Disclaimer: Not mine, never will be mine and that makes me really sad D:
Protection from Nick seemed to be a rather good had seen me a time or two in the past couple days but nothing was done, or said to me. Part of me believed it was because of the protection but a bigger part felt that Ace just didn't want to bother right now. His court date was fast approaching and he obviously had another plan going. One I was sure he would put together soon and come after us once again.
I was on my way to Chris' house, he had told me to meet him around ten pm saying he wanted to hang out but had been stuck home all day cleaning by request of his dad. And by request I mean demand.
I reached the porch and knocked looking around his yard I waited for the door to open.
When it did I turned to see a shirtless figure, that wasn't chris.
"Eyeball?" I asked eyes widening. He was indeed shirtless, with a pair of jeans on he had obviously been sleeping since his hair was a mess. He leaned against the door frame on his left arm and raised an eyebrow at me. "What are you doing here?"
"I live here." he said pointedly. I wasn't that afraid of Eyeball, he was dangerous but he never really gave me a reason to fear him when he wasn't with Ace.
Autumn was supposedly friends with him still, and he had never threatened me or beaten me without Ace present. However he beat Chris from time to time so part of me always hated him.
"I thought you were with Ace?"
"Cracked Ribs." he said plainly, getting straight to the point. I nodded and kept standing there waiting for him to call Chris or move out of the way but he didn't. He didn't even blink.
"Uh Chris here?"
"don't know." he spoke without any emotion. It was getting more awkward by the moment but I wasn't going to leave.
"Can I come in?" I asked. He continued to stare. "What?!" I asked not really thinking, my temper getting the better of me.
He just shrugged. "Nothing."
Forget him if Chris wasn't here then I was leaving, I was not going to hang around with Eyeball until he decided he had a problem with me on his porch and did something about it.
"Anna?" Chris' voice came from the house. "Hey." Chris said coming to the doorway giving his brother an odd and confused look. However Eyeball didn't leave, he stayed leaned up against the doorway.
"Uh, hey." I said, Eyeball had shifted enough to let Chris into the doorway as well but he was still there. I don't know if he was trying to be a typical annoying brother, if he was planning something or just didn't feel like leaving. What ever his reason it was making me uncomfortable.
"You know you two match." Eyeball suddenly said.
"What?" Chris asked raising his eyebrow. Eyeball pointed to his face then mine then back again.
"You match, black eyes, you match." he explained, Chris glared at him, but his brother just grinned like he had made the funniest joke in the world and walked back inside.
"What the heck was that about?" I asked.
"uh, he's been acting a little weird lately. He's usually distant and cold but lately he's been actually talking to me."
"really?' I asked. Chris nodded.
"Yeah, I think it's because of Anna, you know Ace's best friend, girl he likes is friends with us."
"So even tough gang leaders want their friends to find out if a girl likes him." I joked, Chris smiled. He was still dressed obviously expecting me but he didn't look ready to go anywhere he looked really tiered but the healing bruises under his eyes made him look like he had bags anyways.
"I don't think its that specifically."
"What worries me is what he is planning since I still have that damn key."
"He ain't gonna come near you as long as Nick is keeping his promise."
"What do you mean?"
"I heard Eyeball talking to Ace yesterday, apparently Nick paid him a visit.'
"What happened?"
"Who knows?" Chris shrugged, it got me thinking though, Ace wasn't one to just back down, so either Nick was a lot more intimidating then I thought, or Ace just wants him to think he's doing his job.
"Hey come on lets go inside.' Chris said motioning for me to step into his house.
"You want to hang out here?"
"Eyeball is going to sleep and my Dad ain't here."
"And if he comes home?" Chris smirked and stepped into the house after me.
"I didn't teach you to fight for nothing." he joked, I rolled my eyes but prayed he was just kidding and not just hoping his dad wouldn't come home.
Chris' house did look better from when I last saw it, no liquor bottles, no garbage or old newspapers laying around, and no cigarette haze thanks to an open window.
However there were still stains on the carpet and couch and the walls paint was peeling and chipped but there wasn't much he could do about that.
