The two spent the rest of the day sitting on the couch in their study, thinking about how to move forward.
"You're sure you don't mind if I'm friends with David?" Regina asked at one point during the conversation.
"No. You guys being friends is good. I'd rather that than you being enemies I guess."
"Ok. It's been nice having someone to run with. We don't really talk about much except you and Henry. He's really happy that we're all enjoying being together."
"I love you, Regina. I really, really do. I want us to be better, to be happy again."
Regina reached her hand over to Emma's and covered the pale one with her own. Emma's fingers were cold, as they often were. For some reason Emma's body temperature seemed to run a degree or two cooler than Regina's and Emma had missed Regina being beside her to keep her warm.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"What's that, dear?"
"Well, it's more of a favor, I guess."
"Ok." Regina waited for Emma to tell her what it was.
"Can we get a different bed?"
Regina raised her eyebrow at the request but nodded. "Yes, that should be fine."
"I just…you know…"
"I understand, Emma. Really, I do, you don't have to express it any further. I want our life together to be pleasant and if that makes it easier, then that's ok."
"Can we get a king size bed?"
Regina chuckled lightly. "Why is that, dear?"
"I've always liked my bed to be a lot bigger than me, like I want to feel like I can fall into it and it's much like being a kid and crawling into bed."
Regina shook her head and laughed harder at Emma's explanation, to which Emma blushed and lowered her head looking slightly embarrassed.
"Emma," Regina started, lifting Emma's chin so that she was looking into her eyes. "I laughed because you're cute, not to mock you, ok? Your occasional child-like tendencies are one of the major reasons I fell in love with you so don't feel ashamed. I enjoy it." Emma nodded and gave her a small smile.
Her smile turned, too easily, into a slight frown. She let out an exasperated sigh and when Regina gave her a questioning look, she tried to explain. "This feels awkward. I don't want it to be, I want us to just be us again."
"Me too, Emma. But I don't know what we can do to make us be normal again. I don't know how, when the only thing I can think to do is something you wouldn't want."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I think that for us to be us again, we have to make love. I know that right now that's an issue for us, but sometimes you just have to rip off the bandaid."
"Kind of like stabbing the adrenalin into your heart, no anesthesia."
"Right."
Emma nodded. She went to Regina's desk to grab their laptop. She logged in and was greeted by a picture of the two of them with Henry in the middle. They were all smiling widely and looked like nothing could be better about their lives. She looked up a quick delivery furniture store and the women ordered a bed frame, king size mattress and box spring and a set of deep purple satin sheets. They put it on a rush and they were set for delivery for the next day.
Emma decided that there was no better way to go than to just go. After she moved the laptop back to the desk, she sauntered over to Regina, standing in front of her until the other woman looked up. Emma straddled Regina's legs, placing her knees on the couch on either side of the toned thighs. Pale hands cupped tan cheeks and she pressed her lips to her wife's. The kiss began slowly, burning the two women who wanted each other more than they had let themselves admit since the truth came out. Regina broke the kiss and kissed down Emma's neck and the exposed part of her chest at the top of her shirt.
"No anesthesia?" Regina asked.
"No anesthesia," Emma replied.
Regina easily flipped them so Emma was laying on the couch and they made love the best they could, and though it wasn't like it usually was for them, it wasn't as fiery or electric, they both could still feel the passion and the love. They knew that the rest would come back with time.
Across town, while Regina and Emma were making up, David was arriving home from work to find Snow and Henry hanging out, watching movies on the couch.
"Hey guys. Did we decide what time you're going home Henry?" David asked, walking into the sitting area where the TV was.
"I was hoping I could go soon. I could just leave my bike here if you want to drive me since it's raining."
"Ok, Henry. We can do that."
"Do you think mom and ma are done working things out?"
"I hope so, Henry. I'm sure everything will be fine."
"What's wrong with Emma and Regina?"
David looked at Snow and gave her a warning look. "We'll talk about it later."
