INT. HEEYA'S LABORATORY – ZIRA CLINIC

Electricity hums through a tiny blue lightbulb in an otherwise dark forgotten lab under the clinic. Closed specimen drawers line the far wall where lost souls once came after losing their fight for survival. Laboratory equipment and outdated computers are scattered throughout, powered down, but in good condition and clean. A vault door on one side of the room is locked and triple-bolted.

A large service elevator in the corner lights up. The doors open to reveal the Doctor and Heeya.

HEEYA
We'll be safe here.

Heeya throws a switch near the elevator and the lab comes to life. Overhead lights flicker on. The computers and laboratory equipment boot up. A space heater hums. In the meantime, the Doctor rubs his hands together and blows on them.

DOCTOR
A bit chilly. What is this place?

HEEYA
The clinic first started as a "life extension center". The founders were obsessed with the aging process and doing whatever they could to reverse it, or at least slow it down. This was one of their original laboratories. When their mission expanded, and the planet was declared a hospital world, it was converted into a morgue. But we're so big, these facilities don't even meet the needs of our dead anymore.

The Doctor walks over to one of the booted up computer stations.

DOCTOR
Are these hooked into the global network?

HEEYA
(nods)
They're a little slow. The hardware is old and the software is outdated.

The Doctor accesses the terminal and pulls up the public Tonades police records. Meanwhile, Dr. Heeya approaches him from behind and scans him with a medical scanner.

HEEYA
How are you feeling? Your vision and balance have clearly improved.

He reads the screen.

DOCTOR
There's nothing in the official police report. It looks like the Tonades are keeping information on Rose to restricted level and above. What's the nearest trial planet?

HEEYA
Fulton. How's the nausea?

DOCTOR
We're about a day's away from Fulton by hyperstream, but we have to assume they have regular transport runs. The local precinct is eight voleks from here. Do you have any way out of the building without going back up into the hospital?

HEEYA
No.

DOCTOR
If I had my sonic screwdriver, I could bypass the command codes and get into the restricted police files.

HEEYA
Doctor, you're still not-

DOCTOR
Wait a minute! I still have the Tardis. If I can dial in to its operating wave, I can...

He taps furiously at the keyboard.

DOCTOR
… Yes! I'm in. Wait a minute. This doesn't look right.

The Doctor squints to read what's on the monitor. He practically presses his eyeball to the screen. To get his attention, Heeya grabs the side of the screen and turns it 180 degrees. He backs away to avoid getting clocked in the face.

HEEYA
Doctor, you're still not well. The inhibitor I gave you only masked your symptoms.

DOCTOR
Can you get more of the inhibitor?

HEEYA
Of course, but...

DOCTOR
Then, don't worry about it.

He turns the monitor. She turns it back.

HEEYA
You're not listening. You have the most incredible brain I've ever encountered. Your genetic structure is fascinating and, more importantly, you are the last of your kind in the entire universe. I can't let the universe be without you.

DOCTOR
My dear, the universe has tried to kill me more times than I can count. I'm a tougher kill than you give me credit for.

HEEYA
Doctor...

DOCTOR
No!

He puts his foot down.

DOCTOR
She only came here because she was trying to help me. She was worried about me, and now her life is in danger. That's not how it's supposed to work. So, you do whatever it is you need to do to make me well, but you're going to have to do it on the fly, because she's in trouble and I have to save her. These are not options. These are facts.

He turns away from Heeya and types away at the computer. She watches him, clearly concerned.

HEEYA
I understand. You're the Doctor. You're used to being the strong one, the one who knows what to do, with the power to save lives. You see desperate people all the time, and it's your job to help them. It defines you, gives your life meaning.

He stops what he's doing, looks at her. They gaze into each other's eyes.

HEEYA
And you can't even fathom existing on the other side of that arrangement, even in an act of self-preservation, as long as there's someone in need with only you to depend on. You are the Doctor.

DOCTOR
I am the Doctor.

She cradles his face.

HEEYA
Well, I'm a doctor, too. I'm your doctor.

