Disclaimer: I don't own Glee.
I'll be posting chapter 6 in a few hours as well. Enjoy! :D
"So what are you going as for Halloween this year?" Kurt asked Brittany. It was nice to have some free time before rehearsal. Who knew? Maybe they could all get to know each other better and actually become a family for once.
The blonde smiled coyly. "I'm going as a peanut allergy."
Kurt's smile faltered and his blinked once. What in the world?
"Good news, guys," Mr. Schuester said as he walked in. The group's chatter died down as their mentor smiled. "This week's musical lesson isn't just a lesson, it's an actual musical."
Some smiles appeared and Rachel thanked the stars.
"Please let it be Evita," she repeated under her breath.
Mr. Schue cleared his throat. "Rocky Horror."
Groans erupted and Rachel raised her hand.
"Mr. Schue, while I admire your choice of the ground-breaking 70s musical, aren't you worried that the adult themes might be a point of controversy?"
Kurt nodded. "Seriously. A school in Texas couldn't even do 'Rent'. It caused an outrage."
Mr. Schuester nodded. "I appreciate those comments. However, isn't that the whole point of the arts? To push boundaries? Doing things people say you can't do for the sake of self-expression?"
Nobody commented.
"Anyway, I've cut out some of the more risqué sections, and I'm sending home permission slips. And we're going to charge admissions to help provide transportation to Nationals in New York."
Everyone's face lit up on that note. If there was one thing to be super excited about, it was Nationals. New York was Rachel's dream and she was going to achieve it.
"Now let's talk about casting-" Mr. Schue started.
Rachel spoke up first. "Finn and I will play Brad and Janet."
Artie cleared his throat. "And I'll be playing the guy in the wheelchair, right?"
"That's what I was thinking," Mr. Schuester said. "Kurt, I was thinking you could play the role of Frank N. Furter."
"No, no way am I playing the role of a transvestite in heels. And fishnets. And lipstick," Kurt refuted.
"Why? Because that look was last season?" Santana commented, smiling. Kurt rolled his eyes.
"I'll do it," Mike spoke up.
"Really? That's like, the male lead," Tina said.
"I know, but I'm feeling a bit more confident about my singing voice after our duet."
"Great, I have no problem with that," Mr. Schue said. "Now, we're short on female roles so we're going to have to double up Columbias and Magentas."
"It is standard practice on Broadway," Rachel said. "It'll preserve your voices."
Mercedes bit her tongue. "I'd like to preserve you in a jar. In my basement."
Rachel rolled her eyes as the group laughed.
"Now, Sam, I'd like you to play the role of the creature"
Sam blinked. "From the Black Lagoon?"
Anne smiled and shook her head. "Rocky—he's like the Frankenstein character but blonde?"
"You better start working on those abs." Santana quipped.
"Are you kidding me?" Sam said. "You can cut glass with these babies," he winked at Anne and she felt her face flush a bit.
"Okay, it looks like we've got a show!" Mr. Schuester said.
"There's nothing wrong with you," Rachel told Finn. They were going over the script in the auditorium when Finn had confessed about his physical insecurities.
Rachel, being the friend she claimed herself to be, had outwardly comforted him.
"I'm not like any of the other athletes here," he said again. "I'm just really insecure about the way my body looks."
"Look," Rachel frowned. "You just have to trust me when I say that there's nothing wrong with you, okay? You're one of the most handsome guys here at this school—this is all coming from a friend who cares about you."
Finn managed a small smile. "I guess."
"Good, now let's get back to work."
"Let's start with Dammit Janet," Mr. Schue said.
Finn adjusted his fake glasses and straightened his jacket.
"I can't wait 'til Finn takes his top off," Santana remarked.
"Excuse me?" Finn asked.
Brittany smiled. "You can't just eat Sloppy Joes everyday at lunch and expect to get away with it."
"Um, that's incredibly rude," Rachel said, placing her hand on Finn's back.
"Is it?" Quinn questioned. "Guys talk behind our backs about how we look everyday. They objectify us all the time."
Tina nodded. "She has a point."
"Yeah, earlier today Artie asked if he could make a gigantic omelet out of the giant ostrich eggs I'm smuggling in my uniform."
"I'm just super excited to see Sam in his golden undies."
"It's going to be abulous."
Finn put his hands up in frustration. "Can we just move on?"
"Are you sure you're okay with me parading around the stage with a pair of golden underwear?" Sam asked as he handed Anne her chocolate fro-yo.