Snow nodded and Henry just shrugged. He got up to get his coat and headed to the door to wait for David to take him home. Snow kissed her husband goodbye and went to the kitchen to start dinner, thinking of how strange that interaction was.
David walked Henry to the door when they got to the mansion and knocked, just in case. He didn't want to interrupt anything. After a couple of minutes, Regina and Emma opened the door together looking disheveled and quite ruffled.
"Moms, that is seriously disgusting, you really shouldn't open the door like that, the whole world will end up knowing you just had sex," Henry blurted.
Regina and Emma looked at each other, chocolate eyes were wide and green were shining with humor. Both women ended up laughing boisterously. David clapped Henry on the shoulder and asked him to go up to his room for a few minutes because he had to talk to Emma and Regina.
"Would you guys mind coming outside? I just don't want him to overhear anything," he asked, once Henry walked up the stairs. Both women nodded and stepped outside in their bare feet, Regina pulling the door closed behind them. "I know it isn't technically my business, but you guys made up then?"
Regina looked to Emma for how they should respond.
"Yes, we did, or we're trying really hard to," Emma allowed.
"Good, good. You guys are good for each other."
"Anyway, you wanted to talk, dad?"
"Yeah. Uh… I'm going to need to tell your mom."
"No! You can't! Dad, come on, it's just going to make things worse for us all."
"For a while, yes. But you know if I don't say anything and it comes out later then it's going to be even worse for all of us than if I just tell her now."
"But…but I can't handle her hating Regina right now."
"I know, Em. I'm sorry. I wish that it could go another way."
"Regina, why aren't you saying anything?" Emma asked her wife.
Regina shrugged. "I just think that maybe your father is right. It's going to be worse the later she hears it, and by then it wouldn't just be your dad and me that she would be mad at, she'd be mad at you, too, because you knew and didn't tell her."
"Right. Damn…Fuck! Why can't things be easy for just five seconds? I swear! This life is too complicated."
"I'm sorry, Emma. I really don't want to tell her, but that would just cause more pain in the long run."
"Alright, alright," Emma resigned, hugging her father. After they hugged he instinctually reached for Regina and hugged her, too. "Good luck."
"Yeah, uh… I'll let you know how it goes. Got a couch I can sleep on if I need it?"
"Of course. Give us a call later."
After David left, the women went inside and Henry, like the curious boy he was, was back to standing at the bottom of the stairs.
"What was that about?" he asked.
"I'm sure you'll hear in due time, dear."
"So why can't you guys tell me now so that I can hear it from my moms?"
Regina looked at Emma and the blonde shrugged. Regina knew it would be her decision to tell their son if they were going to, because she was the one responsible for the issue. She directed them all to the dining room table and sat down across from Henry and next to Emma.
"Sweetheart, you know how I told you that sometimes adults make mistakes that we come to regret very much?" Henry nodded. "Well, before the curse was broken your grandfather and I made a very adult mistake together and we didn't tell anyone after the curse broke because we didn't want anyone to get hurt."
"God, gross! You guys had sex? Mom, that's seriously disgusting," Henry scoffed. Regina hung her head just slightly so he couldn't see her lip quiver, but he would still be able to see the hurt in her eyes. The action made him realize how hurtful his response was and he backtracked. "Oh, mom, no, not like that. I'm not mad at you or anything. It's just, you know, it's one thing to come across the knowledge that your parents have sex, another thing when you think about your parents having sex with anyone else."
Regina looked up at him in shock. Could he really be this smart and this forgiving? She really had raised him very well, and since Emma had been around, he had only gotten kinder and funnier. "You are such a good boy, Henry," Regina allowed, reaching over to run the tips of her fingers in his hair behind his ear. He ducked out of the touch.
"Come on, mom, you're messing up my hair. I'm supposed to go hang with Hansel, Gretel and Grace. Also, I'm not a boy anymore, I'm almost a man."
