Chapter 7: Fresh Eyes

As was ordered, the crime scene was locked down. All access to the crime scene was blocked off, taped up and quieted by police barricades, and no one without HPD credentials were let within a full block radius of the art gallery. The rest of the businesses on the street were evacuated and the area was treated as if there was a chemical leak.

Max arrived on the scene looking exhausted as Charlie Fong and his supervisor arrived as well.

"Boys, you remember Mona?" Charlie asked as he and Mona Blainson entered the room where Steve and Danny still stood guard over the body.

"I do now," Danny said sheepishly remembering a previous conversation with the medical examiner. "I'm bad with names but I never forget a face - especially a pretty one." Danny added as he back peddled.

"It's going to take more than flattery to get you back into my good books after the last couple of days." Mona stated and stepped lightly around the room - scanning it for evidence and generally getting to know the lay of the land.

"This is not our fault." Danny protested.

"Someone thinks it is," Max piped in.

"There's no question that these are all by the same killer," Mona stated as she zeroed in on the body in the middle of the room. "These are well planned out and your killer wants you to know who he is. There are subtitles that change each crime scene but they are all the same. He's made all of these murders very personal to him, and therefore to you as well.

"Personal to him, or personal to his victims?" Steve asked intrigued by the woman who worked and voiced her opinions aloud.

"I think a little of both. He's not your regular psychopath. He knows exactly what he's going and is aware that his behaviour and actions will get him caught. He has all of this planned out for that reason. He wants to come face to face with Five-O. He knows who he's going after and why they are important. He has something against each of them personally but he uses what he has around him - or rather what should be around him. In this case and in Lauren LaBelle's case, you would assume that the photos or the news papers would be easily obtained but the quantity and the subject matter would have been spread out over a long period of time. So we can assume that he had to bring a lot of his materials with him." Mona explained.

"I'll have Toast look for vans or delivery vehicles at each of the crime scenes." Danny stated and pressed his phone to his ear.

"In Johnny Tao's case, most of what was needed was found in the van, but the sheer number of cables used to wrap him up like a mummy had to be supplemented somehow. My guess is that is the crime scene to look at for vans or vehicles that are not from the local news stations. It is the one scene where you have ample surveillance and you were literally right on top of the murder. I'd also hazard to guess that you'll be able to look into hardware stores and audio/visual suppliers, and you'll find that large quantities of the same products were purchased along with glues and varnishes. I believe that he has all of his crimes planned out and would shop for all of his supplies at the same time. I'm going to say that your killer has a background in maintenance - or painting - and that's how he is familiar with the locations and the victims." Mona continued to talk as she took photographs of the body and its position. "In the cases of each individual victim, we've found some thing in their mouths and I believe that these represent two things: first it's symbolic of silencing these people forever. You killer has an issue with the way they spoke out against you, or maybe how they got involved in other people's business for financial gains without regard for the wellbeing of others. They are predominantly news figures who voice their opinions freely and loudly. It's almost like he's telling them to shut up. Secondly, he's using their silenced voices to give us - or Five-O, more specifically - clues to catching him. In Lauren LaBelle's case, she was spewing headers from the news paper, but more specifically, and upon further investigation, we found that the headers were all back dated to issues of the news paper in which Lauren has three very predominant articles - all involving Five-O cases. We have three specific dates for you to look into. I can't, at this time, speculate what is the meaning of Johnny Tao swallowing his own microphone, but this man right here has negatives in his mouth. I can't tell you exactly what is on this film until I've had a closer look at it, but my guess would be that Mr. Pintanell's photos will coincide with Lauren LaBelle's dates and Johnny Tao's broadcasts on those dates as well."

"I have a feeling it was all the same case, and we were there for all of them." Steve stated.

"You were," Charlie jumped into the conversation. "We've already looked into the dates and the articles written by Lauren. They all have to do with a case you covered early in the inception of Five-O and which really threw you into the media spotlight on the island."

"Which case?" Danny asked still on the phone with Toast.

"It was a human trafficking case." Charlie answered. "At the time it was involving Sang Min. It has to do with the people you found in that tanker."

"Literally the first time we worked together." Danny huffed.

"But that was one day. We handed that over to the authorities and carried on with our investigation of Victor Hesse." Steve protested.

"I guess that's why there is such a gap between the dates." Charlie stated.

"How big of a gap?" Danny asked.

"Two months."

"Give me the dates, Charlie." Danny ordered.

"April 12th, 2010, July 2nd, 2010 and July 17th, 2010."

"Did you hear that, Toast?" Danny asked and received the affirmative. "All right, we'd better get to work on some of this new information. We're coming back to you. Please contact us as soon as you know what is on those negatives." Danny added as he ended his call and turned back to Charlie and Mona.

