Chapter Fifteen
(Gwen's POV)
One day. Two, three, four days passed by. I have not seen or heard from him since our fight. I have never felt this bad! Jake has been really nice to me this couple of days but I didn't want him to get hurt! Or anybody that I love! I don´t think I have ever said to anyone I hate you. He must really hate me.
I was reading outside my favourite novel Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. The cover of my old book was already torn apart and the pages were starting to become yellow. It was an ancient edition but I treasured it. I have always loved to read. It was like an escape from reality. You can go anywhere you want to, be whoever you want to be. All of your dreams can come true just by turning one more page from a simple book. Sometimes I wish life could be as easy as turning another page from an old yellowy dusty book.
I was sitting under a tree when I heard the doorknob of the front door turn. Edward and Bella walked outside. I looked at them but didn't say a word. They didn't even notice that I was right outside of the house. They got down the stairs of the porch and walked to Edward's Volvo. Edward was worried about Bella's safety and so was I. Even if she hasn't forgiven me she was my family. They weren't near me but I could still hear their conversation.
- I am not just going to hide while you are taking all the risks for me. – Bella said.
- If it is Victoria involved, I need to keep you as far away from the fight as possible.
- Jasper said that I could…help. – Really Bella? Really? You are just a human being and you want to go against a newborn's army? Are you that crazy?
Edward turned his head towards me and smiled. He must have heard my thoughts. Bella looked at where Edward was staring and when she saw me her mouth fell open a bit but soon masked her feelings and they continued their conversation.
- We won't need your help. With the wolves in this, it's an easy win. The rest of us won't have to do anything at all.
- OK! Either is so dangerous that I have to hide or it's so easy that you are going to be silent. Which is it?
- It's is dangerous for you. It is easy for us. - Edward started walking to his car but Bella stopped him. I kept glancing to them the entire time.
- I think it is dangerous for us to be apart. How many times do we have to prove that? I will be worried and you will be worried and we will both be more vulnerable. - She did have a point but I knew that Edward wasn't one hundred percent sure. He was torn apart between the love for his family and Bella's safety. Edwards's smooth cold forehead was crimped and his eyes were searching for the unknown answer that could solve their problems. He found none.
- Okay…all right. - Edward sighed.
- So I am coming with you. – What!? Edward I swear to god if you let her go I'm seriously going to kill you! I mean the idea of Bella being in the middle of a vampire fight! It's ridiculous!
- No we will both stay away together. – He glanced at me and when I saw him staring at me my eyes travelled again to my book. I shouldn't hear other people conversations and here I am! Being too curious!
- I can't make you choose between me and your family.
- The only way I can protect you is to be with you. - Bella nodded and they hugged.
Edward whispered something into her ear and they immediately looked at me. I looked down pretending that I was still reading. Bella sighed, looked down and nodded more to her than to Edward's request. He entered inside his car and drove away leaving us alone in the front yard. We stood there facing each other in utter silence. We didn't know what to say. We just stood there facing each other while the cold autumn wind brushed on our rosy ebony faces. Bella decided to make the first move and sat down next to me.
- What are you reading? – I was still hurt by the whole situation so I didn't want to talk about it. I just showed her the front cover of the novel and continued reading in silence.
Bella sighed and looked above.
- Why didn't you tell me in the first place that you were a witch? – I stopped reading and close the book with a big thud. I faced Bella's fair face but didn't say anything. She looked down ashamed and started fidgeting her small pointy fingernails in attempt to stop her from running away.
- It's complicated…and a long story.
- I have all afternoon. - She smiled, encouraging me to talk. I crossed my arms and nodded no as a stubborn person that I am.
- Please Gwen. I'm sorry ok?
I stopped reading and faced her.
- Bella. You can't just tell me that I'm a monster and then expect me to just forgive you. You really hurt me! I care about you, about Charlie and your safety. I've always been there for you and I've always defended you when you needed the most. You accept vampires, you accept werewolves and yet you can't accept witches? Why can't you accept me? I'm your cousin for crying out loud! – Bella looked shocked by my outburst. Her brown warm eyes were frightful and she was trying to look for an exit as usual. I exasperated, stood up and left her alone.
Charlie opened the front door for me with a soft smile.
- Hey kiddo! Ready for school?
- Yeah! Hey, could you give me a lift?
