Chapter Two: The Father She Never Wanted

KARAKURA TOWN - URAHARA SHOP
Kenpachi Zaraki strode up to the door of Urahara's shop. He cast a glance behind him to ensure Shirahime and her daughter were still standing with Ikkaku and Yumi. He wasn't letting his child and her mother anywhere near that useless man that hated them so much.
"Well, Kenpachi Zaraki," Urahara greeted. "Get lost?"
"No," he said.
"Well, let me put it this way, get lost!"
"Shut the hell up!"
Tessai looked over.
"Really, Kisuke, must you?" Tessai asked.
"Stay out of this," Kisuke said.
Kenpachi looked to Tessai. "Is she here?"
"No," he answered. "But I know where she was stopping by. Maybe she got held up. Here's the address." He handed him a slip of paper.
"Thanks. I'll be going now," Kenpachi said. "Not because it's what you want, loser," he said, looking at Kisuke, "but because my kid is hungry. And she'd like to see her grandmother. I'm sure the whole family thing eludes you."
"Wait a minute." They looked to Shirahime standing in the doorway.
"Get out!" Kisuke screamed.
"Go spend some time alone in your room," she said. "It's probably your only way of having fun lately, isn't it?"
Kenpachi laughed.
"You little -," Kisuke began.
A blast of ice knocked him backwards. Kosetsu floated in the air. Though he was a snow dragon, he often appeared as ice.
"Leave mama alone."
Kisuke and Tessai wondered who said that.
Tessai looked at Kosetsu and understood.
Shirahime looked to Tessai and asked, "Would you and the children like to join us? Only if you want to."
"No," Kisuke said, "they wouldn't."
"I didn't ask you," she said. "Tessai, I'll be waiting outside."
"I'll go get them," Tessai said.

KARAKURA TOWN - URAHARA SHOP - BACKYARD
Tessai went outside to see Ururu and Jinta.
"Do you two want to go out for lunch?" he asked.
"With the stupid princess?" Jinta asked.
"Hey!" Ururu exclaimed and slapped him.
Jinta stared at her. Sure, he was mean to her, but she rarely fought back. And she never hit first.
"Then maybe just you, Ururu?" Tessai asked.
"Would it be okay?" she asked.
"She asked if you two wanted to come. Jinta, you can stay here."
"No way," he said. "If she's going to slack off, so am I."

KARAKURA TOWN - LOCAL CAFÉ
What Soi Fon said began to sink in. Yoruichi promised herself that she would not cry.
"How long do you think?" she asked Soi Fon.
"I'm sure it will be a while. But to us, it won't seem that way. And with the way time is different for us, Yachiru will still be a child when - you understand? So, you should make your good memories now before you can't anymore.
"And if you can stand the thought of Kisuke sleeping around - not that he probably doesn't do that already - you should leave him. Before you know it, you can go back to him. If he's that important to you, just step away for a while. Tell yourself that when she's gone you will go back to him."
"I don't want her to be gone."
Soi Fon smiled at her and took her hand. "Then don't think about it."
Soi Fon wouldn't mention it again. She'd just remind her to treasure every day. Then she'd be there for her when sister was gone.
She could see it now.
Yoruichi would be shocked. She would not know why it happened. One day, her daughter was full of life. The next, things slowed down for her. One day, her daughter would eat a big family dinner with them. The next, she wasn't so hungry.
One day sister would sit down and watch Yachiru try on a child's size wedding dress. Sister would say they were just playing dress up. Sister would do her hair, do her makeup.
Kenpachi wouldn't mind that just for a day, his daughter pretended to be a grown-up.
They'd take a picture, file it away.
Yachiru could look at it when she wore her real wedding dress.
Kisuke Urahara could fix the problem. And Kurotsuchi. Either could work. But Urahara would be all too happy to see those years pass. And Kurotsuchi? No one could count on a madman.
"Obaa-chan! Obaa-chan!"
The two looked to Yachiru jumping up and down. She came with a small group - Shirahime, Kenpachi, Ikkaku, Yumichika, Tessai, Ururu, and Jinta.
Clearly Kisuke was missing.
"How's my little niece?" Soi Fon asked as she came over.
What a strange world it was, Soi Fon now related to Kenpachi Zaraki.
"Good. But I want candy, and mom says no candy until we eat!"
"Until after you eat your nice meal," Shirahime corrected.
Soi Fon looked to her and smiled. It hurt to think one day she wouldn't be there to scold Yachiru for only wanting candy.
"That's it," she thought to herself, "I'll stay with Zaraki more and keep an eye out on her. Maybe then she won't feel like her mom is really gone."
"Tessai," Shirahime said to him, "do you know of some kind of diner around here? A little café like this one isn't really a place to have a big meal."
"Sure," he said. "I'll take us there."