He takes her wrist and pulls her hand from his face. He then turns the monitor around and resumes his work.

DOCTOR
I'm through sitting on the sideline.

Disappointed, she nods.

He reads the screen.

DOCTOR
There's something wrong. I upgraded the Tardis remote interface template months ago. Why am I seeing the older version?

He thinks.

DOCTOR
Hm. Maybe these computers are so old, it automatically rolled back for better overall compatibility. Ah, I'm in. Rose is scheduled to be transferred, wait, what? There's been an assault on the precinct.

HEEYA (O.S.)
An assault, really?

DOCTOR
Their emergency beacon's been activated. They're requesting backup. More Tonades are on the way and will be here soon. I'm out of time. I need to get to that precinct right now. But first...

The Doctor enters a few key strokes.

INT. SURVEILLANCE ROOM – SECURITY OFFICE – ZIRA CLINIC

No one monitors the video cameras, presumably having been called into action when Doctor Two shot up an entire floor of the clinic. All of the monitors switch to static.

INT. HEEYA'S LABORATORY – ZIRA CLINIC

The Doctor stands up.

DOCTOR
There. That should make it a little easier to sneak upstairs unnoticed and-

TSST!

The Doctor grabs his neck and turns around. He sees a used injector in Heeya's hand.

DOCTOR
Are you kidding me, right now?

HEEYA
I'm sorry, but I won't let you risk your life for her.

DOCTOR
Oh, I am so done with this place.

He passes out at her feet.

INT. TONADES PRECINCT - SQUAD ROOM

Bronze Cyberman and Silver Humanoid take point, rifles raised, as they emerge from a hallway on the second level of the two story squad room. Desks, computers, and bodies are strewn with debris piled against the west end walls. Judging by the crater in the wall on the east side, the debris was blown there after a bomb went off.

Rose and Golden Monkey lag behind en route to a staircase leading to the first floor. Just as they reach the top of the stairs, Tonades officers hidden behind some debris open fire.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
Ambush!

They all take cover. Silver Humanoid fires back at the Tonades from around a pillar. Rose covers her ears when she sees Golden Monkey pull out a grenade.

GOLDEN MONKEY
Grenade!

BOOM!

One Tonades officer goes down due to the force of the blast. The rest take cover and cough from the smoke.

GOLDEN MONKEY
The window.

Silver Humanoid nods. He taps Bronze Cyberman on the shoulder and points first at the window, then down. Bronze Cyberman races over to the nearest window and blasts out the glass.

EXT. WINDOW - TONADES PRECINCT - DAY

Twenty stories up, Bronze Cyberman leans out the window. He pulls two rounded discs from a utility belt he wears around his waist and attaches one to the wall on each side of the window frame. He presses a button that ignites two sets of lasers. The first laser beams rotate inward, across the window, and meet in the middle, connecting the two discs in a single beam. The second pair of lasers fire straight down the side of the building, ending at the ground.

INT. TONADES PRECINCT - SQUAD ROOM

Bronze Cyberman turns and gives the 'Ok' sign to Golden Monkey. She nods back. He acknowledges and then proceeds to jump out the open window! His body crosses the laser connecting the two discs and vanishes into thin air.

GOLDEN MONKEY
Rose, you're up next.

Rose shakes her head.

ROSE
If you think I'm going out there, you're nuts.

Weapons fire from a Tonades officer misses Rose's head by inches. She ducks and screams.

GOLDEN MONKEY
You're more than welcome to stay here. Me? I'd rather live.

Silver Humanoid jumps out the window. His body crosses the laser line and vanishes.

ROSE
Promise I won't die?

GOLDEN MONKEY
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Golden Monkey lets loose a ferocious barrage from her rifle to hold off the Tonades. Simultaneously, she grabs Rose by the hair, drags her to the window, and chucks her outside. Rose screams and vanishes.

EXT. ALLEY - TONADES PRECINCT - DAY

Rose materializes on the ground in an alley a few feet away from Silver Humanoid and Bronze Cyberman, who are themselves getting inside a flying escape van. She looks down, amazed to find herself standing on pavement in an alley between the Tonades precinct and a second enormous tower.

