Hey Everyone! As some of you may have noticed, back in the middle of May marked my being here one whole year. I've been busy with school and home life since then or this would've been done sooner. For celebration of my one year anniversary, I updated every single one of my stories. Thank you everyone for making my time here worth it. Feel free to read any stories you haven't already read and as always, ENJOY!
"What, happened?" I asked nervously.
"Not again." Diego growled.
"Again? What do you mean again?"
"At every house this is bound to happen at some point." Bree replied, "Between the fights and loud noise houses just aren't made to hold a group of crazy vampires."
"So what now?" I asked as I began to pace, "The sun's almost up."
"Follow me." Diego abruptly said before leaping back off the cliff. Bree and I were quick to follow as the gray sky was quickly lit up.
We dove really deep and yet I can still see the sky getting lighter. My instincts told me to swim from the danger as fast as I could but I needed to stay following Diego. He seemed to know where he was going. Soon he led us to a small opening in the cliffside. It was an underwater cave. Now that I knew where we were going I raced ahead, not caring that I left the other two behind. The cave went far and had curved upwards. I had just begun to think that it would never end when I came out into an air pocket. There was a small cave that stayed dry with a small hole in the ceiling, letting sunlight into the cave.
I had just came completely out of the water when the other two came up. "You okay, Miranda?" Diego asked me.
"Yeah. Sorry. I just kinda freaked back there."
"No biggie."
Then Bree soon followed and then took a quick look around. "Nice place. Uh, thanks."
"Yeah." I said with a grateful smile. "Thanks."
"You're welcome." Although he was talking to both of us, with the way him and Bree were looking at each other you'd think that they were the only two in the room. "So how old are you guys?" he abruptly asked, now also looking at me. I became confused.
"Three months." Bree replied, "I told you that."
"That's not what I meant. Um, how old *were* you? I guess that's the right way to ask."
"Oh!" I exclaimed. He meant in human years. "I'm fourteen."
"Nice." he said with a smile before we both looked expectantly at Bree. Hesitantly, she replied, "I was, um, I guess sixteen. Almost seventeen. I can't remember the day... was I past my birthday?" she then seem to drift off into her own thoughts.
"How about you, Diego?" I asked.
"I was just past my eighteenth. So close."
"Close to what?" Bree asked.
"Getting out." He sounded like he wanted to continue but instead an awkward silence filled the space. Suddenly he looked over both of us. "You two have done well since you got here. You've survived- avoided the wrong kind of attention, kept intact."
I shrugged. "Well I don't know about the whole 'wrong kind of attention' thing but I'm still in one piece."
Bree then yanked up her left shirt sleeve to reveal a thin ragged scar circling her arm. "Got this ripped off once. Got it back before Jen could toast it. Riley showed me how to put it back on."
Diego smiled wryly and touched his right knee with one finger. "It happens to everyone."
I was confused. "I've seen the others ripping limbs from each other but I've never seen how they put it back on. What do you do?"
Diego gave me a smirk. "You lick it."
I raised my eyebrows. "You're joking."
"Nope, he's dead serious." Bree replied, "It would seem that our venom has a, healing effect, so to speak, on our bodies."
I shuddered. "Well lets hope I never have to have anyone else put me back together."
They both laughed and I realized in that moment that this was the most relaxed and carefree I've felt since waking up. "No kidding." Draco managed to say before getting serious again, "But like I was saying before, you two are pretty decent vampires."
"Are we supposed to say thanks?" Bree asked with an eyebrow raised.
"I'm just thinking out loud, trying to make sense of things."
"What things?" I asked curiously.
He frowned slightly. "What's really going on. What Riley's really up to. Why he keeps bringing the most random kids to her. Why it doesn't seem to matter to Riley if its someone like you guys or if its someone like that idiot Kevin."
Riley doesn't seem like such a bad guy but I didn't know him as well as they did. Maybe I need to watch him more carefully. "What do you mean, someone like us?" Bree asked.
"You're the kind that Riley should be looking for, the smart ones, not just these stupid gang bangers that Raoul keeps bringing in. I bet you weren't some junkie ho when you were humans."
I tried to think really hard about my past hub it was all coming up blank. Next to me Bree was shifting uneasily before taking a deep breath. "I was close enough. Not there yet, but in a few more weeks..." she shrugged, "You know, I don't remember much, but I do remember thinking there was nothing more powerful on this planet than just plain old hunger. Turns out, thirst is worst."
Both Diego and I laughed. She joined in for a moment before turning to Diego. "What about you?" we both stopped laughing, "You weren't a troubled teen runaway like the rest of us?"
I looked at him since I was also curious. "Oh, I was troubled, alright."
He stopped talking like as if he was done on the matter but Bree stared at him expectantly. "You don't have to tell us." I said, giving Bree a pointed look, "After all, it's not like I could share even if I wanted to."
My plan had worked. Even though she gave me a dirty look, I could tell her curiosity was peaked at my statement, as was Diego's. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"I literally have no memory of my human life. Everything starts with when I woke up a vampire."
Their faces read pity all over them but that was the last thing I wanted. Yet, I couldn't bring myself to say anything. It was like deep down, I wanted some sort of comfort.
