Chapter 14: Decisions
*Bella*
I laid in my bed, going through my head what dad and Emmett talked to me about. I know they are trying to help. It overwhelmed me at first, but the more I think about it, the more it appeals to me. After almost a year of being blind, I still haven't coped completely. There are so many things I miss.
I want to see a sunrise and sunset, see dad's face again. To see the guys when they come home. To see Emmett.
"Call Carlisle."
"Hello?"
"Carlisle? It's Bella."
"Bella! Hello. What do I owe the pleasure?"
"I was wondering, can you, uh, maybe do some kind of surgery to bring back my sight?" I was nervous to ask him. I was afraid he would say no.
"Well, I would have to run tests to see the damage, see if it is possible, but I can do something."
My heart leaped. "Really?"
"Yes. How about I meet you in Seattle on Friday? I have a friend who will let me use his equipment."
"Oh, thank you. That is great. I'll see you Friday then."
"You are welcome. Bye."
I hung up and immediatly called Emmett.
"Hello."
"Can you come over? I need to talk to you and dad."
"Yeah. I'll be there in fifteen."
"Great."
I walked downstairs to hear dad in the living room. "Hey, dad. Emmett will be here soon. I need to talk to the both of you."
"Okay, kid. Everything okay?"
"Yeah, dad. Everything is, great." I smiled.
I walked to the kitchen and grabbed a soda and listened to the game while I waited on Emmett. Sure enough, fifteen minutes later, Emmett pulled up. I met him at the door with a smile.
"Hey, you okay?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around me.
"Yeah. Come sit down."
We went into the living room and sat on the couch. Dad paused the game so we could talk.
"Okay, so what do you need to talk to us about?" Dad asked.
"Well, I'm sorry about earlier. Truth is, I still haven't completly coped with being blind. I miss alot of things. So, I made the decision and called Carlisle. He has a friend who can let him use his equipment and he is going to do tests to see if he can help me see again."
"Really? You did that?" Emmett asked.
"Yeah. I did. I meet him Friday in Seattle."
"Bells, are you sure? I don't want you to get disappointed if he can't fix it."
"Yes, dad, I'm sure. I can't get any more disappointed than I was when it first happened."
"Okay. I'll take off work to go with you. I want to be with you on this."
"Thanks, dad." I leaned over and hugged him tight.
"I know Carlisle can do it, Bella." Emmett said putting his arm around me.
"I believe he can, too."
That night, Emmett left through the front door and came up to my room. I was falling in love with him. No, I take that back. I was in love with him.
"Hey, Em?"
"Yes, baby?"
"I want to tell you something."
"What's that?" He stroked my hair, something I loved him doing when I laid on his chest.
"I love you." I whispered.
He stopped stroking my hair. I was afraid he didn't feel the same right now.
"You know, I love you, too."
I couldn't help but smile. He lifted my face up and met my lips with his. We kissed like it was the first time.
Friday finally came. Emmett met us at the house and drove us to Seattle. I was nervous. Dad and Em could tell. They made me laugh to ease my nerves. The ride didn't seem so long with them two. I brought my laptop and decided I would email the guys.
"Open email. Email Harding. Hey guys. Hope all is well. I have news for you. I made the decision to go see a special doc to try and get my sight back. Dad and Em are taking me to Seattle as I speak. Maybe by the time y'all get back stateside, I can see. Not getting my hopes up, but we will see what happens. I miss you guys. Much love brothers. I'll let you know what doc says. Later. Send email."
"Email sent."
"You really like those guys, don't you?" Emmett asked.
"I do. They been with me since I joined. They are like brothers to me. You will like them, trust me. You four will get along for the simple fact you all play video games like a religion."
"Then we will get along just fine."
Another hour and we arrived at the hospital. Dad helped me in while Em found Carlisle.
"Hello, Bella. How are you?"
"Nervous, but I'm fine."
"Don't be. I'll take good care of you. The nurse will help you change while I get your dad to sign some paperwork for me."
"Okay."
A nurse took me to a room and helped me into a gown. I sat on the bed once I changed. I could smell the strong scent of sterilization. Almost reminded me of being in the hospital when I first had my accident. Almost.
"Okay, Bella. First off, I am going to look into your eyes before we do the machine tests. I want to see what kind of reaction your eyes have to a light."
"Okay, doc."
I could feel him lift my lid, but couldn't even see a glimmer of light. Sometimes it was frustrating.
"Okay. Your eyes have somewhat of a normal reaction to light. Now I will take you to the next room and lay you under a machine. I will numb your eyes and lids while its being done."
"Okay. I leave this up to you."
He wheeled me around and then laid me down on a bed. I could feel cold drops being put on and into my eyes. Kind of felt like a relief.
"Now, what I am doing is hooking your lids open so that the machine can get a clear picture of your inner eye. You will hear a buzzing sound in a few moments. Don't be alarmed. Just relax."
"Where is dad and Emmett?"
"Just outside the room. Would you like me to get them for you?"
"Please?"
I heard him walk away and came back a few moments later with the others. I felt them both grab my hands as they sat on either side of me.