"So what do you want to do?" I asked.
"Well we can watch TV and eat pizza." he said walking into the kitchen, me following closely behind him, there was a box of Pizza on the counter, Chris pulled out two plates and handed me one and a slice of Pizza.
We ended up sitting on the couch watching some stupid movie, I'm not sure It was half over when we turned it on and Chris happened to be distracting me.
"Chris knock it off." I laughed as he began to kiss my neck and shoulder.
"I'm bored." I laughed again.
"You were the one that suggested this."
"I regret it now." he whispered he began to lightly kiss up and down my neck again and I tried my best to ignore him. Not that I wasn't opposed to what he was doing but I was opposed to his Brother being in the next room who, even with cracked ribs, had no problem getting out of bed.
He lightly nibbled on my neck and I turned to scold him again but he didn't waste a moment pressing his lips to mine. Leaning me back against the arm rest of the couch Chris kissed me like it was his last chance to hands gripping my hips and body pressing into mine keeping me in place.
I kissed back, slipping one hand to the back of his neck, the other trying to support myself from falling down the arm rest.
His fingers dug into my hips, my hand held his neck hard in my hand holding him to me.
I was hoping that it would last longer but Chris' phone started to ring.
"Goddamn it." he cursed pulling away.
"Answer it it could be a problem." I said, he frowned but stood up and grabbed the phone in the kitchen.
"Yeah?" I heard him ask into the phone. "What? no. . . . why?" he leaned into the doorway motioning for me to come closer.
I joined him in the kitchen and raised an eyebrow in question. He placed his hand over the mouth piece of the phone and whispered "Go get the mail."
"Whose on the phone?"
"Gordie." he replied, I nodded and went out his front door and reached into his mailbox pulling out a number of letters and some junk mail.
I walked back into the kitchen and handed him the mail, he was off the phone now and didn't waste anytime he flipped through the letters obviously looking for something.
"Gordie send you a letter?' I asked confused.
"No he told me to check the mail. . . for this." he said holding up a letter addressed to him.
"what is it?" I asked. He opened it without another word and with a quick glance through he looked handed it to me. I took the letter gingerly, almost scared to read it.
Dear Mr. Chambers,
you are here by required to attend the following court date. . .
I didn't need to read anymore. I knew whose court date the letter was referring too. I put the letter down and looked at Chris.
"Think I'll have to go too?" I asked.
"I think I might drag you there even if you don't." he muttered. I didn't know exactly why we were needed to be there but I knew Ace had requested that we be there.
"This was supposed to end when the court date came!" He exclaimed throwing his head in his hands.
"Well look on the bright side, you want to be a lawyer, here's your first day of court." he looked up and glared at me, not my best moment for a joke this bothered him. Chris wanted nothing more then to be left alone, and this court date was supposed to give him that, I could tell he was scared. Scared that he was going to get dragged into this and maybe be the reason Ace doesn't get his jail time it scared him.
"Why does Gordie have to go?' I asked, I could understand us, I mean Ace could easily blame us for anything that went down. I mean I was a known gambler by now and the Chambers family has been labeled since birth it seems. It wouldn't be hard to blame something on us, but Gordie? He wasn't a bad kid, he was one of the decent ones in town, even hanging out with Chris and Teddy hadn't ruined that for him.
"Ace could want to get him back for a number of reasons." Chris sighed. "Gordie, held a gun to him, he tripped him before, pulled a couple pranks on him. . . God It could just be because he knows me."
"well you know what there's nothing we can do about it." I said running a hand through my hair. "We gotta show up."
"I just wish this would go away."
"Me too, but hell we knew that it wasn't the end when we got beat up. And he can't exactly get us put in jail or hurt us in a court room."
"Yeah I guess."
"Come on lets just forget about it for a moment okay?" I almost begged, Chris was stressed and I was already scared for his health with the bruises I didn't want him to be stressed out too.
"but-"
"No buts, lets just forget for a day, okay?" he looked at me and after a few moments smiled.
"Okay. Lets go.' Chris pushed off the counter and took off towards the door.