Golden Monkey materializes next to Rose.

GOLDEN MONKEY
We need to move. Tonades reinforcements will be here any second.

Golden Monkey reaches for Rose, but recoils at the sight of a weapon pointed at her head. It's Rose, pointing the sidearm given to her by Golden Monkey in the first place.

ROSE
I'm not going anywhere with you.

Silver Humanoid throws his hands in the air.

SILVER HUMANOID
(to Golden Monkey)

You see? You see? This is why I tell you not to give them a weapon.

GOLDEN MONKEY
(to Rose)
Just take it easy. We're here to help.

ROSE
I want to know who you people are.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
We don't have time for this.

Bronze Cyberman looks up and sees a troop transport delivering Tonades reinforcements to the roof of the precinct.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
The transport ship is here. We have to go.

GOLDEN MONKEY
Rose, that gun is set for stun. You won't kill me.

ROSE
Counting on it.

Rose shoots Silver Humanoid in the chest. He falls backwards into the van, winded and in obvious pain. She points the gun back at Golden Monkey.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
Total shanks!

SILVER HUMANOID
The bitch shot me!

ROSE
Yeah, cry about it. Now, listen to me. I have been thrown up on, yelled at, kidnapped, threatened, strangled, shot at, and tossed from a window. I just found out it is literally illegal for me to be alive, that I might be the last human in the entire universe, and, on top of that, I'm getting my period, so I will shoot you all in your faces and take my chances on my own if you don't tell me who you are and what you want from me.

GOLDEN MONKEY
We're members of an organization known as the Preservers. Our mission is to liberate and protect people who represent the last of their kind in an effort to facilitate re-population of the species. We intercepted the Tonades' request for transport to send you to Fulton. That's a trial world where they are currently all in a very good mood planning your public, and very painful, execution. That's how we knew you were here. You are not the last human, but you're one of the last, which is why we're trying to save your life. Good enough?

ROSE
So, you people rescue rare aliens?

BRONZE CYBERMAN
Yes!

ROSE
My Doctor's a rare alien. He's a Time Lord, the last of his kind. I'm pretty sure he's still at the Zira Clinic.

Bronze Cyberman helps a groggy Silver Humanoid to his feet.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
(to Golden Monkey)
If we don't leave, right now, we'll all be joining her on the block.

ROSE
You agree to help me rescue the Doctor, and I'll go with you.

GOLDEN MONKEY
We only have orders to-

Rose shoots Silver Humanoid again. He drops.

GOLDEN MONKEY
Okay, okay, can you please stop shooting my man? The clinic's that way.

Golden Monkey points.

ROSE
Then, that's where we're going.

GOLDEN MONKEY
Fine, just get in.

Bronze Cyberman scoops up Silver Humanoid and hurls him into the back of the getaway van. Rose gets in the far back, to keep everyone honest.

INT. ESCAPE VAN

Rose keeps the gun pointed forward as Golden Monkey gets in the driver's seat. Bronze Cyberman slides the backdoor shut just as...

CRASHPLAT!

Rose screams, startled by the sound of a body slamming against the pavement a few feet from the van. Golden Monkey laughs.

GOLDEN MONKEY
I love it when they try and follow.

Golden Monkey flies the van up and out of the alley.

INT. HALLWAY – LEVEL THIRTEEN – ZIRA CLINIC

Nurse Bormi tests a groggy Leegrall in the hall outside the Doctor's hospital room. The Tonades officer can barely stay upright in his chair, much less follow her index finger left and right.

VALOR (O.S.)
RRRAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

Everyone turns their attention down the hall to where Lieutenant Valor limps his way out of an elevator. Dried blood has settled into the creases of his cheek. His left eye is bloodshot. One shoulder is set slightly lower than the other and the ends of his hair are burnt. There's a hole in the center of his uniform where Doctor Two shot him, and the skin underneath is cracked, but in tact.

Leegrall stands up from the chair as Valor approaches. He tries to stand at attention, but has to use the chair for support.

