The courtship between Caspian and Susan began cautiously, with Caspian taking note of everything he said and every move he made. he was scared if he so much as tripped up slightly, Mr. Pevensie, Peter, Edmund, Ivar, Mr. Bedwell, and maybe even Mr. Andersen would show him why he should not trip up.
"Where are you planning on taking my sister today, Caspian?"
"I let her decide that, Peter."
"Why is that?"
"I don't know the countryside of this land as well as I'd like, but she does. In a way, she taking me to explore Narnia."
"Peter, we have a problem."
"Kayla! What are you doing here so early?"
"As I said, we have a problem."
"What is it?"
"Lord Balvenos decided to ride to Dancing Lawn, demanding everything I stole from his castle. Apparently, the White Witch's castle sits on his land."
"But that land is yours by birthright. Jadis' nephew was our great-grandfather."
"Exactly, and that was what I told him, but he demands proof of that."
"Wait, Caspian. At Aslan's how, after the incident with the wolf and the hag, what happened to the wand?"
"Professor Cornelius has it in safekeeping."
"He needs to give it to Kayla. It'll be kept better at Dancing Lawn than here in the citadel."
Kayla headed up to Cornelius' study, and closed the door behind her.
"Lady Kayla, what can I do for you?"
"You have something in your possession, that would be better kept at Dancing Lawn than here."
"I know what you speak of, though I won't say what it is because Telmarine lords are listening at the door."
Kayla spun her wrist around and conjured up a spider, and sent it through the crack between the door and the floor. Once it was in the hallway, it grew enormous, reminiscent of Ungoliant. The Telmarine lords ran off, and the spider disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
"I wouldn't worry about them now."
Cornelius handed her the wand wrapped in a cloth to look like a dagger. Kayla made haste back to Dancing Lawn as fast as she could, where Lord Balvenos was waiting for her.
"Lady Kayla."
"Get off of my land, Balvenos."
"I came to get what rightly belongs to me."
"You don't have the power nor the blood to wield this."
Kayla took the wand out of the cloth and pointed it at Balvenos, and he froze up in fear.
"Is everything alright, Kayla?"
"Yes, everything is fine, Ivar. I'm just deciding on whether or not I should turn Lord Balvenos to stone."
Once Lord Balvenos heard that, he got on his horse and rode back to the Telmarine citadel.
"You took on a chance on that one, min elskede."
"It really all is just a game of thrones, Ivar."
"Is that Jadis' wand?"
"Yes."
"Is that what Lord Balvenos wanted?"
"No, he wanted everything we took from Jadis' castle. He doesn't know about this wand, and I want to keep it that way."
"Susan is taking Caspian to the Marshlands, and I haven't been up there in a long time myself. Care to join me?"
"Of course. Let me put this wand in a safe spot."
Kayla put the wand in the cellar of her carriage house, and kept the cellar door well hidden. She and Ivar then rode off to the Marshlands, which ended up being an overnight journey.
"We can camp here for the night."
"Ivar, this is where Aslan's first camp was, where the Stone Table originally was."
"I didn't even realize that."
"It's alright. I only recognised certain trees."
"This spot doesn't hold anything for you does it?"
"Why would it?"
"This is where Aslan was killed."
"And he rose again the next day."
"But that night, you were having an immense panic attack."
"I threw up so much that I passed out."
"I know, I was the one who found you and brought you back to camp. I had the nymphs clean you up."
"I was an emotional wreck that night."
"You had every right to be an emotional wreck that night."
After a long talk, the two eventually fell asleep. Kayla rose with the dawn the next morning. She walked through the woods like she did every morning. A nymph walked up to her and led her to the great river, where the nymph pushed Kayla in. Kayla floated down to the bottom, where she was greeted by Calypso's corpse.
"Calypso. I don't know what else to say except good morning."
"You are me now, sweet child. And I see you have found love."
"I have."
"Your marriage will be the first marriage in this world that is mainly of love, but is also the heirs of two thrones uniting. Your ancestor the Triple Goddess was my sister. She found love in her marriage, and I did not."
"She found love to a point, Giagia. I'm sorry you didn't."
"Don't be, sweet child. The result was Etain, and she inherited everything, the first one to do so. The first one to find love in her marriage."
"What am I down here for?"
"You have had your ascensions, the supernatural realm is yours. But I am telling you f the one thing that every deity wishes."
"What is it?"
"The strong urge to be mortal. Every deity wishes it."
"Every deity except the one I worship, and in my opinion, is the one true God. Strike me down for that if you wish, but I stand by my words."
"I know, sweet girl, as did every Terebinthian queen before you, especially Micheáilín. She was more of her father's daughter than her mother's."
Kayla knew her ancestor was right. Kayla had always been wishing that she never had any supernatural burdens. That she could either die a slow or quick death, like a true human should.
"Domhnall was in truth raped by the Triple Goddess. He only grew to love her because he didn't know anything else. I've had marriage proposals thrown at me since the first time we came back. But I have only said yes to Ivar, and no, not to unite the thrones of Ettinsmoor and Terebinthia, that has already been done. He proposed to me out of love, and I said yes out of love."
"Oh, my little lovely, how I envy you."
"You didn't marry for love, Calypso, but you were never violated either. You only swore vengeance on the vampires because it was painful to birth one. Your road of vengeance stopped when your spirit passed on to Etain. I have my own road to run."
Kayla swam back to the surface, and by the time she was out of the water, Ivar was still in a heavy sleep. She was not even dripping wet. She relit the fire and the new feel of warmth woke Ivar up.
"How long have you been awake, Kayla?"
"A little while."
"I think you've been awake longer than that.'
"Maybe I have."
Ivar did not bother to ask her what she meant, he just started to get ready for the rest of their journey to the Marshlands.
