Chapter 22: Closed doors, but New opportunities
Kori didn't know what she felt right now. Combining all the words or phrases in all languages, she probably still couldn't come up with something as to describe her current state.
Heart broken? Betrayal? Cheated? She couldn't fathom any of it, but knew she felt all of such.
Fuck school. She had a perfect attendance record so it wouldn't hurt if she missed one day. No doubt her parents would be upset with her, but they'd understand.
She didn't bother to get a ride. Victor gladly would've provided one or anybody really, but Kori preferred to walk. Maybe walking would help her clear her mind. Clutching her history books in her hand and sniffling, tears streamed down her face as she shuffled down the sidewalk.
A loud honk echoed down the road and it was a car Kori didn't recognize. Slowly, the blue sedan pulled up beside her and the tinted windows rolled down revealing someone.
"What the hell happened to you?" A gruff voice asked. Kori looked at her and lifted her hand to wipe away her tears.
"Nothing I wish to discuss right now."
Rose peered at her with her one visible eye and hummed. She couldn't pressure her to speak, but nonetheless she was alright with Kori for the small moments she's known her. "Hop in Kori."
"No, I'm fine with walki-" Kori glanced around, but seeing Rose's smirking face she knew there was no way to advert this. Sighing, Kori opened the passenger door and slid inside as Rose took off.
"Alright spill." Rose spoke, turning a curve and heading downtown. Kori looked at her and twiddled her fingers.
"Well...it's my boyfriend."
Rose let out a snort and quirked her articulate eyebrows at the redhead, "Trouble in paradise, huh?"
"You have no idea. Ever since the beginning of the school year, Richard has changed. He was my bestfriend and he became some womanizing playboy that would always break his promises. We were going out for quite some time and I thought he really loved me but..." Kori sighed and looked out the window. "I guess he will always break his promises."
Rose looked at her somberly. Yeah she was a tough nut, but the girl did have a heart. Rose reached over and placed a hand on Kori's shoulder while using the other to steer,
"It's alright. Look the guy obviously done fucked up. But guys are like that sometimes. Y'know they get their dicks confused for their brain and just let that drive them"
Kori smiled lightly at Rose. She sure had a way of cheering a gal up.
"Thank you Rose. "
She shrugged giving a smirk, "No prob. Hey, aren't you supposed to be in school miss goody two shoes?"
Kori blushed, and spoke flusteredly,"Yes, but I decided to skip."
"Ooooo Kori so naughty." Rose laughed, "But I do that a lot too. I should be across the country right now finishing up the semester for that stuck up High Hive Academy, but eh I figured not."
Kori looked at her with squinted eyes,"Is High Hive a horrible school?"
Rose shook her head and pulled up to a gas station. "Nah, but it's pretty strict. Why ask?"
"I applied for the school. I don't know if I've gotten in yet, but I was only wondering. I don't know whether to go yet or not if so..."
Rose hummed and put the car in park before looking at Kori. "Kori it's a really good school. Yeah, I ditch, but that's because I'm me. But I can totally see you walking around all fancy in that place."
Kori giggled, "Thank you."
With one final grin, Rose stepped out of the car to buy the two a drink.
. . .
"Where's Kori?" Rachel asked.
Karen looked up from the book the English class was reading and looked around the room. "I don't know. I thought she was here actually."
Reaching over to Victor with her foot, she kicked his hip making him yelp. Hearing the talking, the rest of the group who all shared English together, looked at her.
"Yo. Do y'all know where homegirls at?" Bee asked.
Gar wrinkled his nose and looked about the room. "No. She wasn't in class earlier either."
"Or gym." Connor added, with a perplexed tone. Artemis shook her head.
"She wasn't in math either."
"Why the hell are we just now figuring this out anyways?" Jade snapped.
"Shhhhhhh!"
All eyes in the group looked to as he glared at the gang. Sheepishly, they began to whisper,
"Wait..where's Dick?" Roy asked. A groan arised from the back and Wally smacked his head into the desk and muttered.
Hesitantly, an understanding was made. Something was wrong. Wally was quiet, Kori and Dick were missing, and with the emergency text messages being sent to the both of them, not a single reply was responded to.
"Wally..." Artemis cooed, coming to his side and stroking his back.
