Chapter 2. A being of light
What is my mission in this world?
"Careful!"
A little boy of about eight years old, let out a scream as he fell backwards on the sidewalk, since he was stopped by "something", a mysterious force that had pulled him by the hood of his sweatshirt to prevent him from crossing that street where a car was going at full speed.
And so, that little boy was saved from having a fatal traffic accident.
"Be more careful! Don't cross the street without checking both sides! Also never cross on the sides, always go to the corner or go to the nearest traffic light!" Said that voice while he caressed the hair of that child.
That little boy turned to see his savior, but when he did this, there was no one behind him.
"I know you can't see me..." sighed the one who was speaking "But I can see you, so please, take care. I wouldn't like to be the one who has to guide you towards 'the light'" commented a guy with pink hair, tall and dressed in casual clothes but in white tones.
That boy named Itadori Yuji, could be called by some as "an angel", but he still didn't have wings.
He could also enter the category of "a being of light", since at times, he emitted a bright and warm aura, but it was still not as intense as that of the other angels.
He really didn't even know what kind of being he was. The only thing this boy was sure of was that he was still in the land of mortals, perhaps to fulfill some mission before going "to heaven". So that angel spent his time helping every mortal he came across.
Apparently, Itadori could only be seen by a few people, especially by children under five years of age, or those people who had some "gift" to see the supernatural.
This angel also helped the elderly, taking care of them when crossing the street or if they died, he would guide them to the church so that the archangel Satoru would guide them "to their final destination".
Itadori was a kind being, who was willing to help even the most defenseless, including animals.
That being took a black bag that was moving inside a trash can in that residential area. The noise and the movements that came out of it had caught his attention.
Although Itadori couldn't be seen or heard, he could for some strange reason move and take the objects.
When he knocked over the trash can and ripped the bag, he realized that someone had abandoned a small, malnourished white kitten to its fate.
"Can you see me?" he asked that animal, who responded with a weak meow as the poor cat was starving.
"If you don't eat something soon or if you don't find shelter quickly, you'll die..." Itadori said worriedly "Who can be so heartless as to do this to an innocent?"
That cat meowed weakly.
"But I can't let you die either, apparently it's your first life and you deserve to live it" he said stroking the white fur of that animal.
Itadori had to help that poor cat, so he making some noise with the cans that he had nearby.
The scandal he made caught the attention of a neighbor in the area, who found that cat, but did not want to take pity on him.
"Do not be like that! Please help him!" Itadori sounded annoyed as he pulled that woman's shoulder so that she would turn back.
That woman felt that strange pull, but when she turned around, there was no one behind her.
That only made her get scared and run out of there.
Also for some strange reason, Itadori could touch people, but whenever they turned around, they didn't see anyone behind them. They only felt the presence of "something", but that something was always invisible to their eyes.
Yuji sighed in discouragement, he also had to see how many people were bad and didn't help others and they liked to do and wish evil on those around them.
"I'm sorry, little friend... sometimes humans are so bad, that they themselves are monsters without salvation" Itadori commented sadly, watching how that kitten's eyes become dull.
The "soul" of that animal came out of its body in the form of a small sphere of light. Unlike men, the animals and children who died before the age of three, being beings so innocent and without evil, their souls went directly to heaven without the need to be guided by the archangel Satoru.
"I'll see you up there buddy."
Itadori said goodbye when he saw that this small sphere of light, which surrounded him with curiosity, was rising to the sky, like a bubble floating freely by the wind.
"Wow, when animals die in these circumstances, the farewells tend to be sadder, they really are very pure beings" commented a female voice above him.
"Too sad I would say" Itadori sighed "And by the way, Hana, are you going to stop playing with my hair? It's not funny that you take advantage of your wings!" He answered, raising and moving his hands, to push away that girl who was flying over his head.
Hana Kurusu was going through the same situation as Itadori.
Nor did she know exactly why she was still in the earthly world or what her mission was before to go to heaven where winged beings like her were supposed to be.
She had wings and a halo on her head, but she, for some strange reason, did not shine or emit any light.
And unlike Itadori, she couldn't touch or move material things, but she could touch people, but she wasn't seen by them either.
But surprisingly she could be heard by those who had a very fine and highly developed sense of hearing.
"Sorry, hehe, it's just that I like to bother you" she replied with a smile as she put her feet on the ground.
"And why did you come looking for me? Have you already met your daily quota of people saved?" Itadori asked putting his hands in his pockets and starting to walk.
"It could be that my daily quota is already covered for today, helping the elderly should give extra points" she said with a smile as she tried to keep up with Itadori, who was surprisingly a being that moved very fast.
