The rest of Sunday passed easily, Emma and Henry spent the day and evening with Regina at the hospital playing Scrabble and when David came late in the evening to pick up Henry so Emma could stay at the hospital with her wife for the night, Regina finally slept peacefully and without any pain. Dr. Whale called the OB doctor to change her Monday checkup to Wednesday and told her she would likely be able to be discharged the next day, Monday. Regina, after watching Emma try to get comfortable in an armchair for half an hour, invited Emma to curl onto the hospital bed with her, which Emma was elated at. What started off as Emma spooning Regina, ended with the blonde waking up to her wife facing her. One pale hand was resting tenderly on a hospital gown-clad hip, and her wife's face was buried against her breasts. Emma chuckled lightly and lowered her head as much as she could to take in her wife's beautiful and relaxed features. She couldn't see much, so she just allowed her head to relax back onto the pillow and used the hand that was cradling dark hair to stroke it gently while using the hand on the other woman's hip to draw slow circles on her small waist.
After nearly half an hour of Emma being awake, Regina started to stir, taking in a deep breath before lifting her head and noticing where it had been nestled. Cheeks tingeing pink and eyes crinkling, her tell that she was trying not to smile but felt happy, Regina cleared her throat and pushed herself up on the bed the best she could.1
"Good morning," Emma said, her voice still husky from not having spoken yet.
"Good morning to you too," Regina answered in a mumble. "Sorry…" she started, waving her hand weakly over Emma's chest to signify what she was talking about, then continued timidly, "about that."
"No problem. I've missed waking up next to you…it was nice."
"I have to admit…I've quite missed it, too."
"You get to go home today."
"Yes, and now I'll know what to do to keep this baby safe. I don't want her going anywhere."
"Neither do I, she's going to be such a little you, I can't wait."
"We'll see. Do you need to be at work today?"
"Nope, David gave me the week off, said he'll get Ruby or Leroy to help out with extra shifts that he and Jack can't work."
"You're lucky to have a father who is so protective of your family. I loved my father but…"
"Shh, I know, baby," Emma soothed; pulling Regina's head back to her chest. Her heart was breaking at how many people had let this woman down in her life and she had become just another one of them. If anything, though, it furthered her determination to make it all as right and better as she could. "He's disappointed in me, you know?"
"Hmm?" Regina hummed, taking in big, forest green eyes.
"Dad…he's disappointed in me for cheating on you. He didn't so much say it, I guess, but I can see it when he looks at the two of us, when he sees that we're acting different than we were. I think you may be his favorite daughter."
"Oh, shush. He may be disappointed, but kids are supposed to do things to disappoint their parents, they just missed being upset with you for the first 28 years of your life, he's making up for it now," Regina comforted, adding a teasing wink to the blonde.
"Hey, you're not supposed to be the one comforting me right now."
"I'm a mother, it's what I do."
They were interrupted when Dr. Whale entered the room to give Regina instructions to follow for her prenatal care.
"Alright, Regina, things are looking a little better, but your blood pressure is still too high. No processed foods, no red meat, nothing high in sodium. I don't want you working more than half days, and that includes working from home, just because you are not in an office doesn't mean you can do your work without it having an effect. 8-12, that's it, or some variation of it that doesn't go over four hours a day. When at home, I want you to let Emma and Henry pamper you, ok? Don't do excessive work and don't allow things to stress you out." He stopped her attempt at arguing by raising his hand to show her he wasn't finished. "I'm serious. Emma mentioned that you guys have some extra stressors on top of everyday life right now, and while I encourage taking care of that, if it is going to make you angry, you need to step away from it for a little while. Walking is good, go outside and enjoy nature, relax, but no running or excessive exercise."
"But, you're literally telling me I can do almost nothing!"
"No, you can have sex, it's a good stress reliever and a good form of exercise. And you can walk. Yoga or Pilates would be good, too. We need to monitor this baby, also, so you'll have to come for weekly neonatal stress tests, alright?"
"Alright, alright," Regina grumbled, surprised at his mention of sex, but then figured he thought they would ask.
"I'm serious. This is really early to be showing symptoms of preeclampsia, so we need to really monitor it, understood?"
"Yes, now discharge me."
"Here are your forms, the nurse will be in shortly to collect them and give you your follow-up paperwork." He looked at Emma, "take care of this one…we all know how stubborn she is." The blonde nodded with a light chuckle, earning a glare from her wife.
The rest of the day passed quickly and David dropped Henry off around dinnertime, opting to stay for a family dinner with them. Emma explained to the guys all the restrictions Regina was on from Dr. Whale, causing an eruption of laughter from both of them.