"Wait what? I thought you wanted to stay here?" I asked following him despite my words.
"Nah lets get out of here." he pulled out his keys and opened to doors to his truck.
"Where?"
"Somewhere we can forget." he grinned.
…...
"You brought me to deserted road next to a deserted field" I said.
"Yeah so?" he asked getting out of the car smiling. I leaned out the window as he went to the bed of the truck.
"This looks like a place to toss a body." I said, he laughed, his voice cutting through the quiet night.
"Don't worry they're covered by the tall grass, you can't see them."
"I will if I'm lying with them!" I called back.
"Anna, just get out of the truck."
"You know we just barely made it out alive from our beatings. Now you just want to throw us out in the open of a possible murders?"
"Murders are scared of the chambers!" he yelled back with a chuckle.
"I'm not a chambers!"
"Anna get out of the truck!" he finally yelled exasperated.
I pushed open the door and stepped out onto the paved road. It really was deserted, no lights could be seen and open fields lay on either side of the road, the forest in the distance.
"We're gonna die out here." I said walking towards him at the end of the truck.
He rolled his eyes, "You're more likely to die in the town and you know it."
"Doesn't mean I can't die out here."
"Anna."
"Fine what ever." I said "what are we doing?" he smiled and climbed into the bed of the truck, in which he pulled out a sleeping bag and unrolled it.
"Your very own body bag." he smiled. "I'm joking!' he laughed seeing my glare. He laid down on the opened sleeping bag and patted beside him. 'Come on." I sighed and laid down beside him. Looking up at the sky I was shocked.
'Oh wow." I whispered.
"Yeah, hard to see them even in a small town like ours. This is the only place with no trees blocking, or lights, or houses just clear sky." Chris wrapped his arm around my shoulders and I leaned into his touch.
"Its amazing." The stars were beautiful, something that I couldn't describe, it was like we were looking into another world. Little lights, never moving, clustered together in intricate images, a beautiful chaos, no structure no purpose just there, just being. To be enjoyed and beautiful.
"You know I heard once that each star is a soul passed on." chris said into my hair, placing a kiss on my head. "I like to think that, that there is something else after we die, to go into the heavens and be above everyone. Watching them like they watch us."
"My dad told me that there's a science to everything. But I don't think there's an explanation for everything. I like to think there is more to it."
"Me too. Sometimes I just want to believe, and not have to question everything." Chris and I were those kinds of people. The people that ask questions and over think everything, those kids that grew up in the real world, we grew up too fast to enjoy belief or innocence so we look for answers in everything.
"This is nice." I sighed cuddling closer to his side. We laid there in silence the only sounds were crickets and our breathing.
"I'm never going to leave you Anna." he said suddenly. "Not like anyone else."
"My mom is gone, Will is gone, my dad's gone. I have no reason to believe you. But for some reason I do." I said. He grinned at me.
"You know you're supposed to tell me you'll never leave me either."
"Where could I go? My life is with you now."
"I don't now what I would do if you hadn't moved here."
"Well for one, you probably wouldn't have a trouble making girlfriend." he laughed and nodded pulling me that little bit closer to him.
"That's true."
"You know we're pretty messed up." he was silent for a moment thinking about it.
"That just means we're more interesting. And our trust is that much stronger."
'When did you get so deep chambers?" I questioned.
"Some time you did, Winston." he shot back. This was amazing, just us, talking and joking, sharing the thoughts we could never speak before anyone else.
Chris and I's relationship was crazy, it was stupid and made no sense. But for some reason we couldn't leave each other.
He pissed me off and I annoyed him, we got each other into trouble and could not get a handle on any situation. Yet here we were together, because we knew that even though things were hard together they would be worse without each other.
"You tell anyone about this and I'll deny it." he whispered to me. I leaned up and kissed him lightly.
"Me too."
Here we were vulnerable, but it wasn't the real world, it was a fantasy. In the real world we needed to be Tough. We needed to be Chambers and Winston, not like here, where we were Chris and Anna.
Again I apologize, Exams end next week so I will hopefully update ON TIME!
So so so so so so sorry!
Lots of love – lexi.
