Chapter 16: Think On Your Sins
Danny walked into the break room the following morning with a tray of coffee cups and a newspaper folded and tucked under his arm. He found his partner glued to the television and the Governor's promised press conference.
"Early morning?" Danny asked trying to gain his partners attention and pull him away from the conference.
"Really early," Steve admitted with a nod but never took his eyes off the TV. "I was looking a Little deeper into the first case, or rather, the aftermath."
"You think there is still more for us to do?" Danny asked and placed up cup of coffee on the table for Steve - a peace offering.
"Maybe not us, but I turned over my findings to HPD and I hope that they do the follow up needed." Steve answered and turned away from the TV finally. "I feel like I owe that much to the little girl."
Danny shook his head and shrugged as the Governor's voice drew his attention, and Steve's, back to the TV.
"More bad publicity?" Danny asked as he threw the paper down in front of his partner and the school photo of a long forgotten victim smiled up at him.
"Is that Alana McKeller?" Steve asked ignoring Danny's question and the sound of the Governor's praise for his task-force.
Danny nodded.
"She looks sweet. It's a shame but she's finally front page news. That's one way to remember her."
"It's a very nicely written article about the case, about her lose of life, and about the extent to which parents will go for their children. I hope it is enough for Colin." Danny said, freed his own up from the paper tray, and sat down.
"I knew I could count on you for that." Steve said and turned his attention back toward the TV. "You're the write the group, and although we publish everything you write through this office under an alias, I think you secretly love it. You could have had a career as a journalist." Steve winked.
"As I said, it's really nicely written - if I do say so myself."
"Should I be worried about your developing alter ego?" Steve asked with a laugh.
"Should I be worried about what you told him to say?" Danny asked in retort as he motioned to the Governor - whom he'd passed on his way into the office.
The press conference was currently on going on the lawn in front of the stature of King Kamehameha. Five-O were avoiding any further publicity after the pair of days they'd been having, though, when all was said and done, the publicity of the matter had become their number one priority once the case has come to it's close - at least on their side.
"I think he's doing a great job. There is a lot of scolding of people getting in our way and a lot of reassurance that Five-O is good for the community. I gave him some pointers, made a few notes, but all in all, I think he's got our back and knows what to say. I trust him to do what is right by us. All in all, I'd say good publicity for us, but who knows how things will be spun in the next few days." Steve said and there seems to be dread in his tone.
"Have you spoken with Toast and Eric yet today? To thank them for everything the did?" Danny asked as he grabbed the remote and turned off the TV.
"I was watching that!" Steve huffed.
"Like you need your ego stroked anymore." Danny retorted.
Steve rolled his eyes.
"Yes, I did speak with both Toast and Eric. They are enjoying the Hawaiian surf today, and Eric will be heading back to NCIS in a few days. He can't stay on vacation forever. Hetty even called to congratulate us and to make sure Eric didn't see the inside of this office for the rest of his stay on the island. I promised he wouldn't."
"Please tell me we have an easy day ahead of us." Danny said with a yawn.
"Is paper work easy enough for you?" Steve asked with a laugh. "I would like to lay low today and..."
"Hate to interrupt the break, boss, but we've got a case." Kono stated as she burst into the break room and ended Steve's train of thought.
"What is it this time?" Steve asked as he jumped out of his seat.
"Colin McKeller was found dead in his holding cell this morning." Kono stated.
"Murdered?" Steve asked in shock.
"It looks like a suicide but it's very involved. He was found handing from the ceiling of his cell by strips of cloth ripped from his own uniform. We're being called in because he left us another message." Kono explained.
"What was the message?" Danny asked and stood.
"Think on your sins."
End.