"This is not funny," Regina pouted.
"Guess you can't sneak anymore of those burgers and chili cheese fries you've been eating almost everyday," David teased.
"Shut it, you! Do not doubt that if I have to go without all of these things, so do these two," she added, pointing to Henry and Emma. "And you can bet your ass that I will be bringing Emma's lunch to the station everyday on my way home from work just to ensure it, and then see who's laughing when you have to deal with a pissy Emma because she hasn't had her red meat."
"Aww, Regina," Emma whined. "That's not fair!"
"Mom, no! What did I do?" Henry complained.
"Oh yes, my dears. We are going to be the model healthy family. Just you guys wait."
After David left, the two mothers made their way upstairs to make sure Henry was in bed, and after closing his door, Emma kissed Regina on the forehead to say goodnight.
"Where do you think you're going?" Regina asked as Emma walked to the guest room.
"To bed…"
"I'm tired of sleeping alone," Regina said simply, offering her hand to her wife, who took it happily and they slept the night away cuddling the way they had the night before.
When they woke up the next day, they were very nearly too late waking up for their session with Dr. Hopper. They both dressed and Regina made breakfast for Henry before they headed to their session. When Archie let them into the office they sat down next to each other instead of on opposite ends of the couch. Emma saw him scribbling something on his legal pad and smiled at him when he looked up.
"I can see things appear to be going well?" he said.
"Yes, we actually had Friday and Saturday evenings to talk and get out some issues," Regina offered.
"And then we had a health scare with the baby in the middle of the night Saturday and I like to think it threw things into perspective for us," Emma added.
"Ok, and what perspective is that?" Archie asked.
"Well, we both really decided that we're all in, the therapy, the talks, it all meant something and even if we were both telling ourselves that we wanted to make it work, I don't think that we really realized how much we want and need each other until we were going through something together, something that wasn't caused by either of us but was happening to both of us."
"Good, I am glad to hear that. Now, do you want to discuss what you spoke with each other about over the weekend first, or would you like to start on topics that might be of issue that either of you may have been thinking about?"
"Actually, I have something I need to share with Regina."
"Go ahead."
The blonde turned her torso to face her wife on the couch beside her. "There have been reports filed. Dad and I were trying to get them taken care of, but they were filed anonymously and we can't figure out where they came from. We agreed that we needed to tell you about them, but after Sunday we decided to wait until you were home from the hospital, and I decided with Dr. Hopper might be best."
"What reports?"
"Complaints, actually, against us. Several of them, for noise, indecency and child neglect."
"What?" Regina growled. "Who would…Snow?"
"Maybe. I don't know. Dad says he's going to ask her about it."
"I don't even care about the others, but child neglect? That's just ridiculous."
"I know."
Regina was in a bad mood to top bad moods. Throw anything at the women but don't question their parenting, they loved Henry more than anything and wouldn't ever do anything to hurt him, especially not after everything he had already gone through in his life. She decided she needed to bring up what David spoke to her about at the hospital, she was certain Emma didn't know.
"We need to do something about your mother, dear."
"I thought I had. I mean, defending you, right?"
"No, I wish that was all. When you called David after bringing me to the hospital they had a fight, she told him not to go, because I was there and she doesn't want him to see me."
"But it wasn't about you! I needed him for support!"
"I know. And he told her that if she told him he couldn't go, he would anyway and then he'd leave her and that's what made her shut up."
Emma growled through her teeth. "I seriously thought we were done with this shit! It's ridiculous. I'm married to you. I can understand the idea not being pleasant when we first started dating, but she ought to be past her hatred by now."
"Yeah, well, I did sleep with him, ages ago, and she just found out, so maybe its somewhat justified."
"Not if she's the one filing anonymous complaints and telling my dad he can't come be with me when I need comfort."
"I'm sorry, Emma. David wasn't sure if you'd want to know, so he left it up to me to decide."
"Fine. It's…fine."
Archie took Emma's dismissal of the subject to ask them if they wanted to discuss anything else that directly related to their relationship with each other.
"I uh…I actually need to ask something," Emma hesitated.
"What would you like to ask?"
"Regina, I need you to be completely honest with me and maybe I'm being stupid, but do you, or did you ever have feelings towards my dad, more than just lust that one time?"
Regina's face fell slightly, and she cupped Emma's cheek in her hand. "Emma, sweetheart, no. I love your father, he's my best friend, and my father-in-law… and we really have a twisted family tree. But no, David is a good man, he is a kind man, but I've never seen him as anything more than an enemy, a friend and family, ok?"
