Disclaimer: I do not own Stand by me.

"You're Ace's girlfriend?" I asked astonished, I was really still just trying to wrap my head around it.

"Ex girlfriend." Autumn replied a small smile playing on her lips.

"Right, sorry just having a really hard time picturing Ace showing any kind of compassion for someone." I said shaking my head. No the idea was impossible.

"He actually was a very good boyfriend," She said "he can be nice when he wants to be, in fact he brought me soup when I was sick once."

"Ace can be nice?" I asked, I probably had a really stupid look on my face but it was hard not to when I learn that the guy that almost let me be mauled by dogs actually cared about a girl at some point.

"I get that reaction a lot." she smiled.

"So why'd you break up?" Chris asked earning a jab in the ribs from me. "Ow what?"
"No it's okay, actually I broke it off with him. His record was too much, he was told if he got into anymore trouble then he might serve time." She said. "I just didn't want to have to worry about that." I nodded, it made sense, what girl wants to be constantly worrying about her boyfriend going to jail?

"So now you're with Nick?" Chris asked raising an eyebrow.

"Yes, it's been a year I think it's time to try to move on." she leaned up against the building now realizing that this was going to be a longer conversation then expected.

"Try to move on? You mean you still like him?" I asked.

"Hey I'm no whore, I'm not using Nick to try and get over Ace or anything I like him. But yeah I will admit that a part of me misses Ace."

"But you seem nice why would you like him?" Chris asked pulling out a cigarette and lighting it up. Autumn shrugged.

"I guess I like a boy that shows his soft side only to me, its how you know they care."

"One more question, why would you move on from Ace, to Nick?" I asked. "They don't like each other."
"I told you, I like Nick, but also think about it. Is there anyone else in this town that would stand up to Ace the way Nick does? If I was with someone else then they might leave me just because Ace was my ex."

Autumn was nice, nicer then the other girls in town. And that helped a lot because if she was nice then I don't think I could expect her telling Nick about anything I ask her or say that he might use against me. She didn't seem the one to choose sides in a fight and she had seemed mad at Nick for playing me with Fake money.

"So Eyeball told me you two are together?" she asked. Chris and I nodded. "How did that happen?"

"Saved her from Ace." Chris said. Autumn rolled her eyes.

"Of course, Ace can't leave anyone alone. Not even a girl." Chris and I shared a look before Autumn started talking again. "But you two seem like a good match, Nick says you two are good kids."

"I thought Nick hated me?" I asked getting confused.

"Nah, Nick is a tough guy but he doesn't hate you, he hates that he got hustled by you but he respects your talents."

"Do you think he would ever play me again?" I asked taking a shot and putting myself out there.

"Why you get your foot out of a bear Trap do you just Jam it right back in?"

"fair enough."
"Why do you want to play him again anyways?" she asked raising an eyebrow. Autumn was nice, but there was no way she was getting any secrets out of me.

"Nicks a good opponent and after people saw him lose to me not many people will play me, I kind of want him to win a few so more people will be willing to play me." I said, Chris gave me a thats the best you can do? look but I shrugged it off, it seemed to be enough for Autumn.

"Oh, well I don't think he'll be playing you at all." she laughed, damn it. Then something popped into my mind.

"Is Nick as mean as Ace?" I asked.

"What?"
"You said he shows his soft side to you, are you the only one Nick shows his soft side to?"

"Well kind of but he gets really upset when his mom is brought up." she said.

"His mom?"
"Yeah she died two years ago. He actually had to sell her ring someone, and he was really upset about it."

"Who'd he sell it to?" I asked my voice going a full octave higher hearing the new information.

"Some man." she said.

"What did it look like?"
"Gold band, three diamonds, two blue one clear, the clear I think in the shape of a heart or something." she said. I nodded. "Why?"
"Just wondering." I said quickly.

"Okay well I better get going. See you later, if you need anything Let me know." she said and with one last smile she walked back into the diner.

I turned to Chris who was still working on his smoke.

"We gotta find out who has that ring." I said.

"You're kidding right? How?"
"I don't know, but if I can find it, it might be what he'll be willing to play for or even trade."

"You really think that's a good plan? Scouring the city for a ring that might be long gone?"

"No, but its the only plan I have."

We started to walk down the street together back to Chris' house. He slipped his hand into mine and laced our fingers together.

"Three diamonds, two blue and one white, you know I can't help but think I have seen that somewhere." He muttered.

"Where?"
"I wish I remembered." he said looking down at me, I sighed. It would have helped a lot better if he did remember but he didn't and I couldn't make him. The rest of the walk was in silence but I knew we were both thinking feriously about the new information. So Nick had a girl and she was Ace's ex.

For some reason I felt that she held the answer as to what this key was about. She knew Nick and Ace and that's what I needed someone that knew the both of them. I couldn't bother her though, Nick was usually with her and something told be Ace would be bugging me even more if he knew I was chatting with his Ex girlfriend.

As we came towards Chris' house I noticed the lights were on.

"Chris, I think your dads home." I said.

"yeah." he nodded sighing I stopped tugging on his hand to look at me.

