CHAPTER II: OH DARLING, DON'T YOU EVER GROW UP
"Steve."
"Buck."
Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes stood face-to-face when they unexpectedly crossed paths in a family restaurant four blocks away from the Avengers Tower.
"Whaddaya doin' here?" They asked at the same time, shooking their heads after realizing how ridiculous they are.
"Just tryin' the food. Heard they have good steak..." Steve was the first to answer, his eyes avoiding his best friend's. He could imagine Natasha's smirk after he said that.
"Yeah, me too." Bucky nodded, pulling a seat for him in the nearby table. Steve did the same. They both knew the other's lying. Well, part-lying.
And both were waiting for the other to call the waitress.
"Sharon, made you-"
"Tasha, made you-"
James Rogers finally had decided to ask Margaret Carter-Barnes for a date. Technically, Daphne was the one who ask Margo for him because he turned speechless after his little sister put him on the spot. Margo said yes with a smile on her face so it didn't matter if he was embarassed that time.
"Great place," Margo observed the place with keen eyes as if it was her first time inside the restaurant.
"We went here last Friday," James pointed out, his cheeks were burning red like his hair. The last Friday's plan was to get him and Margo alone for a friendly date (without her knowing) after school but Daphne and Tom tagged along, oblivious of the plan at first. That's why Daphne insisted to help last night.
"Aunt Nat said you and Uncle Steve look like twins, except the red hair 'course." Margo commented, sipping the apple juice they ordered earlier with their burgers and fries. "I miss this."
"Yeah, a disadvantage when she's pissed at him." They both laughed but it ended pretty quickly for James when he spotted two bulked men in his peripheral vision.
Oh come on.
"Guess, she threatened you with a night on the couch." Bucky said, eyes not leaving the 18-year-old teenagers sharing a bucket of fries in the center aisle.
"Guess, Sharon did the same to you." Steve retorted, his eyes glued to the now laughing redhead and brunette. They both sighed, their ages finally getting to them. "A week on the couch, to be exact."
"Why would Nat send you here?" Bucky asked, finally letting the kids have their time. "Well, I mean, Margo's mine and James is yours."
Steve shrugged. "So, Sharon didn't drag you here. You willingly surrendered."
"Uhm, well," The winter soldier faltered, not having any idea what to say to the father of the boy he was currently spying on.
"Relax, Buck." Steve teased, trying not to laugh to avoid being caught by their kids. "I get it."
"James' a good kid but I can't help..."
"I know, you don't have to explain."
"Margo's my little girl." Bucky looked again at the two teenagers having a date. Particularly at the brunette girl in a wheelchair who looks so much her mother. "Always, can't erase that."
Steve knew that feeling. He have two girls himself, too. Hell, he even felt it when thinking about his first born future. He had been surprised how these small kids grew fast. He was not ready for it, to be honest, even he and Nat had lost one of them before (but that was a different story.)
"Remember when you fainted after Sharon gave birth to a girl." Steve teased to lighten up the mood. He really should stop hanging with Tony and Clint during Thursday sleepovers in the Avengers facility. Or maybe spending his time with his wife, which he wouldn't undo like ever.
Bucky groaned, throwing the lobster side dish to his super soldier friend.
"Why did you like me?" Margo asked all of a sudden, stopping James from poking his burger.
"Huh," James thought he misheard her at first but then she was looking him with those blue eyes like she was waiting for him to answer a question like that.
"I mean, how could you like someone..." Margo paused, eyeing her immovable legs. "With this."
"Why not?" James responded quickly, finally holding the girl's hand like he wanted the moment she said yes to this date. "You're awesome. Awesome like I would never be."
Margo smiled at that. "Aunt Nat's always right. You Rogers boys are awkward with girls."
"Margo, you're an amazing person. I like you with or without your flaws." James composed himself. "Being strong, in spite of your condition...that's cool, y'know."
Margo shrugged.
It was James' turn to smile. "Runs in the family, huh?" He paused. "Well, you're really awesome. It takes a strong woman to tell Barnes brotherhood to be in bed at 9."
"Got that to my mom." Margo said, eyeing the boy in front of her. She sensed his nervousness. "Loosen up, Rogers. You seem distracted and uncomfortable."
"Well..."
"Wanna kiss me?" Margo teased, making the redhead stare at her in shock.