Emma nodded and gave a small smile. "I'm sorry. Just…the way he was holding you when I came back to the hospital that morning made me a little jealous."
"I'm sorry. Maybe it wasn't appropriate. I…I'm not used to having friends and I don't know how to do it very well."
"No, don't feel bad. It's ok…I was just being weird. But dad did tell me why he was holding you like that."
Regina's face registered the realization that washed over her with Emma's words. It was something she didn't want to talk about, but she knew Emma was about to bring it up and she couldn't really refuse the conversation in front of Archie. "Did he?"
"He told me you were upset because you thought that if you lost the baby there would be no reason for me to stay. Is that true? Is that how you feel?"
"Sometimes. I mean, I know we were engaged before we got pregnant, but after everything that happened, I guess I felt like maybe you didn't want me anymore. I know you keep saying you do, but sometimes…"
"Sometimes words aren't enough, I get it. I'm sorry you feel that way, Regina. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure you know that I don't ever want to leave you, no matter how many kids we have. No, I don't want to lose our daughter, but that's because she's one more person, one more testament that is half you and half me that will show our love for each other."
"Ok," Regina whispered.
"You two are doing really well, I think. You communicate well with each other, when you try. And I think that is probably one of the biggest issues I've seen between you two. You can communicate tremendously well, but you both seem timid to bring up topics that need to be discussed, and that's the issue. You both need to have faith in yourselves, in each other, that you will overcome problems that arise, together. You're both persistent and independent women, which are great traits to have, but maybe not the most helpful when it comes to trying to make your marriage come back from almost breaking." Both women nodded. "Now, was there anything from your discussions over the weekend that you would like to talk about?"
"Not…not really," Emma supplied.
"We mostly talked about things from our pasts, but we did talk about the night that Emma almost slept with Neal and the night I slept with her father. We cleared some things up that weren't covered before."
"Anything you guys feel the need to discuss here?"
"No," Regina stated. Emma nodded in agreement with her wife.
"Alright, we're getting close to the end for today. Was there anything you two wanted to add? Anything you need from your partner in order to keep making things restore to where they once were?"
"I have something to say," Emma mumbled, hesitant of upsetting Regina. When Archie nodded at her and Regina looked into her eyes with her pretty doe-like chocolate ones, Emma continued. "I just…I'm trying, I want to do everything I can to prove that I'm never leaving and that I'll never hurt you the way I have before. And…I get that you have trust issues, but I need you to be willing to see that I am changing things. Stop running away from me when I kiss you, if you don't want to kiss, pull away, but don't just leave and go to bed, or leave the room or find something else to do. Stay and talk to me." Regina nodded her understanding and Emma offered a weak smile.
"Regina, was there anything you wanted to ask of Emma?" Archie inquired.
"Just, patience. I'll be completely ready one day." Emma nodded slowly.
"Ok, well, that's all for today. I'll see you two on Friday?"
"Yes. Actually, can we make it after 1? I have been put on work restrictions by Dr. Whale so my afternoons are the only free part of my days now."
"Certainly, 1 is open. See you then." He ushered them out the door and smiled at himself. They were both interesting and complex women and he enjoyed watching them work through picking up the pieces when both of them had once been too broken to do so.
Emma informed Regina that there was a stop she wanted to make before going home. They picked up lunch from Granny's and Emma drove the car over to her parent's apartment, asking Regina to stay in the car. Not that her wife would put up much of a fight, she would stay as far away from Snow as possible.
Emma flew through the door searching for her mother, angrier than she could ever remember being in her entire life. "Where are you?" she shouted, standing by the loft stairs to her former bedroom. When nothing happened, she stood and waited another minute before repeating her beckon. Finally, when her mother emerged from the bathroom, Emma strode up to her, putting her face directly in front of her mother's. "What the hell were you thinking?"
"What?" Snow asked, feigning innocence.
"You! You were considering telling dad he couldn't come comfort me when my pregnant wife was in the hospital? What is wrong with you? I want Mary-Margaret, my friend, back. I don't even know who you are or how I could possibly share DNA with you! I want you out of my life. Do not call, do not come over, you won't see Henry anymore! If dad wants to, he can come visit, but I don't want you within 250 feet of any entrance to my house."
"Emma, I…" her mother started timidly.
"No! You don't get a say here! Are you behind the reports, too?"
"What reports?" Snow asked, but Emma's alarms were blazing in her head.
"Don't you lie to me! Don't you dare! Did you do them? Did you file them all?" Emma screamed.
After a moments silence, Snow shook her head and very weakly responded. "Yes."