"And why I came to look for you, is because the archangel Satoru has called to me, you and Yuta, since he wants to see the three of us in the church once the night sky completely covers the celestial vault" She comment flying to the side of Itadori.
"Do you want to see the three of us? And for what?" Itadori asked surprised while he stopped behind several people who were waiting for the pedestrian to follow.
"He didn't give any more details, she just asked me to look for you two" Hana shrugged her shoulders "Maybe she'll finally give us the news that we'll finally go "paradise", that's the only thing I can imagine" she commented with a smile .
"I wonder what paradise will be like?" Itadori replied with a smile "And by the way? Where is Yuta?" he asked curiously.
Hana shook her head. "I haven't been able to find him, surely he must be out there finishing his save quotas or he must be eliminating demons" he commented from the air.
Yuta unlike those two, seemed to be more of a "messenger of that divine force". He was a being that shined too much when some miracle had to happen.
He had a very special glow and aura, but unlike Hana, Yuta could appear and disappear his wings at will. But what he didn't have was a halo over his head.
Yuta could also touch people and could even move objects. He could be seen by all kinds of people, from children, adults and the elderly, but above all, he was seen by those mortals who were on the brink of death.
And on some occasions, he could be heard by mortals. In the words of the archangel Satoru, Yuta was the one who came closest to the concept of "Angel", since even he was in charge of taking care of the mortals of the beings that lived in the shadows.
But he, like those two, did not know why he was still in the mortal realm, much less understood why he was not promoted in grade or why he still could not enter heaven.
"Okay, let's go to Satoru's call. It must be something very important that he must tell us for him to call the three of us."
Itadori answered, while both beings of light continued on their way. Entering those streets where they could reach their sanctuary. A church that was inside a beautiful park.
Megumi really felt lost in his thoughts, besides that the night watches were already taking their toll on his body.
The poor man felt too tired as he walked through those crowded streets, carrying his raincoat and umbrella on his right arm, while on his left shoulder he carried his backpack.
The poor Megumi felt with a terrible taste in his mouth due to the courage he had shown at the solution that his boss Takeda was giving him.
This was an unfair settlement for him. A break he didn't ask for just to make it look like he'd been expelled from the clinic.
Not only was he too upset with what had happened with that owner, but he also couldn't get the whole situation with that stray dog out of his head.
Seeing all that blood and the situation of that poor animal brought back a bitter memory from his childhood that he thought he had already blocked from his mind.
Megumi kept walking, while looking at his hands.
"Mother!"
He remembered his innocent voice, he even remembered all those bad feelings, while he still vividly remembered that blood on his little hands when he was a child. He remembered how scared he was.
"Megumi..." He heard his mother's voice name him in his lucid memories. The exhaustion was consuming him and it was bringing back very bad memories of him when he was a child.
At that moment, Fushiguro noticed that because he was so tired and distracted, he had not realized that he had gone to a part of the city that he had not visited for years since his mother's death.
Maybe he had gotten there by inertia.
He had reached a bridge that adorned a part of that residential area and that started that park within the city.
Megumi remembered that when he was a child he used to go to that park with his mother and sister. He also remembered that in its center there was a very beautiful church where his mother liked to go to pray.
Being at the entrance of that park brought back many memories of her late mother. She was a very believing woman, full of faith, she was simply a being of light that her destiny decided to cruelly snatch her away when he was ten years old.
All of that made Megumi more nostalgic, as he watched the people go by.
"Look mommy! The river grew, the fish can be seen from here!" He hear a child say, while that little one climbed the railing to see that current.
Quickly that woman took her son by the arm and pulled him towards her. "Don't get on there! If you fall, it is very likely that the current will take you... Come on, many people have died here" she said, taking him by the hand.
Megumi approached that railing and observed what that child had said.
It was true, the current of that river had grown a lot in recent days due to the rains. Megumi looked at her reflection as she watched that current run strong. Capable of dragging an adult to the depths.
"Jump" —a voice began to whisper in his ear— "This way you could put an end to your suffering that you've been dragging along for years. Maybe that way you'll stop being a hindrance to your father. Only maybe that way you'll see your Mother again" ...
A voice inside him screamed at those sentences. He had a great impulse to want to jump. To end his life as many people had done in that place.
He was observing that current and that place for a few more moments, until he realized that there was no one near him at that moment.
He took off his backpack and left it on the ground and next to it, he left his umbrella and his raincoat. In case he disappeared, he knew that there was enough information about him in his backpack, since there was his school ID and his sister's number. At that moment, he didn't even think or consider how sad Tsumiki would be if he ended up killingself. He would just leave her alone in this cruel world.
