Thank you all for making it this far! This is probably one of the better chapters! Thank you for your reviews!
Also, I got 33rd place in the mythology test at the NATIONAL LATIN CONVENTION! (which is out of about 1,700 people who took it)So I know my mythology!
"A quest?" Asked Neville. "With knights and dragons and holy grails? That kind of quest?"
Percy leaned back into his folding chair. "Well, If you replace knights with all of us, maybe not the dragon, it could be some other monster or in my case some relative of mine*... Add in a few other monsters wanting to rip you to shreds and keep in the search for a lost object or person and usually some sort or godly intervention along the way." Percy added.
The wizards in the room grew visibly paler and Mia punched Percy in the arm. She shot him a look that said not necessary horse head!**
Annabeth, who for the first time that Draco had seen, was being deadly serious. "So what is this quest you'll be sending us on?"
Mr.D waved dismissively at the blondes and returned his free hand to his can of soda. "Now if I told you that it would ruin half the fun. You should know the rules by now. Go consult the Oracle and get out of my hair, Annalise."
"It's Annabeth sir."
He rolled his eyes and went back to nursing his beverage.
Exasperated, the five of them walked out of the big house.
"So we're going to go fight pirates or something?" Draco sneered. He was not in a good mood after hearing about the possibility of getting ripped to shreds.
"Maybe not pirates maybe just a harpy or two. And not even all of them spit out poisonous acid or anything! Most of the time you just have to worry about the claws and the teeth." Percy chirped. He was having fun freaking them out. "Don't worry it's not all that bad as long as you don't get killed."
"KILLED? We can be bloody murdered!" Draco protested.
Annabeth punched the startled looking blonde in the arm. "Relax. We don't even know what we'll be doing. Besides you and Neville have freaking magic powers, and levitation and all that crap. You've got nothing to worry about." She smiled. I hope she thought.
"Except for the ministry coming after our arses." Neville mumbled under his breath.
Mia slung an arm around his shoulder. "Don't worry. If I can make it out here all this time then so can you." She slipped effortlessly from her American accent t to her British one. She gave him a quick hug before dislodging herself completely. "Now, Annabeth and I have a mummified old hippy lady to consult so you guys bond with Percy or something and we'll be back soon."
The two girls went off on their own and Neville turned to Percy.
"Did she just say mummified hippie lady?"
"Yeah, smells horrible too."
"Is that really what your oracles are?" Added Draco.
"Not much different than ours." Neville added thinking of the divination teacher back home.
"Come on." Percy urged on. "We're going to play capture the flag tonight. And as of now you guys are officially in Poseidon cabin! And I don't want anyone dragging me down."
Draco followed him until a certain female bumped Ito him. "Oi! Watch where you're going!" He shouted. Percy cringed and the girl's jaw dropped. Then she started to laugh.
"So is this One of the newbies?" Draco was spun around to face an incredibly beautiful, if not incredibly over done girl. Her hair was professionally curled. And her glitter eyeliner was...distracting.
Percy rolled his eyes at the girl.
She turned his face away for her in order to study him from another angle." Cute, But He's a little pale if you ask me but we can work on that."
Draco brushed her hand away in annoyance and backed away, like most people, he didn't like being examined like a piece of meat. "Excused me but no one did ask you. "
She gasped and giggled in delight. "He's British too! I love it!"
Neville cast a worrying glance from the girl to Percy in a does she always do this? Sort of way. He knew girls like that caused nothing but trouble.
Like a carnivorous Barbie doll she noticed the unease in Percy's new companion. "That's the other one right?" Neville shifted uncomfortably.
"Just layoff Drew." Percy groaned. "Don't you need to touch up your roots or something?"
She glared at him. "oh Jackson, I think you need to get a new attitude, you can add that to your grocery list along with a life."
Percy fell to his knees and clutched his gut in mock agony.
"That one really hurt! Oh the burn! The burnnnnn!"
Drew rolled her eyes and strutted away.
"Sweet she's gone. Sorry about that. She's the second in command of Aphrodite cabin and the camp's resistant gossip."
"The goddess of love?" Neville ventured.
"Yeah." Percy sighed. "But don't sweat it they're not all like that. Selena's actually really nice, and she won't attack you with killer lip-gloss."
For what seemed to be the hundredth time today the two wizards figured that it would be best not to ask questions.
"Besides, you guys have some bigger issues. By the game tonight girls in the camp will be on the lookout for the new British guys. So be careful. Don't accept candy from strangers and try not to piss off the huge girl with the electric spear on your first day. "He put his arms around both of their shoulders." That's my first lesson young grasshoppers. But never mind that. We've gotta get you two trained for later."
