A few days had passed since Josiah had last seen Ally and Spencer. But ever since then they had been blowing his phone up with text messages left and right trying to get him to reconsider his decision. While part of him wanted to use his blessings to help people and make the world a better place. There was a part of him that was worried. Worried about what would happen to the people he loved if they were to find out who he was. Now granted he could wear a mask and that would reduce the chances of anyone finding out who he was, but still there was a chance.
And that was a chance that he was not willing to take.
"Josiah!" he heard someone shout, making him look up to see Kiara standing beside him.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"I was asking what did you want?" She asked as he looked around at the menu. They were currently at the movies coming to see the new horror film, Shadows At the Lake. He wasn't a big horror movie buff, in fact he hated them. But she practically begged him to go and by beg, she hit him with a look that he just couldn't say no to. She had a habit of doing that and seemingly only with Josiah. Probably because she knew that with him, she was always gonna get her way.
"Let me get a large popcorn and a medium blue raspberry icee," he said as reached into his pocket pulling out a couple of twenty dollar bills to cover the fare. He tried his best to ignore the concerned look on her face. The cashier took the money and proceeded to go through with the transaction.
"Zay, are you okay?" Kiara said, looking at him with that same stare of concern while she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well for one, you were extremely quiet on the way here and then just a minute ago you were looking on with a blank stare like you have something on your mind. You know you can talk to me right?"
"Kiara, you don't have to worry about me. I'm fine, actually I'm better than fine. I'm here with my best friend, I'm great," he lied. He could tell that she didn't buy his lies because of the way that she sighed as he tried to play it off but she knew pressing it would only make matters worse.
"Thank you," he said to the worker as he grabbed their items.
"Lead the way Ms. Moore," he said as Kiara rolled her eyes and led him to the theater.
It was a calm day in the D-Town. Or at least, it was.
The skies that were once blue with clouds covering them had taken a deep dive. The skies were dark and covered with clouds filled with both thunder and lightning. Citizens walking along the streets of the city had looked up at the skies seeing its rapid change. There was a deep rumble in the sky. This made the citizens anxious as they looked up at the sky confused.
Suddenly there was a big bright flash of lightning that damn near blinded everyone that struck right in the center of Woodward Avenue. Once the smoke cleared and the lightning cleared, there stood a woman in an all black leather outfit with a sleeveless crop top on with a yellow and blue denim jacket over it.
"Let's have some fun shall we!" she said as lightning seemingly came from the guy striking her open palms as her eyes started to fill with the glowing sensation of electricity. She turned her head seeing a bus full of people. A smirk hit her face before she raised her palm, aiming at the bus as she let a bolt of lightning collide with the bus making a small explosion hit the engine of the bus, killing the driver and any passengers on the front end of the bus.
People started to scream and run out of fear for their lives as this woman began to cause chaos in the city.
It was a little bit later in the evening as the film that Josiah and Kiara had traveled to go see had ended as they walked out into the lobby. From the lobby, they could see there was a whole bunch of commotion coming from outside. Zay was about to run outside and see what was going on but felt Kiara grip his wrist in fear. He turned to her and looked down at her tight grip on his wrist and saw the fear appear on her face.
He was about to say something but was interrupted when both of their phones rang, making them both reach into their pockets with their free hands.
"Hello?" they both said simultaneously answering their separate phone calls.
"Josiah, are you okay?" Zay heard his mom say on the other end.
"Yeah, I'm fine. What's going on?"
"I don't know but you and Kiara need to hurry up and get home. It's not safe."
"Alright, we'll be home in a little bit. Bye mom."
"Bye son, be safe. I love you." She said before she hung up the phone. Josiah turned his head seeing Kiara just wrapped up on her phone call.
"My dad just said there's a metahuman on the loose in the city," Kiara said as Josiah frowned. Immediately he thought about his Uncle Eddie. He was gonna be a cop on the front lines dealing with the metahuman. This metahuman was too much to handle for them. They didn't have the power to deal with someone of this magnitude. But he did. And he had to do something about it.
"Kiara, get to safety. I'm gonna try to go see if there's anyone who needs help," Zay said as he tried to gently pull himself from her grip.
"Zay no!"
"Kiara, I gotta try," he said as he ripped himself from her grasp and jogged out of the door leaving her there in fear.
"Josiah!" she shouted out in fear as she ran out the door looking for him but by the time she reached the doors, he was already gone. She ran down the sidewalks in the opposite direction that everyone was running in.
Mayhem. That was one word that could describe everything that was going on. This meta stood in the center of the street still using her powers to wreak havoc and mayhem on everyone. There was fire and debris everywhere. Cops were behind their cars using them to try to shield themselves from her powers. Among those cops stood Detective Eddie Davis who wore a bullet-proof vest as he had his service pistol in his grasp.
"We got civilians on that bus! We need to try to get them to safety!" Eddie shouted at one of the SWAT members who kneeled by his side.
Out of nowhere, Eddie felt a gush of wind and heard a crackle of electricity. He didn't really see anything but saw a green and black blur brush past him.
Josiah came running in with gold streaks of lightning following behind him as he was dressed in a pair of "Triple Black" Retro 1s with a pair of black joggers and a green hoodie with a green ski mask. He was taking advantage of the speed coursing through his veins. He rushed past the meta and made his way towards the bus. He put his hands on the door frames of the bus that was on fire earlier.
He pushed the frames open and rushed onto the bus. And one-by-one he was able to rush onto the bus and grab everyone one by one.