- Sure. No problem. – He ruffled my hair playfully and started walking to his car.
- I'm just going to get my bag pack! – I ran upstairs and entered my bedroom. My bag was placed on my bed and right next to it was a letter with my name on it. My heart skipped a beat and I opened the envelope carefully. My hands were shaking from anticipation and my mouth was dry. I gulped in fear when I saw these black elegant words written: Behave sweetheart.
- POPPY! WE DON'T HAVE ALL DAY! – Charlie's voice frightened me so much that I dropped the letter on the wooden floor. I grabbed the letter and hid it underneath my pillow. I grabbed my bag pack and ran downstairs.
- Sorry. I couldn't find it! – I walked slowly to him but he pushed me forcefully outside in a hurry.
- Enough chit chat. Let's go or you and I are going to be late. Bye Bells! – Charlie kissed Bella on the forehead. She looked at me in an apologetically manner but I looked away, crossing my arms grunting.
We entered inside Charlie's car and drove to Forks High school. I was looking every for any sign of Riley the vampire who was chasing me. He knows where I live; who I love and he will do anything to have me. I'm afraid. He may well be watching me from afar this very instant. I shivered.
- So…what was that all about?
- What?
- You and Bella. What happened? I haven't seen you this distant since, well…forever!
- She hurt me Uncle. Bella apologized to me but I can't accept her apologies when I still feel hurt. It doesn't mean anything to me.
- If you need to hum…talk I'm right here, okay? – Charlie's small eyes averted from the road and stared to mine. He respected my privacy and my space but when I needed to talk about anything, anything at all, he would always be there for me!
- Thanks Uncle Charlie.
- No worries. Have a nice sweetie. – I flinched when Charlie called me sweetie but forced a small smile. I opened the car's door and walked inside the school lobby. Everybody's gaze was on me so I walked quickly to my locker. I kept looking down. This past couple of days haven't been easy at all. When the girls came to my place they were right. People are still talking about my situation with Aaron. I was furious with him but just seeing him with a black eye made me slightly more confident. At least his ego was hurt in some way.
Aaron's gang passed though me and he winked at me. His friends laughed and continued striding through the hall.
- Asshole. – I muttered and opened my locker.
- I'm going to kill him! – Roxy and Darcie were next to me. Darcie looked sad at me while grabbing a wild, angry Roxy. She tried to get away from Darcie's grasp but she was so tiny compared to us that she couldn't get away.
- Chill Rox. I don't really care.
- People have a right to know Gwen! He is disgusting!
- I just want to forget it all right? Actually if I could erase this past week it would be great.
- What do you mean? – Darcie asked me. Both of my friends looked curious.
The bell rang and we closed our lockers.
- Can we talk about this at lunch?
- Yeah sure. See you later! – Roxy and Darcie said goodbye and walked away.
I entered the classroom and sat down. My math teacher appeared and said good morning but I was too distracted. The hours went by and before I knew it, it was lunch time.
I walked to the school cafeteria and searched for Roxy and Darcie. They waved at me and smiled once they saw me.
- Okay so what happened? – Roxy asked me.
- It's about…Jacob Black.
- Oh boy. – Her eyes widened and sighed.
- Yeah. He's just so confusing! Sometimes he's sweet and kind to me but other times he's just arrogant and a prick. I hate him! He…I…I don't understand him! Argh! – I exasperated and hid my head in my hands.
- Do you like him?
I glimpsed seriously to Darcie and my mouth opened. I wanted to deny her accusation but it was true. I did like him. The soft side of him. They continued staring at me for some kind of confirmation but I just looked down and nodded no while blushing furiously.
- I knew it! – Roxy wiggled her eyebrows in a suggestive manner which made me laugh.
- There is nothing going on between us Rox.
- Yeah right.
- It's true! I told him that I hated him and he disappeared! Like a normal person would do, of course!
- Why did you tell me that you hate him? – Darcie asked confused. I held my breath and looked away for a few instants. I couldn't tell them that it was because of a possessive newborn vampire!
- I just…do.
- Really? What is it that you hate him about the most? His handsome face or his tanned god like body? - Darcie laughed at my blushing face and Roxy still continued wiggling her eyebrows. HELP ME! My phone started ringing and the name of Edward appeared. Weird.
- Hum…hello?
