Sorry for the hold up! My laptop was taken in for fixing and I am now using my mother's old laptop. I hope you won't hate me for this, but the next chapter or so will be in Hikaru's POV. For those of you who may be wondering about the identity of this new guy, you will need to keep guessing. For the record, he is NOT her father! I do not own OHSHC.
I glared at the guy, seeing Sunny throw herself into his arms. I have never hated someone so incredibly quickly. Who was this guy? Hugging Sunlight?! The nerve of some people!
Whenever she would say hello to someone, she would always be kind of nervous. She would reach a hand out, only to remember that we didn't really shake hands here, and do a little wave. Somehow in the process her bangs would slip out from behind her ear, getting in her face, and then she would artfully brush it back behind her ear with a breathtakingly shy smile.
But this was different. She wouldn't show this sort of affection with just anyone, so it was obvious that she must know him. Koaru turned to see what I was looking at, his eyes wide when he spotted them. After that everyone turned to see what caught our attention. Kyoya was the first one of us to react.
"Oh," he said with disinterest, "I was wondering when he would show up. It looks as if he's finally arrived, Haruhi." She nodded, walking away from the group, towards them, the rest following. I didn't want to go over to him, but I needed to see Sunny. I followed after them, lagging behind a little.
We stood there for a few minutes, the two of them not noticing us until Kyoya cleared his throat, interrupting their embrace. I mentally thanked him for breaking up their little meeting. Sunny looked a little surprised to see us, and when she finally looked at me, her face looked confused, probably wondering why I had a scowl on my face.
I broke my eyes away first, turning to look at the guy instead. He was a few inches shorter than Mori-senpai and had dark brown hair, his eyes were a light blue. And I could see that he was shivering under his jacket, obvious unaccustomed to the weather. Sunny turned to see him shivering too, unwrapping the scarf around her neck, a worried look in her eyes as she re-wrapped it around his neck. If it was at all possible, my anger for him deepened.
I glared at him from the corner of my eye, which was hard since Sunny's back was to me and blocking my view of him. My annoyance with his presence made the ride seem longer. Sunny talked with such joy and wonder in her voice, but it soon began to wane. Her body sank back into the limo seat, her breath evening out. I was grateful for her sudden need of sleep, it kept her from talking to him. The driver made a sharp turn, making Sunny slide over to the left, right onto my lap.
Instinctively, I reached out to keep her from falling onto the limo's floor. I was stunned at this sudden turn of events. The guy, he didn't have any anger in his eyes, but they were filled with amusement, as if this was something that deserved to be laughed at. He scooted over to us and positioned Sunny's body, so that she would be more comfortable, then rearranged my arms more securely on her.
I could feel the tips of my ears burn up, one arm was under her head, acting as a cushion, the other at her waist, keeping her in place. Who exactly was this guy? Who in their right mind made someone else put their hands on a girl? But even then I didn't dare move my arms away, not wanting to disturb her. I bite down on the inside of my cheek to keep from smiling, not wanting them all to know the smugness I was feeling at the moment. Of the two directions that she could have fallen towards, I was thankful that I chose to sit on the left side of her. It was pure dumb luck, but I would like to think of it as a mere happy coincidence.
I drowned out whatever conversation that was going on around me, lightly swirling my left thumb on her cheek. Once the limo stopped, I kept a firm grip on her, not wanting the guy to even reach for her. I slowly eased her body up, until her head came to my shoulder. I moved my right arm, having it rest under her knees supporting her light weight against myself. I impatiently motioned for the guy to open the door with my head, sliding out the door after him. After Haruhi got out, we began going up the stairs towards their apartment. I caught the scent of her shampoo as I climbed the steps, finding myself entranced by the smell of plain soap.
It only occurred to me that the guy was carrying his bag up with us. What the heck was he planning on doing? Was he renting a room in the same building? Haruhi opened the door, not unlocking it. Ranka must have arrived home early.
"Dad," she called out, slipping off her shoes, "we're back." Finally. Someone who would be able to handle the situation. He would obviously attack this guy and kick him out.
He came out of the sitting room. "What is it?" he asked. His footsteps stopped, mouth open in shock. I took myself and Sunny a few steps away from him, motioning for Kaoru to do the same, preparing for Ranka's assault. But I was sadly disappointed. "A.J.!" He rushed forward, crushing the guy in what I thought would be a choke hold, but it was actually a hug.
I don't remember much about that night, too angry with the world to keep up with the chain of events. After setting down Sunny in her room, unzipping and taking off her boots so she would sleep more soundly or as soundly as possible with her still wearing skinny jeans and a tight turtleneck, I saw a picture on her desk. At closer examination I saw two couples with a boy about ten years old, obviously this A.J. person, and then there was a little blonde girl no more then five or six.
She was so much smaller back then, I found it strange at not seeing any blue highlights in her halo blonde hair. I reached a hand into my coat pocket, feeling the wrapped boxes there. I pulled out the one with Santa Claus on it, Kaoru's gift for Sunny. I debated reaching for mine, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I instead reached reach out towards Sunny, pulling out all the bobby pins from her hair and smoothed it out. I pulled myself away after having my fingers in her hair for too long. I walked out of there, tugging Kaoru out after saying our goodbyes.
Are there any students out there who will be a part of the class of 2014 somewhere in the world? A few friends of mine will be graduating and some have only one year left in school before continuing on with another part of their lives.