"What the hell?!" Eddie questioned as he saw a blur moving with yellow lightning. This meta turned and saw the bright yellow lightning seemingly going back and forth from the sidewalk to the bus. She raised her hand in the air forming a ball of ice before she launched it at his feet.
Josiah didn't see that ball of ice coming and the impact that collided with his feet forced him up into the air grunting. He cradled the little baby that was in his grasp trying to make sure that it wasn't harmed. When he hit the ground, he fell onto his back making him grunt.
"Shit," he cursed as he vibrated his vocal cords trying to hide his voice. He groaned as he rose up to his feet while the mother of the child came running over to him. He gently handed the baby boy off to the mother as he turned back to the meta.
"I'm gonna give you one chance, sparky, stand down or get your ass handed to you," he said as he tried to shake away the pain from earlier.
"The only one that's gonna get their ass handed to them is you!" she said as she formed two miniature tornadoes in the palm of her hands and let them loose aiming them towards him. Josiah saw them coming and dodged them before going at her with a purpose. He was racing towards her but noticed that the tornadoes were coming for innocent people along the sidewalk.
He changed his trajectory and raced towards the people moving them to safety.
This weather meta threw a few lightning bolts at Josiah but Zay used his speed to try and duck them. She threw one big bolt of lightning that came directly for Zay. Zay ran towards the lightning bolt and quickly ducked under it and marched towards her, clocking her with a hard left and a right before dropping him with a hard shot to the jaw.
Zay turned his head looking at the stray lightning bolt that aimed for him watching as his uncle stood up directly in the path of the lightning bolt.
"No!" Josiah shouted as he saw a bolt of stray lightning hit his uncle in the chest making him groan out in pain as he flew back into a piece of debris with an exposed rod. Josiah watched in horror as the exposed rod pierced through his skin and pierced his abdomen. Zay looked on in horror as he watched blood seep from his wound.
Zay bolted over to his uncle seeing blood seep from the corners of his mouth. He ripped off the ski mask
"No, no, no, no, no. Stay with me, stay with me Uncle Eddie. Just stay with me."
"Someone call an ambulance!" Zay shouted this time, vibrating his vocal cords before going back to his normal tone of voice. He felt his uncle grab a hold of his hand and squeeze it.
"Z-zay, I'm so proud of you. You're so strong and so smart. You're the best man that I've ever known. You can give this city. You can give this world hope. You can save everyone," Eddie said as the waterworks started to flow from his eyes.
"I love you Uncle Eddie," Josiah said, choked up as he tried to bite back his tears.
"I love you too kid," Eddie said as he gave his hand a tight squeeze before the grip loosened as Eddie closed his eyes and drew his final breath.
"Uncle Eddie!" Josiah heard, making him turn his head to see Kiara looking on with a frown on her face. Zay stood up and whipped away his tears before he bolted off faster than he had ever ran before. He just needed to get away from everyone and anyone. He just needed to run and let go. Let go of his anger. Let go of his emotions.
As he ran, he couldn't hold back the tears letting them fall as he let out a scream of anger.
A week had passed since Josiah had lost his uncle due to the metahuman that had attacked the city and now it was time for him to pay his respects. The family had a nice funeral in which they were able to bury him and put him to rest. There was a part of him that felt like he put him in the ground and he needed to atone for his sins. He needed to make sure that he honored his uncle's wishes.
Zay looked down at his uncle's white marble tombstone as Kiara walked towards him. She placed a hand on his shoulder giving it a gentle squeeze.
He turned his head seeing her. She could see the tears in his eyes, seeing the pain in his orbs. Out of instinct, she wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace, letting the waterworks go in her arms. For the past few days, he had tried to keep a straight face and be strong for everyone. He couldn't be weak and allow himself to deal with the loss but in her arms, he could. In her arms, he could let loose and feel vulnerable.
"It's okay Zay. It's okay I got you," she said as a tear slid down her cheeks.
He stood weeping as he let out all the anger that had been in his soul for the past few days.
From a distance stood his mom and his sister looking at him with concern on their faces.
An hour had passed and Josiah still stood in front of the grave staring at it with a frown on his face. He had asked Kiara, Iris and his mom to leave him and let him be alone for a little bit. Or at least, he just needed to get them away from him so he could meet with Spencer. Ally was currently on a trip to New York to visit family.
"Listen man, I'm sorry about your uncle. If there's anything I can do to make you feel-"
"I'll do it."
"What?"
"I'll do it. I'll help you take down the metas. But first, I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"I need you to find out who killed my uncle."
"Why?"
"Just do it. Let me worry about why."
Josiah said he turned to face Spencer looking with a frown on his face.
"Okay."
"We'll get started tomorrow. What happened to my uncle can't happen to anyone else. I won't let it happen to anyone, anytime soon. I was blessed with this speed for a reason. And I believe that reason was to help people. He died believing that. I have to honor him. And this is how I plan to do so."
"Okay, we'll save the city. Together, I promise," Spencer said as he held out a hand for handshake. Josiah simply nodded and took his hand into his, giving him a handshake.
So I went back and changed the ending of Chapter 1 which correlates with this chapter. I know it probably seems rushed and for that, I apologize. I hope you guys like it, let me know what you think with a review or just message me and let me know.
Also, I don't really care for putting dates in chapters but just so that it's not confusing when Uncle Eddie died it was May 27th. The funeral took place a week after that on June 3rd. The next chapter takes place on June 6th, 2018 which is Josiah's birthday. I know it's kinda hard to really celebrate and be excited for a birthday 3 days after you bury your uncle but just tune in, it makes for an interesting story dynamic, just tune in and see it for yourself. I promise it won't be boring.
