask, the other dexholders didn't question about the similarities he had with Ruby. Lucky for him, otherwise the whole evening will be full of questions.

All of them headed to the main square where the festival was being held. By that time, night had already settled in and stars filled the heavens like a glittering stream. Darkness flooded the outskirts but the historical city brimmed with light and life.

The streets were full of people dressed in beautifully designed yukatas that blended in with the spectrum of colors that decorated the place. Some wore masks of pokemon native to the region, complimenting the hue of their traditional garbs as well as making the occasion feel more festive.

Due to the circumstances, Lapis and the dexholders agreed that they'd meet up in three hours at the burned tower which was converted into a haunted house for the prestigious festival. They paired up into twos or threes, in Platina, Dia and Pearl's case.

Red and Yellow were first to venture deep into the streets. For some reason, their hands still interlocked with each other's. According to the dexholder leader, he just didn't want Yellow to trip or get lost in the large crowd. Well, that was his conclusion. Blue thought otherwise.

The Sinnoh trio took their time, checking one at a time, the different booths. It was Platina's first festival so Diamond and Pearl were really eager to show her around and give her the experience of a lifetime. They lead the way while livening the night with their signature manzai.

"Speaking of pokemon!" Pearl began.

"Speaking of pokemon…" Dia followed in.

"Pokefestivals are the best!"

"You don't say."

"Yup! There's a ton of stuff that you could do!"

"…And a ton of food that you can eat."

"There are fun games and people wear masks and pretty clothes…"

"…yeah, pretty." Dia glanced behind him.

"Dia? –I mean Diamond?" Pearl turned and saw his partner staring back at Platina's direction. Suspecting something amiss, he tapped Diamond on his shoulder and grinned. "What's pretty, Dia?"

"Those Takoyaki look pretty tasty…" the raven-haired dexholder pointed to a booth, beside Platina that was selling food shaped like balls.

"Can't you think of anything besides food?!" exclaimed the blonde boy and dealt a smack to the back of his comedy partner's head.

Platina giggled and kept on walking behind them, enjoying their jokes and antics as well enjoying the sights and sounds of the Ho-oh festival.

Gold surged through the crowd, eagerly looking for the best game to try out first. Crystal followed him around while scolding his childish exuberance while feeling kind of forgotten. But the next second, proved that she was wrong. The first thing that Gold got was a pair of fuzzy Azumarill ears that he hastily stuck on the blunette's head.

Now instead of a Suicune theme, she could pass the color motif off for an adorable aqua rabbit. Having satisfied with Crystal's sudden cuteness, she grabbed her wrist and explored the other booths while having the pleasure of showing off his girlfriend's new look. Crystal couldn't scold him or take off the blue rabbit ears, after seeing the thrilled expression on his face. She let herself be led by Gold as the number of people staring at her, increased.

Blue grinned happily watching her precious juniors having a blast. Silver knew where her attention was. It wasn't at the food, games or anything related to the festival. It was the faces of their companions enjoying themselves.

Silver held her hand, drawing Blue's attention back to him. "You don't have to keep an eye out for them. They're old enough to handle themselves."

"…Sounds like they're not the only who's grown up." Blue's radiant aqua eyes softened as she stared up at Silver. "I barely noticed how tall you are now. You're no longer that little boy whom I used to protect."

The redhead tightened his grip on Blue's hand. "And that means you don't have to take it upon yourself to be responsible of watching over those younger than you. I can take care of myself… andI want to be the one who will protect and watch over you." Silver raised his hand up to his face and softly gave the girl's hand a kiss.

Blue could hardly believe that the person who stood before her was once the lonely little boy she looked after. Silver had without a doubt, grown into someone strong and very capable, but even then, he remained an important person in Blue's life, perhaps an irreplaceable one in her heart. And with passing year, he proved more and more of that.

"Silver!" The mood was broken by a loud yell from the crowd. Gold's head bobbed in and out as he surged through the mass of people. He panted heavily when he came face to face with the redheaded boy.

Silver raised a brow, feeling curious as to why he called him whilst annoyed that he interrupted him and Blue. "…What?"

Gold raised his head and smirked, "I challenge you to a game of Extreme Fish Scooping!" The raven-haired boy declared, pointing at Silver and emitting a fiery aura.

"I'm kind of busy. And why would I want to join in that?" Silver instantly extinguished the competitive energy that the breeder had, and he became more irritated than ever, having heard Gold's purpose.

"I knew you'd say that." The raven-haired breeder was not giving up. He still had a plan up his sleeve. "If you want to know, one of the prizes consists of the Limited Edition Proteam Mega toy that you couldn't get last time. I remember how badly you wanted one. Heh. So, still not up for it?"

The annoyed expression on Silver's face vanished, instead a sense of interest flickered in his pale gray eyes. Blue giggled under her breath, seeing a remainder of the childishness in Silver. She nudged him from behind as a way of encouraging him to go for it.

Silver looked at Blue to make sure that it was really okay for him to go. A wink and a happy grin from the girl told him that it was more than okay, so he went along with Gold, leaving Blue and Crystal who walked up to her, sighing in exasperation.

"Boys…" The two females quoted in unison while shrugging their shoulders.

Blue shot a glimpse at her junior and smiled. "Nice ears…"

Crystal held down the tips and covered her face with it in embarrassment. Then she quickly shifted the subject elsewhere to avoid being reminded of the cutesy Azumarill ears "…So where's Sapphire?"