"Charlie, you handle those, I'll deal with the body with Doctor Bergman." Mona ordered.

Charlie nodded and began extracting the negatives from Pintanell's mouth.

"Thanks for everything, Mona." Steve said with an awkward smile. "It's nice to hear a different take on things once in a while."

"It's no different than what you would have figured out once you had all the evidence," Mona said with a dismissive wave but then turned back to Steve. "Please, no more of these human beehives for a couple of days. Max's and my lab have been swarmed with this stuff. We can't handle much more of this."

"I'm sorry, but I can't promise you anything." Steve responded sadly. "We can only hope that this is the last victim."

"I doubt it," Danny added with a sigh.

Mona nodded her agreement and understanding and then waved the Five-Os out of the room.

5-0

Steve and Danny walked back into the Five-O bullpen to find Toast plus another very familiar man - in board shorts and a brightly coloured Hawaiian shirt - working diligently over the smart table.

"Eric?" Danny asked in shock.

"Ahoy!" Eric stated in response as he looked up from the computer. "I would have said hey, while you were on the phone with Toast, but I thought better of it, before you got this message." he added and pointed to a monitor that was not projecting case material but rather, staring back at the room, was the overly exaggerated head shot of Miss. Henrietta Lange.

Steve and Danny stopped dead in their tracks.

"Hello Hetty," Steve stated with a smile - Danny waved feebly and seemed to shrink out of sight behind his partner.

"You've gotten in over your head, Steven," Hetty stated.

"I don't think so," Steve said with a shake of his head.

"Then why have you pulled Mr. Beale off his vacation to scour through archives for you?"

"That was my doing, and I didn't so much pull him in, as abandoned my friend for work." Toast clarified. "When duty calls, duty calls."

"Exactly." Eric agreed and was silenced by a glare from Hetty.

"Your friend?" Danny asked in shock as he stepped out from behind Steve.

"I told you that we'd gone to MIT together." Toast stated.

"No you didn't!" Danny retorted.

"Maybe it was Kono and Chin, who knows now. There's just been so much action around here today, and you did call me off the beach - which was rude. I was hanging out with my very good friend, who is visiting from the mainland, and when it looked like I wouldn't get back out on the ocean today, I contacted Eric and told him my bad news and complained about the data entry that I was press-ganged into, and he offered to come by and help. So here we are, with a very elaborate case and much information to still process. It is nice to have a little help, but I did not force Eric to come here. Imagine my surprise when he told me that he'd worked with you before and was excited to see the set up here."

"I was going to pop in to visit anyway." Eric added with a smile. "It's always nice to see old friends and I will admit that Five-O was one of the factors that brought me to Hawaii for my vacation - on top of the epic surfing. I called Hetty from the beach and she pulled the strings to get me into your building and off the books to lend a hand. When it's all over, I plan to steal Kono away for a pro lesson up the north shore - if she doesn't mind." Eric added with a wink.

"Okay, wait, I'm still very confused. Hetty let you go on vacation?" Steve asked and pointed at Eric while speaking to the woman on the screen.

"I ordered Eric out of the office to take his vacation time." Hetty retorted harshly. "He would have lost them had he not taken them again this year."

"So I figured if I was going on vacation I may as well make it a really good one, and I knew Toast was out there. Little did I know he was working for you?"

"That's classified information." Steve stated.

"I live in classified information." Eric laughed and then turned a frantic look to the displeased Hetty on the screen. "Not that I tell anyone that."

"We all know about Adam Charles, Commander McGarrett, he's been on our radar for many years. It is good to see him doing good for once." Hetty said flatly.

"I've cleaned up my act, learned my lesson, reformed myself, and all those things that come with multiple arrests and the threats of long prison sentences." Toast stated. "I'm a new and law abiding man, Miss. Lange."

"I hope that you are, Mr. Charles." Hetty stated.

"She's scary." Toast whispered to Danny.

"I know."

"I heard that."

"Sorry Hetty." Danny stated and jumped away from the screen.

"Well, we are very grateful to have a fresh set of eyes on this case, Hetty. Thank you very much for lending us your technical operator and intelligence analyst for this case. We need all the help we can get." Steve said before Danny could dig himself a deeper hole with the infamous Henrietta Lange.

"You are welcome, Commander, but please don't keep Eric inside too long - he's supposed to be on vacation - and if there is anything we can do to assist with the case, do not hesitate to ask." She added and with a slight wave and with a glare that was directed at Eric she ended the connection and the screen flashed black.

"Hetty has infiltrated our headquarters. We'll never be safe again." Danny said with a sigh. "We're going to have to move now."

"We're not moving!" Steve huffed.

"And, she can still hear you, Danny." Eric stated and Danny rushed off to his office.

"I hear everything." The woman's voice boomed in the office.