- Hey Gwen! Huh…listen tomorrow we are going to the clearing again to sort things out before the battle. Want to come? Bella will be there, maybe you could talk - I wasn´t dumb. I knew that Bella had asked him to call me so that I could forgive her. Or maybe he called because he wanted us to make peace.
- Edward why are you calling me? Did Bella ask you to?
- What? No. You're cousins. Don't you think you could sort it out?
- I'm sorry Edward but I don't want to talk with her. Not right now anyway.
Edward's voice lost its character and integrity and he whispered:
- Oh. I see. I know how you feel Gwen. If you need to talk to someone you can always talk to me.
- Thank you Edward. I'll talk to you soon. Take care.
- Yeah you too.
I hang up the phone and looked at my friends' stares. They were watching my every move like they didn't want to miss out something important.
- Creepy! – They stopped staring at me and looked away trying to hide the fact that they have been listening to my talk with Edward.
- What was that anyway? – Darcie asked.
- Hum…I don't really wanna talk about it. It's just that I'm angry with Bella about something and I haven't forgiven her yet. It will pass. Hopefully.
(Jacob's POV)
Four days. Four days since she said the most hurtful words in this world: I hate you.
I never thought she would think of me like that. Nobody has ever been this hostile to me. Not even the leeches! And what hurts the most is to think that I was beginning to like her! My own imprint! It felt so nice to have her next to me…when we slept in my bed: my arms circling around her warm body, the way she smiled, the way she laughed. She was the most beautiful living being on this earth.
When everybody discovered that she was a witch she was ashamed but I was just shocked. She was even more mesmerizing to me and even if she saw herself as a monster I just couldn´t. And I hated myself because I wanted to hate her…not…Argh!
It was no use. I would stay away from her like she told me too. I would respect her request even if it hurts like hell!
- Hey Jake. How are you holding up? - Seth asked as he sat down beside me.
- How did you know where I was? -I muttered to him. He sighed.
- Jake I know you well enough to know that you come here when you want to think. - He was right. When my mother died I ran away from home and decided to take a walk to the La Push beach and I found this log. I sat down and I stayed there all afternoon just looking at the ocean. Since that day I would always come here when I needed to think about life in general.
- Have you talked to Gwen? - My knuckles became whiter as I grasped the log tighter.
- You knew about her secret and you didn't tell me anything.
- Jake I think you should really talk to her…
I couldn't take it any longer. I stood up and faced him.
- NO I DON'T UNDERSTAND SETH! I REALLY DON'T! WHY DIDN'T SHE TELL ME? AM I…THAT DISPISABLE FOR HER? Does she love you? - My final answer was quiet and I was trembling not only from the pain but from the anger.
- WHAT? Jake we…she…I…we are…
- You know what? I don't want to know. - I walked away from him leaving him alone. I ran to the woods and shifted into my wolf form. A painful howl erupted from my mouth.
(Gwen's POV)
Today was a very cold day. The windows were fogged from the cold. Bella was getting ready for the trip to the woods. Today Edward, Bella, Jasper and Jacob were meeting in the clearing where the battle will be held. I was looking out the window and I saw Edward's Volvo parking right outside my house. He got out and stared at me for a few seconds before Bella greeted with him with a kiss. He smiled at Bella but his eyes travelled once again to me. Bella looked at me and nodded to Edward. He kissed her forehead and walked inside the house.
Someone knocked on my bedroom's door.
- Go away Edward. – I sighed. He didn't make a sound for a few moments and knocked softly on the door again. I sighed, stood up and opened the wooden door slowly. I peeked outside and Edward smiled at me.
- Hi. How are you?
- Good. You?
- Great. May I come in?
I didn't respond and made room for him to come in. He walked inside slowly and seemed please that I've let him in but suddenly his face changed. His golden kind eyes darkened and his forehead scrunched in anger.
- Edward…? – I whispered his name slowly and touched his shoulder lightly. He looked at me and suddenly held my shoulders. I whelped in fear and pain. His eyes were pitch black but they were looking nowhere.
- He was here. He was here. – He took a deep breath and strode quickly to my bed. He touched my pillow and took the letter. My eyes widened. I tried to snatch the letter but he was too quick. He opened it and read the two words in a whisper but I still shivered.
He stared at me once he read the letter in shock. He tried to find my eyes but I looked away. Suddenly the world seemed cold, distant.