What Neville and Draco didn't realize was What Percy meant by 'trained' was actually getting spare armor, a weapon, and basic sword fighting all in three hours.
Now evilly and Draco knew what muggle irons must have felt like when they first entered the wizard world. Everything at the camp was so wonderful and fascinating. They gawked at everything like cheesy tourists. It was all...magical... It was a ridiculous notation to have when they both could actually produce magic but it was true. There were pegasī in the stables being attended to. Trees turned into lovely women right before their eyes, everyone was dressed in a mixture of normal muggle clothes and combat gear, and the rock wall spewed lava!
Percy trained them hard. First by making them fight against each other to make them both simultaneously attack him. While they swiped and stabbed at him he would dodge and shout suggestions and instruction at them. Their arms felt like lead and both of the boys were shortly out of breath. But Percy made them go again and again.
After that they went over the plan with their allies, Aphrodite cabin, Hephaestus cabin, and Ares cabin. Neville had a hard time figuring out all of the battle jargon the half-bloods kept using so kept his mouth shut and tried to come to terms with the situation he was in. He was a British teenage wizard on vacation with two girls he had only recently met before they were all kidnapped by fish horses and now he was suited up in Ancient Greek armor getting ready for a game of "capture the flag" which actually meant war games. He kept trying to figure it out but it wasn't long before someone called his name.
Percy pointed to a rock formation in the middle of the woods. "You two stay here and avoid trouble. Just scream if something goes wrong and another person will be with you if anything happens."
A very large intimidating girl snorted in disgust. "I'm not sparing anyone from my cabin to babysit the newbies."
"Well I didn't ask you to volunteer anyone, Clarisse." Percy retorted. Before another argument broke out the girl Neville saw earlier spoke up.
"I'll stay back!" Neville had no idea that Louis Vuitton made Ancient Greek armor.
The girl Drew sauntered over to where the "newbies" we're standing. Neville was visibly uncomfortable and Draco made no effort to mask his cringe.
Maybe she'll get bored and leave me alone. Neville silently prayed. Luckily for him that was exactly what happened. She left them in a pink furry only minutes later. Something about someone else wearing the same arm our as her?
Malfoy planted his sword in the ground and sat on the pile of rocks. "Interesting day hasn't it been Longbottom." He sat down and reclined against the hard stone surface.
Neville shrugged, uncomfortable with his conversation partner. "Yeah I guess so. "
"Who would have thought that I'd be stuck in some place called camp half- blood with you of all people." He sneered.
"I'm not exactly thrilled either, but if Annabeth and Mia can put up with you then so can I." Neville snapped back.
Malfoy held up his hands defensively. "I didn't mean it to come off that way."
Neville frowned. "It did."
There was a lingering silence between the two before Neville decided to break it. He had wanted to say something since the beginning of the school year but only now did he find the words.
He glared at the blonde boy in front of him the same boy who had bullied him for years was now stuck with him in what seemed to be the beginning of a life or death mission on foreign land. "You know you really are something else. You've been nothing but horrible to me since first year, and two girls show up out of nowhere and all of a sudden you start acting like a decent human being. Who are you trying to impress?" he yelled.
Malfoy snapped back in his usual manner. "It's none of your business."
"It is if it involves my friends!" Neville shouted back.
"They're my friends too!" It didn't take a genius to see the genuine frustration in Malfoy's eyes.
Neville tried to calm down a bit and chose his words carefully. "Look, we are about to go on a quest, in America none the less, and our lives might be endangered. I would like to know your motives before I can trust you with my life if it comes down to it.
Malfoy's face darkened. "I've known Astoria since we were little. We grew up together for the most part, and when we were young she would sneak out into the real world all by herself because I was too afraid. She would tell me all about muggles and what their world was like. My parents. "He took a deep breath before he continued. "My parents were horrible and nothing's changed, but she was the only positive influence in my life. So when I thought that she was…dead…I couldn't think about her or anything that had had to do with her without becoming depressed. I turned bitter and took it out on all of you, alright! It's taking me awhile to break out of my old habits but I'm trying to fix myself!"
The heavy silence hung in the air. Neville could tell that Malfoy had just admitted more to him than he had to himself at this point.
He was about to say something before something moved in his peripheral vision. Malfoy caught on and stood up. Neville, realizing that he was reaching for a wand that wasn't there awkwardly drew his sword instead. Draco followed suit.
* Hasn't anyone else noticed how many son of the sea god monsters there have been in the books?
** Horse head is Mia's version of Seaweed brain.