Emma burst into a fit of laughter and Regina smiled, letting her lips seal in the laugh that threatened to break through. "That's right, dear, you are almost a man. Go have fun with your friends, and be quiet if we're sleeping, I expect David will be needing the guest room tonight.
When David got home, Snow jumped on him before he could even take off his coat.
"What are they having problems with?" she asked curiously.
"Can we at least sit down?" he asked. He figured Snow would assume he was tired and not that he wanted to make sure she was sitting when she got the news that would likely devastate her. He took a seat at the dinner table and she sat across from him.
"Remember how at dinner the other night, Emma found out that Graham wasn't the only person that Regina had slept with in Storybrooke?"
"Yes." Snow nodded, understanding why it would have upset her daughter.
"Well, Emma wasn't pleased to find out who the other person was."
"I see." Snow waited a minute to let David continue, but when he didn't, she prompted him. "Well? Who was it? It was before the curse ended, right? Gosh I bet that was a disgusting realization to wake up from the curse to, the knowledge that he'd slept with the Evil Queen?"
She waited for him to answer, but he didn't so she prompted him again.
"Well then, who was it?" Snow asked again, sounding almost annoyed that he hadn't told her yet. She really had no clue what was coming.
"Um…she uh…she slept with David Nolan."
Snow sat a minute, gaping at him for what seemed like hours but was really only a few minutes. Finally, after the excruciating silence, she spoke. "You? You slept with Regina?" She tried not to let her voice break. She tried to keep a strong exterior while she was breaking on the inside, but she wasn't having much success at doing so.
"It was shortly after Kathryn was found after what we thought was her death. Regina was there and I helped her when her car battery died, helped her with her groceries and she offered to have me over for dinner since Henry wasn't going to be home for dinner and we probably had too much wine. I had just been rejected and she was there and I was sad, and she seemed sad too. We were cursed, Snow. You slept with Whale."
"But I told you about Whale."
David looked at her guiltily. "I know, I understand that keeping it from you was wrong. But honestly, I just thought you would be so upset about the whom that you'd ignore the when. I didn't want to have just found you and Emma just to lose you again. And I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to think that my having slept with her was any part of the reason for my agreeing that she should be allowed to live."
"If that wasn't why you thought she should be able to live, then why?"
"Because of Henry. The kid had enough confusion realizing that it was all true, he'd just been brought out of the sleeping curse and our daughter wanted to make sure her son's other mom was able to live so that when Henry wanted her again, she'd be alive. Emma deserved our support. After 28 years of not having her parents, she deserved our support."
"She didn't have us because of Regina!"
"Snow, you know that we could have chosen to keep her with us."
"She would have been cursed, too!"
"I know, I really do. I'm just saying what Emma herself has said."
"You're defending Regina!"
"I'm not! And if I was, she's our daughter-in-law now, Snow. We have to accept that she's part of our family. She's good to Emma and for Emma. She's carrying our grandchild, Snow."
"I need you to go, David," Snow whispered after a long silence.
"If that's what you want, ok. I'll be waiting for you when you're ready, but I won't push you."
"Emma forgave Regina?"
"Yeah. They're each other's True Love; they're expecting a child. Of course she forgave her." David's words were full of hope that Snow would forgive him the way that Emma forgave Regina. Snow nodded and moved to sit on the couch while David packed a bag with toiletries and a few days of clothing. After he walked out of the door, she burst into tears on the couch.
David drove back to Regina and Emma's and stood in the rain for several minutes before knocking on the door of the mansion. It was fairly late and he assumed that they were probably settling down for the night. Regina opened the door dressed in a silk pajama set that consisted of pants and a long sleeve, button-up shirt. She motioned for him to come inside and she stepped down the hall before reappearing with a heavy gray towel. David noticed that her skin was glowing and he was reminded of when Snow was pregnant how she just radiated joy.