"Chris you shouldn't go in if he's there." He rolled his eyes, it wasn't out of annoyance it was out of routine we were both protective of one another and the other hated it.

"I'll be fine."
"Just stay at my house."

"Anna-"

"Please?" he looked back at the house then back at me.

"I just want one drama free night alright?" I asked, he didn't seem to want to give in and I knew why. He wanted to be home, almost prove to me that he would be fine and it was me that needed protecting.

"He's not gonna bother me."
"But you don't know that." I said keeping a firm hold on his hand.

"No I don't but-"
"CHRIS!" A voice bellowed from inside the house.

"You gotta be kidding me!" Chris muttered aggravated. Chris' dad soon filled the doorway my shirt in his hands. I sucked in a breath, hoping to god he wasn't as mad as he looked.

"How many times have I told you not to bring your whores here?" His dad demanded. Chris pulled me behind him and I knew he was glaring at his dad. We were at the end of the driveway and his dad was still in the doorway but it didn't feel like enough space was between us, it never felt like there was enough.

"Go inside dad." Chris said evenly to his father.

"And didn't I tell you to get dinner for tonight? We need to have dinner." His dad said coming closer to us as he spoke. When the final word slipped from his mouth he was only a few feet away from us, bare chested and barefoot, my shirt still locked in his fist.

"Sorry, thought You'd be drinking yours tonight." The words had barely left his mouth before his dad took a swing at him. Chris's dad was heavy and I knew the punch was too when it crashed into Chris's jaw and sent him sprawled on the ground.

"Chris!" I yelled. I looked up at his dad who didn't even seem to notice me as he kicked his son in the ribs once, then twice. "Stop!" I yelled at him.

"What the fuck did you say to me you little shit?" he asked kicking him again. I didn't know what was coming over me, seeing his dad kick him drove me mad. I hated him I really hated him.

Without knowing it my feet had moved between the two family members and I got a kick in the shin for it, but I didn't feel it too much since I was so terrified.

"You drunk!" I snapped at him pushing on his chest, he didn't move very far a step or two and I knew this was just because he had a few drinks in him.

"This the whore?" his dad asked Chris. "Move." he finally addressed me, I shook my head and knelt down to Chris pulling on his arm to help him stand.

"Anna leave." Chris said through gritted teeth.

"I said move!" His dad yelled, I then felt two rough large hands grab my shoulders and push me to the ground onto my back. I was fine, my palms were scrapped but that was it, I looked up in time to see Chris charge at his dad.

"Don't you fucking touch her!"

Chris got in a punch but his dad wasn't as drunk as I had hoped and delivered a punch to his gut. Chris doubled over and was punched in the eye falling to the ground again.

"Anna Get the fuck out of here!" Chris yelled at me again, but I couldn't I couldn't leave I couldn't just leave him like that. I pushed myself off the ground and walked up to Chris's dad.

The next thing I knew, I heard the sound of Skin on skin impact, my knuckles hurt like a bitch and Chris' dad was holding his cheek, not hurt but stunned. I had punched him. Chris' dad walked over to me and without thinking I brought my arm up and punched him again. It hurt, but hitting him felt so much better. Chris' dad didn't even flinch, he actually laughed.

"You seriously think you can take me on?" he asked walking towards me, I back up right into Chris' truck. "Do you?"

"N-no." I whispered, becoming short of breath, terrified of his dad as he crept closer. I jumped and yelped as his dad punched the red metal of the truck right beside me.

"Wise answer." His dad whispered back, the evil glint in his eyes I saw in only a few people. My dad, Charlie and Ace.

The beep of a cop car seemed to have everyone Crashing back to reality. Mr. Chambers turned his head to see the cops driving by their lights flashing up siren was off, Chris was now back on his feet and waved off the police car. It drove slowly and it was like the world had slowed with it.

Mr. Chambers backed away from me and smiled at the cops who did a little wave but kept their eyes on us.

When they were gone I thought things were going to snap right back to reality but they didn't. Chris' dad seemed to get all the warning he needed and backed off even farther.

"I better not see you for a few days." he sneered at Chris before walking inside and shutting the door.

"I told you to leave." Chris said grabbing my face in his hands and forcing me to look at him. Already I could see a faint bruise appearing on his jaw.

"I couldn't." I whispered.

"Lets get out of here." he said and opened the truck door for me.

We drove to my house and we went up to my room through the window. I never felt so safe in my home.

I looked at Chris, he had pulled off his jacket and was just standing there. He looked so calm and I would have thought he was until I saw his hands shaking.

"You're shaking." I said.

"Damn fucking right I am!" he snapped. "God Anna I told you to leave! Why didn't you?"
"I couldn't leave you with him-"
"Do you even know what could have happened if the cops didn't come? Do you? God Anna." he cursed running a hand through his hair.

"Look at me I'm fine." I pleaded grabbing onto his wrists upset that he was still shaking.

"But you might not have been! I was terrified Anna, I couldn't help you, the only thing I could do was ask you to leave and you couldn't even do that!" he yelled.