Slowly, he looked up at her and she frowned. He looked sad and that wasn't comforting at all.
"Wally, do you know about what's going on?"
Wally looked over at Garth who asked the question and sighed. "I think I fucked up everything."
"What are you talking about?" Growled Bee.
"Shhh!"
Bee whipped her head at Mr. Blood and glared at him.
"Miss Beecher why are you talking during my lecture!?"
"Well why are you teaching during my discussion?!" Karen hissed back making him awkwardly cough.
"C'mon Wally what happened?" Gar persisted, crossing his arms. Wally looked at all of them and groaned.
And so Wally told what happened. The entire event on how he had made Richard test his playboy attitude on a hot blonde and Kori seeing the entire thing and leaving broken hearted and Richard being even more so.
In fact, Richard had watched Kori take off around the corner and he stuttered for a second before looking at Wally with a pure face of mortification. Honestly, Richard was ashamed and he knew he shouldn't have done the stupid bet. But all those words he said didn't mean anything. They were sweet little lies to help him secure those ten bucks. But after Kori left, Richard had walked away from the confused blonde then let out a rage filled despair and punched a good size crater into a locker then retreated into the locker rooms where nobody could hopefully see his tears.
. . .
"Thank you for the ride Rose!"
"No problem chica. Get your ass inside now before another creep watches you." Rose called with a laugh.
Kori giggled a bit and pulled her backpack to the side, reaching inside her pocket and pulling out the key to unlock the door.
All afternoon, Kori and Rose had swept the town and ventured the sights. The two had went to the amusement park, the mall, and even the arcade. At the arcade in fact, there was a large man with a handful of quarters that stared at Kori the entire time which made her very uncomfortable. Rose had noticed the ordeal and kicked the guy out the arcade by beating his high score on the dance dance revolution game he occupied.
Kori slowly unlocked the door and looked up noticing a man in her house with a blue uniform and a handful of roses and a small little teddy bear. He looked up at her and waved. "Greetings ma'am. Your sister I believe allowed me inside to deliver this to a -" he reached inside his frontal shirt pocket and pulled out a small index card reading it's content. "A Miss Korianndr's."
Kori nodded and placed her backpack down on a stack of fresh mail and envelopes that were sitting on the coffee table and walked over to the man.
"I'm Kori Anders. What is this?"
Her green eyes scanned across the items. A bouquet of red roses, a small box of chocolate, a container of mustard, and the stuffed animal.
"I don't know, but it looks like someone is awfully sorry to be sending you all of this." The man answered before offering up a clipboard and pen. "Sign here please."
Scribbling her name down and watching the man leave, Kori lightly touched the flowers and picked up a small folded paper that was inside.
Star I'm sorry. My promise stands, I do love you and always will ~Robin
Dammit, now she was sad again. Kori clutched the paper to her tightly and sighed. What was she supposed to do? She wanted to forgive him, but she felt done. He had hurt her enough. Had broken too many promises.
But she loved him.
"Ughh! X'hal Richard!" Kori yelled, grasping her hair between her finger tips and growling.
A vibrating sound caught her ear and she looked over on the kitchen counter. She forgot she had left her phone there. Walking across the tiled ground and picking up the phone, she gasped.
84 missed calls. And they were all from him.
A loud knock was at the door and she jumped. Did that delivery guy forget something? She blinked and placed her phone in her pocket and walked over to the door and peeked through the curtains to see who it was.
Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
Richard stood outside her cobblestoned doorway and timidly knocked. Kori normally would've opened the door for him, but oh not today. Not after what he's done to her.
With a huff, Kori walked up the stairs and went into her room leaving him alone.
. . .
Richard stood outside her door and knocked again and used the doorbell for what seemed like the thousandth time. He wasn't leaving until he talked to her. He had to explain what had happened. How it was just a stupid bet that he regretted with every fiber of his being.
Groaning and breathing with an exasperated exult, his eye caught the palm tree besides Kori's balcony that the boys had used to spy on the girls that one faithful night. Darting across the lawn, Richard grasped onto the tree trunk and climbed agily to the base and crept along the branches.
There she was. His angel, sitting on her bed and looking at the teddy bear he had requested for her to get in delivery.