"Thank you," he said, taking the towel from her hand. She nodded and took his bag while he dried his face and hair. She hung his coat on the coat rack and let him take off his boots before leading him upstairs.
"I figured you'd be needing the guest room so I washed the sheets for you. There's a bathroom in here that you can use, fresh towels are in the linen closet next to the shower," she pointed to one of the two doors inside of the guest bedroom. "You can either use the top two drawers for your clothes or you can hang them in the closet," she added, pointing to the second door in the bedroom.
"Your guest room has it's own bathroom? Why didn't you give Henry this room?" he asked.
"I didn't want him to draw himself a bath and drown as a kid. I worried too much, I suppose. Although, come to think of it I may give him this room before the baby comes and have the baby in his room since it's closer to mine and Emma's room."
He nodded. "Thanks, I appreciate this, Regina, I really do."
"Of course. Emma's sleeping or I'm sure she'd want to say good night. I hope you rest well, David." She pulled the door shut behind her as she walked back to her bedroom. She cracked it open and stood for several minutes, watching Emma sleeping on the bed. The blonde hadn't wanted to sleep in the bed, so she had tried to lay down on the floor to sleep. Regina laid down on the floor next to her, saying that if Emma wasn't going to sleep in a bed then Regina wouldn't either. That upset Emma since Regina was pregnant, but Regina insisted that if Emma slept on the floor, she was too. That resulted in both women sleeping in the bed. The blonde had fallen asleep a lot easier than Regina.
Regina realized she wouldn't be able to sleep yet, so she padded downstairs and turned on the stove to heat some milk. She had been doing this a lot lately when she couldn't sleep, having warm milk with sweetened vanilla before bed. She looked up when she heard footsteps and saw David, freshly showered. When he was in sleeping clothes, relaxed and not concentrating, it was easy for her to see that he was the parent that Emma's genes favored. The lighter hair and the strong nose, the way being charming came naturally to him, like it was part of his very make-up; Emma was a lot like her father. She smiled at him and asked if he wanted some of what she was having. After she told him what it was, he agreed to try it.
"Do you want to talk, David?"
"I don't know. It's stupid that talking to you should feel like a betrayal to Snow, because I don't see it that way. You're my friend, I don't have many of those and it's nice to have one."
"What do you mean you don't have many friends? Everybody in town likes you."
"Yes, everybody likes me, because of Snow. The dwarves hated me at first, they thought I was using Snow, and they never really became friends with me, they became our supporters, our followers. Everyone in town looks at us as their leaders, which is fine, but as you know, leading people doesn't necessarily mean you're friends with them." She nodded.
"Well, I'm still your friend as long as you'll have me, I don't have many, either."
He let the kitchen fall into a comfortable silence while she finished making their drinks. She passed him a mug full of the warm beverage and he sipped it.
"This is really good, Regina."
She smiled. "Thank you. I used to make this for Henry as a kid when he couldn't sleep, then before our wedding I began craving it, so I've had it many nights since then."
"Pregnancy suits you. You look very happy, Regina."
"I'm working on it. Emma is an incredible person and I'm not sure how I would have reacted were the situation reversed. But she's the most wonderful person I know. We're working on it."
"Do you want to talk about it more?"
"I don't know. It's easier to talk about these things with you because you're a man. Well, and because you know the situation, but you're still her dad."
"I'm here though, if you decide to talk about it."
"For now let's just leave it at, we're trying to get back to what we had, but it'll be hard. It's just not the same."
David nodded. "That's what I'm afraid of, too."
"Snow will forgive you. I promise, if there is anything I know about Snow White, she is overly forgiving and she loves you with everything she is. It may take some time, but she'll move on."
"Thanks, Regina." He moved the hand that wasn't holding his drink around Regina's shoulder, resting his arm on her shoulders and his hand on her arm, squeezing her in a half hug. The two stood there like that for several minutes before Regina finally began to feel tired and they said their goodnights. She crawled into bed next to her wife and heard him padding into the guest room to sleep.