"I don't think that's a good idea." James said with an awkward smile on his face while scratching his head.
"You don't?"
James' cheeks reddened for the second time. "No. I mean, I want to," He paused, slowly bringing his head closer to Margo's. "I want to, not when our dads are around." He whispered.
"Now, I get it." Margo calmly said. If James' eyes weren't tricking him, there was a tint of pink in each of Margo's cheeks. "They're east, right?
"Yeah, that's it. I've been trying to tell you but I just can't say a thing about it."
"I think we should worry more about the two figures in the North." Margo's eyes flickered from the two men to the two women in their North.
"What is it again?" James groaned.
"The moment I looked at her, a vision of her dating a guy like me crossed my mind. That's why I fainted." Bucky explained, chowing down on the plate of steak in front of him.
"Your worst nightmare, Tony said." Steve said, remembering how heavy his friend when he was task to put Bucky in the couch at that time.
"Look what that comment got him, he's got a girl himself, too." Bucky smiled, Tony's reaction when he found that he and Pepper were having Amelia.
"If it wasn't for Pepper, Tony would not have let Amy out of his sight." Steve added, eating his share of the steak also.
"I'm not worried if Margo ends up marrying your boy," Bucky's sudden change of topic caught Steve off guard. Marriage. He wasn't ready to talk about letting his first born go.
"You look constipated, punk." Bucky sneered, gulping down the beer they ordered along with the plates of steak.
"I just remembered something," He half-lied, not wanting Bucky to know how worried he was about topic like that. "You know how Tony was so sure I would be the overprotective one..."
"And it turned out that it was Natasha." Bucky finished for him.
Steve smiled. "Yeah. Just don't mention this to her."
"Thinking 'bout it." Bucky said, laughing when his friend mouthed 'really' in return. It ended when he accidentally noticed a familiar blonde. With a female redhead. "Too late. Our ladies are here, buddy." Bucky said with a faraway look on his face. It turned out that they weren't the only ones spying on the kids' date.
"You're checking if Steve did go here?" Sharon Carter asked the redhead in front of her.
"I'm worried about the availability of the couch tonight."
"If you say so." Sharon quipped back. It had been awhile since the two of them bonded. Actually, they had just met there fifteen minutes ago. "Wait, the kids are gone."
"What?" Natasha couldn't believe they lost the kids. She quickly scanned the area, only to find two super soldiers finding their way to her and Sharon's table.
"Hey, ladies." The dark-haired soldier greeted with a smirk on his face while the blonde one remained behind him, looking sheepish. Sharon pretended to be annoyed, tossing her blonde locks through her shoulder. Natasha knew better.
"You lost them." Nat blurted out the moment the blonde man sat at the chair beside hers.
"Well, you lost them either." He retorted back, earning a kick on his left shin. He just smiled at her, making Nat want to kiss and strangle him at the same time. The other pair was having their moment too when they finally decided to let it slide.
"Bucky Barnes." The dark-haired man introduced himself. He nodded in Steve's direction. "I'm this guy's wingman."
Both women rolled their eyes but decided to play along.
"James texted." Brooklyn Rogers and Nikolai Barnes were walking inside the same restaurant Margo and James had gone to. The former won a gift certificate, courtesy of their 'most handsome uncle' Tony, during last month's Stark gathering.
"O-kay." Nikolai nodded, not sure what the sixteen-year-old blonde means. "What does it says?"
"The folks are there. You better not open that door." Brooke read the message aloud. "Look, there's a text from your sis, too."
"Yup, I see them." The twenty-year-old raven haired confirmed, his eyes on the two pairs dancing slowly in the ballroom. "How about that new ice cream shop next to..."
"Sounds good." Brooke replied, immediately reaching for the door.
"Spying, it's in my blood." Daphne Rogers boasted to her partner-in-crime, Tom Wilson. They watched as her sister, Brooke, and Nikolai fled the scene. "Ya know, you should 'borrow' these wings often."
"Uh, no." Her companion replied, thinking of ways of how to return the wings back to his parents' closet. "My dad's easy, mom's not."
"That's so untrue." Daphne brushed off her best friend. "Aunt Maria's a sweetheart."
"You really have no idea, Rogers." He whined, making the girl laugh at his expense. He tried to loosen up his hold of her as a payback.
"Hey, don't drop me!"