"Shh Chris!" I said, I was sure my dad wasn't home I just didn't want him to yell, he scared me when he yelled.

"You get enough shit Anna, you don't need to be getting it from my Family too." he said his voice quieting down.

"Don't you get it Chris? You don't deserve that treatment either, and I am not gonna sit and watch you take it." I pulled away from him and began to pace. "You told me you couldn't stand to watch me get hurt, well its the same for you. The only thing worse then going through it is watching it happen to someone else."
"Then why didn't you go? I didn't want you to watch it."

"Cause I knew the second I left I would never forgive myself." I finally yelled at him my face getting hot and red, tears pricking the back of my eyes. "Don't you get that I care about you? That you are probably the only person in my life right now that cares about me? I'm not letting that go Chris I'm not gonna watch you get beaten, more so I'm not gonna walk away and let you get beaten."

he stayed silent just watching me with an unreadable expression.

"I want to be there like you're here for me." I said my voice quieting down. "I care way too much to let that happen to you, to let yourself get beaten and broken when you save me every time."

"You don't need to repay me-"
"Is that what you think this is? Me repaying you for helping me, for staying with me? You are an idiot! I want to be there for you! I care about you! Get that through your God damn head Chris! And don't get mad at me when I refuse to leave, because you do the same thing-"

"Shhh, please don't cry." he said rushing over to me.

"I'm not crying." I whispered. He chuckled and pulled me into his chest.

"Yeah you are." I touched my cheeks and my fingers came back wet.

"I care about you too, I really do, thats why I don't want you there when you can get hurt."

"I'm already hurt Chris, the worst someone can do to me now is hurt you." I whispered. He pulled back to look at me. Maybe it was because of what I just said, maybe it was because of the emotions flying around the room or maybe it was because he couldn't wait another damn second, but he kissed me, and he kissed me hard and proper.

Chris' hands gripped my waist hugging my to his mouth, I responded sliding my hands up his chest and press against the back of his neck deepening it.

Chris' tongue slid against my own, his hands slid across my waist and gripped my thighs pulling me up. I jumped wrapping my legs around his waist, pressing my mouth harder against his as he walked us back to my bed.

Laying me down he climbed over me, his body hard pressed against mine, hands gripped the fabric of the shirt I was wearing tightly, pulling me up to his body even though there wasn't a sliver of space between us.

We broke away almost at the same time gasping for breath before roughly kissing each other again.

"God Anna." Chris whispered into my lips, before attacking my neck with his lips, I gasped as he nipped the sensitive skin of my neck, sending tiny shivers down my spine with every nip, lick and press of his lips. Our Bodies were radiating so much heat it made the thin clothing we were wearing too much to bare.

Sliding my fingers into his hair I lightly tugged, pulling his mouth back up to my lips.

It was perfect, to be touched and kissed with dignity, like I was something he cared about. To pleasure me not just himself.

Hot and heavy I kissed Chris, everything was Chris at that moment, his scent, his body, just him and me.

I tugged on Chris shirt, fisting the hem of his shirt I pulled it up his willing arms. He watched me for a moment as I ran my hands over the smooth skin of his collar, touching his hot toned chest, running my hands over his abs and back up again, not missing the small scars that were prominent along his skin.

"Liking what you see?" he asked a smirk plastered on his face. And because it was me and Chris, and because we were both smart asses I rolled my eyes.

"Not much to see." I joked back. He growled playfully before pulling my bottom lip between his teeth and tugged. His own hands slipped under my shirt touching the skin of my stomach and back, kneading and massaging the flesh on the small of my back. His hands were rough, scared and damn perfect.

He managed to slip my shirt up and over my head before attacking me, pressing his body to mine, the feeling of skin on skin was driving me insane. Making my head swim, forgetting everything but the boy that was kissing me, his hands sliding up and down my thighs.

Caught up in the moment I felt Chris's finger slide along the band of my shorts and I shivered and pulled away from his mouth.

He looked down at me, Blue beautiful eyes pouring into mine, he smiled a soft smile and rested himself over me, one hand on either side of me holding himself up so not to crush me.

"We ain't gonna do anything you're not ready for." he whispered, kissing my forehead he rolled over onto his back beside me.

"Thank you." I whispered to him. His smile faltered as he glanced over my exposed flesh and I blushed embarrassed at being looked at so intently.

Chris reached out his hand and ran his fingers along my stomach barely grazing me but left my skin burning. I looked down to realize he was tracing scars.

I frowned and took his hand in mine.

"They're old." I said, he pulled my hand up to his lips and pressed a soft kiss on my knuckles.

"I promise there won't be new ones."

Then we laid there, in each others arms, nothing important was said, nothing of any interest either, just listened to each others breathing.

When Chris' breathing became smooth and steady I took the time to think.

Think about the parent's I had, and the people I thought we might have been had we not had the ones we did, thought about how I was going to get out of this mess with Ace, thought about how happy I was to be In Castle Rock.

And I thought about how much longer I could keep kidding myself that I wasn't completely and hopelessly in love, with Chris Chambers.

I started writing at 8 look up and its Ten :P. hope you liked it, I really liked writing this chapter.