"Okay. We are ready."
I squeezed the two hands as the machine started. I took a few deep breaths and relaxed.
"How long has it been?" I asked after awhile.
"About an hour. Shouldn't be much longer and you will be done." Dad said from my left.
"Okay. Em?"
"I'm here, baby."
"Just making sure."
A while longer I heard the machine cut off. "Okay, Bella. We are done. Once I get this off of you, I will let you rest then we will do a scan of your head to see how far back the damage goes."
"Sounds fine. Can I eat?"
"Yes. I'll have the nurse bring you food."
Carlisle helped me up and into my chair. I felt myself being rolled down the hall.
"Okay, short stack, into the bed."
"Very funny. Let me know when my food gets here. I'm going to close my eyes for awhile."
"Sure thing, kid. Rest up."
I closed my eyes and rested. I must have been out awhile when Carlisle came in.
"Bella. Wake up. It's time to do the last test."
I woke up and sat up. "Where is dad and Em?"
"They went to get some food. At least, your dad did. This last one shouldn't be too long."
I was wheeled to another room and placed on a table. I felt straps being put across my head and arms.
"Don't worry. The straps are to make sure you don't move while the scan is going. Lie as still as possible. You will hear the machine buzz and thats when we begin."
I tried to nod but my head was strapped down. A few minutes later I heard the machine buzz and I close my eyes. I thought of the guys, what they last looked like. I missed them playing around when we wasn't trecking through sand and desolate land. I missed them.
I thought of dad, and how he last looked to me. Now, I imagined him ten years older, more grey hair in his beard. I hoped I could see his face again.
And Emmett. How I wanted to see his face for the first time. He looked beautiful in my head, probably the same in the world.
I was so lost in thought that I didn't realize the machine had stopped until Carlisle came in.
"You're done. Give us a few hours to go over the results. I will call you to come back in a bit. You may go and do whatever you like until then."
"Okay. Thanks."
I redressed and called for dad. He, Em and I left to go into town while we waited. It was the longest hours ever for me. I picked at my food.
"You need to eat, Bells." Dad said.
"Sorry, I'm nervous as to what they say."
"Don't be. Come on, let's me and you take a walk." Emmett took my hand and lead me around.
"Em, what if Carlisle cant do the surgery?"
"The you will still be the same beautiful Bella to me that I met eight months ago."
"You're sweet. When I was laying there durin the last test, I was thinkin bout how nice it would be to see the guys' faces again, see how much dad has changed. To see what you really look like."
"Trust me, I'm amazingly cute." He laughed.
"I know. I hope Carlisle gives me good news." As if on cue, my phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Bella, it's Carlisle. I have results."
"Okay, be there soon." I hung up. "They have results. Let's go get dad."
We picked up dad and walked back to the hospital. Carlisle met us at the desk and took us to a office.
"Well, Bella. I'll get right to it. The tests show extensive damage to the corneas. Your retenas have mild damage. It wouldn't be hard to repair that damage. In order to do cornea surgery, we would have to do a complete cornea transplant. It's a tricky surgery, but with being experienced, I believe I could do it."
I felt tears stinging to fall out. "R-really? It can be done?"
"Yes. It can be done."
"Oh, thank you, Carlisle." I began full on crying at this point. I could hear dad holding back sobs. "Dad?"
"I'm okay. I'm just happy for you, kid." He reached over and held me as we cried together.
"Now, do know it is an extensive, long surgery. We have to go in and recontruct nerves in order to make sure they take with the transplant. I'm confident in my ability to make you see again."
"When do we do it?"
"I can schedule you for Monday morning. I you here Sunday night to do pre op papers and monitor you. My collegue has agreed to stand in and help."
"Okay. Thank you. So much."
"You're welcome. I will see you Sunday."
Carlisle walked us out. I quietly whispered to him so dad couldn't hear. "Carlisle, why is it the doctors in Kuwait with me took two months to say they couldn't help me see again and you took one day to say you can?"
"Because they haven't had hundreds of years of experience." He chuckled.
"Right. Thanks again. Oh, can you ask Esme to be here please? She's like a mom to me now."
"I wouldn't have to ask her. She will do it without as or question. She loves you as a daughter."
I couldn't help but smile. I loaded into Em's Jeep and we headed back to Forks. I was so excited I couldn't wait to send the guys a message.
"Open email."
"You have one new email from Harding."
"Open email."
"Bella! Hey babe. The guys and I can't wait to hear what the doc said. Maybe they can help. We all know the docs in the old hospital were dumbasses. Let us know ASAP. We will be up waiting on your reply. Hurry!"
"Write email. Hey guys, good news. Doc Carlisle said that he can do the surgery. He is confident he can make me see. I go in Sunday night for the transplant Monday morning. So, that means I get to see your ugly faces when you come state side. Wish you guys could be here. Much love. Send email."
I closed my laptop and laid my head back. I wouldn't be able to sleep for the rest of the weekend.
**A/N: Here it is! The next chapter skips to the surgery day. Hope you al enjoy! Im on a roll! Haha! Thanks for the awesome reviews comin in! Keep 'em comin!**