- Gwen? Who is he? What does he want? – Edward's voice rose but his face remained cool.
- I can't tell you. – I whispered.
- Tell. Me. – Edward started walking towards me but before he could reach me I lifted my hand and a whirl wind pushed Edward out of my window. I gasped and rushed to the window. Edward wasn't hurt physically but his eyes held disappointment.
Bella rushed to Edward and helped him up.
- Are you okay?
- Yes Bella, I am all right.
They both looked at me. Bella was furious but Edward was numb.
- I didn't mean it! I'm sorry!
- Let's just go Edward. – Bella took Edward's cold hand and they walked to his car. Edward's gaze never once broke away from mine.
I don't know why I have decided to protect Edward from the newborn. He is just my cousin's boyfriend. However, he has being kind and thoughtful to me. He has protected Bella all these years from Victoria and vampires and you can see that he loves her very much. Maybe this is the way that I can thank him for all the things he has done for Bella and Charlie.
(Jacob's POV)
I was going to meet with Bella and those leeches this afternoon at the clearing so we could discuss the battle's scheme. But before I went there, Sam asked if I could stop by his house. More like demanded.
I hopped the stairs of the porch and opened the door. The entire pack and their imprints were there eating pork chop ribs and mashed potatoes. Some looked at me sympathetically while the rest of the pack was so entranced on their imprints that they didn't even see me. I gulped and looked away for a few seconds. This was too much for me. I just hope I don't have to stay here for too long.
- Ah Jake! I haven't seen you for a while! Come take a seat! – Emily stood up and started serving a delicious plate but I declined.
- Thanks but I'm not hungry Emily. – Forks and knifes clanged on the table. Everyone was now looking at me strangely and shocked. We were always hungry but ever since she told me that, I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I wasn't myself.
- It will get better Jake. You will see. – Emily's kind eyes bore into my emotionless ones and I grunted irritated. Sam growled and walked next to us but Emily stopped him. He took deep breathes and smiled at her.
He kissed her gently and said:
- Go eat. I will be right back. I need to talk to Jacob ok?
- Ok. I love you. – Emily smiled and kissed him back.
- I love you too. – Sam said, smiled and kissed her one more time. Seeing them like this and realising that I could never be with her like this…hurts.
- We need to talk. – I grunted annoyed and walked outside. Sam followed me and we sat down on the stairs.
- What is it Sam?
- When are you going to meet them?
- After we finish this conversation. – I looked at him but he seemed concerned about something.
Sam remained silent and in deep thought. He never spoke to me, once, and time was ticking. I stood up.
- Is that all? This is why you called me?
- No Jacob. Please, sit down. – I sat down again with my arms crossed. I was extremely irritated.
- Look, Jake…I know how you feel. – Sam spoke with me slowly like…he didn't want to hurt me!
- What are you talking about?
- Gwen. It will pass I'm sure she didn't mean it. Why don't you talk with her? – Hearing her name made me flinch and thinking about her made me feel even worse.
- She said she hated me and she never wanted to see me again. – I whispered and I could feel some tears streaming down my eyes. I brushed them away and cleared my throat. Sam patted my back.
The door flung open and the pack came outside, looking worried and sad. Sam looked at them but I continued staring into the void. It was easier this way.
- I have to go. I will keep you updated. – I stood up and as I was running I transformed into my wolf form.
The dirt on my paws was soft and wet. It was raining for most of the day but it has ceased for a while. The greenery woods which surrounded me were silent. All you could hear was my galloping stride to the clearing. I wasn't too far away because I could already hear Bella, Edward and Jasper talking. I thought that Gwen would be here too but apparently she didn't come. I restrained a soft whine from coming out of my mouth and tried concentrating on their voices.
- Edward? What is it? You have been quiet for most of the ride. – That is strange. It isn't very much like you leech!
Edward must have heard my thoughts because he warned Bella that I was here. I changed and dressed my shorts quickly. When I got there I heard Edward whispering softly in Bella's ear:
- I will talk to you later.
- You are not fighting? What did you pull a muscle or something?
- He is doing it for me ok? - Bella said.
- Whatever. Just tell me the plan.
- This field will give us the advantage in battle when we lure the newborns with Bella's scent. But it needs to end here. - Jasper said.
- Edward and I are going to a campsite. Even if he carries me they will still pick up our scents.