VALOR
(to Leegrall)
You... had... one... job.

BORMI
Lieutenant, are you all right?

Valor brushes by Bormi and pushes Leegrall into the wall.

VALOR
How do you let him get by you when he's strapped to a bloody bed?!

LEEGRALL
(slurring)
I didn'! Som'one dwugged me.

VALOR
Who?

BORMI
That's a gunshot wound. You need immediate medical attention. Will someone please page Dr. Heeya, again?

VALOR
(to Leegrall)
Who's the accomplice?

LEEGRALL
(slurring)
I don' know. Cam'ras aren' working.

VALOR
So, we have no idea where the Doctor is. That's great!

LEEGRALL
(slurring)
No-no. He's inside. I gots him when he came back.

Confused, Valor looks in through the window to the Doctor's room. Sure enough, Doctor Two is strapped in the bed, now wearing similar loose-fitting white sweat pants and a t-shirt, just like the original Doctor when he was checked in. He's been hooked up to several machines and appears to be unconscious.

Valor steps toward the door, but Bormi stands in his way.

BORMI
No. He suffered a violent seizure and cardiac episode. I managed to stabilize him in time, but I can't let you-

Valor pushes her aside.

INT. SECURED HOSPITAL ROOM – ZIRA CLINIC

Valor surveys the equipment hooked up to Doctor Two and limps up to the bed. Doctor Two appears to be sleeping.

VALOR
I'm not buying it, you know. The whole "sick" routine.

Valor waits for a response. When he gets none, he grabs the hanging IV bag and squeezes it. Doctor Two's eyes open and he seizes up in the bed.

VALOR
You were free. You were gone. I don't know how you did it, but it was over. You had won. Yet, you came back to your room? Why? Why would you do something so stupid? Do you have any idea what I'm going to do to you?

DOCTOR TWO
I've been through so much worse than anything you could ever do to me. The real question is, do you have any idea what I'm going to do to you?

Valor laughs.

VALOR
Do to me? From your bed? What can you do?

An odd buzzing filters into the room. Valor looks around for the source of the sound, confused.

EXT. SECURED HOSPITAL ROOM – ZIRA CLINIC - DAY

Outside the clinic, the escape van carrying Golden Monkey, Bronze Cyberman, Silver Humanoid, and Rose hovers near the wall of the building.

INT. ESCAPE VAN

On the console of the escape van, Golden Monkey reads an infrared scan of Doctor Two's room with two heat signatures inside. She cycles through the infrared, to an X-ray image, and then to a view that sees right through the wall. From the backseat, Rose points to Doctor Two in the bed.

ROSE
That's him.

Golden Monkey nods and locks crosshairs on Valor.

INT. SECURED HOSPITAL ROOM – ZIRA CLINIC

An energy blast blows a hole through the outside wall of the Doctor's room and connects with Valor's side, throwing him back out into the hall, through a nurses' station, and into a janitor's closet.

Golden Monkey steers the van alongside the open hole in the wall. Bronze Cyberman and Silver Humanoid hop out of the van and rush to Doctor Two's bedside. They undo his straps and help him out of the bed.

DOCTOR TWO
Thanks for the save, whoever you are.

BRONZE CYBERMAN
Don't thank us. Thank her.

Rose reaches her hand out of the van and offers it to Doctor Two.

ROSE
(to Doctor Two)
Miss me?

He hesitates when he sees her.

ROSE
What's wrong?

DOCTOR TWO
Nothing.

Doctor Two jumps into the van, followed by Bronze Cyberman and Silver Humanoid, who closes the door. They fly away.

INT. HALLWAY – LEVEL THIRTEEN – ZIRA CLINIC

Leegrall crawls across the floor as various nurses, bulldog guards, and doctors come out of hiding. He looks inside the janitor's closet. Inside, Lieutenant Valor is a mess, but amazingly alive.

LEEGRALL
(slurring)
Ah you aw-right, sir?

VALOR
I'm really starting to hate the Doctor.

Valor groans.