"I'm completely fine with it, Sam," she said. "I was actually kind of surprised that you asked me this." She sat down gingerly, carefully adjusting her skirt.
"Why are you surprised? Aren't we..." he trailed off, his eyes widening. "Oh my god, I completely mixed up your intentions. You don't want to be-"
"No! No," Anne said, laughing slightly at his flustered expression. She took his hand and smiled. "I do. I do want to be your girlfriend. I'm sorry I never cleared that up after our date at Breadstix."
Sam smiled small. "My girlfriend, huh?" He squeezed her hand.
Anne returned the gesture and nodded. "Yeah, if that's what you want."
"Yeah, it is." He let go of her hand and took a hold of his spoon. "You know, for a second there you had me kind of worried. Our date was more than a week ago and you hadn't said anything...I was beginning to think you weren't into me."
"I'm sorry about that, I just kind of needed some time to think things through but, it's all good now."
"Cool," Sam said, his eyes shining.
"I told him he had nothing to worry about," Rachel said, holding her cell between her ear and shoulder. The pot steamed with the cooked pasta.
"Well, it's true. Finn isn't a bad looker-which was one of the reasons I was afraid of losing you to him."
"Shut up," Rachel teased, laughing slightly. "You never had anything to worry about. I was yours from the beginning."
"I admire your charisma, Rach," Jesse said lightly. "How are you?"
"I'm good, I'm just worried that the production won't follow through. Mr. Schue seems to have one foot in and the other on the Emma-Carl platform."
"Ah. Adult drama."
"Tell me about it," she tossed tomatoes into her salad as she kept balancing the phone. "Anyway, will you be home during Christmas?"
"Absolutely," Jesse answered. He closed his history book and sighed. "I miss you."
"I miss you too," she said. She wiped her hand on a towel and grabbed her cell. "It's been agony without you here."
"I was there a week ago, Rachel. It can't be that bad."
"It is. I miss my man."
He laughed harder. "I know, I was just trying to lessen the blow."
"Well, when you come back for the holidays, I have a present for you."
"Oh?" Jesse asked, his eyebrows arching. "And may I ask what that is?"
Rachel bit her lip. "It's a surprise, Jesse. No spoilers."
"Dammit," Jesse said. "Why isn't December yet?"
Rachel laughed and heard the front door open, the chatter of her two dads filling the house. "My dads are home, I should get going."
"Tell them I said hello."
"Will do," she responded. "I love you."
"I love you too."
"I want to apologize for putting you guys through this," Mr. Schuester said as he took a seat.
Rachel sighed. She had a hunch that he would want to back out of the production. It had only been a matter of time-everybody knew it. It became clear when Carl had stormed into the auditorium and yelled at Schuester for wanting to take away Ms. Pillsbury.
"I'm sorry to you all, particularly Finn and Sam."
"It's cool, Mr. Schue," Finn said. "I'm sure the teasing will have died down by the time my tenth reunion rolls around."
Sam nodded. "And I got asked to be June in the Men of McKinley High calendar," he let out a breath.
"I'm happy for you," Mr. Schuester said. "But we still can't do the musical."
Everyone sighed.
"Look, I was wrong," he stated. "Rocky Horror isn't about pushing boundaries or having free expression...Those were my reasons for doing it, and they aren't worth risking what we have here."
There was a pause.
"When I was younger and they began midnight showings of Rocky Horror, it wasn't for envelope pushers, it was for outcasts. People on the fringes who had no place left to go but were searching for someplace, anyplace where it felt like they belonged. Sound familiar?"
Rachel smiled, her arm intertwined with Kurt's. Mr. Schuester had a point.
"The truth is, with that perspective, Rocky Horror is the perfect musical for this group."
"Well, then why aren't we putting it on?" Santana asked.
"We're still performing-just not for an audience. We're doing it for ourselves," he said, smiling.
It's astounding, time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
Kurt moved around the members on the stage very much in character. From the house, Mr. Schuester could tell that the club had really put their all into the production despite it being canceled.
Anne smiled as Kurt grabbed her shoulder. "But listen closely, not for very much longer," she turned swiftly and placed her hands against Kurt's in a mock high-five as they raised up.
I've got to keep control
The music turned up and the tempo increased and it was full blast of voices.
I remember doing the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me and the void would be calling
Let's do the time warp again...
Let's do the time warp again!
Rachel made eye contact with Finn and smiled. After everything that had happened, it amazed her that they really could get along as friends. That was all fine with her, she wanted nothing more than to just be friends with him.
It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Don't forget to review!
Much love,