- Your stench however, it is revolting. – Edward said.
- Dude, you really don't want to start comparing stinks.
- What he means is that your scent will mask mine if YOU carry me. – Bella implied and I understood what she meant.
- Done.
- This is not a good idea. – Come on leech! I'm not going to hurt her or let anyone hurt her!
- Edward. They won't get anyone near his…odour. – I tried to remain calm but come on! I don't smell that bad!
- Ok let's just try it! - Bella walked to me and I held her in my arms. Edward seemed angry once Bella was cradled in my arms but he seemed a bit off…distant. He stared at me concerned!? OKAY LEECH WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
- Eau de Wolf coming up! - I looked to Edward but he didn't answer my answers.
- Run. - Edward ordered and I ran away with Bella in my arms.
I ran with her deeper in the woods and tried circling the clearing in different directions in order to mask our scents, or odours as the leeches called. I stopped running but continued walking quickly. I wished I could see her again.
- Hey. Are you okay? – Bella's fragile voice woke me up from my day dreaming and stared at her brown warm eyes. Her heart beat quickened and I smiled.
- So are you going to ask me to sit out the fight too? Or don't you care about my safety? - I asked Bella.
- Of course I care! But you would say no. - She did have a point…I was pretty stubborn much like…Gwen.
- Well I don't have a choice anyways since I let Sam be the Alfa male, I have to live with the shots he calls.
- Since you let Sam be the Alfa? - Her expression was so amusing!
- I didn't want to be in the pack…let alone be its leader!
- Wow! Chief Jacob! - She smiled at me.
Maybe it was a good thing that Gwen separated from my life…maybe I could still have a chance to be happy with Bella. Who am I kidding? She is my imprint!
- Opted out. But every choice has it consequences. Some more than others… - I looked down and Bella's eyebrow rose.
- What's wrong Jake? You haven't been yourself for a while… - I stopped walking and stared at her. Her cheeks reddened and looked away from my gaze which made me snort. I continued walking like nothing ever happened and decided not to answer her.
- I can sense how I make you feel. Physically. I make you nervous. - I started leaning toward her but she looked down. Nothing. I felt nothing.
- Jake… - She said knowing that I was just about to kiss her for the second time.
- Don't worry. I promised I wouldn't kiss you again till you asked.
- And you will be keeping that promise for a while chief. – Yeah. I guess so.
- All I have picked up was wolf stench. No Bella. This will work. - Jasper said.
- Great. - Edward muttered. I had a feeling he wasn't very happy with the idea me carrying her.
We arrived at the clearing and Bella ran away to Edward's awaiting arms. He kissed her head lovingly and thanked me. I grunted and crossed my arms while looking away from the lovely couple. As it appears everyone is happy!
- Great. – I muttered.
- Hey Bella? Could you get going with Jasper? I need to talk with Jacob. – I looked amazed to Edward. What did he want with me?
- Edward, are you sure? – Bella's eyes were staring at both of us. Edward smiled and nodded.
Jasper and Bella walked to Edward's car and drove. I could feel Bella's stares constantly on us.
Edward's gaze was distant and obscure. Like he was trying to solve a riddle or a puzzle all by himself.
- Jacob. I need to tell you something that concerns to you.
He remained silent.
- Well…let's hear it! I don't have all day!
- It's about Gwen. – My heart froze. I strode towards him and held his shirt tightly. I was shaking and my level of control was disappearing by the minute.
- What. Did. You. Do. To. Her?
- Calm down! It wasn't me! It was a leech!
- Well YOU ARE A LEECH!
- IT WAS THAT LEECH WHO CAME TO BELLA'S ROOM A FEW WEEKS AGO!
I stopped struggling with Edward and slowly let him go. He grunted and brushed his wrinkled shirt.
- I captured his scent in a letter she hid underneath her pillow. He must have been there a day ago.
- WELL? What did the letter said?
- It said: Behave sweetheart. I think she is in danger Jake.
- But why did she hide it? – I whispered to myself in disbelief.
- I don't know Jacob. I tried to talk to her but she became defensive and threw me out of the window. I'm worried about her.
My heart beat quickened and a wave of rush and warmth travelled through my body. I transformed and ran as fast as I could to the Swan's residence.
CLIFFHANGER! HA HA HA! I know I'm a mean girl ;)