Well Richard, it was now or never.
Taking a deep breath, Richard knocked on her window and she hopped off her bed and opened the curtains. Glaring at him with her majestic orbs, he swallowed a lump in his throat and watched sadly as she closed the curtains on him.
Wait, was she crying too?
"Star! Please come talk to me!"
He heard a sniffle. "No! Go away Richard."
Determined, he opened the window and hopped into her bedroom making her gasp.
"Richard why are you here? You know I don't want to speak with you right now." Kori said with as much bravado she could muster. Of course with the tears and her crouching form on the bed, it didn't work well.
Dick felt his heart wilt seeing her so upset. He never liked seeing her cry, but him being the cause of those tears made him feel even more unbearable then he already did.
"Baby, star please let me-"
"Do not dare call me that!" She hissed, standing up with a new found feeling. She sniffled and looked him in the eye. "I am not your baby. And I am not your star..."
Richard took a step toward her and shook his head. "Kori, god please no, you don't understand. I love you. Only you!"
He felt tears, hot ones going down his face, but he didn't care. He needed her to see how much he loved her. He needed her. As much as a person needs air to breathe and water to drink, Richard needed Kori to live.
Kori choked back a sob and took a shaky breath. "Richard I love you. But you have never loved me, I-"
"Fucking bullshit!" He roared, staring at her with his eyes intense. Such an intensity she's never seen before. In fact, the only time he's ever cried was when his parents past away. "Kori I do love you. I need you with me, by my side everyday. What happened was a stupid bet! I fucking love you and you alone!"
X'hal Kori loved him. She loved him so much.
But heartbreak was a bitch.
"Richard, I-"
Suddenly, Komi walked into the room, her hair short and eyes glaring. She looked Richard and Kori up and down, then looked back at Kori.
"Mom wants to talk with you. She said it's important. " Komi drawled out, holding her stack of mail.
Kori wanting to escape this argument as quickly as she could, nodded and gave a devastated Richard one last look before going down the stairs to see her mom standing there with a bright yellow envelope.
"Koriand'r" Her mother began. Kori swallowed and looked at her. Luan smiled at her and slid the envelope into her hands. "I'm very proud of you."
Confused, Kori looked at what she had handed her. Her eyes widened when she saw it was from HIVE academy. Quickly, Kori opened up the envelope, careful not to rip it and looked inside.
Dear Kori Anders,
Reviewing your art and your outstanding GPA score, we wish to congratulate you and your family on the acceptance of your application to HIVE Academy. We can't wait to welcome you to our district next spring.
Signed, Slade Wilson.
Kori dropped the note and looked at her mother who was beaming with pride. She was accepted. She did it.
God things were going to change.
"Aren't you happy my little bumgorf?" Luan asked, still very happy. Kori took a breath and nodded.
"Yes...I'm just surprised is all I suppose."
Luan squealed and looked at her daughter again, "Are you going to accept going?"
Kori didn't know. What she did know is that this was a horrible time to be asking her this. What did she do, what would she do? She had no idea, but she looked at her mom and gave a small weak smile.
"Yes. I will."
"Excellent! I can't wait to call your father and tell him of this excellent news! Your k'norfka will be excited to know you shall be living with him! " Luan laughed as she ran to the kitchen and used the phone.
Kori looked down at her palms and paled a bit. She was going to move. Move from all her friends and her school and the city she came to love.
Move from him.
She needed fresh air. Her head was spinning and she felt as if she was about to pass out. She stood up quickly and ran to the door and opened it to see Richard was standing there.
I guess he grew impatient with waiting for her.
"Kori, I need to talk to you."
"Richard, please not right now. I'm exhausted."
Dick sighed heavily and looked at her. "You never replied to me. Please Kori..." He took a step towards her and placed a hand on her cheek, his tears returning and making his blue eyes sparkle. "Please give me another godamn chance. I can't live without you..."
Kori covered her mouth and shook her head, feeling tears coming back to her. No, she wouldn't let her see him cry ever again. She was stronger then this.
"No Richard. I'm sorry..."
Before he could utter a word, Kori moved his hand from her face and closed the door.
Along with her heart.
. . .
Saturday evening, she moved without telling nobody.