He just wanted to find the peace he so longed for... He was just thinking of the easiest solution to end all his suffering and misery.
Megumi leaned forward slightly, climbing higher on that rail. She seemed immersed in that fatal thought.
"Come on! Do it, end all your suffering!" "Jump"
His inner voice kept screaming as he started to raise her foot to cross to the other side. His unhappiness continued to deceive him in order to end his life.
He stayed like that for a few minutes, while he waited for the best moment to jump into that dangerous current.
"Maybe just like that..."
"WAIT! DO NOT DO IT! AN ATTEMPT ON YOUR LIFE IS WRONG!" a voice yelled at him. Megumi felt something or someone pulling him strongly backwards.
That person must have been someone extremely strong to lift a guy over tall like him and drag him behind that railing to make him safe.
Megumi was abruptly thrown to the ground once he was saved from jumping into the current, his body ached from that pull and he felt his head spinning as his gaze focused on his savior. He could make out a boy fully dressed in casual clothes, it was someone with pink hair who was crouching in front of him.
Megumi had to focus his eyes a bit, his vision was blurred, perhaps it was the sun that made that boy shine so much.
That light made it difficult for him to see the face of his savior, but from his voice, he detected that it was someone about his age, but that voice also had something special, it had a touch that made him calm, it was a melodious and sweet voice.
"Are you OK? Sorry if I was too abrupt when I pulled your shirt, but ending your life is not the solution!"
"Who are you?" Megumi asked, covering his forehead with his hand to try to stop the light from blinding him.
"Oh! can you see and hear me?!" Can you really see and hear me? You are the first young man who can see me! Hana, this boy can see and hear me!— Itadori commented very excited.
Megumi was confused, he didn't see or hear anyone else next to that guy.
"TRUE! Are you OK? Let me help you!" Itadori took Megumi's hand and helped his stand up, while his glow was fading little by little.
Megumi's vision was still not focusing well on that boy's face, perhaps it was due to the accumulated fatigue and the fact that he was still dazed from the blow he had received and perhaps that was why he still could not see his savior's face clearly.
That boy seemed to be surrounded by a strangely comfortable aura. And that made the vet not want to let go of that hand for some strange reason.
"Thank you... I'm fine now, it's just tired, I just reached my lowest point and I was thinking about following that fleeting impulse of wanting to end everything" Megumi began to say, trying to look at his savior, but his vision was still blurry.
"If you feel tired, you should go home and sleep, if you feel sick, you should go to the doctor, maybe he can give you something for physical discomfort, but as I always say, if you feel negative impulses to attempt against your life, you should go to the sanctuary of the soul, you should go to the church, there perhaps your interior will find some answer to your deepest concerns"— Itadori began to make signs with his free hand, as he continued to hold Fushiguro's hand with his right hand.—"There is a very nice Church very close to here, you just have to keep walking along this path for about ten more minutes and you will be able to see the church that belongs to this park, maybe you just need to talk to the one above to help you with your concerns" Itadori commented with a big smile.
That gesture and words bothered Megumi, who let go of the hand of her savior who seemed to be another religious fanatic.
He closed his eyes with force for a moment to see if his sight was restored, while he responded annoyed by that comment.
"LIKE I SAID, THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND I KNOW I'LL BE FINE! I DON'T NEED TO GO TO..." he opened his eyes and to his surprise, he already saw clearly, but his "savior" was no longer there.
"Huh?"
It came out of his mouth. Megumi was really confused. His sight was now restored but he didn't see that guy who had saved him at all.
He looked to one side, he looked to the other, but there was no one near him at that moment.
"Couldn't he have gone so fast? Or if? Or will she be like Maki? An athlete who runs very fast and has superhuman strength?" He questioned very confused while he saw how people passed. Maybe he was going crazy.
Megumi put his hand to his head. Perhaps exhaustion was consuming him. Maybe he just needed to rest.
"Could it have been a thief? A street scam?" he questioned himself, quickly putting his hands to the bags of his medical gown, but everything was still intact.
Both his cell phone and his wallet were still in their place, as well as his backpack, his umbrella, and his raincoat were still on the ground. And his things inside his backpack were still intact.
"So if that boy wasn't a thief, or a normal person... Then I doubt it was a ghost... I don't think it was idiocy like that they say there is in these places" He took the hand to his chest, he wanted to dismiss the most illogical idea he could think of.
When he brought his hand to his chest, he felt that silver cross on his skin.
He hold tightly that gift from his mother. I doubt for a moment if he should go see that church. Maybe that stranger was right, maybe he could find answers in that holy place.
But in the end, Megumi better decided to go home...
